- starguy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+50DO NOT I REPEAT Do NOT upgrade any PSP to anything over 2.71, including this 3.00. Sony is continuing its war to try and lock you out from running anything but their software on your PSP. The firmware you want to be at, is either 1.5, or the newly released hacked 2.71SE-B, which is even more GOLDEN (as of this writting) than 1.5. Also, before you buy a PSP, make sure it does not have a firmware above 2.71, and that it is not a TA-082 motherboard. You can find info on how to tell these things at psp-hacks.com.
To downgrade to 1.5:
http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/about17935.html
After downgrading to 1.5, follow the instructions to install a clean 1.5, by downgrading to 1.0, and doing the sony upgrade back to 1.5, using the MPH downgrader:
http://www.psp-hacks.com/psp-downgrade.php
To then upgrade to the hacked 2.71 SE-B (special edition):
http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/about37581.html
Note that you can run Loco Roco and any other ISOs, or CISOs (compressed ISOs) right off the memory stick from the crossbar, with 2.71SE-B. And have your 2.71 webbrowser and RSS feeds too, AND play 1.5 homebrew, meaning, thousands and thousands of SNES, gameboy, DGEN, MAME, Sega, etc ROMs.
If you want to learn about the PSP scene, check out my boys pox and raggable at PSPhacking101, they do some great introductory videos to the PSP homebrew scene.
http://psphacking101.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14"Well, after months of rumors, and hundreds of edited, fake photos of 3.00 distributed on the Internet, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has finally spilled the beans on the official 3.00 firmware release date! According to JP.PlayStation.com, the update will be released shortly, with some interesting new features, here's a straight translation from their site:
"In addition, since selling PSP® in late November it upgrades also “[pureisuteshiyon] does Advanced Capability addition and strengthening of security via the version upgrade of continuous system software, portable” which, in 3.00 and starts raising the cooperation function of PS3. As for everyone of the PSP® user with the update to of version 3.00, for PSP® which is transmitted inside PLAYSTATION®Store “of PLAYSTATION®Network” besides the fact that it reaches the point where utilization it can receive the game software, the remote play function of PS3 * to enjoy 3 also it becomes possible to receive, (in PS3 of the HDD loading of 20GB from the fact that it is not wireless LAN function, it is not possible to utilize remote play, * 4)."
So, by the looks of it, you should be able to retrieve the update via the PlayStation Store, part of the PlayStation Network, a new feature for the PS3. Of course, you can see that the update is packed with more security updates (it's Sony, people) and many PS3 to PSP connectivity features, including game software transfer.
So get ready for the update we've all been waiting for... *cough* dreaded *cough*. This update should be available for download on Network Update on the 11th, though contradicting reports from IGN a few days ago say otherwise (they said end of November). But for now, we're getting our countdown clock fired up, as we wait for the 3.00 system update!"
Thats what it says on the page (Incase the page wont load again) - warlord, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Not worth upgrading if you cant run homebrew on it. Until someone hacks it so you can use it can.
- rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Its not actually the digg effect. They're running Windows ME and have to reboot every half hour or so.
- MetalUnderShock, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12windows 98se
- rick2k, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13i find home-brew pretty crap anyway.. i mean.... GBA roms lag? and gta vcs and lcs stutter a bit when emulating 2.71 and also not to mention devhook's wifi is screwed... can't connect to any WPA source it just goes crazy and resets itself..
will prob upgrade when 3.0 is out. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"I'm sorry you think that Nintendo lies like your beloved Sony."
Hey buddy, everybody lies. Remember when the Wii was going to be Region Free?
I have a Wii pre-order paid for in full and am picking it up next Sunday. My Digg history and comments on the other Wii threads here are proof enough that I'm excited about the console (and mostly pro-Nintendo). In fact, I've been accused of being a 'Wiitard' and 'Nintendo Hack' by multiple Diggers already.
I have no interest in the PS3, at least in its current form (and with it's current software lineup), and as stated above, my PSP is getting next to zero love.
I was just calling into question the statement, which the Pro-Nintendo crowd here ate up without restraint.
So before you start calling names, why don't you take five seconds and click on the profile for the person you're getting ready to fling an insult against? You might be surprised at what you'll find. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Virtual Boy was portable?
Isn't that like saying a desktop with wheels on the case and a CRT monitor in your trunk is a portable computer? - fani, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Hate Sony...but love the PSP. ( Not trying to start any flame war or comparing to any other handheld. Don't digg this down simply because I love the PSP. )
Games I enjoy are on it - Wipeout, Lumines, SOCOM 1,2, Burnout legends, Virtua Tennis, GTA: LCS, GTA: VCS, locoroco, KillZone, Soccer, Ape Escape to name a few. I also like its Wifi web browsing, photo display, video, music features. Not killer but its there for being there. Lets see how the PS3 interaction works out. Seems cool if I could access PS3 content on its Harddrive remotely from the PSP or stream video to PSP from a networked PS3 a la slingbox.
However, I find that good games are not that many on the PSP. Just those above and the units been out for a long time already. Here's hoping for continued good games on the PSP and all platforms. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10wow, 33 diggs and already down, what are these blogs running on?
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You obviously haven't tried 2.71 SE yet. GTA VCS and LCS do not lag at all as far as I've tried, even when running from the USB port. GBA roms are getting a hell of a lot better with only a small portion of them lagging, and almost all of the other systems run perfectly.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I admitted I was wrong and stated so above. See, that wasn't so hard now, was it?
You can get off your soapbox now. - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I tried out the whole homebrew thing... I thought it was kinda pointless, so I just updated it, and use the browser. Kinda the only real use for a PSP in my mind. Pretty pathetic I know.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There already is a modchip for the PSP, it's just not getting that much press due to the fact that right after it came out, someone hacked the PSP with 2.71SE, which does everything that 2.71 does, but has the homebrew capabilities of 1.5.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Not true. They've sold enough, and it's really a nice system if you'd actually look at it. The games at this point are about equal in fun as those on the DS (in the beginning they sucked, but they caught up), and the only thing that really "failed" was using UMD media, which I could care less about as long as it delivers my games.
- Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Half hour uptimes for Windows ME? Those are some damn good admins.
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I distinctly remember playing my virtual boy on the road to vegas ... never did that with my Pentium 133mhz Desktop
- fubes2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wouldn't exactly compare Sony's updates to M$'s.
M$ releases a new update every couple days to fix their own glaring security holes [and create new ones] and Sony releases their updates every couple months to add new functionality. [and break homebrew xD] - nutcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i agree
I like my PSP, it it has the most realistic and powerful game play and graphics for a portable, and the screen is awesome. Great battery life, really amazing, it is basically a PS2 in my hand, and the resolution of the screen is better than a standard resolution TV that I used to play all my PS2 games on. Plus with the wifi, multiplayer games are cool, the browser is barely passable, but the Podcast support is awesome, can stream or download audio and video podcast from the couch.
It also works well as an MP3 player, just drag and drop files to it via USB 2.0, no copy write/transfer worries, and the playback controls are killer!
Also, love to download google videos to it, play back is great, not to mention ripped/converted DVDs, I can fit three DVDs on a 1GB stick.
I know people hate the PSP and love the DS, but feature for feature it is way beyond it's peers (even nowadays, and it is years old).
Also, you can get a 4GB MS Duo for $80, and in about a month you will be able to get a 8GB MS Duo for around $150-$180. - krasht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Are you serious? I used to take magazines to the toilet/rest room/bathroom, but now I can surf the web with the PSP while taking a crap. Very useful indeed.
- Nightfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@starguy
Great post! I have a PSP but I haven't been too active on the homebrew scene. Mainly because of the 1.5 version. Now that I know 2.71 is at least pretty good with it, I may start doing more with my PSP. :)
Thanks for the links! - MartinBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You're completely wrong. It's very obvious that DS has outsold the PSP, but lets backtrack just a bit. I'm sure that we all know before both consoles were released, a huge point brought up many times was the fact that PSP was just entering the portables market and Ninty has owned it for years.
PSP still has some life whether or not you'd like to admit it, and that fact in it's own respect is enough to know that PSP was a success. Sure, it might not outsell the DS, but it's Sony's first go at this market, and for a first try, they're performing pretty damn well. They've taken a higher percentage of the portable gaming market than any other GameBoy/DS-opposing device did in their respective generations, which is a huge step.
Sony still has some crap to sort out, but there's still many tricks that Sony may decide to pull out of their sleeve(if they get off their asses)
Loading Times- we all know that UMDs were a risk in this department from the beginning. If Sony wants to kill two birds with one stone, why not load from the memorystick just as PS3 aims to load from the HDD? Then we would have an excusable reason to buy large capacities of their otherwise overpriced format. Oh yes, a battery life extension would result too, because the UMD-drive wouldn't be loading all the damn time.
RPGs- Sony needs to slap Square-Enix. Or better yet, bribe them to create more PSP games. Come on, we all know that there was a bit of disappointment from the lack of RPGs on PSP, and it comes as no suprise. The same reasons many big RPG developers moved from n64 to PS1 reside in the DS vs PSP. With a large capacity format to store large worlds, FMVs, detailed music, and a long story, it seemed obvious that the PSP would have plenty. The DS may polish the controls on old-school RPGs, but we all expected PSP to be a breeding ground for not-as-oldschool RPGs.
PS1 Emulator- All points come around full circle with this expected upgrade. HEAR ME SONY. Give us something WE WANT to store on your memorystick, say perhaps, Final Fantasy VII? *hears rumbling of FF7 fanboy herd*
@ Sony(if you're out there!)
When it's all said and done, we'll have a library of games downloaded to match the DS(kinda), a reason to buy [maybe multiple!] high capacity memory stick pro duos, AND a speed increase on games we've already wasted our money on! But seriously, there's a good chunk of things Sony should be focusing on and pushing. If a PSP-lite ever gets released, we need 2x UMD drive, we need an internal drive to curve load times even more and save battery-life from the UMD slot(not to mention store media). We need a lighter system with a higher capacity battery. If Sony starts giving a damn about their product, maybe WE WILL TOO. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Looks like I was wrong about the DS connectivity not being demonstrated yet:
http://wii.ign.com/articles/743/743881p1.html
Sorry I don't have the time to read every single Wii-related article like you do; I do have a life, you know. But I'll sleep a little better knowing tonight that I made little Cglass happy :) - drey1082, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I wouldn't exactly call the virtual boy "portable"
- Zarchon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I too sold my DS. I liked it though but I am 50 years old and the screen was seriously too small for me to play games on. I love my PSP but I mostly use it to watch movies, listen to MP3s and store photos. I do play a couple of games but I just can't justify paying $40 to $50 for a hand held game (although I really want Ghosts and Ghouls). I love the PSP and everybody I show it to loves it.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you don't want to respond, then why do you keep doing so?
Again, let me spell it out for you:
-I made a statement based on memory (I had never read of the DS-Wii connectivity being demonstrated). Probably not a smart move on my part.
-I was called as being wrong (as you and a few others pointed out)
-I did a quick search on IGN and found out that - gasp! - I had no idea what the hell I was talking about!
-I posted a retraction and admitted my mistake.
In the meantime, you've:
-Resorted to insults and name calling
-Called me a Sony Fanboy
-Suggested that I've *paid* other Diggers to Digg me up (?!?)
The only one here who's making an issue out of this is *you*. Whether I get dugg up or down is irrelevant; I posted my last reply so *other* people wouldn't *believe* my inaccurate comment, which couldn't be edited. I posted the bit about my feelings towards Nintendo towards you, in what became a (futile) attempt at explaining my viewpoint, and that I'm not a blind Sony fanboy.
You're fooling yourself if you think that every single person on Digg knows what they're talking about every time they hit the 'Submit Comment' button. Some people make mistakes, some people lie, and some are just plain stupid. I'm not perfect, and you're not either.
This is just a suggestion, but you're probably getting dugg down not because you're right or wrong, but because of your attitude and lack of humility. - b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well done for promoting a site a bit without being a dick, starguy
:) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I'm selling my PSP, on Ebay today. 1.5 firmware, never updated...I need money for the Wii and I never use my PSP. It just sits in it's protective covering all day :(
- triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1when you can play your wii games sitting in the airport on your ds via wifi, then tell me nintendo beat sony to the punch because thats what you'll be able to do with your psp and ps3, not simply use it as a controller in your living room.
to my knowledge nintendo doesn't even have this capability in the works. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No really, download 8 games and you are even. And you know you will try at least 20 games. Plus, you get a much larger screen then the micro.
And for SNES emulation, you can't even find half the games you want for under 30 bucks these days. - starguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An update on the super cool 2.71SE-B firmware, that lets you run a hacked version of 2.71, with webbrowser, rss feeds, 1.5 homebrew support, 2.71 homebrew support, recovery mode, and the ability to run ISOs/CISOs direct from the memory stick.
There are two updates to 2.71SE-B, and you want to install them both, after you install 2.71SE-B:
2.71SE-B2 (also refered to as 2.71SE-B' - NetworkShadow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I've heard a PS3 is optional. I'll be mad if they try to force a PS3 on me also.
- Matt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got my old psp on v1.5, sticking with the homebrew on that but im gonna upgrade my white psp to v3 since in the future i will have to anyway to play certain games.
- crashingechelon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been waiting for 3.00 so I could be able to finally play PSone games on my PSP. If they make it so that you need a PS3 to do that, I'll be very upset since I won't have one for a long time.
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry for expecting more out of humanity.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3So now we need to clarify by region? Because none of those Pokemon games are coming to North America until well into next year.
- bar10dr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1My PSP is a piece of crap hardware without the correct software.
- feaks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4actually DS -> Wii has been demonstrated in the new Pokémon game wich will also be the first to support online gaming.
- DrWu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That's unfair, the failure of the PSP isn't the platform, it's the content.
Besides, how can anything be worse than the Nokia T-aco. I mean, N-Gage. - ZeonZumDeikun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Get a room.
- stuzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I hate it when people talk about the DS like it's the greatest gaming experience in their existance. The psp has fantastic graphics and decent control for most games. Sure there are lags in load time for some games, and only a few that appeal to each type of gamer but to be honest look at the DS games, if I wanted to draw i'd be an artist like when I fingerpainted as a kid. Other than Metroid and the new Zelda there isn't much for the DS that's actually brain bending or satisfying, everything is designed for little children. TO even compare the 2 systems is pointless since niether can play similar style games even if they have similar titles.
I love my psp and my tiger woods, ultimate ghosts and ghouls (which is currently kicking my ass), untold legends, ridge racer, and Syphone filter. I had a ds and sold it almost as soon as I bought it and other than metroid and the new Zelda, haven't looked back till now and those two aren't enough for me to spend more than 100 dollars for something that can't do anything but play kiddy games - 98acura, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3http://www.duggmirror.com ???
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3See I thought I wouldn't have to go into details, I just ASSUMED that people who loved Sony could imagine for ONE ***** SECOND that Nintendo has done something right.
The Wii comes stock with DS connectivity support. Trying to find a url for you disbelievers:

I'm sorry you think that Nintendo lies like your beloved Sony. - nads, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@STARGUY - Thanks for the useful info starguy, especially the links as on several occasions I've opted out of downgraded because of the conflicting info I kept seeing.. Just 1 question...
What did you mean by "even more GOLDEN (as of this writ ting) than 1.5", it's even better than 1.5?
Thanks :) - somesthetic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1ignoring peoples feelings on the PSP itself, which aren't terribly relevant, this whole story is highly inconclusive and speculative.
not what I would call "official." - starguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0An update on the super cool 2.71SE-B firmware, that lets you run a hacked version of 2.71, with webbrowser, rss feeds, 1.5 homebrew support, 2.71 homebrew support, recovery mode, and the ability to run ISOs/CISOs direct from the memory stick.

- tokeio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Is it just me or is Sony forcing PSP owners to buy a PS3 if they want to play PS1 games? Because I'm not touching a PS3 with a ten foot pool anytime soon, so I guess Sony just abandoned me and my lowly PSP.
