- dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"If Microsoft MADE DX9, then why can't they get the lighting right? It looks downright terrible in comparison to modern FPS's. I mean, Half-Life 2 came out TWO YEARS AGO!!! It looks better than the last one, but that doesn't mean it's good. No digg."
wow do you know nothing.....comparing a FPS to open ended flight sim.....really?
A FPS is much easier to get more detail and advanced effects cause because its a controlled environment. For a flight sim I will say this is by far the best looking one I have ever seen. (if it looks this good when it comes out) - mdweaver7485, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@nuke penguins. yeah that was so sexy i need to change my underwear. Like before people said, ground textures. It looks almost like they took satelite images and mapped them over GIS data to get the elevations and buildings, that or they just rocked the hell out of textures.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh.. that's a different thread.
Anyway, this appears to work:

- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Trump - If they continue in the tradition of the previous FS titles, it should be pretty simple to add additional aircraft. I used to download all kinds of military planes for FS2000...F-22, F-16, SR-71, P-51, etc.
Great looking screens, can't wait for this to come out. - loquacious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The first comment in the linked thread pretty much sums it up for me. "My god"
Though I didn't think about the DX10 part. Argh.
I look at those pics and I just feel old. We used to wait days and weeks to render stills like that. Now you can get 30, 60 fps and more.
The first flight sim I ever played was MS FS 1 on a genuine first gen IBM PC at my grandpa's place.
Green sticks and lines on a mostly flat ground. But it was playable. - senfo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can remember playing FS for the first time (I think it was version 4). It's come a LONG way since those days.
++digg; - myskja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These shots are not DX10. The dev team does not have DX10 hardware yet, so FSX will be optimized for DX10 at a later stage. FSZ will be running in both DX9 and DX10. Great screenshots BTW.
- myskja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"""Vista only no doubt."""
It's confirmed that you will be able to run it on XP as well, though it's "optimized" for Vista and will "only" run in DX9 on XP. - abbott75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 Q: What are the types of aircraft featured in “Flight Simulator X”?
A: We will offer a range of aircraft to support a wide variety of flying experiences and many of the aircraft will be tied to specific mission-based experiences. Our basic fleet is merely the starting point because we are going to make it easier to download additional aircraft created by the many accomplished add-on developers in the community. - dodger2020, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sitting here laughing at the x-plane fanboys. And I'm a fan of x-plane as well. But I'm also a fan of microsoft's flight sim. X-plane is not perfect. While it does do a way better job of simulating the physics of flight it's still not perfect. And saying that these new screenshots "look almost as good as x-plane" ??? What the hell? Are you people high? X-plane's graphics are dated. Even FS2004 looks better than x-plane. X-plane doesn't look bad by any means - just not as good. FS has the looks, x-plane has the brains. If they could just combine the two it'd be sweet.
- oblack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL...actually its LMAO!...looking at what u guys wrote is...lets just say it should be a commedy/fighting show....its FSX vs X-plane and this other guy who has no idea which one to pick...*cough* brucer69 *cough*...anyways...let me put mi point in...first of all i prefer FSX, but i still havent played X-Plane YET...but from the screen shots of X-plane 8.0 compared to FSX...i mean come on!..are some of u people on crack!!!...FSX has WAY better graphics...actually i think those graphics would need a computer that only bill gates can build to play...im getting scared of the system requirements...for thos kind of graphics...u would need like a 1GB PCI-E, super fast transition video card...also, nobody has played FSX, u guys are arguing about the wrong thing...for what u know, Microsoft could be looking at all these blogs and saying "dammit, we need to fire that physics guy and buy out the one from x-plane" or "we are going to need to get X-plane's physics instructor and a couple of real pilots to fix up this game"..u guys can argue about the previous games, but u dont know what FSX holds...they were only working on this for a short time...screen shots just came out...they probably have a whole lot more in store for Flight simulator hobbie people (not FS fans, X-Plane is still a flight simulator, dont believe me look up the defenition for 'simulator' and 'flight')...i agree that microsoft should put in some military jets and some REAL crash simulations, not the "when u hit the ground, crash comes on the bottom left screen and the simulator starts right over," thats not realistic at all...o yeah and by the way, i dont think they are putting in the WTC's back because they want to maintain there saying which is "as real as it gets"...i couldnt say anything about the physics in comparison to X-plane, but i know that turbulence in FS2002 is not the way turbulence actually happends in real life...but then again, FSX is still being worked on, and remember, they are TRYING to get as much customers as they possibly can...
u can continue wit da argument!
by the way, if FSX is going to be on Windows Vista, it might be on iMac cuz Microsoft are trying to push windows vista onto the iMac society - Legion303, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"And saying that these new screenshots "look almost as good as x-plane" ??? What the hell? Are you people high?"
Take a look at the global scenery pack. 60GB worth of real satellite imagery trumps MSFS's well-rendered but cartoony landscapes any day. I will concede that MSFS undoubtedly looks better when you're actually landing due to X-Plane's textures (it looks flat when you're on the ground, unfortunately). - t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"From award winning game developer ACES comes Flight Simulator X. The latest installment will include the usual genre leading realism that continues to awe real pilots and will serve as the graphical benchmark for games on Windows Vista. Additionally, Flight Simulator X will deliver for the first time structured game play with more than 55 missions to choose from which will test the skills of players of all levels." from http://www.microsoft.com/games/pc/flightsimulatorx.aspx from the sounds of it, it is visa only.

another site with the same images - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ThugEsquire:
I think, for an added bonus, they should add realistic crash models and put the WTC back in.
Why would you say something like that??? Dumbass - ravuya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks a lot better than the only other version of Flight Simulator I own: the Mac version for the early 68020 machines.
- combatcupcake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Imageshack killed most of the pics.. digg and imageshack do not mix
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. Looks awesome. Only thing is... how many gigs of HD space this going to take along with what type of graphics card cause I'm assuming you're going to need NASA computer equipment to get this thing looking THAT good....
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"from http://www.microsoft.com/games/pc/flightsimulatorx.aspx from the sounds of it, it is visa only."
Microsoft will definitely win if they promote Vista as a gaming platform. That and to keep the PC "secure" and "up-to-date".
They can't add many capabilities to an x86 (who can? they obviously can do anything, run a botnet or two, and still inspire a Finnish guy and two big companies to make an OS for it) so they must trumpet the programs and security features (Protected Mode for IE, e.g.) that'll only be there. Otherwise, they slip further. - canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Site = shunted
- DeckardRep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, for anybody that's impressed with the ground textures, check out the "Bird's Eye imagery" at local.live.com
I don't know how many locations they have, but for the Boston area they've got amazingly detailed shots from 4 directions. - coffeegeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Truly remarkable....But I'm scared to think of the system requirements.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool, this looks awesome but... i want it now.

Q: Will “Flight Simulator X” require Windows Vista?
A: No. While “Flight Simulator X” will not require Windows Vista, it will be optimized for the latest in Windows gaming hardware and fans will get the best experience by running on Windows Vista. - terafunker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's too bad.
- Thumper13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good great monkey doo-doo.
Can't wait to download all those custom planes and fly around the world.
What's the release date? I know I could google it, but what fun is that! - fascistpig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ha...I played it on a Commodore 64!
- panzerfinder15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice, except that those screen shots came out almost 2 months ago. Definatly buying when it comes out. FS10 is why I built my gaming computer.
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow looks great, though there is no way my computer could handle it, will they release it on the 360 too?
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"FS has the looks, x-plane has the brains. If they could just combine the two it'd be sweet."
They should have high-altitude sex (or land a spot on Late Night with Conan O'Brien). - Sinscriven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The scenery is gorgeous.
So much so it makes their models look like crap.
But I've never been one for flight Sims, too complicated for my tastes.
That and my most favorite part of playing a flight Sim is crashing it, and without crash modeling, it doesn't really appeal to me.
If someone made a Burnout spin off with Airplanes, it'd probably make the top list in a matter of days. - hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow! That's what will finally make me get round to building a gaming PC
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0After viewing those 8'000 screen shots I feel like I've played the game and gotten over it already.
- scotsman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, that looks freakin amazing. But I wonder what sort of grunt it will require to run it? Thousands of bucks worth of video card no doubt.
- GeneralAntilles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1X-Plane is the best. Physics will beat out graphics and candy anyday (though the graphics in X-Plane have improved a lot, especially with the release of the global scenery package) plus it runs on Mac.
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Am I the only one thats a little disappointed? To me the colors and shadings look kind of cartoony.
- aliensporebomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0X-Plane 8.3 with the 60 gig global scenery pack looks great but there are
some things in the screen shots here I was very impressed by - water and
ground textures looked amazing.
X-Plane is much more realistic for actual flight dynamics, also runs on the
Mac and is generally updated/improved on a more frequent and consistent
basis.
But I will say the shots here were pretty impressive. When do they ship? - lerpon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks great! I can't wait for it to come out.
You can find some of the same images but at 1024x768 at http://fsinsider.com/screenshots/ - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A few editions ago they made the planes look realistic, then the last one I played they fixed the clouds to look realistic. Finaly they did something about the ground. It looks great too.
- tweeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea and that was rendered on what? "Deep blue"!....
- brucer69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"In my opinion, M$ Flight Simulator is and always will be a piece of crap. The airplanes fly nowhere near how the real ones do. The systems are not modeled, the ATC sucks, and the physics are TERRIBLE. I wish Microsoft would get together with X-Plane to produce a truly remarkable simulator. After all, all Microsoft does it pretty up the game instead of focusing on making it realistic. Just my $0.02"
I must agree, i fly for a living and have always been disappointed with the realism of both flight sim and x plane, they both are appealing more to the game side rather then the simulator side. I would not go as far as calling them a peace of crap but i would think they could make it alittle more advanced, with more advanced systems on the larger aircraft. Regardless it still looks really good and i imagine i would still buy it. - fitchmicah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are they going to give it a dock, aqua interface, and POSIX specifications too?
- designerjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This looks so cool. I remember playing Flight Simulator back in the day on the IBM PC Jr. It was such a great game for the time.
- Deinonych, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks incredible. I may have to pick this version up.
- Legion303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...but in the interest of fairness, MSFS does have the best in-game flight training tutorials I've seen, something X-Plane is sadly missing. I have about 60GB worth of X-Plane installed (including satellite textures) on my laptop, but I also ran a minimal FS2K install entirely for the tutorials...
- Rossitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HiddenForce:
Seattle. - oblack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i forgot a few things, u may want to wait to actually wait till u know what the system requirements are for FSX before u buy a new computer, for all u know, a new athlon or intel processor may come out that is twice the speed of out current processors, so its better to sit and wait, i know i will buy FSX before i buy a new computer although, i wont be able to play it till i buy a new one, my computer could barely handel FS2002, much less FS2004 or even worse FSX, and in X-Plane, i dont think u have flying birds, other airtraffic or moving cars, but FSX does (the moving cars and the birds would make me mad cause now i hate FS2002, it seems so boring to me compared to the video of FSX i seen)
- rYno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good thing for the mirror site... who uses image shack?
I guess the digg effect killed another one.
So can't wait for this game - need to dig out the FFjoystick again! -
