- b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -5/+61Argh, why do you people not get it?? If an article makes it to the front page, it's because THE DIGG COMMUNITY IS INTERESTED IN IT. That means it deserves to be on the front page. Quit whining.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35MY POKEMANS.
LET ME CONNECT THEM. - hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -12/+33Great, I just loved the connectivity between the Gamecube and the GBA.
/sarcasm - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"just haven't had the guts to say it :)"
This is the intertubes. If you don't have the 'guts' to 'say' something in a near-anonymous environment, then you may have some serious issues. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Zelda: Four Swords says hi.
- Sarev0k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Perhaps Nintendo will offer the ability to play some Virtual Console games (most likely NES and SNES) on your DS.
I for one would love to take SMB3 with me on the go. - navster15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I know its tough to do, but if you get four player with GBA's and a Gamecube, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is one of the best multiplayer games you can buy. Methinks this will be a little easier to do with the DS and Wii.
- Kardde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10That would be pretty awesome. Turn each Wii into a DS demo download station, with a dedicated DS channel. Nintendo would be daft not to take advantage of that.
- Madh2orat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Wireless wii + wireless DS = Duh
- DeepDoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8to be fair, my kids love the GBA Gamecube thingy. They use it in Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventure and in Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
My wife has a DS lite (the pink one of course) and loves the DS Demo Download. Every time we go to Gamestop, she gets a new demo for it. Having that built into the Wii would certainly help me convince that we need a Wii. - rewquio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I wonder if this has to do with the DS Demo downloads that Nintendo mentioned a while back.
- XStatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How about using the DS and Wifi to connect through the Wii and allow messaging to Wii Friends?
- garyc83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How about a writeable cartridge for the DS so we can store downloaded content between uses? I hate having the memory on my DS nuked whenever i turn her off.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6At what point will you have to pay for anything? They're talking about functionality being built into games, not separate software. If anything, it's going to be cheaper than the GBA-GameCube linkups, since you won't even need a cable this time 'round.
- JazzFlight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7How about they just focus on streamlining the whole DS/Wii Friends Code debacle they call their online service?
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No, if Sony did this with the PSP, no one would care because they already couldn't afford a PSP and now that the PS3 is out, they can't afford that either. You can buy a Wii, a DS, and burn a few hundred dollars in a fire and still come out spending less than the price of a PS3. It's a no-brainer.
- insanewriters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I am hoping for either Mii integration or perhaps a virtual console on the DS. If whatever Nintendo does is good, there will be a nice Apple-like effect where one good product sells another.
- Spire3660, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@DarkStalker
Why should you have to pay for it twice? If you have it on your Wii, and there is DS-Wii connectivity, why not allow you to space-shift? You already paid the license to play the game. Just my $.02, please avoid the Verizon jokes. - Lobut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@navster15
Crystal Chronicles was about the only game to put me to sleep in the past few years. I went through the effort of getting four gbas (I owned 2) and buying four cables as well as buying Crystal Chronicles and Four Swords. I swear, it was SO boring. It was slow, it was grueling ... I couldn't stand it. That's just my opinion about it though.
Also, the thing that drove me insane about Four Swords was that you couldn't skip the intro and second of all the cord signal would die sometimes and it would reset the game when it detected it. So basically we went through the intro four times and got sick of the game.
Damnit Nintendo. Wii + DS better be done right. You have a great opportunity here. - cisox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@Lobut
I personally find Crystal Chronicles more rewarding when played with other people, but I commend you for buying four GBA's and playing it yourself. That takes talent. - nicholas761, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nintendo kept metioning it BEFORE launch, but after the launch they haven't said a word about it. :(
- MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes...virtual console games on the DS! *drool*
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Translation:
Waaaaaa! Why does my game system suck?! I should've bought a Wii instead of a PS3!!!! Waaahahahaaaa! - justnisdead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@navster15
FF: CC is an awesome game and I definitely wouldn't mind seeing them bring something like that back for the Wii. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I paid $250 for my Wii and I feel like I got my money's worth just with the basic game system--anything else is a bonus. If I had paid $500-600 I'd expect it to do everything and do it well out of the box. It's not our fault Sony chose to set the bar so high. It's no different than expecting more from a Mercedes than a Ford.
- sm4k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Didn't they more or less announce this prior to even the "We're calling it Wii" announcement?
The Gameboy Advance/Gamecube connection was pretty well done, when developers attempted to do so. I would imagine combining two of the best selling consoles in recent history would bear sweeter fruit than the Schwarzenegger/Divito pairing of GBA/GC. - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nintendo is just too cautious about child predators, being that they have the bulk of the market when it comes to kids. But being that nintendo is now reaching for a larger demographic i think its okay to have an online service that is at least remotely similar to xbox live.
I dont want to play against random people i cant talk to just because nintendo is afraid that a 40 year old man will try to cyber with a 10 year old. Playing against random, silent people online feels like playing single player. - dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The problem was that it required a $10 cable to connect the two. I don't know about you but I wasn't about shell out $40 to fully take advantage of one game.
- Pundan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hopefully this won't cost a dime since both consoles are Wi-Fi enabled.
- PhantomC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How can Nintendo be working on something thats already out in Japan? (pokemon battle revolution)
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They could do Pacman VS as an entirely VC game using the DS download game mode. That would definitely be my first VC purchase.
- MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Kind of sad that I couldn't even think of a runner up!
- tedbradford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I'd love to see the Wii used as a DS demo download hub. That'd be really neat. :)
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope this will actually be used for something useful, personalyl id prefer if the GBAGC connectivity didnt exsist.
True, some games did actually use it for something decent, like Wind Waker. But the vast majority of the GC games that supported the link just used the GBA as a key to unlock something that was already in the game. Many games just unlocked a special skin, character, artwork etc that was already on the disk but unless you bought and connected it with a certain GBA game you could not access it.
I hope this dosent happen again with the DS and Wii. - mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"As I said, you already paid for the license to play the game, why should you have to pay twice?"
Because you have the license to play it on the NES, not the GBA, Wii, etc. You did not buy a license to play it on a system that wouldn't even be thought up for two decades. That's why. The trade-in concept is a good idea, but where's the profit in it for Nintendo? - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Playing against random, silent people online feels like playing single player."
I agree for the most part. Online Mario Kart on the DS has a very non-online feeling, but online tetris, by virtue of the fact that the top screen is dedicated to their playfields, creates a connection that breaks through that somewhat.
Overall though.. It definitely feels like Nintendo isn't serious about online gaming.
Particularly bad is Clubhouse games. Basically a huge collection of games that are primarily social.. but all you can do with non-friends is say completely canned things like "Cool" and "Hi" I played poker on it once, and in theory it's really cool, to just chill on the couch and be able to play poker against other people anytime.. but it just feels so disconnected and boring. - cpc197c, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One of the largest problems with the GC and GBA connections is that not only did you need to find 4 GBA's, you needed 4 cables to match. This made it very expensive, espically for 2-4 games. And if you don't have 4 GBA's, it's still hard for your friends to come over with their GBA's and just use them on your system. Now you either have to buy the connections yourself or rely on your friends.
The DS should work great with the Wii. Since they are both wireless, there is no cable involved. This way, your friends can come over and just turn on their DS and play. If done correctly, (IE, minus the friend codes), it will be a hit. - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FF:CC for GC was awesome. The thing that sucks about multiplayer RPGs on a console is that you have to stop the action for everyone else if you want to go into your menu, etc. Square-enix changed all that by moving it onto another screen - your Gameboy!
Now the DS has two screens and one of them is a touch screen. And there are no wires involved. Somebody needs to think up a cool idea that doesn't involve Pokemon because I'll be buying it on day one! Unfortunately, I've heard that FF:CC's limited success has discouraged Square from system-to-portable connectivity. :/ - Spire3660, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Its called the halo effect, Apple does not have a monopoly on this marketing strategy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo_effect - flickr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pacman was great fun with a Gameboy Advance.
- Spire3660, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2By extension , yes, you should be able to. Perhaps a usb cart reader that could plug into the Wii. As I said, you already paid for the license to play the game, why should you have to pay twice? Or have a trade in system, turn in your old SMB cart into your local gamestop, get a code to enter into your wii for that game. The point is, when the media companies try to make us re-buy our old collections on new media ( i.e. DVD to Blu-ray, casette to CD), there should be a way to turn in the physical media while retaining the license. This of course doesn't take into account value-added features, etc. This is the the way we should be trying to shape future IP law. It is the license that is important, not the delivery mechanism. Please go easy on the digg downs, as this is more of a thought-experiment, than an argument.
- VGLegends, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here what I want out of this.
1#Making the Wii become a DS download station in which you download the demo for the Wii Shop Channel and then be able to play it through the DS witht the download play option on the main screen. President Iwata talked about this but that was back in June.
2#DS to Wii control and transfer of information. The DS could make an interesting controller for some Wii games and would give you your own screen for personal use in multiplayer. I also believe that in Pokemon Revoultion that the DS control is being used and also the transfer of Pokemon from Diamond and Pearl. - darkmule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to the press site (Nintendo's) there is already Wii and DS connectivity. Maybe these are enchantments coming.
The GBA/GCN connectivity sucked because the GCN wasn't dynamic enough. Both the DS and Wii are very dynamic, and have interesting little features. I believe both also use bluetooth in one way or another. I can't wait to see what they have coming. - sm4k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's not like you had to pop a quarter in every time you played the game.
Considering that the GBA sold as much as it did, it is not out of the question for them to assume that there was a market of people who had both devices. I never viewed it as them trying to get people to buy GBAs as much as it was to give a kickback to people who had purchased both. You don't HAVE to buy a DS to use a Wii, you'll just need both for particular experiences, and I think that's pretty damn awesome, considering I already own the DS. - firefly702, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg can not be viewed on the wii wtf?
- Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2haha Geoff, You got your ass buried!
- DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2By your logic, that means I should already have SMB since I "paid for the license" some 20 years ago. It doesn't work that way as much as I would like it to. In the meantime, buying the GBA version is the only way.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Hrm why did they not do this in the first place...
oh right because they always do that....
lame
If sony did this with the ps3 and psp people would be like
LAME LAME THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT IN THE FIST PLACE!
but with the wii. people are always like coooooooooooooool. - alkalineromance, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3It worked very well for Pacman Vs. And that was just about it.
- musbou, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1And you have to pay for this...
No wonder the gamecube/gameboy advance combination was a failure. -
