I wanted to ask if they pulled this statement out of their ass, where is the official press release. - Wailord, on 10/11/2007, -5/+31Nintendo has responded back by saying that this price cut is unlikely to affect the sales of their Nintendo Wii console.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata further confirmed in a statement that the hardware side of its Wii game console business has turned profitable.

That was...incredibly lame. - meshgiath, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22Arrogant would be a statement like Sony or Microsoft would say about the Wii. If THEY were asked to comment, they'd bash the system, tell WHY it sucked in their eyes and then say 'we don't care'.
Nintendo just said that the cut was "unlikely to affect wii sales".
That sounds nothing like "Well, programmers don't like it, they keep losing exclusives, the games that were SUPPOSED to be there at LAUNCH are STILL not there, the games that they DO have are rehashes of the same old thing, and their management knows it because they're all gaming-ignorant and only care about the cash side of things." All of which is true, but Nintendo didn't go there. Learn to use your dictionary. - nukethewhales, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21"You also have to keep in mind that to fully enjoy the Wii, you have to purchase numerous expensive peripherals and that all adds up."
What's up with that sentence? The Wii comes with the system, the controller, and Wii Sports. What else do you have to buy? I mean even if you buy 3 more controllers with the system so your family can play tennis it doesn't add up to as much as you pay for the PS3 with one controller and no game. - PeteBeast, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22"Nintendo has responded back by saying that this price cut is unlikely to affect the sales of their Nintendo Wii console"
What that means is that Ninty's sales won't be affected, which is true. Not that Sony's will be unaffected. - throwingks, on 10/11/2007, -8/+25Buried as inaccurate for 2 reasons.
"I have always thought the Wii was an interesting system, but it has sold well for it’s seemingly low price. You also have to keep in mind that to fully enjoy the Wii, you have to purchase numerous expensive peripherals and that all adds up."
"It’s all about the games. With the current prices, you basically get what you pay for system-wise." - Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16...or like Nintendo in the mid-90s.
- sterling1989, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18FTA
"You also have to keep in mind that to fully enjoy the Wii, you have to purchase numerous expensive peripherals and that all adds up."
I smell a Sony fanboy. - yargthepirate, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17the statement was that it will not change anything for Nintendo, genius
- JayD16, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1880GB bundle for $599*
I think Sony will throw out a core pack or what have you for $499 with the 80GB but no game in it. - charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -8/+20You just pointed out Nintendo's greatest strength, and yet greatest weakness at the same time. I'm so sick of Mario, and Zelda games. Nintendo needs do some new things and needs fresh ideas for their GAMES desperately. The irony of your statement is that Nintendo is doing well this time BECAUSE of their hardware, in spite of Mario, not because of.
If you think the first party titles from Sony are lame, and shoving Mario into every possible game is awesome, well then that's your prerogative. Sony produces some of the best most original content out there. I would rather play Lair, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted Drakes Adventure, Ratchet and Clank Future, Little Big Planet, or Warhawk over any of the 15 Mario games Nintendo will release over the next year. - charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13I have to agree with JayD, when Sony said they were doing a price cut, there was no going back. When 60GB PS3's are gone, the 80gb without the game etc will become the $499 base model. I guarantee it. Sony knows $600 isn't going to cut it by now.
- SvMidtown, on 10/11/2007, -14/+24Not really agreeing with Tairi or anything(only on where they seem to be going), but the "casual gamers" that Nintendo is going after isn't what I classify as a gamer. I'm not holding it against them, I'm not saying they are "betraying" me, I'm just saying that I enjoy games that are a challenge and are fun, and hell, ones that have plot. Again not saying the Wii controls are a gimmick.
I watched the Nintendo press conference and wasn't impressed. They spent a bulk of their time talking about the WiiFit. Again, not saying it's(the board) a bad product, but E3 should be about games, not workout equipment, not based on an accessory that isn't free or even guaranteed to be used in something more interesting than WiiFit.
I feel like because I enjoy "real"(for lack of a better word) games I'm not an important consumer for Nintendo. I do have a Wii and a 360 can't bring my self to buy a PS3 yet, but I will.Yeah they have SSBB and Metroid not to mention SMG, but RE4 and Zelda I've both played on the GC I'm not counting ports from GC I mean games designed for the WII.
In short they seem to worried about sales to try to find some "real" games. WiiFit may be fun and everything, but it will lose my attention like WiiSports did. Hell, it's still a question to me if it will even be fun. They are "expanding" the market of gaming with a gimmick, and they seem to want to keep it. They aren't saying to me "We are fun for everyone, but if you really like to game we have stuff for you too." . Where are the titles built from the ground up for the Wii, ones that take full advantage of the Wiimote. Ones with good stories and creative game play, yeah I'm asking for a lot, but right now I'm not even being informed of the "amazing" games. (so much for being "in short") But I want them they have something for me too, not just refurb series and ported games.
If your lost, the "Digg Down" button is the red one in the top right hand corner. - Nate2638, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12"Numerous Expensive Peripherals"? This guy has no idea what he's talking about.
- KingGoonie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Exactly, I have like 10 games and aside from the classic controller, I have no additional accessories, only those that came with system...
- superfly007, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12No, they're not in the least. There is nothing arrogant about stating that an artificial price drop (clearance sale) would have any effect on Nintendo.
If Sony could drop the PS3 premium price to $400, and get a few games worth buying on the shelves, then Nintendo would possibly have something to worry about.
Did you want Nintendo to issue a response that lied and said they were actually worried because Sony couldn't move units and slashed the price on their console? - sam10685, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11It will not effect anything. Ever. Trust me. (It might affect stuff though.)
- jellygraph, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10this really seems like the biggest non-story ever... well done, digg
- jeremymccurdy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Have you actually played any of the Pokemon games? They're pretty fun to play.
- allengeer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Say you're nintendo's PR department and the Sony price goes down. ABOUT 400 gaming magazines, newspapers, journalists all send you emails and call your office saying WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?!?!?! And so they responded. Nothing.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I think a bigger problem for the 360 is the quality issue. I think that's only going to continue to get worse, with more media attention, and people aren't going to want to buy it until they actually redesign the system and FIX the problem. Three year warranty or not.
- Ashkc88, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10@coasters2k
Hey, my girlfriend and I both play Pokemon and are both over 18 thank you very much. Just because the game doesn't appeal to you, doesn't mean it's a bad game. - enforcerpsu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Spoken like a true 14 year old fanboy. Way to back up the stereotype champ. Why don't you tell us why the PS3 is in a distant 3rd? I would love to hear it.
- enforcerpsu, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11I'd like to know how you expect the PS3 to generate more sales with its non-earth shattering releases. Because I don't see anything coming out that I can't get on another system or appeals to me. (MGS? snore) Oh, don't forget the price cut was just a liquidation sale. SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY, $499!! THESE PRICES ARE INSAAAAANE!
- jm9206755, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8The 80GB system is cheaper to produce en masse because that size of HDD is more standard than 60GB. Combined with the elimination of the PS2 hardware from the system they could easily offer a non-bundled 80GB system for $499.
- Ashkc88, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Personally I'm not that sick of Mario and Zelda, but I can see where you are coming from. As soon as third party developers figure out the Wii-mote well enough, we'll see other games come out on it. The Wii needs it's third party games, because that's what kept the NES and SNES going back in the day. The Wii and the PS3 are still in their launch title phase though, so we'll see some good third (and first) party games come out soon. This will be good, we need good games on all three next gen systems for competition, allowing each console to push for bigger better games. In the end, we'll all win. Especially those of us who bought all three. (not me though, yet)
- hockey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6don't forget Nintendo of the mid-80's
- KingGoonie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I dunno.. I think the Wii has had the best first year launch in 15 years... I have never bought so many games in the 8 months of any system release... and as far as I am concerned it has has the most great games period since Novmeber... better then ps3 obviously... but also 360, ps2, ds, psp, etc
- HolyChimp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Wii hardware sales were profit from day one, whereas the 360s were sold at a loss for at least a year (not sure on exact figures these days). All Nintedo had to cover is R&D, which would also be less than the 360, since they went with older, more proven hardware.
- vulapine, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7First, Blueray is no more proprietary than HDDVD (or however you're supposed to parse those initials). Remember that the issue with Betamax (which is still in use, by the way) was that Sony was the ONLY producer of the hardware. Blueray players are manufactured by several electronics companies.
Next, it's way premature to say that the PS3 is dead (or that any other system has won the 'war'). It hasn't even been a year.
Finally, going back to the whole issue of proprietary formats, I can't run an Xbox 360 disc on anything but an Xbox360, a Wii disc on anything but a Wii or a PS3 disc on anything but a PS3. Please show me a console manufacturer that hasn't gone with "Proprietary formats and forced purchasing". - tnoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You find it odd they made the comment? I have no doubt in my mind that Nintendo was getting flooded with emails and letters by "journalists" asking for a comment about the price drop of the PS3. Its just a polite way of telling people to stop asking.
- Wratherin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6The thing is, Nintendo is not (fully) to blame there. Developers must hop on and start developing those games. Nintendo most certainly should have been making those kinds of games already, but it's understandable that they've expected third parties to. Unfortunately most third party developers seem to have taken a wait and see approach and just recently are realizing the money to be made on the Wii. So while in the past there has not been that many good games for your "hard core" gamer. There will be more to come and most likely in the not too distant future.
- staticneuron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5what are you talking about? I would have remembered if I had played a game as refined as gears of war in 1995. Or dead rising, I don't think my computer back then could even handle a video running at 720p much less motorstorm. I think I had a 133mhz back then. So please refrain from calling someone else an uniformed fanboy when you decide to say something as equally stupid.
- 9mmCensor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Any story that starts with a massive picture of a company logo, is garbage. Who did the lay out for that piece. Its horrible.
- Konstantino, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6"You also have to keep in mind that to fully enjoy the Wii, you have to purchase numerous expensive peripherals and that all adds up."
Okay, what the hell? The Wii comes with a Wiimote, nunchuck, and even a GAME. How can you not enjoy it out of the box? - endyminion, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Maybe you need to rediscover your inner child, coasters2k.
- Dracker, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Surprisingly enough to dismissive folks, pokémon is the second best selling video game franchise.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games#Franchises
There are a LOT of fans out there. - TypeEE, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Yeah, like Sony doesn't require you to buy peripherals. Sony comes with one sixaxis remote, while Wii comes with one wii-mote + nunchunk. I think that's fair across all consoles in the recent past. If you want multi player, you need to spend $60 for a wiimote+nunchuck, however they have some interesting deal where wiiplay includes wiimote. those are not bad deals.
- razmig, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6i think its funny when idiotic people make stupid comments like yours.
- raptordrew, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Well, you win for most duplicate comments on an article... unfortunately, there is no prize, try again!
- TheUngod, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4...how is it arrogant to NOT drop your price again? If you're still selling out regularly, I just don't see why they'd want to bother doing that honestly.
- insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -16/+20Umm, Sony isn't cutting prices. I thought that was a well established fact by now.
- JonLatane, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Actually, it might EFFECT a change in momentum in the console wars.
effect, v.:
1. To bring into existence.
2. To produce as a result.
3. To bring about.
http://www.answers.com/effect&r=67
If you're going to be a grammar nazi, at least be correct in your pointless, annoying criticism. - KingGoonie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Wasn't that confirmed by Sony themselves though? That its being discontinued?
- cjsoques, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5yes, this article is contradictory and is the fail .... people need to proof read for consistency
- raitchison, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Which will cost the same as the $60 price originally, what they did was run a sale on the old models to clear out stock (that was gathering dust on the shelves while people fought over Wiis.
- tnoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I think of myself as a big supporter of the PS3, and even I think you're an idiot.
- thebellmaster1x, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"nintendo ruining gaming since the gamecube"
Er, I'm sorry, could you remind us what Sony system was out during the age of the NES/SNES?
...Oh, right.
Also, give these a shot:

The Wii is outselling the PS3 3:1 worldwide, and 6:1 in Japan.
Additionally, if you're going to list Sony's "great" games, try listing things like Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Mega Man, Star Fox, F-Zero, et cetera for Nintendo. By the way, don't forget that Final Fantasy (which they should have just renamed "Police Academy" by now), Metal Gear, and Chrono Trigger all started on the NES.
You, sir, are a goddamn fool. - nova9, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I find it odd that you had to think it is odd.
