- LLamaStar, on 12/09/2007, -6/+338The U.S. should change it's currency to Wii's.
- greenblob, on 12/09/2007, -3/+211How about promoting the Wii games? Some of the Wii's greatest games, such as Metroid and Zack & Wiki, could use some love.
- dime, on 12/09/2007, -6/+152How ***** fitting would it have been if this thing was still called the Revolution.
- KnockoutNerd, on 12/09/2007, -12/+143Wow, even as a fanboy for Nintendo, I never thought the Wii would be a hit.
- aywwts4, on 12/09/2007, -5/+72Let me explain a few economic principals as insultingly simply as I possibly can, while remaining rude and demeaning throughout.
Lets say you have a lemonade stand, you sell lemonade for 5 cents a glass. A lot of people get thirsty, and you run out of lemonade, do you sit there smugly at how wonderful it is that nobody is paying you for lemonade that you cannot sell them, would you purposefully make less lemonade than you could, so you could turn down more thirsty people? Especially when there are competing lemonade stands down the block?
Secondly, if you knew people were only really thirsty for a few days, but soon the heatwave would be over and nobody would need as much lemonade all at once would you go through the hassle and expense of buying more pitchers to hold lemonade in, hire more of your playmates to sell the lemonade and build a giant factory in china to make the lemonade and ship it to America to keep up with this weeks supply? Only to be left with a giant multi-milion dollar factory you don't need and a few thousand pissed off Chinese workers when you lay them off after the rush.
No Jareth, you wouldn't, because that would be stupid. - celkin, on 12/09/2007, -3/+64Now the PS3 isn't so pricey--just 1.6 Wiis
Of course I only have 2 Wiis, so I get a 3 DS's and a VC download as change. - xXdredgXx, on 12/09/2007, -6/+63awww no more oiled boobs??
- legendxx, on 12/09/2007, -6/+51you need friends
- garagethrash, on 12/09/2007, -1/+46Promoting the games indirectly promotes the console.
- Smwbigboss, on 12/09/2007, -9/+50The Wii has been sold out since launch last year. Are you sure you're not thinking about the PS3?
- BaldMonkey, on 12/09/2007, -4/+45How is the demand issue in the US even possible, over here in Sweden you can find Wiis everywhere. Even my grocery store has a bunch of them. I think its the same all over Europe.
- cowboy86, on 12/09/2007, -2/+42It's a joke, chill kid.
- kigabit, on 12/09/2007, -1/+39Yes

"[W]e don't care how good a game system is, as long as it's under a certain price point."
So you're saying that the Wii is successfully only because of it's cost? Let me introduce you to the Game Cube. Same price point as every other console Nintendo has released. Definitely not the most popular. It would also be a hard stretch to say it even came in second, even though it beat the Xbox to market, if I remember correctly. It had it's own unique games. It had the same stable of games as the other consoles. It had a similar control system. And yet, it was largely ignored. It is definitely "under a certain price point" ... why did it fail? Or more importantly, why did the Wii succeed?
The success of the Wii has a bit to do with it's price point, but a much large factor, I would argue, is the fact that the technology is easy and fun to play. A lot of modern games (and gaming companies) have forgotten that fact. The Wii may be a little quirky and I wouldn't want anyone filming me play a game with it, but I've had a blast with every game I've play on it. It is fun. It is different. It is innovative. It is appealing to a different type of gamer. And that is why it is outselling it's competition. - ispshadow, on 12/09/2007, -7/+38Jesus, that's pimp.
Your ***** is so popular you can't afford to tell any new people about it. - felman87, on 12/09/2007, -2/+33After E306, I knew people would go for it.
- chroko, on 12/09/2007, -0/+28I have never seen a Wii on a shelf in a store in my area. Nobody can keep them in stock. Whenever stores get a delivery, there's a rush (and much frantic text-messaging) - and they immediately sell out again.
This includes Best Buy, CompUSA, Target and my local Gamestop (which eventually posted a sign on their door saying "we do not have Wii in stock" - and then they try to sell you a Playstation 3). - Drull, on 12/09/2007, -2/+30SOOOOOO glad I pre-ordered mine.
You know, I actually had a friend try and make fun of me for doing so, claiming after the big Christmas rush, wii's would be available everywhere.
It took him like until March to find one. - DuffyDirect, on 12/09/2007, -3/+31People today have nothing but worship and nostalgia for the N64 right now and for the longest time the only games that were even out on that system were mario 64, pilot wings, and mortal kombat trilogy. It took a loooonnnnggggg time for goldeneye, shadow of the empire, jet force gemini, mario kart, zelda, diddy racing, etc. to come out -- so stfu with this nonsense about the wii and ps3 being disasters when they've only been out for a year!
- saisumimen, on 12/09/2007, -0/+23Don't try to play it off, Chris. We all saw what you did.
- aywwts4, on 12/09/2007, -1/+23Uh.. a Wii costs the same price as it always has, individuals are selling it on ebay and craigslist for much more, and some stores are bundling it with a bunch of accessories to drive up profit, but Nintendo is taking in the same price as on launch day. Nintendo has absolutely not done what you are talking about. Unless Nintendo is involved in some secret craigslist scam where they sell .1% of their stock online for "a way higher price"
"-Nintendo Wii's for sale. Brand New w/reciept - $500 (Redmond) pic
I have 5 Nintendo Wii's new in the box. $500 cash and its yours. COmes with original reciept, pickup at 4820 150th Ave NE
Redmond, WA, look for the giant corporate building on the left with the big mario statue." - Trogdor420, on 12/09/2007, -0/+21Huh? Whats that? Nintendo is releasing 1.8 million Wii consoles per month (only a handful ?!?). Do you think that there is some magic switch that Nintendo flips to make the conveyor belts move faster? Nobody, not even Nintendo could foresee how popular the Wii was going to be. The problem is not so much in production, it is the HUGE demand. And don't forget they are pumping out 2.5 million Ds's a month. To suggest that Nintendo is purposely limiting their profits by 'releasing only a handful of consoles' is a bit short sighted on your part. Now go back to your 360 and quit wasting everyones time!
- bubbakja, on 12/09/2007, -7/+28The only time I saw a wii is when I would swing by gamestop at lunch time. I dunno where you saw them as available...
- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -0/+21So the least powerful console wins again this gen, huh?
- R3Dirkulous, on 12/09/2007, -4/+25How does it reek of it... the only time artificial shortages come in to play is maybe in the first couple months of being released...not a year later..and sure as hell not during the holidays. Have you seen the number of wiis being sold each moth, theyre huge. You cant produce them any faster than theyre being sold. As of right now, it is the fastest selling system ever, so the "well they arent producing many" argument is dumb IMO.
- AydenV2, on 12/09/2007, -1/+21No suprise. I was in Best Buy yesterday, and at the shelf opposite me there was literally 3 seperate people asking for a wii in the short time I was looking for a new PSP game (I would say 10 minutes) It's amazing how often wiis are bought and asked for.
- spamalot69, on 12/09/2007, -0/+20wish i had nintendo stock.
- samhale, on 12/09/2007, -1/+21change the ads to the NDS?
That's sold out in the UK as well. Got no chance buying a Pink Lite... - oMeSSiaHo, on 12/09/2007, -0/+19I work at an office supply store and people ask me if we have Wiis. I remember the night it launched, driving around and seeing the lines, I had no idea it was going to be so huge. Its kinda fun to see Nintendo back on top. It fills my fanboy heart with warmth.
- ZenMojo, on 12/09/2007, -3/+21Seriously, there's Zack and Wiki, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Galaxy, and Zelda: TP. That's at least 4 games for the Wii!
- Zap2, on 12/09/2007, -0/+17well it still fitting, but now its more of a secret name....hardcore fans will remember it
- plurk, on 12/09/2007, -2/+19Yes.
The digg story is here:
http://www.digg.com/nintendo/12_clips_of_topless_g ... - Soave, on 12/09/2007, -0/+17Super Smash Brothers Brawl is the only game the Wii will ever need. EVER.
- Icebird, on 12/09/2007, -0/+17you mean 4 million a month is too little?
- archivist, on 12/09/2007, -1/+17i remembered an article criticising the wii's weird play-style, controller, etc
but now... - DuffyDirect, on 12/09/2007, -0/+15He's right -- Cali has a lot of them. I bought one in San Diego the other week and I was seriously stared down by hundreds of people as I carried it under my arms coming home at JFK.... scary...
- tardislink, on 12/09/2007, -2/+16I love my Wii! I was lucky enough to have a Wal-Mart open a new store here about 2 months ago and they had about 20 on hand. I grabbed one and by the weekend they were all gone. So this sudden disappearance doesn't surprise me at all. I just hope that the people who really want this get them, and not the scalpers.
- mcduarte2000, on 12/09/2007, -1/+15I'm happier now, I thought it was only in Portugal. Yes, I can buy Wiis everywhere, at the grocery store, or just around the corner. ;)
- jemman, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12Not monetary wise, Nintendo made money on the Gamecube due to there policy of never selling below cost.
- mediaspree, on 12/09/2007, -1/+13Least powerful, cheapest, and most fun....yeah.
- mariowario, on 12/09/2007, -4/+16Well they are doing well with DS. Got a couple decent releases with Mario Party and Phantom Hourglass. I think the general public needs to know more about these games.
- Mrstupid7, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12People still shop at Radio Shack?
- Mrstupid7, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12Weird, it's like they're a business or something.
- Batiu-Drami, on 12/09/2007, -0/+11It's a very, very old promo shot for wii, which had them in multiple colours. (I think they were shown at an E3, but long before they were actually released)
- Mononuclear, on 12/09/2007, -1/+11that would make sense if they actually changed the price, yet the price is and has always been the same. Anyone with a basic idea of economics knows that if you are selling something as fast as you can make it, it doesn't make sense to hold any back and pretend there is a shortage unless you are doing it to create a demand and drive up the price like the diamond market.... which nintendo isn't doing.
- UnWeave, on 12/09/2007, -1/+10I agree with this, until the point where you talk about people saying the Wii is a disaster. Um, who is saying this, exactly? Other than biased to ***** fan-boys.. I mean, have you actually read the title of this article? Anyway, yeah, I'm with you on the PS3 front. MGS4 and GT5 FTW!
- briansorders, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8I'm sure you got laughed at a lot more for waiting 2 days in front of a best buy store
- Mrstupid7, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8Yeah it was insane how huge the demand for the Dreamcast was.
- luet, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8No, a doctor slaps a newborn baby to get the baby to cough up any remnants of the fluid that the baby breathed off of when in utero.
