- maarten, on 10/12/2007, -6/+71The virtual console is enough reason for me to buy the console. I can play those classics whenever I want on my own TV. Just like the good old days. Ah... Chrono Trigger...
Playing on your TV with a console controller beats playing with an emulator =) - chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -11/+56tell me you've never downloaded a single rom. do you really want to pay for your entire nintendo collection again? i paid good money for my cartridges back when they were new, why should i have to repurchase mario 3 or zelda just to play it on the wii?
- SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45Stealing Chrono Trigger? There isn't a single place you can buy it that money will go to Square/Enix, you'll only find it in secondhand stores where all the money goes to the store. Same for eBay.
- Zeusandhera, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Bonk's Adventure for the TGFX! All my questions have been answered!
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30All this Wii stuff is torturing me.. I want one now! :(
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -27/+53chaosmachine: some of us don't like stealing software.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33There's also the whole legal thing. Plus regardless of what people may say I feel like an official emulator will be likely to work better than one of the many PC ones out there.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Unless you have someone sitting next to you, grabbing your hand and making you click them, then I have a solution: Don't read them.
Since this is a democracy, you could even mark them as lame and 'make your vote count'. It's just unfortunate that not many other people agree with you, so Wii stories will make it to the front page anyway. Sorry. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Chrono Trigger and other 3rd party titles may or may not be available on the virtual console. We'll have to see how that goes. Hopefully, Nintendo can get these people to resell these defunct titles (and other non-defunct ones, like the ones Square likes to re-release).
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Mentioning the virtual boy is like saying the name of the Scottish Play in a theater. Now go outside, turn around three times, face north, spit and you'll have made amends.
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Seriously. This system can't come out fast enough for me. I gotta play this *****.
Nintendo has thrown haymakers at Sony & MS all week at E3. - synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Using Virtual Console will be just like being seven years old all over again... Except instead of the mall, you're in the living room. And instead of screams, you pay with a few dollars.
- Migdilio, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18This Virtual Console looks virtually flawless.
In the timeless words of Queen: "Wii will, Wii will... rock you!" - MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Sweet, now I don't have to buy a new N64 controller(Mine broke, but I wanna play Majora's mask :( )
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I think the points idea is pretty spot on... not dollars. You'll get points with each purchase, and also be able to buy points on cards and online. For example, buy a new $50 Wii game and get 25 "free" points. A NES game might cost 5 points, SNES/Genesis 15, and an N64 game 25. Everything eill have points... games, extra controllers, controller add ons, the system itself will probably be worth 50-75 points (on my scale). I'm also going to guess, on my scale, that $10 will buy you 30 points.
I also think they will have continual contests with the WiFi service giving points away, and also codes that are good for a specific game, like buying Mario Galaxy gives you codes to get every other Mario game before it, or something like that. I think that this will also help Nintendo keep selling new games, as opposed to the second hand market, which I am sure was some executives yearly performance goal. - galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9My guess is some will be free, some will be purchased by various points. Think Xbox Live Arcade.
- TheGeek27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9They've already said, quite a while ago I believe, that the downloadable games will not be free.
- LocalH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You idiot, when you're playing it on the Gamecube, you're playing it on an emulator.
- Soapdish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I used to have downloaded ROMs, except most of them were ones I already owned. Then I stopped using pirated software (now 100% legal with linux). And I don't have any more ROMs.
My way of justifying having ROMs of games I didn't purchase was that they were no longer available for purchase, which is not the case anymore. Also, I never enjoyed playing on the PC emulators as much as on the original system. - TroubleT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Here's hoping there is a way to get old titles we already own into this thing. I'd like to get rid of my N64, but I don't want to have to buy the Zelda games again. Maybe Nintendo could do a media turn in program. You send them your old cartridge and they unlock the game in the Virtual Console for you.
Yeah, fat chance, I know. At least GC games will work with it. - MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Online would be so awesome! Especially N64 games like Mario Kart, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark...
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I want GoldenEye 007!
- wicked9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9http://67.18.208.172/media/561/
- csyberblue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8brings back some good memories of playing those games.
I stopped playing games over a year ago, and I grew tired of them. But having some old favorites back, and all those awesome DS games is bringing me back. Nintendo's plan is working, I'm getting a DS lite and a Wii on the first day! - TeamOverload, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7No, Nintendo said they dont want to announce that yet
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The one thing that emulators don't do very well is online multiplayer. I am hope full that they can add this feature in. Add in some great 3rd party support and you have a winner.
- PRESS_00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If it were free, there wouldn't be any partners like Sega with their Genesis games.
- TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Loosk great, any word yet on pricing?
- VegaObscura3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6pr0n scares you?
- knotty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Do you think they will go the whole nine yards and enable multiplayer games be playable over the internet ? Like Kaillera allows for PC emulators ?
Kaillera is a bit laggy but I'd imagine Nintendo can do a whole lot better, especially with identical machines at both ends and the speed of the net getting ever faster ....
SNES Mario Kart, Super Tennis, Secret of Mana, 4 Player Super Bomberman. These would be great online if the lag issue could be resolved! - TedTschopp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Huh, you think it's free to steal something. Or is it that you won't miss what it costs?
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I've got a SNES sitting next to my TV, with Super Mario Kart in it. Does that mean that I'm stealing if I use an emulator to play Super Mario Kart on my media center PC, laptop, PocketPC, PSP, GameBoy Advance, iPod, or dishwasher? No. I own the bloody game, and I'm going to play it wherever the hell I want, ON whatever the hell I want. Just because I didn't personally rip the ROM from my exact cartridge doesn't mean that it's illegal for me to download someboy else's rip.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"or they could have renamed the A into a Star or something. star, mario, nah."
I think Sony has shown that naming buttons after a shape is stupid. It's a round button, but it's CALLED SQUARE. WTF?! Letters and numbers are much clearer and easier. - deweyhewson, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13I agree, I'm as excited about the Wii as anyone else, and it's probably the only next-gen console I'll be buying, at least right away. But as far as Virtual Console is concerned, get an XBox, mod it, and voila, your own Virtual Console...
I'm not saying I condone stealing, but old roms are roughly in the same area as abandonware. Not strictly legal, but not like taking a game from the shelf either. - mattkelly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Anyone notice that the font used for "Virtual Console" is nearly the SAME font that was used for the Virtual Boy?
http://www.videogameconnection.com/images/VBOYmarioclashbox.jpg - CoolDude330, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I was looking around the site, and thank god they changed the two bottom buttons on the controller! A and B were sort of confusing when theres already an A at the top... 1 and 2 are much better.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I actually think that would make for a good commercial.
- Soapdish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6They're not abandonware anymore - atleast not the ones on virtual console.
- contradictator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Dugg for old school gaming and timless rock anthems.
- tweaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4While the point system speculation is interesting, several reps have stated that it'll be a pay-to-play system. I don't have the quote in front of me, but to paraphrase: "For 1st party games, NES games could be a couple of dollars, SNES games for five, and N64 games for maybe 10 dollars."
However, it was also suggested by the reps that some games could come with free bonus downloads (ie, Mario Galaxy including a free download of Mario World or something like that).
3rd party games will be more hit and miss, with those companies setting their own prices, assuming that they even agree to release their games on the virtual console setup. Also, I think it's extremely unlikely that Gamecube games will be available, as they're still on the market, and they're prohibitively large for commercial online distribution. - galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You need to get ahold of the GC Zelda discs, then. One was made of Ocarina of Time (including the Master Quest) and another also has Ocarina of Time, but then has Majora's Mask, along with the original Zelda and Zelda II.
- shoover, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You're what... 12?
- jull1234, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Its not "stealing", but I understand and agree with the sentiment. I don't want to have to purchase all my old games again, but I also would like to play the old games on the new console. The music/movie industries have been doing this new format thing for years, I suppose it was just a matter of time.
- jull1234, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow, I hadn't heard that they're releasing old Sega console game too. That's awesome.
- eleazar123, on 10/12/2007, -17/+21chaosmachine,
I don't know how you can say it's the same thing by hooking your PC up to a TV.
First of all there is the price of the s-video cable (albeit some video cards come with them).
Second you have to be ok with illegally playing the games (unless of course you own the roms), I think it'll be easier to feel bad about this when they start to offer a legal alternative (ie. Wii)
Third, your PC needs to be near your TV. (or have the cables going all over (not to mention more expensive cables if they need to be longer))
Fourth, you need audio out cables, in addition to the svideo cable unless you want to play with no sound.
Fifth, you need the gamepad
Sixth, You have to download the roms (with all the shady websites out there offering roms and such, this is one step I wouldn't want to go through)
Seventh and the most important thing imo, the experience of it all, you're going to have all these cables coming out of your pc into your tv (for most this would be across open floor most likely (unless it's a media center of course)), the Wii will always work, it will look nice next to your tv, you don't have to buy any extra cables/gamepads/etc etc. No setup required really, other than plugging in your Wii and connecting it to the internet to download the games.
So to sum it all up, I wouldn't say this is the most exciting feature of the Wii, but it is by far a feature worth getting excited about. - Steelfox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No.
- TheslaminJ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Looks sweet! Has anyone found a list of titles yet?
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@tony: the mirror was ultra fast for me..
- stan205, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm hoping around 5 to 10 buck, that way people won't think twice about buying a virtual copy of a game they potential already own.
- Zopmaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6IP to the site.
