- Dannychico, on 10/12/2007, -1/+44They are going to catch Sony and Microsoft so off-guard. The big boys forgot about innovation and carelessly assumed it was all about upgrading processors and tech specs. Nintendo is primed to sneak in and steal the next-gen crown from both.

A link to the video that the article mentions. - TheRappingShoe, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42Wow - Virtual Wii-ality!
Sorry ;) - Klowner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Oh man, if you coupled that stuff with some sort of goggles that'd provide an overlay the computer generated part.. Imagine holding a Wii/Rev controller and seeing a katana in your hands, and fake* ninjas coming at you from all sides.
Seriously though, if they can implement location tracking in a controller, why the heck couldn't you glue a controller to a helmet and have head tracking as well? Considering what we do know the Reborution is capable of, it wouldn't be that far fetched.
*fake ninjas, because you can't see the real ones - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24i'll digg... because the hype is out of control now anyway :)
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Why is this marked as inaccurate? If anyone can say with certainty that this is not true, I'd like to see the evidence.
Rather than "inaccurate," it's an "unknown." It could be true. It could be untrue. None of us can say. But, judging by that video in the comments, at least, it's a possibility. - Adoozie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20As many as it takes.
- Po0py, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Everytime I hear about this next big secret that the revolution has I end up thinking: Projection.
I always come back to that. Projection. - aplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16They're too busy trying to figure out how to get upwards of $600 from their parents.
- aplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I don't really understand why the content of this article is under review. It's only speculation, you shouldn't exactly call it inaccurate. It's very interesting, to say the least. Will this actually be true of the Wii? Probably not but that D'Fusion video may at least help be proof of concept.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15after watching that... perhaps this hype really is worth digging :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18how slow people are to accept the winds of change...
sorry, they could include an '06 Corvette with every xbox360 and their console will still sound like the slang term for some trick in a tony hawk game. - nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17It's marked as inaccurate because the sony and microsoft fanboys dont want to admit how cool this could be.
- liquidoc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14actually, we've seen videos and concept screenshots of people playing on upgraded gamecubes, nothing has actually been played and shown to the public on the wii yet.
- zaid, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20slang term? like teenagers say wii when they mean penis? I thought it was only toddlers...
- betasp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I hope it doesn't run Crysis. Many of us that have been gaming since the Atari are looking for something new. FPS are overdone, MM games are getting tired and role playing is well, just prettier. I would love for something to be different...
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I have to say I favor the big secret being some sort of 3rd immersion feature. Not sure how they would pull it off, but it sounds like that is what the tipster is hinting at in the article.
It's the next logical step to having 3D enabled remote. The 3D effect only has to be in front of you, not really total immersion to be effective.
Imagine playing a Star Wars title on the Wii where you are actually holding the light saber in your hand and using the nunchuck to move around.
I need to calm down because I know deep down this won't happen (in this generation at least) but seriously, how friggin awesome would that be? - badnewsjones, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Well, the graphics won't be up to par on an HD television, but if you're playing in 480i or 480p it honestly probably won't make much of a difference. It's takes a lot of processing power to make the next gen games run an 720p or 1020p (yeah right sony) natively, which, relatively speaking, not many consumers have the ability to run yet. Nintendo will be able to hold its own in the graphics department more than people believe unless you have an HDTV
- anerdsnetpostin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13They say the i's represent the controllers (and/or people playing the system). However, they've said nothing about any possible meaning behind the "W". Perhaps if they did it could spoil some news at E3. This is an interesting theory, not exactly virtual reality, but still going with why they haven't shown game footage: http://www.digg.com/gaming/Explanation_for_the_Nintendo_Wii_
- lame_duck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Just because there is a screenshot, doesn't make it on tv. Anyway, if the insider is right, it will not have a visor or helmet. If you would of read the RTA.
- kkaabboomm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13zediker:
no, just, no. the april 20th thing was complete and utter *****. nothing happened then, no flood of info, nothing. stuff has been slowly trickling out, Red Steel before the 20th, and stuff afterwards, as E3 approaches. the April 20th thing was a horrible internet rumor that still apparently hasnt died - lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm not sure I see how that video translates into a Wii-type device. Don't get me wrong, it's amazing technology, but I don't know if that's the type of thing Nintendo will be unveiling. But it does open the mind up for some cool possibilities.
Either way, I am stoked to see what Nintendo unveils. I think they've wrapped their head around the real problem with traditional gaming consoles nowadays. I'm quite excited to see what solutions they'll present... and E3's coming up quickly! - afex, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14agreed, there are only so many times you can play a US soldier or marine. At this point, who cares if the 360 has f'ing photo quality WWII games, i'd rather play something with creative and different gameplay.
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I fully expect Nintendo to win this generation in the console wars
No one is really "ooohed and awed" at graphics anymore.... we are desensitized by overdone hollywood blockbuster films and some already great looking games.
Lets be honest here, the main point that is lacking today is innovation. The only games innovating so far today are PC games which are in the massive multiplayer market.. such as WoW, EQ2 and GW.. perhaps maybe CS as well.
These games are innovative, in their own way. But to create an innovative console and an entirely new way to game... at an inexpensive price point.. they have a huge hit here. - nokkloom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I've never owned a console in my life. But if I'd get THAT for $200, I'd most certainly by one!
- kramit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9virtual boy maybe,
but what about if it was, and they got it right this time?
i only see one flaw in the plan, im going to end up trashing everything in my living room when im playing games.
but it is soooo worth the sacrifice if it was possible - smergs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10That was a cool vid. Didn't have sound on though. If that is actually used for Wii there is no doubt I will be buying one of those.
- nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Quite true.
Unfortunately we've already seen the screenshots of Red Steel, so this system may still be confined to the television. - thedigimonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I like Nintendo. I'm excited for Reverwi or what have you. But I've got to burst the bubble on this one.
I did a project on Augmented Reality for a class earlier this year. It's used currently for some medical applications and by the government, and one of the universities in England did an implementation. It's expensive, and it takes pretty massive processing power to calculate the environment/input versus the output/angles and positions of the "virtual" objects to be placed in real time. Doing this on any gameworthy scale is simply not technically possible with the power the Revolution has to offer. (Or possibly even what's in your computer workstation right now.) - tonyhartfield, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8remember this? http://www.n-sider.com/articleview.php?articleid=468 there was a video somewhere too but I can't find it
- GrundlTerror, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I dunno, I think if you put a non-gamer in a sword fight where he could actually see the person he was swordfighting against that would be a lot easier than "now hold L to block and tap Y to do a quick attack or hold it to do a sweeping attack and if you hit down L3 you can crouch."
- mjc2928, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8All the skepticism! This could very well be what Nintendo is intending to do, they have the controller for it. And how expensive could it be to do? All that is required, beyond a well built console system, is a $20 camera and some well written software. I haven't been keeping up with the Wii at all, but I will definitely be keeping my eyes out for any more information.
+Digg - saftaplan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10You mean like you're giggling every time you use the word "we", right?
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10hey... adult games on the Wii *wink wink*
LoL - Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Really? So, you're apparently privy to some inside knowledge that the rest of us aren't. Show us why the technology isn't "near that stage."
Otherwise, you are speaking from total ignorance. - StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8TomtheWombat:
In the video, the only interaction between the guy and the environment was via the little device in his hand - which is curiously similar to the revolution controller. Running around stomping on enemies? not so much. Lightsaber battles? Definitely. - TheGalacticFork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Because they know that they'd be wrong and get dugg down about 14,000 times.
- bouche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think this is a very interesting angle to follow.
- TheGalacticFork, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Just to balance it out a bit:

http://djcostello.free.fr/e3/PS3/ps3-funny1.jpg - TheGalacticFork, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7That just shows that people are excited about it. The Wii announcement has really fanned the flames of hype for the Wii/Revolution and people are really freaking out about what the big announcements for E3 will be.
- abaybas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I don't think many people actually understood what they were demonstrating in the video.
The virtual models are not in the room with you, but they are overlayed on a video of the room.
So how you would play is, you empty the top of your desk, then you look at the TV. On the TV there are virtual characters, or cars, etc on your table; and you can interact with these guys using the motion sensing controller.
It's practically like watching yourself in the mirror and there's stuff in the mirror (say little men running around) that you can't see in real life, and you can cut the little men in half using your virtual sword.(though the mirror would be the TV in this case.)
It's pretty awesome. - voodooatl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I thiink calling it a lightgun is a oversimplification to say the least
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5in a interview, some NOA guy was asked about the nunchuck motion sensor/if it was the big secret, and he said something along the lines of: if thats all youre expecting prepare to get an erection
- Migdilio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Imagine playing a Star Wars title on the Wii where you are actually holding the light saber in your hand and using the nunchuck to move around."
With that in mind, this Digg article just got a LOT cooler: http://digg.com/gaming/Star_Wars_lightsabre_fight_with_the_Revolution_controller
I keep telling myself: "This is not possible, this is not possible." But I REALLY want it to be. - SilentBobSC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5http://www.missouri.edu/~bah347/gprime/nintendoon.wmv ?
- saftaplan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If Nintendo co-operated with a company to create a revolutionary new way of gaming, and if this is their important "final secret", I think Nintendo has taken its precautions (at least I hope so). I think Nintendo just wouldn't allow that company to demonstrate their technology within quite a large period before the release of the Wii.
I also hope that Nintendo would have been so smart that if "nthngsshcking" really is right about this secret, and this secret is so important, they would have left out the "Mushroom Kingdom" hint on their invitations. Nobody likes a spoiled surprise. - Dahip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5So we've seen Red Steel on a TV...who's to say that there can't also be a VR angle to it too? That's like saying you can't have more than 1 audio & video output on a vid card, DVD player, etc...
- liquidoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6.....hello, ps2 eyetoy kinda sorta did it, why wouldn't the Revolution be able to take this concept and make it 100x better?
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I, personally, am unimpressed. Where's the next big leap? From ataris to 8-bit, it was full color screens, and recognizeable sprites. From 8-16bit, it was faster, deeper, more robust gaming, with continuation and saving. From 16-32 (psx, etc.) it was 2d-3d. These sorts of leaps have since dropped substantially since the PS2 era. I think all that the dvd systems brought was more expansive gameplay (making games like GTA possible), with real innovations in load times and steps toward online play.
All this new generation seems to be doing is expanding on graphics capability. Otherwise, games are generally exactly the same games as we've seen the past 6 years, but just prettier. And, imho, I don't think Oblivion looks all that amazing. There's real issues in the character models, the voice acting is fairly shoddy in some parts, and terrain, at a distance, looks like "pea soup." - TheGalacticFork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I said it before: Floor Vision.
