"Nintendo President Satoru Iwata today announced Nintendo DS Lite, a slimmer version of the best-selling Nintendo DS™. Also featuring brighter screens, Nintendo DS Lite will launch in Japan in March. Nintendo DS Lite will be less than two-thirds the size of the original Nintendo DS and more than 20 percent lighter.
Nintendo DS has enjoyed extremely strong sales in Japan and around the world, selling more than 14.4 million units worldwide. The Japanese sell-through of the existing Nintendo DS hardware exceeded 5 million within 13 months, which made Nintendo DS the fastest-selling video game system there.
Nintendo will announce more information about the availability of Nintendo DS Lite in North America and other territories in the future." - wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's like a nano and a DS made sweet sweet luv.
- Daikun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thank god they released a lite version. I've been trying to watch my calorie intake.
- wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Higher rez photos :
http://www.dsfanboy.com/2006/01/26/nintendo-announces-ds-lite-update-3/ - Milamber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They didn't say that they were not going to release a new one, just that they hadn't made any announcements. Nintendo like keeping secrets and were probably pissed off by Lik Sang so delayed the announcement for a while.
- euth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't wait to trade my old DS in for the new one. Here's IGN's story on the redesign:
http://ds.ign.com/articles/683/683684p1.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does everyone here remember last week when nintendo said they WERE NOT going to release a redesigned DS? I knew they were *****.
- Husky217, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks great! I already own a DS and like the current design, but I'll consider getting a DS Lite if it's more comfortable.
- derrickkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it looks great. And all you guys pissed at Nintendo for not releasing this at lauch, well you're idiots. Who cares if you just bought one, it's not going to be out for months yet. Cheap *****
- quamb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"It's a good thing nintendapple yuppies have more money than brains. Great business model, profit from people's vanity. I expect another release this year too, in typical nintendo style."
OR...
company. has a product. success. improves the product. more success.
anything wrong with that? didn't think so. fat cat companies like nintendo don't get rich by sitting on their ass. - Johnkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From what I read
-Super-thin apparently, less weight. (275 grams becomes 218)
-Can adjust brightness (4 levels of brightness control, can go even brighter than the original DS) - Mr.Ortiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My take on some of the issues being discussed here:
1. Comfort: My biggest complaint about the current (old) design is the position of the D-pad and action buttons. They're too low. The redesign moves them up and takes some weight off the top screen, making it much easier to hold for long periods.
2. GBA slot: Is there any official word on this, or are we just assuming it will be there? Nobody really cares about the rumble-pak, and taking it out would help sell GBA Micros. What DS game requires a GBA slot? I hope it's there, but I'm not celebrating until I see a photo that shows it.
3. Analog controller: Whether or not it's necessary (I don't think it is), it wouldn't be a system redesign, it would be a whole new system. This isn't a console where owners of the old model can just buy a new controller. It'll happen when the cartridge form factor changes. - smoreorless, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1
Nintendo DS Lite Accessories - http://astore.amazon.com/nintendo-ds-lite-accessories-20 - howie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"When you stop touching yourself at night!"
Why should he stop touching himself at night? It feels good!
Of course, someone like you might like pain and anguish, and in that case, I recommend the PSP for maximum frustration. - wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The cool thing about the DS is that it is country agnostic. You can import the Japanese version of the console, and it will e the same as the US one. DS games are universal, not region coded, and the power isn't an issue either.
- JigsawFalcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1zOmg, I can't wait to trade in my current DS for this new one!
- afwjam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a GBA slot, I am also in Japan so yes!!! I get one first!
Andrew - kapkorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hah that figures I JUST bought a DS yesterday.
- Mr.Ortiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One more thing...
4. Multimedia capability: There are rumors of a built-in media center according to at least one poster at 4cr. If that turns out to be false, there's still the PlayYan, assuming the GBA slot is still there. - moofman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone seen any actual photos yet, not mockups?
- DJNewStyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0uh.. doesn't look much different to me.
- modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope these get released in North America not too long after Japan. I've been waiting to send in my DS that has numerous stuck pixels until they came out with a new model in hopes I would get the new one as a replacement.
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But does is break compatibility with homebrew?
I've been thinking about buying a DS, so this might be what I need to convince me to buy one. I spend two hours a day commuting to school, with about 60-90 of that on a bus. However, I already have a Game Boy SP and an iPod Video, so I'm not sure I need another gadget. I already have trouble playing new GBA games and keeping up with my podcasts :P - natemiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The 1up story says that the GBA slot is still intact.
- saji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0comment I haven't seen anywhere, from the Japanese press release:
- Brighter LCD light
- Lighter weight
equals "DS LITE" - diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they could release 10 new ones tomorrow and it would be just as useless as this one. money machine keeps on going, just like ipods.
- SlappyMc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn, thats so much better.
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im not mad remember how happy you were with the gba and then the gbasp came out and you thought hmm should i buy this and when you finnaly said heck why not how many hours did you spend playing that thing and loving it. the same will go with this i hope they are both great systems i will by both and love them both and pour mannnnny hours in to both
- TubaFrog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Am I the only one pissed off at Nintendo because they've screwed over their customers yet again? They did this with the GBA. Release an ugly as crap version of it (probably on purpose) and let everyone buy it. Then release a good-looking version and everyone buys that one too. It's getting ridiculous."
Tell me about it; I bought a '99 Civic and stupid Honda has released *7* newer versions since then!! Those cheating bastards! - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fantastic news. I'm buying 2 of them when I am in Japan in May. Now, should I sell my PSP now... hmmmm.... I think the DS will be winning this handheld console war. I do like the PSP but it's not realising it's potential at all.
- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0depending on the price of the DS lite, i'd consider gettin one.
- LazyBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet ass i cant wait to get my hands on this beauty.
- ThisGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if I really should have bought that GameBoy Micro....
- WolfwoodX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally!!!!!!
- jonesey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just bought a DS a couple of weeks ago and I love it. I bought it half for the games, and half because of the amazing homebrew projects for it that have been popping up of late. Built in wireless, touch screen, GBA and DS slots. What's not to like?
- eigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** believeable. just last night i LITERALLY ordered one from amazon.com. *****, i need to sell that or try to cancel the order. dammit!!!
- greg544, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am not sure I want the DS much smaller. I have a hard time controlling Mario Kart as it is because of the small buttons and after an extended time it makes my fingers hurt. I realize that the purpose is to be portable and not comfort but at some point you reach a point where it changes the game experience. Mario Kart DD was much easier to play for me because of the full size controler.
- cryptor6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks pretty cool. Smaller is always better, the current GBASP model is great for traveling. Though I love my DS, it is slightly too big (as is the PSP) for traveling easy. I will definitely upgrade to the light version if it is smaller.

Agreed. While I do think the current DS could do with a redesign, the lite just looks uncomfortable to me. Maybe it's just because I have big hands, I don't know. Personally I could do with larger buttons, and a bit more contour... - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm buying.

I'm sorry, but that's just an ignorant statement. They have a wildly successful product. They are improving it, making it even better. It will then be even more successful. It's called BUSINESS. And they're making a lot of money from making great products. I'm guessing you're just a jealous PSP owner.... I'm sorry. - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0TECHNOLOGY MARCHES ON!
It was probably not possible to make the DS any smaller at launch with a reasonable cost. Since the release of the original DS, they likely were able to design a few ICs that combine much of the functionality of multiple original ICs. In other words, do the same thing with less chips to reduce cost (and size). This and other things also reduce power usage, allowing the same runtime with smaller batteries. Newer battery technology also allows slightly smaller batteries with similar runtime.
It all comes down to cost, though. The original DS could have been even smaller than this when it shipped, implementing virtually all functionality on one IC. But it would have cost a small fortune.
The big deal about this is that the DS was large, and this unit is much less large. It is an improvement without a doubt. - CUBApete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's awesome, but there better be a trade-in program of some kind...
- TheGalacticFork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Slick, slick to the max, now, make it in black -- I'm sick of Apple-White
- nPlastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, looks like my wife finally gets a Nintendo DS. My old one. Now if I can only convince her to start playing Animal Crossing and Mario Kart ...

Yes, I was mad about that but this time I didn't buy a DS when it came out. From past experiences, I knew to wait until the price drops and/or they released a better device. - ehmjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pretty.
i like white. - edrift101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was waiting for the redesign - I'll pick one of these up.
