- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28The DS has decent homebrew, but the PSP has a far better homebrew scene... of course, on the other hand.... the PSP has no CHOICE but to have a good homebrew scene or otherwise there would be -0- reason to own one... the games kinda suck.
*goes back to playing sf2 in mame* - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17This article's content (the article is new, but the guy is only talking about products he owns) is out-dated. a few products have been released that are much cheaper than those described in the article and are better in almost every aspect. If you're interested in this stuff, check out the R4 Revolution, its a slot 1 card (can't play GBA games) for 40 bucks, get that with an A-Data 1 GB MicroSD card for $15 on Newegg (yeah, only $15 for a 1GB Microsd, its amazing), and you'll be set.
Do NOT buy a DS-X. The dev team is lazy, it only has internal 512 MB of storage, and costs 120 ***** dollars in comparison to the R4 or the M3 simply's cost of $40 and $50. Plus with those you only have to pay like 15 bucks for a whole 1GB microSD card.
I highly suggest, if you're interested in this, listening to the 'Homebrewcast' podcast.
http://homebrewcast.com/nds/
Listen to their last hardware roundup, these guys actually involved with the Homebrew scene and they even get to test the DS flashcarts before they're officially released. - nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Not all M3s are slot 1, just the M3 Simply.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is actually why I'm stuck between the PSP and the DS
PSP has better homebrew........
The DS has better games.... - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sadly, it can't. The only solid emulator (meaning it supports nearly all ROMS for the system) is nesDS. There's a few OK SNES emulators, and then that's pretty much it. There are other emulators but they only work well with a few select ROMS and can be quite complicated.
Oh and it doesn't need to 'emulate' GBA games if you buy a Slot-2 flashcart, it just plays it through the hardware like a regular GBA game. - notbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4All you need is the M3 Simply DS M3
I just picked one up last week.
Make sure you get 1gig MicroSD cards, 512mb ones fill up quick.

http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=content&itemid=243 - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'm sorry, but anybody who buys a DS-X for $120 with 512 internal MB storage is an idiot, when there are far better options like the R4 or M3 simply which only cost around $45, (and a $20 1GB MicroSD card). You basically cut the cost in half, doubled the homebrew support (homebrew doesn't work well on the DS-X), and doubled your storage space.
- iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was hoping for a chance to ask this: If I want to run homebrew, not roms, specifically DSOrganize and some other random stuff like SNES emus, IRC/AIM, is a slot1 device or a slot2 better? I heard before that slot2 had better compatibility with roms, but now I think there are ways to patch homebrew for use with slot1 devices?
- Portezbie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i have an ezflash IV and love it, simple to use and works very well, although admittedly i wish it had fat support.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He forgot supercard DS-one,
similar to other supercard, cept it doesnt require any passme and goes in slot one - reckless8594, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Yeah, like if you're using the Supercard or the M3."
I've never understood why people say this. Every game I've played with single card download works great on my Supercard, and I have never had trouble with the Nintendo WiFi connection.
I don't really know about the M3 though, as I have never used one. - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3He's actually returned from exile (with 3 new updates for DS:O) specifically BECAUSE of DLDI patching. So in answer to your question, yes.
- iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Will I be able to run DSOrganize with dldi patching, since the dev like disappeared in a hissy fit or something?
- kinesis8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ annihilator675
No it doesn't - spiffyfitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I picked up a DS-X a couple weeks ago. It works flawlessly with every homebrew I throw at it. I know I overpaid for it, but I bought it because I don't need to patch anything and there's no software required for any major OS. The multicolored LEDs are an eyecatcher and it's ridiculously easy to use. I can't wait for the Okiwi browser to be released!
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ annihilator675
I actually own an M3 (lite version) and while it says that on their website and on the packaging, its an outright lie. Trust me, I love my M3, but the only actual good emulator available is the nesDS. There are some other SNES emulators being developed right now, but they're not good yet. DONT buy ANY DS flashcart in hopes that you'll have as good emulators as you can get on the PSP. Its sadly just not possible, yet. - kinesis8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ shadus
I agree what your overall idea. If anything Sony should be thanking the homebrew community (heh) because right now it's the biggest thing that is keeping their PSP sales going.
It boggles my mind that Sony still hasn't released Gran Turismo for the PSP yet... - hobbsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I bought a R4 card this week, so I'm glad to see it get a few mentions in this comment thread. Now just waiting to receive it :)
- Nocturnal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't wait to jump in on this. If only I could find the DS Lite for myself. I've been searching everyday pretty much for the past two months (since after Christmas). I'm hoping it will be more readily available soon.
- aussierobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I own a DS with G6 lite card for wardriving and linux. Works great.
For Emu stuff I bought a GPH GP2X - It does all the Emu stuff you mentioned (SNES is a little slow on some games but entirely usable) + many more - I can't live without my C64 :D - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I concur, the author of this article acts like the DS-X is somehow the only decent Slot-1 on the market, when in reality it is probably the worst and most overpriced. You can't even get more storage space in the future.
Right now the 3 best options for Slot-1 flashcarts (meaning you can't play GBA games) are the R4 revolution, the Supercard DS(one), and the M3 Simply. Also, there isn't any specific card thats truly better with homebrew now because of a new thing called DLDI patching. All the homebrew developers are now jumping on the DLDI bandwagon, which allows for their programs to be patched to run on any mainstream flashcart. It's great! Now is the best time to get involved with this scene, because the hardware is finally affordable and the homebrew development is finally getting somewhat organized. - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They're both fine. However, Slot-2's are more expensive because they support playing GBA roms as well as NDS roms. If you don't care about backup playing at ALL, get a Slot-1. They're cheaper and have just as good homebrew support, especially with DLDI patching.
Also, listen to the homebrewcast:
http://homebrewcast.com/nds/ - kiwiboyus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I picked up a Superkey and Supercard SD last week and just strated getting into this it's great.
- StickWST, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This isnt a new thing, but its why I bought my DS lite.
bamboogaming.com has some good deals, I got my supercard/key there. - wastedyeti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think I'm going to get the R4. This NDS homebrew stuff is exiting! Is there a current homebrew internet browser out for the NDS?
- nintendomaniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also, one reason against a slot 1 card is that you won't get the extra 32MB of RAM that some slot-2 cards have. (like M3 perfect and Supercard)
The extra RAM isn't always needed but some things do and/or get better performance. DSLinux's retawq never crashes with the extra RAM, and a future Quake II port someone is going to try will definitly need it. - iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks, all I've done is some random googling to find out stuff. I guess sometime soon I'll get an SCDS1 or something and a 1gb microSD card. Thank you diggers!
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -2/+3If you don't care about GBA support, just buy a Supercard DSone or another one of the new cards that ONLY uses slot 1. Much easier and cheaper, and try to get one that uses external storage (usually microSD cards).
Just get your microSD card, slap on your ROMS/homebrew, and boot 'er up in your Supercard (or whichever you get). You don't even need to convert the files first. - iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks, also, where can I buy a device for cheap? I guess supercardstore.com or something is a good place, but I'm not sure. I think I might want GBA support though, since I never had a GBA.
- kinesis8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have the M3 Lite and it does NOT have any built in emulators.
I was surprised by Ignignokt01's comment about them lying on their website so I had to go check it out myself. It turns out all they say is, "Support running emulator games. (GB, SMS, PCE, NES etc.)"
It may or may not be true, I just haven't bothered searching for them. However, given that those are all 8bit generation systems, it don't see why it wouldn't be feasible to emulate their games on the DS. - Mullinsmcd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My question would be how do these 1 Slot cart devices affect online features for games...err.... homebrew apps that might feature online functions?
- YJ2k2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1G6 can do all of them, except for the arcade ones.
- velvet396, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1currently awaiting the arrival of my R4... Wanted the M3 simply only because I'd heard of that first, but since the site i prefer to use can't keep it in stock, I went with the R4.
Thumbs up for being able to pack all the games I currently own into one cartridge! - Dood77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I second that. I'm currently testing the Quake 1 port and its coming along nicely. The same guy is doing Quake 2 after hes done with 1 and he's confirmed that it will NOT be possible with out the m3 or supercard slot-2 solution's extra ram.
- mrbass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Do NOT buy a DS-X. The dev team is lazy, it only has internal 512 MB of storage..." -Ignignokt01
I completely agree with Ignignokt01 what he says. Just get the M3 DS Simply and 1GB...or 2GB microSD from newegg. Only problem now is getting a Nintendo DS Lite they are sold out across the nation last month or so.
I put up 800+ cover shots of all game releases and also have my best nintendo games list I just did a couple days ago. I used to show how to firmware flash them but it's no longer necessary to do so.
http://mrbass.org/nintendoDS - reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just checked out the M3 Simply and HOLY CRAP it sounds awesome! It's much cheaper too!
Thanks thanks thanks thanks!
(I in no way condone pirating games) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love my Supercard Lite Micro, I'm getting a lot more use out of my DS now. I can run all roms fine, but I'm having trouble with emulation, SNES in particular. I just cannae' get SF2 to work dammit!
- aerogant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I find useful for this whole thing, is the convenience of carrying all my (legitimately owned/rented) games with me where ever I go, and not have to carry a bunch of cartridges around and swap them in and out when I want to play them, not only that but also a way of storing my saved games with out them being tied to a cartridge (useful especially for the rental games I play). I hope I am not the only person who uses the M3 legally!!! Funny enough though, I think trying to remain legitimate about my M3 usage, has caused me to spend more money on DS games then I normally would. If they could some how figure out a way of allowing homebrew and allowing people to carry their games around more conveniently while avoiding or reducing piracy, that would be awesome. But alas it seems to be an impossible problem to solve.
Also, for those thinking of getting a flash cart, get a fast SD card, it seems that some games need it, like Castlevania portrait of ruin, I have to play it via regular cartridge (but it's a great game, worth the hassle). - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Freekygeeky, no you don't need to patch the roms to use on a Supercard DS(one) or a M3 Simply. These are two brand new cards (came out AFTER the ds-x), and have all the functionality of the DS-X in terms of running ROMs. Stop spreading lies!
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Look at an M3 Simply, a Supercard DS-one, or an R4. They do the same thing and they only cost around $50. Yes, that's $70 LESS than the DS-X. I'm trying to save you money man, and people keep digging me down. The DS-X is a ripoff. Its a good product, but the other ones can do the same thing!
- Dood77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Does the PSP some how have a touchscreen availible for homebrew? I think not. Of course if someone just wants emulators and other piracy and doesnt care about great original games or other software making use of the touch screen then they can get the psp.
- kevinmoore, on 06/13/2009, -1/+1Inignokt01,
Don't forget that you have to patch your ROMs using the Supercard DS and the M3 Simply. The DS-X uses clean ROMs.
"Download play (meaning another un-modified DS can download your game demo) works most of the time with slot-1 devices, but there are a few exceptions"
Yeah, like if you're using the Supercard or the M3. The R4 and the DS-X have great download play support. - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm sorry to say, but you did get ripped off. Everything but the flashing lights is also done by the other carts like the Supercard DS1, the M3 Simply and R4. All Slot-1 devices do not require the roms to be patched. :/
A few months ago when the DS-X came out, they knew they could charge such a high price because they were the only Slot-1 card on the market, but now with the 3 other ones I mentioned, they can't get away with charging that ridiculous price anymore. - TripinVA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1M3 (not the simply kind):
GBA? Yes.
GB? Yes.
GBC? If you screw around with Goomba Color for a few hours, yes. (Though Pokemon Crystal is useless)
NES? Haven't tried nesDS, but I've heard a lot of good things.
SNES? SNEmulDS works great for most games I've tried (Sim City 2000 not included in that)
I haven't tried any of the others. - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1When I said 'outright lie', I was referring specifically to the packaging of my M3 Lite. It said on the back of the box something like 'buit-in emulators', and then it ran down that long list of consoles. I'm not sure if they still have that statement on their website but I remember them saying it on there in the past. However, while this may be a cheap trick to get more buyers, the M3 is a solid product. From what I've read about the M3 Simply (their new slot-1 device), that too is a good product. But I'd get the R4 before the M3, for a few reasons. Not to mention its the same EXACT hardware (its just the factory that makes the M3 Simply's hardware selling it rather than the M3 team, I know... mind-blowing)
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah because that's SO much easier and safer than just using a Slot-1 device and avoiding flashing altogether.
- mmbnmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If someone is new to the Home brew NDS scene, what is the best recommended device for slot-1. I'm having trouble deciding between M3 Simply, R4, and Supercard. Please inform me if there is a difference in product capabilities besides price.
- kinesis8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1M3 is the best. I've had the M3 Lite/Pass Card combo for about 6 months and they've released 2 separate flash updates over that period of time. Highest compatibility out of all the homebrew solutions out there.
M3 Simply is their newest homebrew solution and is the easiest one with expandable MicroSD storage (you want that) but you're SOL for playing GBA backups.
- N1XUK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I picked up the M3 CF version, its a slot-2 device requiring a passme! My main reason for purchase was due to the number of GBA games i still enjoy playing. Not to mention my DSphat is now my home console and my Micro for when im out and about....
- Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm a bit puzzled here. Why not keep your DS for the obviously superior normal games and get a (now fairly cheap) basic PSP for homebrew? You really can't beat it for the emulators it allows for.
