They're nowhere close to perfect, but just wait until you have children of your own... it provides at least SOME sort of control for the parent where they don't have to watch their kid play videogames/surf the net for hours on end. Also gives the kid their privacy.

Sort of Off topic but what the hell. I went to EB games this morning (~ 9:00 am) and, much to my surprise, I was able to reserve a wii in the number 10 posistion (out of 14)!!! According to the manager, the wii sold out of reserve spots faster then the PS3. I'm sure it's going to be accurate but the last thing you want is to struggle with changing channels or options when you've had a drink!

The designers likely designed the buttons to be large so that any player will be able to aim the cursor and click on it. In other words, you don't have to be a duck hunt master to get to the disc channel.

As a developer I saw them and cringed. Not very visually compelling. Kinda N64 looking.

Why would the system settings screens be white on black when the other screens are not? Even the DS system menu design is consistent with the load-up menu.

It's not like the Sony UI is any more complicated and thought out. I'm not saying it's bad looking, because personally, I like the PSP/PS3 interface, but it's not exactly complex. It's just as simple, if not more so. You need a large, plain-looking target to aim at, or else you'll miss it in a jumble of colors and animations.
So yes, the interface is ugly, but it's obviously designed first and foremost so that it's easy to navigate using the remote.
You want that wonderful motion-sensitive remote control?
