if you upgrade you loose its major functionality, emmulating systems other than the PSP - cokebottletuque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the real question is which offers more features. Sony is never going to support emulation on the psp so as long as home brew can keep up with the features of the official firmware with minimal delay home brew will always be better
- silverSurfer84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does 2.0 allow SNES emulation?
- BAKER, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Elranzer, Your comment had nothing to do with the link
Nice features but its not worth leaving 2.0 - Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RSS Feeding Media thoght my server and working perfectly
- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0err I didn't finish my thought cuz i was grabbing that stupid link.
"Have to say if I had one" that i would probably not update due to the main reason for owning one being games and videos. By games, I mean emulation (there aren't very good games out, lets face it with the exception of 3 I can think of). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know what, I'm upgrading. Because with Sony's attitude as of late I've pretty much stopped buying PSP related stuff and thus I could care less about homebrew now. Ok, Sony, you win, but only on this front. I'm not going to buy anything from Sony again.
I'm getting a PocketPC for my MAME needs. - mypape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was told that this update will block tivo tranfers when they release the mpeg transfers Q1 2006.
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this seems to be further proof that neither MS or Sony know how to sell a good system. Sony had a platform that would have benefitted from tremendous viral marketing to a prize demographic.
Specifically, the PSP attracts hackers and modders, who are willing to spend more money for the ability to tinker. But Sony, in the face of its primary market's express wishes, has done everything to take away what appeals to its users in the first-place.
Why lock down a system to prevent yourself from losing money that you wouldn't have receieved anyway? Sony loses nothing by people playing SNES ROMs on a PSP. On the other hand, Sony stand to attract customers to a potentially robust system.
Likewise, MS, if it plays its hand right with the 360, could attract alienated Sony users. By soft-pedaling DRM in favor of a hackable system, MS could make great strides in the console war. The Xbox was hackable, with only token prevention, laying the groundwork.
Ultimately, MS should not only learn from Sony's recent mistakes, but it should strive to capitalize on them. - atf487, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0psp needs some better games. and to be cheaper. 200 new and it'd be almost worth it.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Erm.. Do the games automatically update the firmware? I havn't bought a new PSP game in months because I havn't checked.
- Sharky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cool, but I'm staying with 1.5.
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Staying with 1.5... I'm one of the reasons Sony keeps upgrading. I have ALL current PSP games on my PC and load what I want to play onto my mem sticks when needed. I've even transferred my purchased UMD games (5 of them) onto my mem sticks, it's much easier on the battery and better to have 4-5 games on one stick then have to carry those stupid discs around.
With all the Black Friday deals out there, I got 3 1gig duo sticks for $19 after rebates. - Icabod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ya im staying with my 1.5. i like my homebrew to much :D
- darkinfero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think i stay with my 2.0 i happy with the web browser for now i wait till 2.0 gets crack i used to have 1.51 back in the day and i didn't know much about the psp back then
- drn666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"PSP has already lost to DS. Sony might want to try something akin to a $150 price with extras, not to mention bribe game developers to start working on better games for the system. "
Get off the glue for a bit. PSP has shipped 10 MILLION units:
http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000790064464/
Even if Nintendo has shipped more, Sony has still won in their own right. - jayf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now with LESS control over the media we overcharged you for!
But seriously, reading this link made me feel sick. Sony is not even offering a manifest for this firmware update. Have they not learned anything from the rootkit fiasco?
It's like pressing an mystery OK button without realizing that you are agreeing to hand over your liberties to a gestapo state. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hardly, forse. While it is subjective for me to give a contradicting opinion, consider these points: you can watch stuff in AVC, but with homebrew, you can watch whatever you want in any format you like. You can, too, play GTA on a 1.5, just use a version changer, and I believe the homebrew community made a browser for the system as well. As far as an "unsecure" setting, I have my wireless network set up to only allow certain MACs to access the network. I'm not sure it gets much more secure than that. If someone wanted to spoof my MAC, they'd have a tough time doing it, and if they just wanted to break in and steal a MAC from something wireless in my apartment, I think I'd have bigger problem on my hands.
- Dash-2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"RSS Feeding Media through my server and working perfectly" - Nick_Circosta
ditto to that! This rss and wma support rocks.. I cant wait until they allow streaming video.. that would be sick! - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow drn666, speaking of trolls... Do you make it a habit to knock down others' comments without making one of your own on the topic at hand? I know I'm not upgrading from 1.5. Aero Fighters is reason enough for me.
- vannoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I went ahead and upgraded, RSS support is nice.. And both games that are actually worth playing on the PSP (Lumines and GTA) I already bought.
Homebrew on the PSP is pretty lame right now anyway.. A talking clock and half correctly emulated systems are not really my idea of fun. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use mine mainly for wathing TV shows off bit torrent and movies I rip from MY OWN dvd's on the memory stick. I think it's stupid to buy UMD movies that you already own on DVD. (why someone would pay twice for a movie is beyond me!) I don't really care for homebrew as I don't play many games but it is awesome for the media it plays.
~mario - jesusfreak216, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11.5 for me...
ROMs ahoy! - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The RSS feeds are intriging...I had a 1.5, and then updated to 2.0 since a web browser sounded awesome. Now that I've got homebrew on 2.0, I am debating updating to 2.6.
- JaggedEdge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mmmm you smell that? a fesh 1.5 console never updated, or downgraded ^.^ i must say i do love my 1.5 and this 2.6... its a joke. the emulators are what makes my psp so valuable to me....along with the fact that it just owns the ***** out of a video iPod. thats why for christmas im gettn a 40gb 4th gen, last in stock for 3 hunda rather than a 30gb 5th gen video.
- MadFlyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0F1 2005 portable is pretty fun, burnout is nice too
But if only Sony could put a USB keyboard for sale for the PSP... and a mail client too...
The GP2x seems cool, but, it's missing a wireless card... - BrandonMills, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PSP has already lost to DS. Sony might want to try something akin to a $150 price with extras, not to mention bribe game developers to start working on better games for the system.
GTA and Katamari aren't enough to make me want a $200 handheld. - Incognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So does this mean they'll have games now?
You know "PLAYSTATION" - andy787, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know, I have nothing against people who want to use their systems as emulators/home brew boxes (whether it be PSP or Xbox or whatever, though honestly I don't see what is so incredibly appealing about it), but why do people who do it always seem to have to be such ***** about it? Is that really your rebellious, sticking-it-to-the-man outlet? :/
- OmegaOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll be sticking to 2.0 kthx. SNES emulation (F-Zero 1, FF1-6, Chronotrigger etc etc) is just too good a prize to give up. and with 2.0 I'm still able to watch movies and play all the games (i don't think the on disk auto updaters have passed version 2.0 yet).
until Sony can offer me a compelling reason to update, I'm going nowhere. either that or ill upgrade if kernel based homebrew is enabled on something like 2.5 or 2.6.
( - ronin9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could anyone here tell me what the usability of this site is.

So you obviously don't understand the console business ....
That said, Sony probably loses money on the PSP... same game MS plays with the XBox and Sony plays with the PS2. They make their money on games sold, each of which incurs a license fee paid to Sony. If you buy their hardware at a loss to them, then hack it to put homebrew on it, than you just cost Sony money.
Alternatively, Sony could sell, say, a $450 PSP with no DRM restrictions - but then people would bitch about how pricey it was.
As I said, this is the same deal with the PS2 - though apparently Sony now makes money on the PS2 hardware as it's so cheap now (old tech). That said - when was the last time Sony sued a chip manufacturer for the PS2? Not recently that I know of. Sony isn't retarded - they're a business trying to make money and right now, selling PS2's makes money, selling PSP's does not (unless you factor in the game sales). - serpentor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OmegaOne - How the heck are you playing F-Zero on SNES tyl .3c?? That game CRAWLS (as does any Mode7-heavy game). I wish it played better, it's one of favorite SNES titles. I'm thinking of getting a GBA just to play it on the road. What's your framerate?
- gherikill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm still waiting for GTA on 1.5, will not upgrade
- ronin9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On the PSP of course
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sorry, I think I'll keep my PSP un-broekn.

[Gir]Doom doom doom doomy doomy doom![/Gir] - MrBeanie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01.5 Here. I'll keep my emulators and Doom 2 thank you.
- lashanza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice, diggnation on my psp
- JubbaG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just upgraded and was disappointed. RSS only works with streaming podcasts. I was hoping for regular RSS feed support so I can liberate myself from my computer when checking my feeds.
- leachim_6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and rss channel doesent even let you view rss feeds it just streams podcasts so if you dont have an internet connection.... your outa luck
- leachim_6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0am I the only one who thinks its a little weird that you have to have an internet connection to play wma files isnt this maybe just a little bit weird Im thinkin conspiracy
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^ I tried diggnation but it doesn't work :(
- qubitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony is going to have to offer more features to get people to upgrade. Why would I trade my ability to run homebrew for wma/rss, especially when I can write programs to use them on my 1.0.
- EvilOtto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yaawwn.....wake me up when the big s comes up with some more enticing features. subpar web browsing, boring 3d shooters and sequels just don't do it for me. viva la 1.5
- OmegaOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@serpentor
I'm not using SNES tyl .3c, I'm using uo_Snes9x 0.02y32.
its at the bottom of the compatibility list for the bootloader http://gold.webfusion.co.uk/~fanjita/content/psp_working.html
with uo_snes9x you can 'overclock' the cpu, so i have the cpu at 266 and frameskip at 3. if you set the cpu to 333 (max) the battery is used *really* fast and the back gets kind of warm, so i just stick at 266 :) - ToxycMessiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@dclowd9901
MAC address filtering is probably the WORST way to secure WiFi. Even wep is way better. Hop over to grc.com and see what Steve Gibson has to say about....I bet you'll be just as surprised as I was to learn just how useless MAC filtering is. - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And that will sell more PSP's HOW?!
That's my point. PSP has a feature that people want. Then, Sony releases an "upgrade" taking away that feature. Face it, Sony has an iPod killer if only they'd give the people what they want.
Sony: the iPod-killer killer - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well, I'm downloading it.
Can't say too much mroe about it than that. - Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+02.6 works WONDERFULLY :)
