- TheWilder, on 05/27/2009, -7/+51Sony needs to stop creating bundles and just do a price drop already. If they don't announce one at E3, then at least Tokyo Game Show.
- Animan351, on 05/27/2009, -6/+30I would pay $400 if it could play my PS2 games as well. Untill they bring back the hardware in it to play ps2 games Sony can go blow me.
Especially since they advertised and hyped the console as being ps2 compatible and then very silently removed that feature screwing over many buyers who weren't aware that they got rid of it. - yoshi8710, on 05/27/2009, -5/+24Infamous is awesome. If I didn't already have a PS3, I would get one for this.
- ernasty10050, on 05/27/2009, -1/+15I never had a PS2. There's a library of 1000+ amazing games I've never played. Just like when I got my Xbox 360 and bought the Halo games, Max Paynes, GTAs, etc.
It really would be huge for sales, I believe. - pika2000, on 05/27/2009, -3/+15Today's PS3s actually have LESS features than the earlier models, so what I pointed out are merely putting the PS3 BACK to its original spec, with the only new features being the 802.11n and faster BD drive.
It would also be nice for Sony to throw in an HDMI cable for a $400 product that is touted to have HD capability. The composite cable is plain silly. - cloudyskies41, on 05/27/2009, -1/+12How about bundling with an extra controller, instead?
- pimpofpixels, on 05/27/2009, -6/+17The PS3 is still capable of about twice as many floating point operations per second as an i7. It's still got a lot of life left. A price drop or two could change the game completely.
- pika2000, on 05/27/2009, -7/+18-PS2 compatibility. C'mon Sony, you're selling PS2s for $99. I don't think it will add a significant cost putting back the PS2 chip into the PS3.
-4 USB port. I mean WTF was Sony thinking for removing 2 USB ports? What did that save them, 2 pennies?
-802.11n. Again, c'mon Sony, don't you want the PS3 to be the living-room media hub? 802.11n streaming makes perfect sense.
-Faster BD-drive.
Sony, stop playing with hard-drive sizes. You already make the PS3's hard-drive user upgradable using standard drives, so instead making different SKUs for different hard-drive size, focus on cutting price and attract more buyers. - ImmortalLegend, on 05/27/2009, -3/+12I'm really hoping for a price drop on the PS3. MAG looks awesome!
- Elranzer, on 05/27/2009, -3/+12And limited with its 256MB of RAM.
- MarkusDee, on 05/27/2009, -4/+11I loved the PS2, was excited for the PS3, but now that it is here - and has been here for quite awhile now - I still haven't gotten one. Sony didn't do something right if that can't even get someone who was so excited for their new machine to buy one. I'd say it has something to do with the price, the screwball backwards compatibility issue, and my lack of a HD TV. There just don't seem to be any incentives for someone like me to get one. As such, I have moved toward PC gaming and am happy with what I can get there.
- uberduger, on 05/27/2009, -0/+6@emjaymj: Try telling that to people who want more USB ports... :)
- Megadeth222, on 05/27/2009, -5/+11well i already own one, so this is irrelevant for me!
- DarkStar3333, on 05/27/2009, -1/+7I'm sure retailers are super happy about having yet another SKU sitting on the shelves and/or inventory. Why not just include a new game voucher with every PS3? Seems to be the simple way of achieving the same goal.
- Animan351, on 05/27/2009, -3/+8Especially on the RPG front. there's a MASSIVE amount of great rpg games on PS2 and virtually none on the PS3. I'm going through on my PS2 right now and playing the Kingdom Hearts RPG's. Dragon Quest 8 and Lunar:Silver Star Story are two of my favorites and there's dozens more I haven't had the chance to play yet. I hope eventually that the PS3 won't seem like a crappy system, but by then I'll be probably be checking into a PS4 or Xbox 720(note to Sony and $soft: Please change system names by now)
Also,Philbert. You're one of the people who wouldn't have noticed had you bought a later PS3 model and tried a ps2 game so here's the scoop. The first ps3's were full on backwards compatible using hardware(much better than software emulation) when Sony moved up to the model with 80gig drives they removed the hardware for the ps2/ps1 stuff and had software emulation for theminstead and they removed 2 usb ports. Then in the next model of ps3(and the current version you can buy) They removed the software emulation completely for the PS2 because it didn't work right with many of the games and they felt they could make more money by selling all the people wanting to play ps2 games another ps2 console for the $99.00 they are selling for now.So the current PS3 system can only play ps1 games as it stands right now using software emulation with problems running a small amount of them. - suprememilo, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4There was still some ps2 chip in the the last ps3s that did emulation, and I think they all still do ps1 emulation not 100% sure on that though.
- emjaymj, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4"Even my father who works in electronic (own a repair and installation shop since at least 16 years and before worked for another 4 at a store that his now closed ) looked at the picture on my plasma screen (from playing a BD movie in the PS3) and was unimpressed. He now has a Samsung player and the quality is visibly a lot better then what I have on my screen even if my father by hisself admits that my TV is better then his (Panasonic vs Samsung, both plasma)."
That's funny to hear because most high-def interest and review sites put the PS3 as being among the best of the BD players in terms of picture quality. But of course, I'll take your daddy's word for it. This was actually a huge factor in my decision to buy one, the other factor being that it was one of only a few players on the market (the others being a lot more expensive) that was capable of upgrading to profile 2.0.
And yes, my other console is a wii but I don't recall ever saying that I thought the PS3 was better. I've spent a lot more hours gaming on the wii, although the games have dried up the past while (and like I said, PC gaming is more my thing.) And really it's silly for me to label one system as better than the other because they both have a valid place in my home. - kosan, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4@bretkuhns The reason he was getting dugg down and the reason you should be is because you are both talking about the PS3 having pure software emulation of PS2 games. It doesn't and never did have this. It started out with pure hardware emulation, then went to part hardware part software, then it was dropped altogether.
They still do software emulation of PS1 games which is why they sell them on the PSN so your "hell, the PSP can handle software emulation of the PS1" comment has absolutely no baring on this discussion at all.
Go go ask google about any of this and it will take you 5 seconds to find a wealth of info. - Mike17102, on 05/27/2009, -5/+9But it wont.
As time goes by, the PS3 is falling more and more behind. Its losing momentum, not gaining it. - NeoTechni, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4"PS3 is just an horrible media center "
It's A horrible, not AN. AN is only to be used when the next word starts with a vowel sound.
And PS3 is the best media center out on the market - NeoTechni, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3You cant ask for more and a price drop at the same time, they conflict
- emjaymj, on 05/27/2009, -1/+4Fanboy? LOL I have 2 of the 3 current consoles, enjoy them both, and still I prefer PC gaming. My PS3 gets WAY more use as a media center than it does as a gaming machine, and it was extremely worth it.
As for the $1,000 computer, I'm thinking in Canadian prices, which would be about $800 American. That's really not too far off. It's certainly got a lot more power than a $300 PC WITHOUT media center capabilities and a BD drive. - bretkuhns, on 05/27/2009, -3/+6I don't know why you're getting dugg down. You're absolutely correct. The PS3 hardware is more than enough to perform software emulation of both PS2 and PS1 (hell, the PSP can handle software emulation of the PS1). After Sony started stripping hardware emulation support, they decided to release PS3 models that did pure software emulation of PS2 games (albeit there were graphical issues, these could easily be fixed over time with relatively minimal development costs). Then they dropped that all together and now there's no backwards compatibility on the current SKUs available. They claim it's all for price reduction, but that makes no sense. Sony invested time/money to create a software emulator, and it doesn't cost them to put a copy of it on new PS3s.
Regardless, if they want to be greedy about it, I've been saying for a long time that they should just release the PS2 emulator as a software download via the PS Store. Hell, I'd pay $20 if it meant I didn't have to dust off my PS2 just to play Gran Turismo 4. - NeoTechni, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3They removed it to drop the price at the request of those consumers. The PS2 hardware almost doubles their losses
- Macintoshreader, on 05/27/2009, -3/+5Crysis was made for X86 processors... no.
- NeoTechni, on 05/27/2009, -2/+42 pennies add up to millions of dollars quite fast.
By a $2 USB HUB and quit complaining.
You can't ask for MORE and a price drop at the same time.
The old PS3s had more and costed more because of it - decx, on 05/27/2009, -3/+5the market speaks, and the market doesnt want to pay more than 300 bucks for a videogameconsole... not too hard to understand
- jacksons98, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2Sounds like either you like to pay Microsoft or you have a problem on your network, check your port settings. All my PS3 games run smooth for me.
And PS3 still has the best online games, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and Warhawk all of which support more players and bigger maps than anything you will see people playing on that pay for service xbox. - stk198323, on 05/27/2009, -2/+4@emjaymj
There's a difference between hardware and software! On the hardware side of things the PS3 has a freaking lot less feature then the previous models, get over it for Christ sake, your defending Sony like your life is depending on them!
@pika2000
Even a freaking component cable would be nice, just anything that would play HD would be a good step in the right direction. I suggest a component cable since fanboys will of course complain that HDMI cable are too expensive (even if they sell them for 5$ now on monoprice). - TheCash, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2And if I was paid to run Fold@Home, that might mean something to me.
- TheCash, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2Exactly. A $399 PS3 bundled with a couple games I have no interest in playing whatsoever is still a $399 PS3, sorry Sony.
Hows bout you "add value" by dropping the price, and let me decide what games I want? I know consumer choice is a foreign concept to the king of proprietary, but you're gonna have to learn sometime. - kinseyincanada, on 05/27/2009, -0/+1canada.
- Philbert, on 05/27/2009, -6/+7It doesn't need hardware, mine uses software emulation and it plays both PS2 and PS1 games perfectly. They should at least make this something you can buy as an add-on from PSN or something.
- neelshiv, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1It is easy to say that the biggest exclusive titles are still on the way if you completely disregard every other "big exclusive" title that has already come out. There is no doubt that there are still big titles in the pipeline, but to call them the "biggest" is to disregard everything that has come out thus far.
I want to get a ps3, but I am going to wait until after E3 to consider it seriously. A part of me wants to buy an old one with ps2 backwards compatibility, and a part of me just wants to wait until it is remodeled or the price is dropped. - Philbert, on 05/27/2009, -0/+1I knew full well about the emulation when I bought mine, the 60GN models with PS2 hardware were still available at the time, but I took a risk with software so I could get the bigger HDD, turns out I got lucky, since it seems to make no difference. I also know full well that it is no longer available, which is why I suggested they should make it available.
- Shazbuckle, on 05/27/2009, -2/+3infamous demo ***** rocks
- jacksons98, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1Hardcore gamers are switching from 360 to PS3. Thats where the games are at
- MWeather, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1You are aware that PS3 has fee hosted servers while Xbox live you pay to host games on your own console, right?
- folsomfella, on 05/27/2009, -2/+3Another inFamous recommendation. Got it yesterday - damn is it fun. The controls are the best I've ever used in any game.
- DarthVolta, on 05/27/2009, -2/+3I got my 360 has a gift, but I'd definitely buy a PS3 if the price went down and if there were a few more exclusives, especially having just gotten a brand new TV.
As it stands though, I'm much more likely to just buy a new gaming PC. I've got all the console gaming I could ever want or need on my 360 - Halo 3 (with ODST coming out), COD4 and WaW (with MW2 coming out), Gears 2 (shut up), and L4D (which would probably be replaced by the PC version once I get one).
I hate all the Microsoft/Sony bitching. For me, it's just convenience, not some imagined, deap-seated hatred for everything Sony. - emjaymj, on 05/27/2009, -5/+6Hey, if he wants something with the performance of a $1,000 PC, a Blu-Ray player, AND a media center all for under $300, let the kid have his dream. Or better yet maybe he can go get a job.
- brokeswagen, on 05/27/2009, -0/+1I'm sure sony is still holding their balls to the price because of the Blu-ray function.
p.s I'm a 360 fanboy and I don't care to own a ps3 at any point BUT little big planet is the best stoner game of all time!! If you don't have it get on is ASAP - danwallace, on 05/27/2009, -0/+1The full game is even better.
- TheCash, on 05/27/2009, -0/+1In what alternate reality are you paying 280 bucks for a $249 product?
- emjaymj, on 05/27/2009, -2/+2@stk197323
You seem to get really angry about useless Digg posts, on a subject as inane as gaming consoles no less. I'm not defending anything, I was simply pointing something out. I believe the only things that have been stripped out hardware wise were the emotion engine (for BC) and 2 of the 4 USB ports, like uberduger mentioned - for which I have a question... do hubs not work? (I seriously don't know.)
Yes, I'm aware there's a difference between hardware and software, but the difference hardly matters. It's not what the feature is based in so much as whether or not it gives the user some new functionality - and on that note, there has undoubtedly been a net gain. A new PS3 with the stripped down hardware is still a lot better today than a "good" PS3 running launch firmware.
I kind of agree with the component cable thing (it's what I use), but I think that's a large reason they didn't choose to include either, because the users of each type of cable are split down the middle, it'd be arbitrary to include just one. The composite cable is definitely useless though, and potentially even a bit harmful in that people who aren't aware of the differences in cables are probably just going to end up using it...
Would I like to see backwards computability on my PS3? Sure, but I'm definitely not going to cry about it. Sony isn't perfect (in fact, I pretty much avoid them outside of gaming), but ALL the consoles have their weaknesses and things to nitpick about. If you don't think it justifies the cost, don't buy it. There's no need to whine about it and there's certainly no need to get hostile about it. - NoozeHound, on 05/27/2009, -1/+1Did you here me say "Yeah!" in an angry-mob-like way?
But then I thought, 'Narrgh, they leave that out so the stores can flog it as INFAMOUS BUNDLE + EXTRA CONTROLLER + FREE GAME - JUST £400 or whatever." - kinseyincanada, on 05/27/2009, -3/+3a price cut wont do a lot for the PS3, it will slightly increase sales but it wont make their position and better. If price was the answer than the $200 360 would be winning not the $280 Wii, its all about branding, everyone and their mom wants a Wii, and the 360 has garnered the hardcore market, and the PS3 is left behind in a niche market. Sony needs to work on advertising to really help them.
- Acqua206, on 05/27/2009, -4/+4Just how far do you think a dollar goes? I suppose you'd like a bespoke suit for $400 as well.
- ocharry, on 05/27/2009, -3/+3So we want more features AND less price? I think you're asking too much from Sony. They have a perfectly fine product that just needs its price to be a little lower.
