- navster15, on 12/11/2007, -2/+55This game is outstanding. This announcement pretty much guarantees a full trilogy is on the way. Hopefully EA won't ***** up the franchise.
- PooChunk, on 12/11/2007, -8/+52Mass Effect is the best game I've played since Metal Gear Solid. Period. Truly amazing.
- iucraigmc, on 12/11/2007, -0/+29Lets give Bioware a round of applaus for their track record of excellent games. Although this game has framerate issues, you have to give respect to a company so dedicated to a project (this is going to be a trilogy by the way) that they write an entire universe as a backdrop for the storyline.
Baldur's Gate I
Baldur's Gate II
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Neverwinter Nights
Jade Empire
Mass Effect
Their ability to immerse gamers in an intensive storyline that keeps you involved has always been the Bioware way, all the way back to Baldur's Gate 1. I am buying a 360 for Christmas just for this game... well, and Assassin's Creed (which I actually enjoyed the two hours I got to play) and Gears of War.
Oh and the performance issues are because Microsoft would not let them install the game on the hard drive (they are still majorly against the "Hard Drive Required" label. It's a shame... really. - petebot, on 12/11/2007, -2/+27You should make the time. Mass Effect is awesome. Be forewarned--the combat takes a little getting used to, so you will die a lot at the beginning, but once you get it and level up a bit the game is fantastic. I got this game and Dead Rising at the same time as my 360, and I've only played 30 minutes of Dead Rising as opposed to the 30+ hours with ME.
- LLamaStar, on 12/11/2007, -1/+25now they're going to hand their IP off to Obsidian for another ***** sequel.
- Crimsoneer, on 12/11/2007, -5/+26Now if they could just release it on PC...
- ryodoan, on 12/11/2007, -1/+21Hoping EA won't ***** up a franchise is like hoping water is not wet.
- JasonCox, on 12/11/2007, -1/+17Mass Effect: The reason I finally bought an Xbox 360
(It could have been you, GTA IV, but noo, you had to get delayed...) - KingGoonie, on 12/11/2007, -1/+16Ya see, and weren't people saying after first week sales that the sales were kinda poor... well 1 million in 3 weeks? I say its a success and will only be more so with 2 more weeks of holiday shopping (not to mention after holiday shopping via giftcards and cash presents)
This also leads me to again question what in the hell that "MGS4 MUST SELL 1 MILLION ON FIRST DAY TO PROFIT" nonsense was about... because I don't recall what the first week numbers for Mass Affect were, but pretty sure they were under 500k... meaning in the two weeks after words it pulled in another 500k, proof sales don't exactly trickle off after the first day or week. - shredswithpiks, on 12/11/2007, -0/+14wait a second. you couldn't play mass effect because you were busy playing a game that didn't live up to your expectations? for three weeks?
- koreth, on 12/11/2007, -0/+14Good game, and they deserve their success.
Hopefully the sequel will have a little less of the "drive around lifeless alien planets in a low-tech humvee, trying to find the right angle to inch your way up to the top of the hill so you can explore one of the universe's 5 billion identical underground bunkers" stuff, which I think is the game's weakest aspect by far.
But the storyline and the general gameplay mechanics aside from the driving stuff are all perfectly enjoyable. And the driving stuff really only becomes a chore if, like me, you are obsessive about chasing down every last side quest before proceeding with the main storyline; there's more variety in the main quests. - inactive, on 12/11/2007, -2/+15I postponed my Assassins Creed'ing to start Mass Effect, and haven't looked back =).
- Arkavus, on 12/11/2007, -1/+14How do you not know what a RPG is?
- InuX, on 12/11/2007, -3/+16If you haven't gotten this game yet, what are you waiting for? This game is truly magnificent.
- themonkman, on 12/11/2007, -0/+13I've never been sucked into a game like I have with Mass Effect. While there is a good RPG element to it, there is also plenty of FPS combat. There is an enormous amount, in fact. There are so many ways to wander away from the main plot as well with side missions and such. The dialogues between characters is great, however when you select a response it's not what your character says verbatim. This is good because it keeps you guessing what exactly your character will say, but it's annoying on occasions because the context of what you really say doesn't always coincide with the response you selected. I stuck to the main story plot (one or two small side missions) and it took about 24hrs of gameplay to beat it. The graphics are great, too. I would be willing to say it closely pushes the limit of what the 360 can handle, and you can see this in very minor and brief artifacts/re-rendering during some scenes like exiting out of elevators. There is also a pretty hot sex scene (almost R rated), too. This is a must have game for every 360 owner. I can't wait for the sequel to come out!
- 4orced4door, on 12/11/2007, -0/+12One million copies? That's a lot of time people are spending in elevators.
Who am I kidding, I'm 30 hours in. - spect3r, on 12/11/2007, -2/+13Go Bioware!!! Mass effect was great... one of the best games to date for the 360. Some slight performance problems, but the length and gameplay make up for that :)
- tolbs, on 12/11/2007, -0/+10Totally agree. To me this eclipses KOTOR as my favorite RPG and makes up for the fact that Bioware dumped Neverwinter Nights 2 development to Obsidian! Absolutely perfect on every level (w/e to the menu interface).
- Nobi-Wan, on 12/11/2007, -1/+10One tip (no spoiler):
Max out Charisma or Intimidate as much as you can as often as you can. It will pay off. - inactive, on 12/11/2007, -1/+10That was the biggest waste of mental reading ever. Thanks....for NOTHING!
- heartless_, on 12/11/2007, -0/+9Dumping NWN2 development to Obsidian was the worst thing they ever did, but what should we have expected after they dumped KotOR 2 to them as well? I hope Mass Effect 2 is not dumped as well. Obsidian are ***** franchise killers, but due to Biowares name on the originals, the games sell like hotcakes.
- peppermd, on 12/11/2007, -1/+9Mass Effect is one of those games where you wish you could remove your memory of playing it so you can play it again for the first time.
- wild, on 12/11/2007, -0/+8Why? I spoke my opinion (its kind of an average game with some bright spots) and I stated exactly why. I didn't say it sucks, and I didn't go after the obvious "technical flaws" issue that all th trolls go for.
I played and beat the game. I paid $60 for it. And I think its was ok. It was worth what I paid, but I am tempering the hype. Its like Jade Empire. It came out and it was the greatest game ever!!!!! And now people still go back to KOTOR to compare Mass Effect. Why? Because over time the mediocrity of JE has come through and we realize it wasn't as great as we all wanted it to be.
I am of the opinion that the same effect will happen with Mass ffect. Once the hype and dust clears, you'll have die-hards that always swear by it, but the general gamer will agree it was a good game that got a little overhyped. Same with the new Zelda, same with MGS2. - xxbrighteyed, on 12/12/2007, -0/+8you can't even get laid in a videogame
awwww - Nobi-Wan, on 12/11/2007, -0/+7I don't think it was ever cool.
- inactive, on 12/11/2007, -2/+9Great storyline, can't wait for 2 & 3.
- Topher06, on 12/11/2007, -6/+13Wait for it....everything else on the Xbox ends up on PC.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 12/11/2007, -1/+7You're getting dugg down but I agree. There wasn't a whole lot of variety in mass effect. It was a great game but I would have much rather seen KOTOR 3. The choices you made in the KOTOR series had a much wider effect on the game. Especially in KOTOR 2 where the choices you made could train your party members as Jedis which was awesome. I just didn't feel this was Bioware's best work.
- blaket, on 12/11/2007, -1/+7Erm, wouldn't the PS3 be the 'losing' system? Not trying to start a system war but aren't they the lowest selling next-gen console by a pretty big margin?
- DangerMouse9, on 12/11/2007, -1/+7So, if it doesn't sell 1 million copies on day 1, but sells a million by the end of week 3 it has failed? A million copies is a million copies. What if it sells a million copies on day one but doesn't sell any more copies for 6 months? Is it still a success?
- wild, on 12/11/2007, -11/+17Its not that great. Pretty, fun, and it has a great ending, but the overall game is relatively average. Repetitive, rehashes some of the same puzzles of KOTOR, and it feels more shallow. It also lacks much in the way character variety. I mean, you wear color variations of the same damn outfit the whole game. And questing for items never changes gameplay. Once you use the shotgun, you always use the shotgun, even when you find the really good ones. It made side quests pretty pointless. It neede dthe rare lightsaber colors, or the two handed blades, or addiiotnal biotics to attach to your character you could only find through exploration.
As it was, the gameplay never really evolved over the entire 45 hours+ I played through it. And your choices rarely had any real consequence, especially on the ending.
And then the story, totally predictable and cliche until the last 3 hours. Told through cheesy (although well acted) dialog.
Then you have the clunky item system. Equipping characters was a chore, and the 150 limit was a terrible decision because it forced me to scroll through their crappy menus. Also, the fact that I could equip items I would never use on characters was just confusing. Along with the way upgrade were handled installing into guns. And the shopping menu was a total cluster.
And of course there was the combat. I never got the feel for using biotics from my secondary characters. It always felt weird and took me out of the action. (I get that it is an RPG, and I loved KOTOR's level of hybrid, but don't try and play like an action game and an RPG.)
And lets talk about mapping drawing your weapons to two seperate buttons, instead of a toggle. The grenades could have been on B and the holster on X. Then the back button could be used for fast saving. (Which is necessary since the game starts out auto saving for you whenever danger strikes, and then just gets random. Don't train me to rely on your save system if I can't later on.)
All of those are big flaws for me, and none of them touch the technical stuff (which I could care less about as it never interrupted the game).
Worth playing? Definitely. Greatest game on Xbox? Not even the greatest game this year.
And of course, that is all my opinion. Beauty of a forum. We can all share. - KompressorV12, on 12/11/2007, -0/+5yeah you got it spot on, 1/3 of 360 owners have a broken 360, and it takes 2 months to get a 360 back with overnight shipping to and from the HQ... enjoy folding@home on your PS3 while i'm playing 5 GOTY contenders on my launch xbox 360 waiting for this supposed red ring of death to occur
- louiedog, on 12/11/2007, -0/+5You're either stupid or a liar. There's barely any combat in the first 3 hours. Unless you skipped the assignments you'd still be on the Citadel. And you traded it, after 3 hours? Way to take a loss, champ.
- tolbs, on 12/11/2007, -0/+5I was about to say "EA has nothing to do with this game," but after I did some googling I found out that EA acquired Bioware.
Way to make my heart sad EA! Bastards.... at least they couldn't get their paws on this game. - BrownBoognish, on 12/11/2007, -0/+5Who cares?
- kanchoassassin, on 12/11/2007, -0/+5Not sure why you're being dugg down. The bunkers ARE the same... entrance -> fight room -> 2 areas for possible treasure. The cavern's have a similar layout too.
- Christbait, on 12/11/2007, -2/+7Which doesn't rule out that it will go to a non-console format... i.e. the PC.
- heartless_, on 12/11/2007, -1/+6Truth.
- oldhick, on 12/11/2007, -0/+5Thanks for that waste of space. If your nephew wants it then let him get it. Its a lot like Halo when you're shooting. It has plenty of cut scenes, like Halo. It has a decent story like Halo. It simply has an upgrade system that Halo didn't have.
- petebot, on 12/11/2007, -0/+4I’ve seen pictures of other people’s “Shepards” and I find it amazing how different they all look from one another. That alone makes me want to play through it with a different character or 5.
- Nobi-Wan, on 12/11/2007, -3/+7MGS4 has a significantly higher production cost AND it's most likely not going to PC like Mass Effect inevitably will. MGS4 is "supposed" to be a PS3 exclusive so, yes, it will have to sell 1 million on day one in order to justify the exhorbitant production costs for the game on the ONE platform it's supposed to be on. If it doesn't meet those high expectations then Konami will have to probably look at other options to recoup their investment.
Konami is a business. They're not fanboys. - seand, on 12/11/2007, -0/+4You sir just tapped into every comment I have made about this game. While fun in spots, I felt that this too did not live up to its hype. Sad that this seems to be a recurring theme in games anymore. It was worth the cost of the game to me but not a game I would play through a second time.
- louiedog, on 12/11/2007, -0/+4And Halo 3 sold 4 million copies before it was even released. So what? We're talking about the success of Mass Effect.
- ats314, on 12/11/2007, -1/+5Sometimes ***** games make millions leading to more ***** games (50 cent bulletproof). Sometimes great games sell *****, leading to less great games (Psychonauts).
Always good when a great games sells well. - cplex, on 12/11/2007, -0/+4That 'diss' is about as old as 'yo momma' jokes. Troll.
- DangerMouse9, on 12/11/2007, -3/+7you fail at spelling.
And as an FYI, it stopped being cool 10 years ago to use a ph in place of an f. - iheartjebus, on 12/11/2007, -0/+4I completely agree with your comments. I can't believe how many people on here just sound like fanboys, proclaiming this game to be the best game ever and whatnot. It was a good game, but not excellent, and there were several titles released this year that were much better than this game. Also, I was annoyed that I had absolutely no incentive to use different weapons the entire game. My main character used pistols the entire time, and it was never a problem. The game never got difficult, I never had to think about how I was going to attack a group of enemies. The combat seemed to be the worst parts of RPG combat combined with the worst parts of FPS combat. If the story wasn't compelling, this game would be incredibly mediocre.
- jeremy1967, on 12/11/2007, -2/+6Talk to us when you grow more than 3.
- GUTTS, on 12/11/2007, -1/+5Seriously, take a moment to read your last statement. Okay now you want to compare BRAND NEW IP to Mario whos been around for how long? And Mass Effect still sold 300,000 in its first week. Nuff said.
- inactive, on 12/11/2007, -0/+4Microsoft's definition of exclusive is a little different than everyone else's. When it's an Xbox exclusive, you'll see it on the PC soon.
