kotaku.com — While we knew that Mass Effect was going to contain partial nudity, we were sadly lacking on details, but no longer. The British Board of Film Classification has revealed it's rating for Mass Effect, revealing in the process some revealing details about...well, revealing. According to the classification the game has been given a 12 rating

    Americans seem to have a really odd intolerance of sexual/nudity

The Puritans weren't so cruel as people make them out to be, even in AP US History classes. Actually, a lot of things in AP US History are inaccurate. This not only includes censorship of nudity, but also of violence and swearing. If you feel one thing should be censored and the other not (switched around depending on the continent apparently), then that's just two different sets of norms.

      If there is quality control of television then censorship becomes unnecessary.

      So no, you haven't got it right.

First, you have to recognize that you shouldn't rate how bad the act is but how much it affects the viewer. If you were rating how bad the act was, then a clip of Hitler signing a document authorizing an invasion of Poland would be worse than watching a room full of people get chopped up by a chainsaw.
      Once you recognize that, you look at the effects they have. Studies that attempt to link violent media to violent activity have generally shown very little connection. Pornography, on the other hand, has been shown to be incredibly addictive, and I've even read personal accounts from people who were able to break a cocain addiction but not a porn one. Furthermore, I've talked to rehab officers who work with sex offenders, and they say that of those who are truly trying to change, they almost all say that their problems started with pornography and escalated from there.

      So in fact, America does have it right. I'd welcome a discussion here, so if you disagree with me, write up a good response (an intellectual one, not name calling), instead of digging me down.

The female humanoid alien is undoubtably an Asari, which, according to the novel, are made up of only one gender who tend to look like human females. They would've had to write in a human male character to specifically play the gay lover role (I don't think humans and Turians would mix well, let alone a Krogan), which probably brought up too many branching storyline and design issues. But I understand where you're coming from, it does shorthand you guys.

      As a Brit, I'm more than a little annoyed when developers design games based around which ESRB rating they're shooting for. Sure, the occasional game is released in its "uncut" state in the EU, but games like GTA should feature a lot more sex and sexual humour than they contain. They don't, because an AO rating in the US is commercial suicide. Instead of releasing a much more explicit version over here, developers usually release the censored/edited version worldwide.

  • TrojanGuy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well people who read the prequel book will remember that the blue-skinned race is actually neither female nor male, so technically any human-on-blueskin action isn't really heterosexual nor homosexual. Of course they look female and the book says something about them being rumored to be "very skilled lovers" or something like that, so yeah, I think generally we're left to assume that humans THINK of them as female.

A tasteful love scene can dramatically enhance the overall quality of the game, it seems like most scifi movies nowadays include a sex scene anyway. At best it can offer a more cinematic experience, at worst it can be Mass Effect's hot coffee.
