- uttles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26"The game was Wii Tennis - but instead of using generic character models, the onscreen faces in this match were caricatures of Miyamoto, Iwata and Fils-Aime (the contest winner did not have a personalized character). At the time, it seemed like a visual in-joke for conference attendees, but Miyamoto said the Wii might be able to create those personalized visages for players and their family members.
He declined to go into specifics, but added "we have some different ideas about how to take advantage of that functionality – and we will be sharing that type of functionality with third parties.""
Wow... that would be really cool. Not reason enough, in itself, to buy a console of course, but still pretty damn cool.
PS - I'm buying a Wii ASAP. They had me at "Metroid" - joeplayer91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19This is going to be the best system in years, inovation, somthing we havent seen in games for a while.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16At this point I'm anticipating more software features than hardware... Even though the NOA rep said for hardcore gamers to keep their eyes open, to me the biggest most exciting features are in the software. Look:
1) The Virtual Console - Letting independent developers distribute their games on the Wii opens a whole new kind of gaming experience. Imagine the places Nintendo could take emulation - playing these games on the go with the DS, anyone? Entirely possible.
2) WiiConnect24 - The Wii is going to have a big focus on community connectivity. They really are making everything extendible. Nintendo registering WiiChannel.com and all of this talk of sharing, communicating, etc. is all very exciting.
3) The Opera Browser - So no matter what you're doing at the moment, you'll be able to press "Home" browse the internet. Awesome.
4) USB Hard Drive Support - Will the Wii include some media center functionality? Will it support or encourage homebrew with an SDK?
So many possibilities... - OwenX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13first of all, at that point the ps2 was 300 dollars. Now the wii is still 200, and the playstation 3 is 600. Plus, nintendo has excited many more people with console then they did with the gamecube, plus sony doesn't have a years head start this time.
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Nintendo keeps so many parts of Wii secret that just about anything could happen. I'm doubting anything major, but they sure know how to keep our attention on them as we wait for Wii to launch.
- Aanidaani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Nintendo is going to do well simply because it's cheap, it makes entertaining games, and everyone can play them. Yes it may not have as many "gritty" or realistic games as the XBox and PS3, but those systems are more expensive, and ultimately only a small hardcore elite will really adopt them.
- darthrsg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Only if the wackmart denziens dont shred the kiosk within 3 days.
- jgclark123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@Demagogue
I got my GameCube the January after it came out and it was only $200. I don't know where you were shopping...
(Note: U.S. resident) - navster15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@Demagogue
The GC launched at $200 US, which is the currency most people on Digg use by default. It did launch for $300 Canadian, which was a huge ripoff given the currency conversion. - LawLSUVA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I think that the hidden functionality with be either be a microphone built into the Wii-mote or possibly the mouse functionality for the Opera browser.
I think that any unrevealed features will be cool, but nothing too suprising.
The fact that speakers are onbaord the controllers is genius, and it should have be done ions ago. - trialofmiles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7TheBrandman said, "If the rumor is true that it's only going to clock in at 1.1Ghz then that would be some torpid surfing"
Are you saying 1.1GHz is not fast enough to surf the web? Processor speed has very little to do with being able to load and render a web page. Even with all the Ajax and Web 2.0 in the world, it's not exactly an intense operation. - dugbay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If someone walks into a store and Knows nothing about current video games, and they see Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo.
They will pick nintendo. - TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6A microphone would be so amazing in the Wii-Mote. I know it might look terrible but maybe you could even support some sort of "Wii-Phone" functionality. Or at least a sequel to that game where you talked to Pikachu.
- ianjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yes, that it just what the industry needed, something to generate interest and get people excited about gaming again.
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hold still while I uncomfortably drag this bar across your face... me thinks this wouldn't be the most optimum way of doing it.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm starting to get the feeling that we're being driven to Nintendo...almost as if there was someone high up in some Japanese hierarchy calling the shots:
"Okay, Sony's got to be really bad to make Nintendo look even better"
I had a similar feeling during the Nintendo-Sega struggle, but it seemed like more of a testing the waters to figure out what would really work for the "real" op. - tidu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, we'll be demo-ing the Wii with broken controllers and thumbstick-less nun-chucks...
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Tony hawk 3 or 4 had this feature in it. You could never get it to look just right though.
If nintendo could make this easier and have a better list of games that supported it thatd be nice. - Kazenodeku, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7You're forgetting that the gamecube was kind of a dud, so that's hardly comparable.
Also that the PS3's actual comparable "rival", the 360, can be bought WITH the Wii at roughly the same price as the PS3.
And that the Wii appeals to families and younger audiences with it's simplicity and friendliness, and to avid gamers with it's innovations.
EDIT: also come to think of it, since the PS2 was out far before the GC, I can imagine scenarios such as "Kid: I want a Gamecube! Parent: You already have a PS2." kinda thing. So that situation's even less comparable. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think the killer marketing for Nintendo will be having demo units in stores. I don't think non-gamers will be able to resist buying one when they see someone playing it for real.
- AcidPhysx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Could the bar that tracks the wii-mote be used to "scan" images?
- Argle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe it's something where you can use a simple interface (think: Spore) to create an avatar for each household member, and then that avatar can be used in lots of different games that support it, and via the network when playing on other people's systems.
- TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is unknown the reversal of knowing? It just means concealed or yet to be revealed. Move on.
- mbwilliamson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yes, a mic would be very cool. If you've played Brain Age for the DS, you'll understand why I'm thinking it would be cool.
- Frost35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If they have kiosks set up in Walmart and what not, then non-gamers will definitely have a better interest in purchasing it. But I would have to agree that its only about a 50% otherwise, because of the "It cost more is must be better" scenario.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It could,,hypothetically have a camera inside of it--but the wiimote is tracked using LEDs. Nintendo is pretty keen on the development of peripherals (by both them + game developers) so a camera wouldnt be so far fetched even if it doesnt come straight out of the box
- hankryan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love the idea of custom-modelled characters! It seems to me, though, that rather than building some fancy accessory, nintendo might just have some sort of doo-dad on their website that lets you send in pictures that you took yourself with one of the millions of digicams that now exist in the world. Then they would charge you a fee to have cheap foreign workers man some sort of mostly-automated conversion process which would yield 3D models which could plug into any game that supported them via the network connection. Without the human component i don't think they'd be able to produce even passably good-looking 3d models.
- z0zin, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10I'm really tired of people using the whole "Wii is cheap, everyone is gonna buy it!" GC came out at $200, and it was stilll outsold by PS2 1:4. Price obviously something to consider, but not everything, and not the sole reason to buy a console. Also, when someone who knows nothing of video games, walks in to a store to buy something, they know nothing of Wii, and it's capabilities, it's a 50% they will buy it because it's cheap, and the other half won't because it's $300 cheaper than the better known PS3, thus to them making it better.
- AcidPhysx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, I'm just looking at the advances with high intensity LED's, CCD technology and imaging in general. A camera in a cell phone? 8GB in a drive smaller than my finger? If anyone has the imagination, it's Nintendo.
- AcidPhysx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Definitions of unrevealed on the Web:
* undisclosed: not made known
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2> I don't think non-gamers will be able to resist buying one when they see someone playing it for real.
I highly doubt that. If someone is a non-gamer, they will simply look and laugh and go out to play their real life sports or whatever they normally do. - mzkw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ehm... No.
- csyberblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yea, that's what I was thinking too.
- InferiorWang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Yeah, we'll be demo-ing the Wii with broken controllers and thumbstick-less nun-chucks."
I can only imagine how long it will take before some kid tries swinging the the nun-chucks at the glass cases. Then we'll just be using the remote at all the stores. - NoxNoctisLancea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1when i saw what the PS3 controller was doing i immediately thought you know those people that shake and twist and turn their controller like idiots and you tell them its not doing anything that's what i thought. it immediately turned me off bit but then i saw the things the Wii-mote had and i was totally sold...that and i like metroid.
- joesmosax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm guessing there is a camera under that mysterious flap on the front of the console. It will be able to take pictures of the players and integrate their faces into the game.
- dunstdunst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://wii-wii.us
- dolson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I disagree. The GameCube didn't win any wars this past round, and it was perpetually cheaper than the competition.
Perhaps that's because the games are so expensive and stay expensive for longer. Look at SSBM or Sunshine, they're still over $40 here in Canada, and that's for used copies! Even cross-console games cost more on GameCube here. It is kinda crazy.
It is my favorite console right now though.. It just feels more polished and more fun. Nintendo Placebo? Perhaps. But perhaps not.
I think the Wii will sell not because of the price (that is a part of it though, for sure) but because it's hopefully very intuitive, has the nostalgia-filled Virtual Console, and has games that can't be experienced the same way anywhere else. At least that's why I'm getting one. - maxhrk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*call nazi-grammar assassins* Rest assured, they are on the way right now.
- scairborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1who the hell typed this story? serious english flaws...
- TrainwreckX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How far behind the times are you guys? There is a mic in the wii-mote, along with the speaker...
- Feanor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2While it may be in some dictionary somewhere, the word is illogical. How to you reverse reveal something?
- spazman5656, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2how is it possible to unreveal something? It's not even a word.
- karch, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Metabolife: hahahaha, no. and it doesn't even look very robust or fun itself.
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2"Creator of the game company's biggest franchises discusses Wii"
How did this idiot get a writing job? What a horrible, ungainly sentence... - Demagogue, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6GC came out at 300.... PS2 came out WAY before
or they might see a Wii on display and say "Oh wow that looks awesome! and its only x amount of money!" - TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1I don't know if you can hit home and jump to browsing "no matter what you're doing". If the rumor is true that it's only going to clock in at 1.1Ghz then that would be some torpid surfing; and even if it's not I don't expect it to be much higher.

Could this be the secret?
