- Daisuke, on 10/20/2007, -27/+157nooes! ignore this. please digg down. :)
- afex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+78its not really fake, he uses an emulator. as for the 1 square gaps, i believe there is a walljump glitch where he actually does sink a bit down but immediately gets out (also used on the double jump). this type of speed run is considered an art, and these people NEVER pass off these videos as real-time, original equipment completions of the game. its not about tricking people into thinking you actually did it, the skill is in learning how to exploit the game to its fullest and discovering the absolute quickest way to do things. (without modifying the rom)
- JeffT1545, on 10/12/2007, -1/+50I don't think that's correct. The flag still has to come all the way down the pole, regardless of where he hits it.
- Bara, on 10/12/2007, -7/+51Whoa... after watching the video and coming back here, everything is like... shifting to the right... It's wierd...
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -22/+61I will digg you up for the hell of it.
- Daisuke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41too bad he can't view his new quest.
- illegal_op, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34the lava doesnt kill you it is only there to look like you are falling in lava. It's just a standard hole, which if you catch it at a seam you can jump back out.
- nesagwa, on 10/12/2007, -12/+41The problem is that these guys play the game taking save states at regular intervals. So whent hey die or mess up they just keep restarting it from the last save state.
Its a really lame way to make speed run videos and doesnt really require anything but alot of wasted time and patience. - joelmole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Play New Super Mario Brothers on the DS. You won't be disappointed.
- Godel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Have you played New Super Mario Bros on the ds?
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22It's for running and for jumping farther.
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25@merreborn, and you, who brings up a good point, get modded down.
yep, makes sense. - ThndrShk2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18"enemies flicker sometimes"
Apparently you didn't play the NES.
NES hardware itself can only contain a certain amount of sprites, and in order to do it, the trick was for them to flash when too many got on the screen. Thus allowing sprites on the screen. Emulators can increase the limit themselves, or run at original hardware specs, thus making sprites do that. - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15It's what you should hold down the entire time, normally.
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15everything he's done in here is possible. I've done it all on the original hardware before. just not all at the same time. the only thing we can really claim is that he may have done save/restore at certain points because some of those tricks are easy to mess up. (like jumped onto the edge of a pit).
i've tried the "play without b button" thing on the real hardware years ago. I didn't do it in the amount of time this guy did though. (I had to repeat level 8-1 many times, using that a-start thing to redo the same world). - Kles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I'd just like to clarify:
Tool-assisted runs NEVER claim to be real. They are MERELY EYE CANDY and DEMOS OF MAX POTENTIAL. They are not really impressive, but merely look pretty. They are not faked, just tool-assisted. Overcoming the limits of human error. - kolonkryss, on 06/05/2009, -0/+14You can take a look at some of the tricks/glitches used in the making of tool assisted speed runs for Super Mario Bros at his own site. I've been downloading a lot of these TAS-videos for some time.
Fun to watch, especially the Megaman/Rockman series. ;)
Anyway, the Super Mario Tricks:
http://tasvideos.org/SuperMarioBrosTricks.html - Sandman1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I miss the old version of the Super Mario games. The new ones have better graphics, but the gameplay of the new ones never beat the old ones.
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12holding b down and moving left or right allows you to run rather than walk. the reason why some of the things he's doing in the video are impressive is because it is commonly held that doing long or high jumps, for instance, requires the use of the b button. it's not just for shooting fireballs.
- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16How exactly does he do that double jump when he misses the ledge of the big gap? I'm puzzled by that.
The wierder of them was at 6 minutes and 19 seconds. - imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15@Klisk: The collision detection for the hammers are terrible in the game. Sometimes you can jump through the final Bowser's stream of hammers at the end and not get hurt, and sometimes you can miss the hammers entirely and still die. It's really wonky.
- MasterInsan0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Actually, this run does not use a bot. As far as I know (and I keep up with the speedrunning community pretty consistently) there is only one emulated run using a bot at this point, and that is Joel Yliluoma's Rockman run for the NES. Even then, it is only for a few seconds in the final run.
If you wanna learn more about tool-assisted speedruns, check out Yliluoma's site at http://tasvideos.org and look around. If you wanna learn more about normal, non-assisted runs, check http://www.speeddemosarchive.com and look around there. - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14@Snyder
That's the walljump glitch. I have only ever done that by accident. It is surprising to see him count on it as his method of crossing. Very nifty. - Pests, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11It tells you everything you need to know in the beginning. This run took 32327 rerecords. Not like anyone can do this in real life but its nice knowing what *is* possible.
- ffachopper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11ok... now without the a button! =P
- Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The DS Mario is great. Even the minigames are worthy.
- Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Cheating or not I was impressed with how he beat level 8-1.
- dofo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13And there is a few spots where it seems he runs into enemies (the squids on the last castle) with no problems. Still a neat little video.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10For ***** sake. At the the start of this video it clearly states :
"This is a tool assisted video."
WTFV before commenting. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11You mean like people trying to use Digg to advertise their blog in their comments? This is called SPAM. You are officially a SPAMMER. Yes, one of those annoying ***** who shoves their products down unsuspecting people's throats, yelling out, "HERE! BUY THIS NOW! CLICK THE MONKEY!" What's it like knowing that you've lowered yourself to this level? What's it like knowing that you're a *****?
- aer0sense, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7apparently you never played the game.
You can do it...walk over the gaps if you walk fast. The flickering is also in the real game. - Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I'm all the for the "old school" games but Super Mario Bros. for the SNES is still my favorite mario game. Mostly cause I pwn at it.
- postaldave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5level 8-2 was AWESOME! good show.
- eric0213, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If you notice at then end of 8-3 (5:51 in the video), he pauses before jumping on the flagpole to avoid getting the six fireworks (ah, memories) which would have cut into his time. I was impressed by that.
Or this could have been a lag in the video... - Dosquatch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Well, not so much with the hanging by my dick, but I beat the game in under a minute.
Granted, I was using a bat. And I forgot to film it. Does that still count as tool assisted? - ohvee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Okay look -- apparently the intro when it says "Tool Assisted Video" means nothing to most people. It means he programmed a bot with perfect accuracy. He spent hours laboring away at programming something to play the game with split second percision and accuracy. It's literally scripted, he could make that identical run a hundred times in a row."
@betterth
Actually, from what I've read this is incorrect. There aren't any bots here. It is just using frame advance and save states from an emulator. This is a person play this, just not in real time.
woops... i didn't reply right... oh well - urineboy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10jesus, how many of these goddamn mario videos are there going to be? are we going to be sitting here on digg in 2057 looking at some asswipe beating SMB in 4 minutes with his controller unhooked, the cartridge in backwards, hanging from the ceiling by his dick?
- fearmejacko, on 10/12/2007, -16/+21In the last level he jumps into the lava and jumps out unharmed, I don't think that's possible.
- jpyun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Am I the only one who was obscenely amused at the bullet bill that was following him at a constant distance for the entire level? I was like RUN MARIO RUN!!!!
- solidsmoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"he may have done save/restore at certain points"
Well yeah, it says at the start of the video its tool assisted. - cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Enjoying a cold one I almost turned it off 2minutes in. In the next 60 seconds I started to root for the little guy and hung in till the end. Real or not it brought back some nice memories...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My Wii is quite amazing.. :)
Haha, you're right. - Tossadin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5he can for sure. Its just a glitch to the game. Ive done it before. Its just tough as nails
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The hammers on 8-3 go right through him.
- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3here the actuall movie file (.fcm) so you can play it back in the FCE Ultra emulator.
http://tasvideos.org/612S.html
BTW check out Nestopia its the best emulator, in fact there was a new update jsut a few days ago. Cheers.
http://nestopia.sourceforge.net/ - Scooley01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes we all know you play with your Wii a lot.
I swear, the jokes make themselves! *giggles after anyone says "Wii"* - jpyun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are, quite a few. Try speeddemosarchive.com -- entirely un-tool assisted, most of then recorded with VHS tapes.
- smsff7, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A guess a lot of you don't understand even with save states and such you need to know the game like the back of your hand. You have to learn just about ever glitch the map layouts and such. It dose take still, but this is really for entertainment only.
- masterjenkins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How is that fake? The collision detection was really wacky on the old hardware if I remember correctly... Sometimes it would hit, sometimes it didn't. Remember this was done in several takes.
- sillyman0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Yep, that's a glitch in the original game. Go ahead, download the input sequence file if you want to.
