- kkaabboomm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+263i love the fact that on the front page of msnbc, this article is blasting JT for calling video games mental masturbation, calling himself an educator, pointing out that the kid didn't play games, pointing out JT has launched many unsuccessful lawsuits, and generally showing him to be stupid. they even point out the previous largest killing, in 1966 in tx, to show thompson's claim that 'the kid had to have trained on video games, otherwise a mass killing like this couldnt be done' was false.
EXCELLENT REPORTING msnbc. bravo. - Gella321, on 10/12/2007, -0/+95If you can get real life skills from video games, how come I still can't hit a decent slap shot after playing NHL 96 for years?
- maglob, on 10/12/2007, -6/+96Sorry.....what?
- mikeyrock, on 10/12/2007, -6/+94What the hell are you talking about?
As for me, I have a newfound respect for a new organization that originally warrented none. - topdeck55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+73"It disgusts me," said Isaiah Triforce Johnson, a long-time gamer and founder of a New York-based gaming advocacy group that, in response to the accusations, is now planning what is the first ever gamer-driven peace rally.
NICE NAME THERE TRIFORCE - reustmd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+61"This is not rocket science. When a kid who has never killed anyone in his life goes on a rampage and looks like the Terminator, he's a video gamer,"
Ignorant statements like that make me want to become more violent than any video game ever has...Of course, I'll withhold from punching Thompson in the face, because I do play video games, and he would get to much coverage explaining how video games drove me to do such a thing. - spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+60Dear ronito
If you have these issues with MSNBC why not email them or something instead of posting it on Digg where no-one from MSNBC will ever read it? - 8bit_Hero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+57Speaking of FATALITY. by JT's Reasoning wouldn't that make FATAL1TY (Johnathan Wendel)...
THE MOST DANGERSON MAN ON THE PLANET. - EnderTheThird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53It's good to see something like this on a more mainstream media site like MSNBC. Everyone on Digg already knows Jack Thompson is a crackpot, but it's good to see another media organization trying to tell the truth about video games.
And after what Jack Thompson so stupidly and ridiculously blamed on Bill Gates, I'm sure no one at Microsoft is complaining about this being posted on MSNBC. - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51Simple -- he's a narcissist.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissism_%28psychology%29
These are some defining symptoms of narcissism:
1. has a grandiose sense of self-importance
2. is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
3. believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by other special people
4. requires excessive admiration
5. strong sense of entitlement
6. takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
7. lacks empathy
8. is often envious or believes others are envious of him or her
9. arrogant affect.
10. Overreacts to criticism, becoming angry or humiliated
Jack Thompson has ALL of those symptoms. - Scyth3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+53This article should end with: FATALITY! Flawless Victory.
- dygel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44Probably not. If you watch the clip of Hardball where they had Thompson on, it was everything Chris Matthews could do to not accuse his guest of being a lunatic with more zeal for agenda than fact to break it up. It was not a comfortable interview, and shows like that don't tend to reinvite guests who prove themselves to be inane zelaots on the air. (Well, except Fox I suppose.)
- alarion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+39hey genius, they did. He was on Hardball with Chris Matthews a few days ago and Chris pretty much called him out as well.
- dualscreenman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Yeah, now you can tell it came from a 15 year old. Heh.
- reustmd, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45I'm sorry it was poorly worded, but I was complaining that this article is merely on their website. My problem is that they gave, and I imagine will give again, airtime to Thompson.
Consider many people watch interviews like the one with Thompson on TV and have no idea how absurd it is because they never read this article online. Too many people just believe what "experts" say on TV (like Dr. Phil) and take it to heart without resistance. Fortunately, Chris Matthews did make it awkward, but the effect is still there. - pdotnet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
+1 MSNBC - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37Dangerson?
- Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36"This is not rocket science. When a guy who has no clue what he's talking about goes on a rampage and looks like he's firing statements out of his ass, he's a lawyer"
- Sc0rned, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29"WTF is JT's problem?"
I think he's a closet gamer - sampson123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25It's nice to see that the mainstream media is getting educated about gaming.
- straxus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25@dualscreenman
The ability to laugh at your own mistakes is something woefully lacking around this place. Well done. - benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Isaiah Triforce Johnson. The absence of quotes lead me to believe triforce is his real middle name....hilarious
- Beatmiser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21I don't know about your hockey but I can honestly say, that after training on 'Rome- Total War' for the last two years I've never once been beaten down by an army of rampaging Gauls.
- dygel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22This one editorial has made me happier than most people can appreciate. I'm not a hateful person, but Jack Thompson has held a special place in my heart reserved for the most loathesome creatures I can fathom. All he's done from the start of his public career is spread lies and mistruths while working to profit from that. It doesn't matter to me if he really believes the bile he spews, but his consistency and persistence in doing so has been immensely frustrating because he keeps finding the ears of people who just don't know any better.
I've been playing games since I was a kid. I got my first system in 1988, so that's nigh twenty years I've called video games a hobby of mine. And in a world where there are cities whose economies thrive off of gambling and prostitution, where at least one of our politicians has to resign every month as a result of scandal and misconduct, I'm tired of being looked at as the degenerate. Thompson is a leech on society and his arrogance and zeal in the wake of the tragedy at Virginia Tech is too much to bear. I'm beyond thrilled, therefore, that the mainstream media is finally tearing apart this unscrupulous zealot, as he so richly deserves, in the public eye. - Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21"After this, therefore pertaining to anal this". Best misspelling ever!
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19It is. Think back to the Wii launch. Remember the pic of the first guy in line who shook Reggie's hand? With the Power Glove? That was the same guy.
- iSeven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15"We are normal people," he says. "We just play games."
- daniel2e, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16@dualscreenman
"propter" - burgerpocket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16personally, i just about had it with the news the other day when abc ran a piece about how the american idol contestants felt about the shootings.
say what you will about this story, at least it resembles actual ***** news. - Binto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14ugh. I couldn't find the real link at Ctr+Alt+Delete, but never the less...I felt this comic fits here.
http://webnv.net/images/blog/Image/Jack_Thompson.jpg - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Triforce was the first guy to get the Wii. He camped the line in NYC for *days* to get it.
- dualscreenman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@ Jack Thompson: Funny, I didn't think the Terminator looked like Oldboy, heh.
Yeah, a ignorant statement like that definitely riles me up.
But you get used to it and end up laughing in their faces as they fail miserably... - kublerross, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10screw that wendel guy, ill dangerson the hell out of him anyday
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@jus1haz2, Just reading your comment is very painful.
- dualscreenman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If the news agencies beat on them, the masses will listen.
It's better than the other publicity he's been getting either way... - KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I wonder how Thompson explains how he hasn't been assassinated yet by one of these perfect killing machine video gamers. I mean seriously, what better target for these rage-filled, violence honed maniacs than Jack Thompson?
- strayramblings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What really pissed me off was Fox News calling this guy an expert in school shootings. Did you guys see that? http://kotaku.com/gaming/feature/feature-dissecting-jacks-lies-252914.php
Then Kotaku ripped him apart of course. - avidlinuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Most of the article was rather objective. However, it showed that Thompson's facts were not really true. It also showed school/college violence existed long before games.
- wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15This is _MS_ NBC.
- scispaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Because this way they don't have to give him money. Seriously, the man seems to be showing the real signs of someone who is about to go postal: Raving incoherantly about "facts" that everyone knows are untrue, alone with a deep sense of perscution from enemies unseen. I am glad not to be within the tristate area of the man because he seems ready to blow.
- thorn101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I wonder if Thompson has ever fired a real gun in his life? I cannot imagine how he can think that one can develop skills to kill by handling a gaming controller or keyboard.
- worldsbestgamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It made perfect sense to me. The media will blast someone then give them air time days later.
- tf5bassist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ justice7
normal=not psychotically homicidal. - SeVeRyourTies, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Destinatus, you sir (or ma'am) are an idiot. Toecutter said nothing about race, (s)he misspelled the word COLLAR. WHITE COLLAR. You friggin doofus.
- DubbedOver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6FTA: "(Microsoft did not create "Counter Strike" but did publish a version of it for the Xbox. The company's representatives declined to comment on Thompson's letter. ______MSNBC.com is a Microsoft-NBC Universal joint venture_____.)"
I actually assumed MS initiated the article since the headline broke that JT had Microsoft in his sights bringing them bad publicity. - PaulLev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Good for MSNBC. I went up against Thompson on CNBC's Squawkbox last June, and was repeatedly interrupted not only by Thomspon but the clueless host. http://www.digg.com/political_opinion/Jack_Thompson_vs_Paul_Levinson_on_violent_video_games
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"And after what Jack Thompson so stupidly and ridiculously blamed on Bill Gates, I'm sure no one at Microsoft is complaining about this being posted on MSNBC."
ERROR Conflict Of Interest - blindwisdom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"For those who didn't grow up playing video games, the appeal of a game like "Counter-Strike" can be hard to comprehend. It can be difficult to understand that the game promotes communication and team work. It can be hard fathom how players who love to run around gunning down their virtual enemies do not have even the slightest desire to shoot a person in real life."
What the... who let IGN loose at MSNBC?!?! - aresef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15802977/
