- darkchild82, on 12/01/2007, -0/+77By the way, check out this article for more on this douchebag - http://valleywag.com/tech/jeff-gerstmann/gamespot- ...
Here's an excerpt:
"I was in the meeting where Josh Larson was trying to explain this firing and the guy had absolutely no response to any of the criticisms we were sending his way. He kept dodging the question, saying that there were "multiple instances of tone" in the reviews that he hadn't been happy about, but that wasn't Jeff's problem since we all vet every review. He also implied that "AAA" titles deserved more attention when they were being reviewed, which sounded to all of us that he was implying that they should get higher scores, especially since those titles are usually more highly advertised on our site." - Lixie, on 12/01/2007, -0/+63Dugg just for calling Josh Larson an ***** in the title.
- logicalnoise, on 12/01/2007, -1/+47guy looks like a retarded Sean Astin....wait did I just make a double negative?

This is is clearly on the side of advertisers and corporate management of image in video games. I guess with articles like this (which basically delineate a way in which developers should advertise in video games and how to attract their target audience) we now know more about his background in all this scandal - megamahi, on 12/01/2007, -0/+31FTFA: "Larson holds an MBA from the University of Virginia and a bachelor's in economics from Dartmouth College."
He has a MBA and a degree in finance, and yet he says its not about the money. What a *****. - SpectralWolf, on 12/01/2007, -0/+31Thanks for the contact info man. I've sounded off on his corporate lackey ass.
- Terminaltor, on 12/01/2007, -0/+30somebody fire this *****
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -0/+27so this guy got fired because he didn't lie to the public about a game? he gave an honest review?
- DukeMojo, on 12/01/2007, -0/+22Not all publicity is good publicity.
- PHiZ187, on 12/01/2007, -0/+19This all lies squarely in Josh Larson's lap. What kind of an executive doesn't know of the increased scrutiny that the Internet provides now-a-days. You cannot do something this shady, especially to anything with a large Internet following, without a massive backlash of negative publicity. What do you think IO Active would have rather dealt with? A middling review of their middling game Kane and Lynch? Or the appearance of buying off editors for good publicity? Bad move Josh, and one that you should have forseen had you any worth as an executive at an Internet property at all.
- meed, on 12/01/2007, -1/+18Instead of writing this guy and calling him names and etc. How about just boycotting cnet instead? Possably write other reviewing sites to give Jeff a job so he won't be unemployeed anymore? After all this stink, CNET is definatly not going to give him back his job, since it would only help prove that cnet was influence by their advertisers and then got scared when the net turned against it.
- tekirkedicik, on 12/01/2007, -0/+16is this the end of gamespot ?
- bj00rn, on 12/01/2007, -0/+16Sent him a message.. A non-offensive one, straight to the point. And I WILL try to boycott CNET related sites for a good while. I already unsubscribed from all the Gamespot and CNET podcasts.
- seattle98104, on 12/01/2007, -0/+16Rigging the system/market to favor your friends is not capitalism.
- Gryph1, on 12/01/2007, -0/+16The Company's leading brands include CNET, GameSpot, TV.com, MP3.com, CHOW, UrbanBaby, ZDNet, BNET, and TechRepublic
Just in case you wanted to avoid CNET companies.
Anyone have a more complete list? - emjaymj, on 12/01/2007, -0/+15you didn't even make a single negative, you were just being redundant.
- rubenz, on 12/01/2007, -1/+15I just walked past the CNET headquarters in San Francisco two nights ago. If I only had an egg/stone/projectile at hand...
Knowing me though, I probably wouldn't have done anything anyway. Josh Larson, I know you can't see me but I bite my thumb at you! - darkchild82, on 12/01/2007, -1/+15Your welcome :-) I hate it when when business folks like him come in & ruin things - just 'cause they think they know better.
- felchdonkey, on 12/01/2007, -3/+16He's an MBA - should be 'nuff said right there.
- 1337Einstein, on 12/01/2007, -2/+15Because important stuff is harder to do while sitting on your ass than this.
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -0/+13guys, send this link to all of your gamer friends. this ***** has to stop NOW!
- cheddar, on 12/01/2007, -0/+13I'm not sure if this post was all sarcasm or not, but judging from the lack of any punctuation whatsoever makes me think you should go back to college too.
- Dustin00, on 12/01/2007, -0/+13Sooo... what convention is Larson going to be at next?
Would be a shame if he was heckled through every panel he's on. - Sabin17, on 12/01/2007, -0/+13Gamespot became a shell of its former self after Greg Kasavin left.
- rdulaney22, on 12/01/2007, -0/+13I think this hits a nerve because it represents the sacrificing of integrety, honesty, and journalistic excellence for quarterly profits.
The same greed that led to Jeff's firing is the same greed that led to this mortgage fiasco, corrupt politics the list goes on and on.
People need to take a stand and demand integrity. If it starts with this episode then at least it starts somewhere. People need to learn that this type of corporate greed will not go unnoticed or unpunished. - scabbers, on 12/01/2007, -0/+12Because to even get "the man" to notice you're not happy with the big things involves you getting tasered and/or put on a 'watch list'.
- TantrooM, on 12/02/2007, -0/+12Seeings as stories of corrupt politicians typically get far more diggs then this article got, I find your claim pretty unwieldy.
Don't believe me, the top story now is a piece on Gulianni for over 1000 diggs... - Ninjao, on 12/01/2007, -0/+12What a wanker.
- diginess, on 12/01/2007, -0/+11Yes, this is the end of Gamespot. It is also the end of IO Interactive. CNET will live on because gamer's influence does not extend that far, but by god, I'll never forget this, and neither will a huge number of other gamers.
- xxbrighteyed, on 12/02/2007, -0/+10How ironic that pussieLicker wants to be first in line to butt rape a man
- emjaymj, on 12/01/2007, -0/+10Capitalism, by necessity, includes the ability for consumers to disagree with the practices of a certain business. Yes, the advertisers may be the ones paying gamespot, but we're no less "customers" than we would be if we were paying for it directly, because without an audience to look at them, the ads would be worthless. People go to their site to read game reviews that they trust, and this is a big slap in the face to everybody that has made the site popular.
- binaryloop, on 12/01/2007, -0/+10I'm sick of people paying for preferred treatment. The whole purpose of that site is to review games honestly so that I don't waste my time and money. If the game is a piece of ***** I want to know about it BEFORE I buy it. Jeff was doing his job and helping us out. It's sad that you can get fired for doing your job and being true to your audience. I think it's about time for an Internet wide boycott of all CNET Gaming sites. We need to get back to grass roots and start having REAL gamers give REAL reviews of games. And, if the game sucks --- don't hold any punches!
- douglosu, on 12/01/2007, -0/+10Didn't sound like moral reasons to me. If you've played this game then you'll notice all of his gripes seem pretty much right on. If you're commenting on his complaint about using the word "*****" in the game he was exactly right. It was way overdone in the game.
- demonsnake69, on 12/01/2007, -5/+15Here's the really funny thing about Digg and society in general:
When a legislator is hurting our country people don't give a ***** and some actually try to defend the person.
When someone is hurting a video game review website people are up in arms about it.
I dugg this article because I like video games and don't like what's happening at gamespot, but why do people care so much about this instead of the more important things going on in our world? - haasim, on 12/01/2007, -0/+9This reminds me of what happened to a really cool game review show called Electric Playground. A few years ago they went through a format change and suddenly they were unable to say anything harsh or unkind about any of their sponsors--which was pretty much the whole gaming industry.
- cameronjones1, on 12/01/2007, -5/+14oh jesus, he got his MBA from my university.... aw wtf
- blakck, on 12/01/2007, -0/+9"Larson holds an MBA from the University of Virginia and a bachelor's in economics from Dartmouth College."
"Over the last year there has been an increasing amount of pressure to allow the advertising teams to have more of a say in the editorial process"
Figures. Looking to protect those profits. - williamdyer, on 12/02/2007, -0/+8***** suit sounds too stupid to ever have gotten accepted by Dartmouth. Must be a legacy.
- pussieLicker, on 12/01/2007, -2/+10That larson guy needs to be butt raped, it's the only way he'll learn his lesson.
i'll go first.... - RogueJediX, on 12/01/2007, -0/+8Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNET#Websites) says:
"Other CNET websites include GameSpot, GameFAQs, Metacritic, MP3.com, TV.com, and FilmSpot, which operate under the "CNET Networks Entertainment" brand name; Chow, Chowhound, Webshots, UrbanBaby and Consumating, which operate under the "CNET Networks Community" brand; Webware, a blog launched in November 2006 dedicated to web applications.
CNET owns many domain names, including download.com, upload.com, news.com, search.com, tv.com, mp3.com, chat.com, computers.com, help.com, shopper.com, radio.com, and com.com." - Shadic, on 12/01/2007, -0/+8You mean High School?
- PISTOLcm, on 12/01/2007, -1/+9Well, I posted my final Blog on GameSpot. It reads:
Finished. Well, what can I say..We're all going to miss him. I mean, he was my favorite personality. He didnt care what other people thought of his reviews, or HOW POPUALR the game was with his boss. He always spoke his mind, not just for himself..but for US. The gamers.
Therefore, I see no reason to stay on the site. Goodbye GameSpot, home of the censorship of Jeff and the gamers. Home of the money hungry Josh Larson. Home ofthe Dartmouth suit. - Mitijea, on 12/01/2007, -0/+8I know they have GameFAQs, Metacritic and GameRanking. The latter they seemed to have been trying to kill off to help Metacritic, but lately it's been seeing a bit more support. Kind of sad though to see CNET have so much control over many of the popular aggregate sites.
- TantrooM, on 12/02/2007, -0/+7Josh is certainly all about the Benjamins...
Gamers like quality, they don't care if the person dishing out games have a lot of money. Valve did not exist before they released Half-Life. Many game companies start out a long-shot Cinderella stories.
It shows he has a lot to learn about gamers, because he is not one. - EmperorAwesome, on 12/01/2007, -1/+8"Larson holds an MBA from the University of Virginia and a bachelor's in economics from Dartmouth College."
***** suit watching his bottom line. - TantrooM, on 12/02/2007, -0/+7Just because he has a higher degree then you does not mean he is more intelligent in certain aspects of life. Just because you couldn't pass English doesn't mean people who can write are any smarter then you, they can just articulate their thoughts better.
You do not need a degree to be good at gaming. Though Josh should go back to school to understand impacts of his actions on his money. Would you rather lose a little advertisment money or get a full blown consumer riot on your hands. This kind of secrecy might be taught in his school because it worked in the days when the internet didn't exist, but this generation ain't falling for these tactics.
And don't tell me this 'it's just a rumor' bullspit, Jeff has a GAG ORDER, if the company fired him for legit reasons they would not pressure him into keeping his mouth shut. - gorilla, on 12/02/2007, -0/+7Just so Google can pick this up forever when someone searches his name...
***** you Josh Larson! - breadfred, on 12/01/2007, -1/+8Now thats just stupid, ignorant and justifying the anti gaming lobby.
- Entheoddity, on 12/02/2007, -0/+7hey kid, nice caps
