Jack Thompson Defends Mass Effect
kotaku.com — Famous anti-gaming crusader Jack Thompson calls the Fox News vs Mass Effect story contrived and self-help author Cooper Lawrence. In other news Hell freezes over.

- PropCulture, on 01/28/2008, -4/+596The world as I know it has ceased to exist. Up is down, left is right... Jack Thompson isn't being a douche...
- cliffhanger407, on 01/28/2008, -2/+121This... this can't be real. Someone tell me that this is a comedy piece and I don't need to re-evaluate all my preconceived notions on how the world works.
If this is true... that doesn't mean that physics stops working, does it?- dafragsta, on 01/28/2008, -60/+3Stammering in a comment doesn't add to it's credibility. I also think people on Digg aren't as smart as they think they are. This guy grandstanded by bashing video games on principle and exaggerated the truth so many times. Only now do Jack Thompson and the clueless soccer mom to be that went on the sexbox tirade on Fox, realize that the video game industry is too big to contain with baseless attacks. Now that the game industry has cruised past the movie industry in cash flow, you can bet their interests are looked after in Washington and elsewhere.
Don't give Jack Thompson an ounce of credibility for any penance he might pay. He still made his career highlight reel with lies.- ThndrShk2k, on 01/28/2008, -1/+19"I also think people on Digg aren't as smart as they think they are."
Then don't use so many big words in your comment. This prevents confusion, and will make your life easier.
Also, this quote applies to you too, as you are on digg, and using fancy words like that trying to sound 'smart' and 'better' makes you one of the people you deject- sgtbutterscotch, on 01/28/2008, -6/+2He wasn't talking about book smarts in the first place. He was simply trying to convey the feeling that he felt the commenter above him was not formulating a well-thought out point. And he probably gets fed up with bunches of other Diggers for their seemingly dumb comments. And I can see how your comment is very irritating because you are completely misrepresenting what he was implying in the first place.
- Myst3r1o, on 01/28/2008, -3/+8"Also, this quote applies to you too, as you are on digg, and using fancy words like that trying to sound 'smart' and 'better' makes you one of the people you deject"
PWNED! - cliffhanger407, on 01/28/2008, -0/+25Dafragsta. Hi. How are you. Please, remove the stick from your ass, and make sure that your opinions are what you think they are before you say stupid things. I was making what's commonly called a joke. I understand if that's difficult to grasp, and the stammering was not designed to enhance my credibility, but rather to convey my state of mind. I'm sorry if this is difficult for you to grasp, and wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors.
Also, please note that I didn't give Mr. Thompson an ounce of credibility ini this new ironic interpretation of what I said.
Sincerely,
Cliffhanger - dafragsta, on 01/28/2008, -7/+3Ok, it's a hatefest. I get that. The only reason I'm replying is this: "Then don't use so many big words"
If you want to rail on me for not reading the article, that's one thing, but which words did I use that put people brains under strain. I didn't bust out some Don King stupitasticfaborlucious *****. It only gives more cause for the Digg hate as of late when I see that as a complaint. Should we really devolve into less literate people just to satisfy the dumbasses that can't keep up? I just reread again and I don't think I was reaching for words on the top shelf when the ones on the bottom would've worked, just to hang some big words over people's heads.
If these are big words, I weep for your kids.- ThndrShk2k, on 01/28/2008, -0/+3It was basically
- If you think people on digg.com are dumb, don't use big words.
More of a warning, then the rest was a somewhat facetious remark. However with no one else complaining, I would assume that they believed you used fancy wording. Personally I just understood you said just fine :P - cliffhanger407, on 01/28/2008, -0/+8Stick. Ass. Pull, don't push. I think you misunderstood what I was saying.
I like using big words too, man. I really do. I also don't think that any of the words you used were big. None of my words were big either. I was just trying to convey a message which, based solely on the numbers, I think I did all right. It's cool if you're having a bad day or something, but don't come on here and call me "not as smart as [I] think [I am]," you've never met me and don't know what I actually think of myself or how smart I really am. Sure I could go into a diatribe about how you're an idiot and put on a "holier than thou" attitude like you did, but I honestly don't feel like it.

Course I ain't never seen anyone go up dat road. Six years ago a group of campers went out dere and got lost, had to eat each other to stay alive. Used to be da way to da O'Reilly house, he butchered over 50 children and kept der bodies in his cellar. But you should find an old bridge 'bout half way up. Dat bridge is cursed, ya know. Dey built it with the bones of 200 Chinese laborers who were massacred in '34. Ya, a lot of history on dat road.
- GliTCH82, on 01/28/2008, -1/+6...and dead? Yeah, she went down dat road.
- emjaymj, on 01/28/2008, -1/+29Is it really that hard to figure out that Jack Thompson is probably doing this in order to build a bit of credibility? He looks crazy to everybody now as being anti-everything-to-do-with-video-games, but next time he's accused of such he'll be able to say, "actually, if you recall, I've defended some pretty violent and sexual games, but this new game is just obscene." And most of the public, not being gamers and so not being able to see for themselves, might just take his word for it.
- Tiak, on 01/28/2008, -4/+1It is unlikely that he actually expected such an email to be published.
- emjaymj, on 01/28/2008, -0/+8There is absolutely no way he would have written that and expected Brian to keep quiet about it. I am sure that Jack Thompson is just as aware as the rest of us how jaw-dropping his statement was. As if that wasn't enough, he continues by saying, "Report that, why don't you?"
- johnnysaucepn, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1I suspect it's more because the original report of this issue is so blantantly inaccurate that it harms the credibility of his own crusade. Guilt by association.
- Tiak, on 01/28/2008, -4/+1It is unlikely that he actually expected such an email to be published.

- tektalk, on 01/31/2008, -0/+1Color me cynical, but I think I need some official confirmation of this by JT himself. There have been quite a few articles of people badmouthing Fox News for their ignorant bias towards Mass Effect on the internet recently, perhaps, rather than get bad mouthed defending Fox, he may have decided to read the articles and just agree with them to avoid the rancid angry gamer poo waiting to be flung at him.
- cliffhanger407, on 01/28/2008, -2/+121This... this can't be real. Someone tell me that this is a comedy piece and I don't need to re-evaluate all my preconceived notions on how the world works.

- ThndrShk2k, on 01/28/2008, -1/+29Not really. This only defines what we can assume he sees. Logically one could think that a story based game with an actual plot to the madness before the love-making would be the same as a movie, while GTA's effortless ability to shag any woman be a product of the more... indecent movies.
Violence without cause and effort is nothing but savagery, but a well played and optional storytelling such as Mass Effect could be a healthy game when played.
No one can argue that what he has complained about video games isn't what someone could logically see and not like. But likewise, no one can argue that video games are this generation's comic books, and that to limit what interactive things people can do in them is nothing short of limiting free speech. Thought policing in essence as comic books where non-interactive and could spark thought, while video games are interactive and people can try to emulate the thought based on the 'realities' of the virtual world they play in.
Granted this doesn't explain why the hell he is such a goddamn douche to people who do things like Penny Arcade did, does, and will continue doing. It's possible that his inner lawyer is coming back out in light of his impending barring, but who knows. Currently it's looking like his views only apply to games that senseless violence, sex, and drugs are part of, or even can be done voluntarily apart from the story
PS. Also it's sad that I have to include this from being dugg down, but here goes:
This post just states a rationalization of what could possibly his actions, based on his previous actions and this current article. He is still a crazy jackass, but with this, he becomes a more defined crazy apart from the general Giant Nutcase- ThndrShk2k, on 01/28/2008, -0/+9Also: I like the new glasses as well.
- nickj6282, on 01/28/2008, -1/+1Not that I'm defending Wacko Jacko, but I think part of the argument stems from the "accessibility" of the objectionable content in the game. in GTA, you can pretty much get to the nasty stuff just by putting the disc in the tray. With Mass Effect (I'm assuming as I only played through the first mission) you have to spend several hours actually playing the game beforehand. Something that most children either won't be able to figure out or will not have the patience to do long enough to get to the Prime-Time-TV-esque sex scene.
- RandomGorilla, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2The fact that you can now divine a rationale behind his mania means that this is the first step to devising a medication/therapy treatment regimen for him so that he may become a normal and productive member of society.

Mr. Thompson likely finds this particularly subject matter much more suitable to his palette than clockwork-orange-esque ultra-violence and inner-city relations therefore has nothing bad to say about it. Sort of like what would happen if legislation for homosexual rights isolated those rights of female-female couples because it is a sneaking suspicion that the people in power in DC would have much less of a problem with that particular configuration (reasons can remain unstated). - Starviper, on 01/28/2008, -0/+15Cause, you know, I didn't read the actual story or anything.

Jack Thompson < Satan < 100% Pure Evil < FoxNews- mescad, on 01/28/2008, -0/+41This is a little Off-topic, but my curiosity is piqued. What are Satan's good qualities that rank him a little less than pure evil?

I don't condone anyone calling anyone who is not in the field of work that they are trying to talk about as being an expert... Not to mention that you need to be 17 to buy these games, but any one can turn to FX at 9 o clock and see Nip/Tuck and it's parade of *****.
