- KJSatz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Well at least having 8cm disks would have a use at that point, right?
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -27/+5YAY spend 200-350? dollars on a hand held gamecube to play 3-4 year old games, goodluck on marketing that one.
why would nintendo even try, just look how succesful the DS is. - ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6have you played a psp? just a small disk in a plastic shell
- 12340987, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12super smash bros on wifi portable device?

The DS, per chance? - kevinchai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Crass:
Nintendo would make it $150 or less; this isn't Sony - Wiinii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think anyone would imagine Nintendo just making a smaller portable GameCube, rather maybe a new handheld with who-knows-what abilities that COULD ALSO play GameCube game disks.
You would start with a huge awesome library of games (ok, not huge but decent), and developers wouldn't have to learn anything new to develop on it.
All speculation there, but from a business aspect it makes sense for Nintendo.

- raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28I don't see why "shrinking and slowing down the Broadway chip" automatically means "portable Gamecube". It could be (and I have to imagine, probably will be) the successor to the DS, not something whose primary purpose is playing big-screen games on a little screen. That would be a Sony thing to do.
- oslointhesummer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I don't think Wiinii meant an actual handheld gamecube, more like a nextgen handheld with about the same processing power as the GC.
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Holy living snakes on a ***** plane, a handheld that plays GCN games. Just might be my first ever handheld. o_O
- ReXorcist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Maybe it's a WiiMinii since that will be playing GCN games and all...who knows.
- swimmingbird67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1gameboy evolution perhaps.
that was the name of the next-gen gameboy. that was said back when nintendo first mention the nintendo revolution.
i wouldn't see the point of it seeing how the ds is doing... quite well.- SageofLightning, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seeing as how the Chip is just now in the design stage, it would be 2-3 years before the device that used it would come out, so it fits with the sucsessor to the DS/GBA.
Note to nintendo, if your gonna have alot of GC game ports on it PLEASE put two thumbsicks and or D-pads on it!

- Kardde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It could be the next Gameboy. Nintendo always said that the DS was not the successor of the GBA. They called the DS the "third pillar," or some such. Though, since the DS has become an enormous success, Nintendo may have changed their stance on that matter.
- synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I hope they do in fact merge the DS and Gameboy pillar, it seems a little pointless to have two lines of Nintendo portables.
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The DS was given a different name (not Gameboy Dual Screen or whatever) because they didn't want to tarnish a good name in case it flopped. Good move, but proved unnecessary in the end.
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The gameboy line will always be priced under 100 bucks. I think that's one of the main reasons for the "third pillar" idea. No matter what, the next product to have the "game boy" name will launch at no more than a hundred dollars. If it really will be able to play gamecube games, then don't expect to see it for a few more years.
- navster15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is no way Nintendo could support a new GameBoy at this point. Just look at a lot of the DS marquee titles (e.g. Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, New Super Mario). They really don't use the DS special capabilities but are great on their own right. A new GameBoy would die from lack of support, as the DS could play GameBoy style games.
- Yokai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is nothing, Nintendo probably didnt want this (whats going on right now in Digg) to happen. They probably dont want to get any hopes up, due to the fact it is an empty rumor itself.
There may have been something else in there that made nintendo want to delete the intire article, information that they did not want out. They may be working on a new Game Boy that uses mini-disc technology. However, this time its standards will meet the gamecube, just like the DS meet the standards of the N64. (Well, close really)
Hmm, my only concern is if they release a new hand held now. Really, no one would want it now. They just bought a DS lite and then nintendo pulls a new one out of their ass? I dont imagine people would enjoy spending that much money because nintendo decided to update their game's appeal.- mlkmnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"This is nothing, Nintendo probably didnt want this (whats going on right now in Digg) to happen. Thats where our opinions differ tremendously. Nintendo couldn't buy the online hype created regarding the Wii, there's a story related to it on the frontpage of digg almost every day. Without the hype and rumormongering I wouldnt want a Wii as bad as I do.... - linuxpunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nintendo's handheld product cycle is something like 1.7 years per release. Unfortunately, whenever you buy something they will pull something new on you.
Having said that, I love my DS and want a DS Lite as well. Nintendo knows how to get you to keep coming back, that's for sure.

- HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1about 2 nights ago I listened to a podcast interview with Benjamin Heckendorn(well known console portablizer), he hinted out plans for a portable xbox360(gah! XD) and portable gamecube..
http://benheck.com check it out :) - theratdotus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1i do remember hearing about something of the ds not being the next gameboy, and that a gameboy was still in the works..but a portable gc would be stupid. only cause after the wii comes out i dont think they would even make any more gc games... then again, the wii plays gc... speculations are stupid.
HEY LOOK! THERE GOES JESUS! - indirect, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To me a portable Gamecube in a couple of years makes perfects sense. Developers wouldn't have to learn a new system. It would launch with hundreds of games, and you could play them on your Wii/Gamecube if you wanted. My guess is that the big N is looking for better battery technology for the spinning media.
- yyy11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If a portable gamecube would be launched it would most certainly be after the regular gamecube was dropped from developers schedules. Which would be the best chance for the system to be successful. If they do a few things. One let it play the gamecube games (obviously) this is to get regular parents and casual gamers interested. Two price it cheap which is always a good idea for a systems release. Three put a memory slot on it and since the technology is old release the gamecube's Dev kits to the public. That would make it the ideal system for home brew software and home brew games. If these things were to happen and coupled with WiFi gaming there would be no reason why it shouldn't be a success
