- nerdherder, on 04/21/2009, -0/+21Oh Dreamcast, we hardly knew ye...
- bixby1, on 04/21/2009, -0/+20That was comprehensive as hell. SEGA never quite learned to play the hardware game and it bit 'em good in the end, but I liked a lot of their games.
- serif69, on 04/21/2009, -5/+21MasterSystem > NES. There, I said it.
- ivanwave, on 04/21/2009, -0/+14Dugg for good writing
- ssquared22, on 04/21/2009, -0/+12That piece was awesome. SEGA systems were amazing, too bad they did "get" hardware as well as game development
- EnderMB, on 04/21/2009, -0/+12I sometimes wonder why Sega even left the console industry. They are viewed favourably by many, despite their failures. Hell, I'd say their position was in no way different to Nintendo's after the Gamecube proved to be a flop. I'd love to see Sega re-enter the console market with a new, powerful machine.
Nintendo have done a lot to make gaming fun again, but there just aren't any good games out on the Wii apart from the same couple of first-party games that everyone already owns. I respect them for trying something new, but there's no way the Wii is going to last another 2 years. I was always a Sega fan, and even though they've raped Sonic to oblivion I still respect them and think they could pull it off.
If Nintendo had any sense they'd use their Wii money to buy out Sega, Square-Enix and some western studios and work on making a console with some good games next time around. Hell, Nintendo could've bought a stake in the hardware division of Sun and built their own console... I want to see their dirty Rare/Wii money put to good use! - YME1280, on 04/21/2009, -0/+11SEGA is great. They really need to do more ***** like Mad World. The Sonic franchise is stale as *****.
- airwalke, on 04/21/2009, -0/+9So, basically, if SEGA of Japan hadn't been such buzz-killers, they'd basically own the gaming industry?
- Cannonballkid, on 04/21/2009, -3/+10I Have a DREAMcast!
- airwalke, on 04/21/2009, -0/+711 pages of detailed history behind the game company. Go take your ritalin and get back to the article, it's a good read.
- Wiggletits, on 04/21/2009, -0/+6i support this remark
- solid12345, on 04/21/2009, -0/+6Comix Zone 2 please.
- tobiasproject, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4SUPER HANG ON / AFTERBURNER
- inactive, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4The leap made from PSX/Saturn/N64 to the Dreamcast was absolutely startling. It was way ahead of it's time, but unfortunately failed beneath Sony's superior marketing plan.
- SpeedyThing, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3Excellent article. SEGA were (for a time) the best there was.
- sdigroup, on 04/21/2009, -3/+6Dreamcast > all gaming systems
- xsecretfiles, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3Dear SEGA, stop it with the same Sonic games over and over, or you are going to doom yourself once again...
Thanks, - quomen, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3I wish Sonic had the longevity that Sega did.
- medj, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3Sega should do something special for some upcoming Sonic anniversary. Maybe an HD remastered version of Sonic 1 or 2.
- Moonkeeper, on 04/21/2009, -1/+4The console wars.....
I remember in school there were always debates over which system was better - the Genesis or the SNES. When I was in 6th grade it was about even, by eighth grade the Genesis fans outnumbered the SNES fans.
Reading about Sega of Japan's ego made me want to rip my hair out. Combine with what they did to Saturn's Sonic game and a movie producer making a movie about failure could not make more mistakes then Sega did at this time. To this day, my friends while hanging out will still occasionally play retro games. Two of the most common series' we play are Streets of Rage and Golden Axe. - inactive, on 04/22/2009, -0/+2Sega had the touch of creating great games before the end of the Dreamcast. It seems like that loss really impacted their game design and quality as they started churning out sequels for quick money. It's really too bad they are usually just making shovelware for the Wii now.
- FFXIfrohike, on 04/22/2009, -0/+2Remember when the PS2 first came out and the Dreamcast owners were poking fun at the ***** launch games? Remember the flame wars on Usenet?
Ah memories.
Here's a video from the era:

- victorycig, on 04/21/2009, -1/+3Neat, but kinda clunky.
- fcrow, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1GOTTA catch them all!!!
- freshyill, on 04/21/2009, -0/+1Well you wouldn't know it from sales figures. It's apparently offering plenty to the people who are willing to buy them. I own a 360, not a Wii or PS3, and I fully understand the appeal of the Wii. Do I wish it could do high definition? Sure. I'd probably have one by now if it did. Do most people give a rat's ass? Clearly not.
Numbers: http://vgchartz.com/ - lostinseganet, on 04/22/2009, -0/+1Long live Dreamcast! :(
- demne, on 04/21/2009, -1/+2Didn't they do this a few years ago? Still better than most things posted to digg.
- fcrow, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1SEGAS GONE BUT NINTENDO STILL MAKES CONSOLES.
Just had to be said, still love the SEGA megadrive more then the SNES. - UnPaddieTitled, on 04/22/2009, -0/+1Hell yeah! Good to see some people still remember that game.
- freshyill, on 04/21/2009, -1/+2Yeah, the DS and the Wii seem to be really crappy and unpopular. Clearly, they're not giving customers what they want.
- adamb10, on 04/22/2009, -0/+1SEGA DOES WHAT NINTENDONT
- nickert0n, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1I for one support your request in a formal fashion.
- Wiggletits, on 04/21/2009, -1/+2yes....but do you have a DREAMsicle?
- nickert0n, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Very well written article that kept we engaged for the entire read through, I find it classic the Microsoft tactic's with trying to "help" the Dreamcast though, for shame.
- babyheadout, on 04/21/2009, -0/+1I knew the final nail in the coffin for my Sega devotion was the utter disappointment of Phantasy Star Universe, which incidentally was my Xbox 360 system seller. At least I've been holding a tiny torch by playing the recently released Outrun Online Arcade (about 10 hours logged so far).
- Shaflugi, on 04/22/2009, -0/+1Convinced? Did you even read the article? The real failure started when they started making addons to the Genesis and made bad decisions with the Saturn.
- momedefome, on 04/22/2009, -1/+2I have a SEGA GENESIS , SEGA CD , SEGA GAME GEAR , SEGA SATURN AND SEGA DREAMCAST . SEGA will always kick ass!!!!
- CanadaMan87, on 04/22/2009, -0/+1Normally I'd comment with a simple "tl:dr", but I always loved SEGA, so I read this eleven-page eulogy. It's a great article, if you care to read it all. Kudos to Travis Fahs and IGN for compiling this fascinating and informative history of the company whose products will always be remembered fondly as part of my childhood.
- CanadaMan87, on 04/22/2009, -1/+2Well the article explains it pretty clearly. SEGA was poorly managed from its Japanese headquarters and when it was finally taken over by Sammy, its best studios were consolidated and its most visionary designers jumped ship. If SEGA tried to make another console today, it just wouldn't be the same.
- anTii, on 04/21/2009, -1/+2I'm convinced, as soon as sonic went 3D, Sega was doomed.
- frepnog, on 04/21/2009, -0/+1i dunno. the regular "sonic" parts of Sonic Adventure were ***** awesome.
too bad the other parts sucked. and Sonic Adventure 2 was just terrible. Why force me to play as the other lame characters when all i want to do is go super fast collecting rings as Sonic??? - dalieu, on 04/21/2009, -0/+1I still play my Sega Dreamcast and think it's one heck of a system!
- ofenza, on 04/21/2009, -0/+1I think that now would be a great time for SEGA to launch a new console. There's great momentum.
- FFXIfrohike, on 04/22/2009, -1/+2Space Harrier, Alex Kidd, Miracle Boy, Zillion... and *****' Shinobi. Hell yeah :)
- jbell1, on 04/21/2009, -0/+0for whatever it is worth they have an awesome background...
- VGNetwork, on 08/17/2009, -0/+0Really good article! I think that SEGA is a great company, and with its consoles it has helped the evolution of the videogames. Unluckily, the market is a killer without mind.
- insaniakq, on 04/22/2009, -1/+1pointless, ign has the bandwidth.
