- Amablue, on 10/11/2007, -1/+52And grown-ups will still call the DS a gameboy (or GameBoy DS)
- Billistic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+38Make way for Game Man!
- lilbitmoreslyk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29R.I.P Gameboy: Gave happiness to millions, and headaches to parents.
The world will miss you - NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27Does this mean my 1980s "Big grey box" Original Gameboy, (which still works) will be worth more soon?
- Haydio, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23and call the psp a gameboy 0_o
- kupa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Isn't this old news? I've been hearing for awhile that the GBA:SP/Micro will be the last line of "Game Boys" -- is this really news at this point?
- Lonecow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Wow thats kind of crazy because it basically confirms that Nintendo halfway expected the DS to fail. When the DS came out they were like, "Don't worry the next Gameboy is on it way, this is our third pillar". But they just said that to ease people's minds in case the DS was a total disaster.
- DoodleMaster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Dust in the wind all we are is duts in the wiiiiind....I'ma miss ya boy.....*cry*...re-remember taht time i played when i was grounded.....*sniff* good times ole ' buddy now go on GIT No gameboy, you can't you can't be here no more go n GIT go *brings out shot gun shoots it up in the air, gameboy runs away* *deep sobbing*....."the next day".....Well hello there sexy Ms.WiiWare can you help play with my wii.
I don't know what the ***** I'm on right now - smergs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Does anyone else remember when playing video games in general was called playing Nintendo?
Parent - "You need to do something else instead of playing Nintendo so much."
Kid - "But I'm not playing Nintendo. I'm playing Sega Genesis! Guess that means I can keep playing." - slimasian, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Def. RIP Gameboy. I played Tetris and Zelda on a flight to the Philippines from LA -- would have been excruciating if not for my GB.
On a side note, Anyone else thrilled with the DS Lite as much as I am? Having a long commute everyday (1 hour 45 minutes each way), it is a lifesaver...and I've rediscovered how great an RPG Final Fantasy VI (aka Final Fantasy III on the SNES) is! - Virak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I find it funny how it's always the unrealistic portrayal of females in video games that's brought up and never that of males. At this point, it's pretty much meta-sexism.
I wonder which will come first: meta-meta-sexism or people realizing that both sexes have been depicted unrealistically in fiction since the beginning of time? - Itspeople, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9To be completely honest, I don't think the retirement of the name would affect anybody that much.
It's just a name (a well recognized one)
A majority of adults would still call it the Game Boy anyway. - ElbridgeGerry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Marketing exec "George Harrison"?
While my Game Boy gently weeps... - Step1Mark, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Not that anyone cares but i just picked up the GBA Micro for 50 bucks new. If you really think about the library and the cost of used games for the GBA:Micro its a sweet deal. plus because the screen is slightly smaller the image looks more crisp.
- beckerist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Oh man, and with no backlight on the original, trying to play under my covers at night with a flashlight (or worse, a pen light) was the sole cause of MANY headaches! Many many good times had...
...RIP indeed! - jjed824, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I don't think the other people on the road with you are as thrilled as you about your DS.
- commodore64, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Do you know how many of those units are still floating around? It won't be worth much for a while.
- jasonpoon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Nintendo said they will still make the next gen Game Boy when the DS debut as the DS is a totally different product. I wondered how could they take the dual touchscreen back and make a Game Boy again (even with better graphic).
Now we all know that the GB micro would be the end of this trademark. - YoctoYotta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5While I respect your opinion, I must argue, boobs could always use more sides.
- acdcfanbill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4you mean you don't have elf ears? or are a muscle bound super-man? get with the times mate! :P
- omnibahumut, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5When I talk to non-gamer types, I have to call my DS a gameboy, otherwise I get strange looks and have to explain it every time. It gets tiresome so I just call it my gameboy.
- b3mus3d, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I swear, the nation's collective conscience (if that's the right word) can only hold one game console name at a time. It used to be that kids played 'nintendo', now they play 'playstation'.
Soon, if nintendo has their way, they might play 'wii'.
Hell, maybe the 'children' stereotype will go away at some point. That'd be nice. - Hojohto, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5But where is Ringo?
- NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3yes... rip... but it's retiring not dieing... XD
- SeBBBe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ya, it's awesome. I was one of the few to get t it as well, but it's not gotten much attention, to be honest. My DS Lite keeps my quite busy on the go.
- ThomasOkken, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Retired or not, the Game Boy is indestructible. I'll probably be playing Tetris on mine until the day I die.
- slimasian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3haha yes i take the bus, no worries ladies and gents
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3FFVI was recently released for the GBA, so there you go... ;)
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4"Having a long commute everyday (1 hour 45 minutes each way), it is a lifesaver.."
If you are driving and playing it sounds like it is gonna be a life taker. I really hope you ride the bus. - Numfar28, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Good point, hadn't thought of it like that. Plus I imagine Nintendo will be much happier re-selling games on memory cards rather than letting people use their already-owned games.
- grumbel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I doubt this will ever happen. While Gamecube discs are small, but they are not small enough, they are a good centimeter larger then UMDs, so to play them you would need a device larger then PSP or the original NintendoDS, not such a good idea in times when "small is sexy". They also can't store all that much data, 1.5GB isn't all that great when you can buy SD cards with that capacity for 10EUR, i.e. solid state storage is already pretty close to Gamecube discs in terms of price and might easily surpass it till Nintendo has their Gameboy2.0 ready (if ever), in terms of size solid state media has already won.
- Mearn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I think it would be more like Coke changing the name of their fruit-flavored soda line from Minute Maid to Fanta, which they did in 2001.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2When I first started reading about Nintendo a couple of years ago I was like George Harrison, sweet an ex Beatle works at Nintendo.
- PFS1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Pardon the offtopic discussion, but slimasian, might I ask what emulator you use to play ff6 on the DS? I've tried a bunch without much luck. Being able to take ff6 with me has been a holy grail since I got my DS, but I haven't been able to obtain it thus far.
- dagamer34, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Uhh... maybe that's because Coke doesn't have a stronger product out there besides well... Coke.
- skywake, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3optical disks on a portable system? that'll never work.....
:P - SLIPSTR3AM, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I STILL get people calling my DS a Gameboy. Not that it's a sucker punch to make it lesser than, but it is more like a bigger brother. It is definitely different in many ways, and alike in many ways too.
- Elric77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Clearly it hasn't worked
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I dugg your comment, and then I realized I'm an adult now
- GeorgeTuk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I thought it had already gone since the DS is the DS and not a Game Boy. Still let the blogger have his day of geek fame courtesy of Digg
- SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2My 7-years-old stepson calls my GP2x a gameboy. This is not restricted to the elderly at all.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3This sucks. I loved playing Zelda on my Gameboy way back in the day.
- brownspank, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So does Ben Heckendorn.
- grumbel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+120 million PSP owners might think different.
- b3mus3d, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I was considering getting one, but I couldn't really justify the purchase when the DS Lite was available for 40 pounds more.
(over here, the ds lite is 100 quid and the micro was 60 at the time.)
( My 'three/pound' button is broken btw ^_^) - slimasian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yep, exactamundo from Tippis -- FFVI (much to my delight) was released late last year on the GBA, which will play on your DS.
Aura Cannon time! ;-) - HsoKinees, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1heh, my dad plays pokemon diamond on my "gameboy" x_X gameboy 2.0 with dual screens! :D
- StealthTomato, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Dugg you down for a weak attempt at a pun that was so stupid, I FELT my IQ drop.
- Amablue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Technically, I am too. But I don't think of myself that way =P I'm a kid who's forced to work and pay for stuff. But I'm still a kid that loves his toys.
