- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11i'm probably -- more like definitely -- going to get dugg down, but that's pretty crap. i was expecting actual consoles, not empty dvd
cases with a font style borrowed from the least nintendo of gaming franchises, gta
the normal route with a project like this would be a 3d cuout or with enough time, sculpture, then a poster or even video or animation. rather bland dvd cases and a bought shop display really don't impress me as cutting edge design
seriously: how many museums, shops, cinemas, expos, whatevers have you seen that use little empty cases on a display to get their message across? - Ignathius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10i gotta agree. what's shown in the pics, isin't very creative, at all. sure, she may have spent a bit of time getting the graphics to look good, but the whole thing looks like a bargin bin of bollywood DVDs.
now if those DVDs actually contained a documentary on the history of nintendo that she created herself, then that would be something. as it is, i see crap like this every time i walk into a gaming or electronics store (i.e., this display type is so creative that i wouldn't even notice it was there, unless i was looking for a cheap copy of Video Violence). - KnockoutNerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Makes me a proud fanboy.
- LLamaStar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This is excellent work.
But I bet anything if a guy made this nobody would care. ZOMG GIRL ON THE INTERNET!!!11 - MrStabby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As a Nintendo fan myself...
I wish I had this much vision and determination to follow through on a project like this...
This is more than just a fan at work, this is a designer/thinker at work...
Great job! - markperia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5that would get the highest mark of the class.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Man, that is hardcore. I just wish I had an opportunity to do something like that for my graphic design program.

http://www.destructoid.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5003 - phoZoN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that's some serious dedication, very impressive
- tehuberone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2She has a lot more info about it on the forums.
- VirtualGirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2jim1977: The cases were not empty, each one had up to an eight page booklet with all the information on that subject on it. It was actually a very information heavy project. That is what took the majority of the time! I would have loved to do some sort of digital display, like you mentioned, but it was not allowed for the project... I decided to go with the concept of the DVD rack because i wanted the viewer to feel like they were shoping for a game. That is why i put the title on the front, the table of contents on the back, and the information on the inside..the format of a game...
sorry some of you guys did not like the project, lol, i guess it was not what you expected. Like i said, i would have loved to have it been digital in some way, but that was not allowed for this project.
And0: It did cost that much, probably more. The rack i bought on ebay for $50. Then all the other supplies, the DVD cases, the CD label kit, the Large format printing ($20 a square foot), the spray paint, the regular printing, the lamination...all of that went well over $250. I spent over 50 hours on it as well...most of it on research...and creating a library of illustrations i made to use in the project...it was a lot of work...
Thanks for the support guys...and for the rest, i am always up for constructive comments, i am always looking to improve as a designer! - Jeffler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They aren't empty dvd cases. Inside them are handbooks to describe that section.
- TheMysteryCow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have to agree - within the scope of the project, I think this design fails utterly. As others have pointed out, the fonts used (aside from Nintendo logos) are very reminiscent of either the GTA franchise or, as I thought, the fonts used by Gamestop. If the professor had any knowledge of the industry, they'd pretty easily recognize some potential brand confusion in the project message. Since this project is supposed to be reflective of *Nintendo's* product history, that confusion would knock its potential usefulness down quite a bit, in my book.
- Aktrez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@stevealford You crack me up! First of all, if you did a little bit of research on that very site (like reading the comments) you would see that VirtualGirl posts pictures of herself. She has also posted a link to her Myspace. She is a model and has MANY photos of herself from modelling shoots as well as regular family pictures. Enough proof she's a girl for you?
I find it very humorous that your first assumption is that she isn't a girl because her art is based off of video games. You know, a good majority of the video game inspired art/creatives out there are done by females. Yes... attractive women DO play games and DO go to school to get into the industry. It's not 1988 anymore sweetie!
I've said it before, Meg, I'll say it again here. Great job. Very creative! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2she could have failed -- if the project was to make a display about the history of an entity and she basically made some dvd covers and put them on a display rack, she hasn't really displayed any information about the subject. however, the 2d design work is nice, even though this is seriously not working to the brief and seriously lacking in impact. nobody walked away from this piece thinking "WOW, THAT'S THE HISTORY OF NINTENDO"
- quickslvr1287, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@stevealford
you lose
http://www.myspace.com/meaganvanb - VirtualGirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was the laughing stock of the class...but i dont care! I am used to it...I had my friend who did her project on the history of Manga there to support me...lol
- And0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seriously, I didn't realize printing DVD cases took months and cost $250. The descriptions made it sound like some massive work of art; this looks like a friend from Hollywood Video gave her an extra DVD rack. I'd like to see the other final projects for this class. DVD case labeled "History of Radio"? +A !
- omgroffles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"There is a difference between "tyrannical rule" and ruling like Willy Wonka did over his chocolate factory (Gay analogy, I know). Nintendo has never really been the type of company to just go "We'll do what we feel like, 'cause you're kinda stuck with us".They have only controlled the market because nobody else comes out with anything that rivals them ('cept Sega, R.I.P.). They've always been helpful and curtious on the support end, and most products exceed expectation, as well as last forever."
Oblivious. Just because Nintendo had "childish" products doesn't mean they had "childish" business tactics. The company was run by the fearless Yamauchi, not the cute Miyamoto. Imagine a monopoly not much different than Microsoft; Nintendo controlled everything in the market because they were the market. Companies followed their rules and any profit ever made was shared with Nintendo. Those who failed to comply went bankrupt. Competing with Nintendo wasn't even possible. The only reason Sega was successful was because third parties wouldn't put up with Nintendo anymore. Nintendo was and still is its own worse enemy. - totallymike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Going gold would imply that they created a master disc to replicate and send to stores. I'm pretty sure they just branched 2.0.0.0 in their version control system.
- bumb1ebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wasn't impressed with it either. After reading the first few comments before checking out the link I was expecting something much more than a DVD display case containing information in booklet form with a bland design. Did the CDs even have information in them?
- shieldst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool indeed, I don't remember putting as much care and attention into anything I've created!
- proghead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2so do we actually get to see it?
- Mimi42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@stevealford
So you just assume that every good-looking girl can't put two and two together?
I don't get it... Why is it that every time a girl has created something marvelous and incredible that relates to something technical or has something to do with computers and games in any way, people tend to believe it is either a fake, or that a guy that made it. That has happened to me tons of times, people have by mistake been thinking that I was a boy, and if not, they have been accusing me of stealing or copying my work. - Not that what I do is that incredible, but that just makes the whole situation even more unacceptable.
I think VirtualGirl has done an excellent work! - kurfu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I stopped reading when the author used the evil words "after the jump." This ain't Battlestar Galactica, dammit.
- phmcd10, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0http://www.wiifinders.com
- ursername180, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I love it. But honestly, she would've been the laughing stock of the class.
- Fillado, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1@knockoutnerd: That's because she missed out the part of Nintendo's history where they were bigger pricks than Sony currently are. Then you really wouldn't be proud.
- stevealford, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0I bet that handle "VirtualGirl" is a lot more accurate than most site members realize. I'll give 17 to 1 odds that it's a guy. I doubt that many chicks who looks as good as the pic for "VirtualGirl" would have the time or desire to put together a project like that.
