Halo 3 Control Scheme Released
bungie.net — In this week's "Bungie Weekly Update", the multiplayer control scheme for Halo 3 is released, sadly excluding the x button. Also, a Halo 3 Teaser is revealed along with more Beta information (looks like we are going to have to wait a bit longer).

- sorahn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36More importantly, it is now confirmed that Halo 3 will launch in Fall of 2007.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Yes, and for those who don't understand when Fall 2007 actually occurs: Sept 21st (or so) - Dec 21st (or so, the date varies)
Sorry for the 7/7/7 fans. Bungie will most likely release something interesting on that date (due to their affection towards the number 7) but that is not the release date.
So for the Halo 3 obsessed gamers out there (myself included): Just take a deep breath, circle the first two weeks of November on your calendar, and be content with the idea that Halo 3 will most likely be coming out sometime during that time period. - goonbaggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't think many people were betting against that, but it is nice to get confirmation.
- Ocelot13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13im guessing 11/12/07 or 11/05/07 or 11/19/07
$1000 says it comes out on one of those days (sticking to Tuesday release dates)
otherwise, 11/15/07, 6 year anniversary of the Xbox and Halo - oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Follow up interview video with head of Microsoft Game Studios. Talk about the Halo 3 Beta.
http://digg.com/gaming_news/Head_of_Microsoft_Game_Studios_Talks_Halo_3_Beta - CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"they aren't going to be disrespective like that." Explain please.
- questionable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Bombing of London buses.
Like how people don't like to have events on 9/11. - blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Hmm, beat. Here's the Wikipedia explanation though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_July_2005_London_bombings
- Cleanlyness, on 10/12/2007, -20/+6oh come one! london bombings? boo hoo. that was a wake-up call to you brits and all you say is "dont release a game on that day!"
bungie had the number 7 long before that boi. Bungie isn't exactly a britisch company either LOL - Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't really think it'd be disrespectful for Bungie to release the game that day. It's the ultimate Bungie day, since the London Bombings took place on Bungie day. You wouldn't necessarily want a European release that day, but I really think that people aren't as affected by those kinds of things anymore. 9/11 will come and pass for me just like Pear Harbor's anniversary will come and pass for me. I guess it may depend on how effected your family was by the day, but I wouldn't say no to a release on Bungie day. oO;
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Wow. What the *****. Commented in another article, and it put it here, sorry. Please bury.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Yes, and for those who don't understand when Fall 2007 actually occurs: Sept 21st (or so) - Dec 21st (or so, the date varies)
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Ok, this makes me happy beyond words: "Click left and right sticks: Crouch and zoom – just like H2, although there is a “toggle crouch” option, so that you can stay crouched until you click the stick again."
Thank God for the "toggle crouch" option. Why some games make it so difficult to crouch for extended periods of time is beyond me.- eastbeast314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Agreed, but I doubt a toggle will be as useful in Halo as in other games due to the tremendous benefits of crouch-jumping to reach higher places.
- dustysquareback, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Agreed. Toggle crouch would be nice sometimes, but crouch-jumping renders it totally silly. Halo is really too fast paced for constant crouching.
- Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really see toggle crouch as being useful in one condition: Early on in the game when you're camping in a flag contest spot like on Burial Mounds. But whenever people latch on and know those areas like the back of your hand, it's really going to be more a case of keeping your mic muted than alerting them on the radar.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, I wasn't even thinking of crouching in multiplayer. Just singleplayer.
- CAPSLOCKISCOOL, on 10/12/2007, -38/+2Halo is too overrated. What's so special about it?
- freetyme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28great multiplayer (well that's what I play it for)
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Seconded, I played it on Live for 18 months. And tonight at 11 I'm having a "reunion" with like 10 guys I used to play with on Live. I don't give a ***** about it being "Halo 1.5" or not a good game, I had too much fun with it.
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I loved it for the multiplayer, and the campaign was replayable many times.
Sounds like someone never got their Xbox.
Quick question:
What the ***** is too overrated? Is there a form of overrated that is within normal boundaries? Doesn't the "over" prefix already explain this? - unununium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually thought Halo was just overrated enough to be fun, but still be complained about by everyone who never played it.
- dustysquareback, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Dammit. I REALLY want the melee to be mapped to a button you don't have to use your aiming thumb for.
And in other news. OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG I can't wait! Yay for Beta in spring! ( I got in on phase 1)- Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You can still change the control scheme. I was always a fan of Boxer personally.
- ChaserHimself, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Boxer FTW.
- Kinsbane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You could always use what my buddies and I did called, "The Claw". Basically you have the thumb on the stick, middle finger on the trigger and you bring your index (pointer) finger to the diamond-shaped button layout to work those buttons. Took a while to get used to.
But then I just put my melee on the left trigger and grenades on the B button and I was happy. - badbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3By reading dusty's threads in this article, I can only assume he's a liar.
- asif5th, on 10/12/2007, -17/+9If the MP is anything like H1, then Bungie has a huge hit on their hands. Anything that even resembles H2 MP will be a disaster. From the horrible melee, to the horrendous auto-aim, the smg, the lack of a pistol, and no fall damage. Bring back the original physics that made playing with the warthogs freaking awesome. Get rid of the autoaim on the ***** rocket, one of the most satisfying feelings was shooing down a jeep half way across the map in Halo 1. Basically, get ready of all radical changes made in the 2nd one, and bring the multiplayer back to its glory, alas halo 1.
- xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14I actually liked the no fall damage...
- Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Halo 2 mutliplayer still has quite a large playerbase, although I know how you feel. From what I can tell, they're taking all the "features" from Halo 2, and putting them back into the "awesome" from Halo 1. The return of the Assault Rifle, the return of the M6D pistol, the return of the shotgun that doesn't suck, battery on the sword, rockets without lock, the Mongoose, the freakin Galilean laser, the return of the Needler that doesn't suck, Spike Grenades, less emphasis on dual wielding, less autoaim, the improved party and waypoint system, etc. It looks to be the true sequel of Halo: Combat Evolved with all the incredible features that made Halo 2 an online hit.
- dustysquareback, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yeah, I'll admit, when fall damage was removed I thought "WTF?" But.... I love it. The only way I would EVER want fall damage back is if it only started at like 5+ stories. The increased freedom just adds so much movement to the flow of the game.
Anyone that thinks the old pistol was the best thing ever has never played HaloCE in a large multiplayer environment. And yes, I can 3 shot, so don't give me any n00b garbage. It was a silly, overpowered weapon. I notice it's making it's return with an 8 round clip (used to be 12) which is good. I'm betting it will be a 4 or 5 shot kill this time around, though. And I think heat-seeking rockets are fine, as long as the warthog can take a little more damage. It was definitely too wimpy in H2. - mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"the return of the needler that doesn't suck"
Excuse me but the needler has always sucked, though it sucked a little less in Halo 2. - zzz@tkz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2To me, Needlers never sucked. HaloCE had the awesome explosion, which made it awesome, and Halo 2's can easily own snipers.
- Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree about the rockets. It was much less satisfying to shoot one down in Halo 2. And it added the annoyance of not being able to just immediately shoot at one that was right in front of you.
Needlers have always been a little on the not as effective as they should side, and the pistol was very much over powered. I hope they remove the scope, keep the power (add more recoil though) and make it a non-auto weapon, and also make it take more to kill a person. The magnum was not that bad of a weapon, it was just very much a dual weapon, which I agree that they pushed a bit too much in Halo 2 (though I do see the realistic need for the increased emphasis with weaker weapons.)
I personally would like to reduce headshot boxes and autoaim significantly (make the netcode base such things on your ping or what not) that way it becomes very much a TrueSkill scenario. I'm also hoping for some fun options like infinite grenades or non-destruct vehicles for multiplayer fun. Who knows what they've got up their sleeves? - TheBEAST205, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ asif5th
ALSO, if you had any decent knowledge of Halo, you'd know that a group of Spartans made a 3 mile free fall in the Fall of Reach and survived, so I'm sure they could survive a 10 story drop. - Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, but several of them died in that drop, and they also had to change their settings significantly to account for the damages (to which they took severe amounts of damage.). Not to discredit you or anything, but I think some sort of fall damage, or an effect from falling from a large height, should be taken into account. Not like it was in Halo CE, but certainly some and a short paralysis after falling from the top of the pump on Waterworks to the ground.
I'm not asking for fall deaths, but there should be some sort of penalty to it.
- miyamotofreak, on 10/12/2007, -18/+1All this stuff is kinda old. EGM had all the information way back in their december issue.
- dustysquareback, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Wrong.
- moofree, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3I had a dream that Halo 3 would support usb keyboards and mice. Then I woke up.
I'm gonna go back to sleep.- joaob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I like to get away from my keyboard and mouse every once in awhile.
- SNudds, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3Lame. Halo is just another microsoft game. I only play games on my ubunto computer.
- xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I really do hope that was sarcasm.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I'm pretty sure it was... oh well.
- t3hNinj4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Lame. Halo is just another microsoft game. I only play on my Apple II, TurboGrafx 16 and abascus.
Seriously, Ubuntu's great for a lot of things, but gaming ain't one of them. Do yourself a favor, get a console or run Windows. - SNudds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll
- Link459, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5So what's reload? D:
No more BXR? ;_;- Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4RB is reload and yes, no more weapon glitches.
- Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank God! Let's hope they make it so you can't exchange an overheating plasma weapon either. o.x; Then we won't have n00b combo troubles.
- Jayvis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Did anyone else buy Halo 2 and never touch the story mode because they were too busy with MP?
- Cleanlyness, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1lol You played the multiplayer of halo2? it sucks
- pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I did, I got into MP long before i started the campaign.... then when i actually did start it, i got bored about 3/4 the way through and went back to MP.. I have to admit, i was one who pre-ordered the game, and happen to be one that still plays on line a few times a week at least.
- dustysquareback, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yeah, me too. I played HaloCE for 3 years, and replied the campaign on Legendary prob once a month. I've been playing Halo2 multi since it came out. Having a big Halo party tonight as a matter of fact. But I never replay the Halo2 campaign. It sucked :(
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't think the campaign sucked as much as the multi-player stole the show.
- Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I always play through a game's campaign before I touch multiplayer (except with Halo CE. I didn't have an XBox so I played the multiplayer before I got to play through the campaign). I loved the story in Halo 2 (Arbiter is awesome regardless what anyone says), but I do think the gameplay in it was lacking. Very much a linear experience as opposed to Halo CE where I could take about 5 different paths in any given situation. The game was solid if you don't call it Halo, but if you played through Halo CE then you were definitely expecting more out of the sequel than was delivered.
- PaiZuri, on 10/12/2007, -19/+2With the disaster that Gears has turned out to be - massive lag problems, network connection problems, broken gameplay - Bungie is really lucking out with really having no competition. Just like with Halo 2 there is going to be almost nothing else to buy on the 360 in online gaming.
You have to wonder if Bungie knows this and explains why they don't really seem to be putting much effort into the game - right now the test version looks not much better than Halo 2 on the Xbox.- Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/10/arts/design/10game.html?ex=1328763600&en=f09fdbd5c6894b0d&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
http://kotaku.com/gaming/gears-of-war/gears-of-war-sells-2-million-copies-222103.php
Yea.. What was that again? - PaiZuri, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Wow, Gears of War went head to head with Viva Pinata on the 360 and came out on top!
- Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Wow, Resistance went head to head with nothing on the PS3.. and still lost...
- Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Okay, the /alpha/ screens you saw... were REALLY EARLY ALPHA! Guess what, a lot of companies probably don't even have their games looking atleast that polished in alpha, much less the finished version. So stop trying to down Bungie without reason. Their game will look much better than that in the final version.
- Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/10/arts/design/10game.html?ex=1328763600&en=f09fdbd5c6894b0d&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
- fetusburgers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whats the Galilean laser?
- dustysquareback, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Also called the Spartan Laser. It's a gaint shoulder mounted laser, you pull the trigger and an aiming beam shoots out for 3 seconds, then the main beam fires. Blows up any vehicle it hits.
- Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Think Death Star. Hold the trigger for 3 seconds, then it fires an instant beam of incendiary destruction guaranteed to make anything in it's path wish it had chosen a better place to be at that particular moment. Bungie said in one of the weekly updates that you get a sniper medal for hitting someone with it.
- aserer511, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2god bless toggle crouch vs. hold
- Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm a big fan of hold crouch. I'm really hoping they keep it as an option. I'm very much the kind of person who will hit crouch and not ever come back up, so I like to have it automatic, despite the wear that it certainly adds to my joystick.
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hahaha, I highly doubt it adds any significant wear to your "joystick" ;)
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm interested in what they will do for the marketing this time.
Meaning... in terms of an ARG. What they did for Halo 2 was amazing, and what's going on for NIN right now is just mindblowing.
I'm hoping we'll get something similar with Halo 3. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hummm... no button to enter vehicles on that list but it doesn't say what X does......I think X=Enter vehicles.
- dustysquareback, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No, RB is reload/enter vehicles/do random action. Say so right in the article.
- Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Everything that used to be X is now RB.
- radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2Halo is overhyped garbage. Some people saw it in the first version, others needed to learn about it by purchasing Halo 2.
Bungie's a Microsoft company now and Microsoft can't do anything right.- dustysquareback, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You sir, either never PLAYED either game, or sucked balls at them. Or you just love to be non-conformist at the expense of never enjoying the wonderful things that everyone else around you does. How sad. :|
Halo2 logs over 330,000 *unique* players on Xbox live EVERY day. Doesn't sound like over-hype to me. - Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm rather inclined to agree with dustysquareback. Halo CE was one of the greastest, if not THE greatest, game experiences of my life. Solid controls, and a severe lack of Keyboard and Mouse made it the clear choice for me, who can't even play the Sims with such a setup. Halo 2 was the essential online experience for Xbox Users, because it's matchmaking bordered on flawless for the time. There were certainly other things they could implement, but it was far beyond what the other game companies were putting in their games.
It also helps that the userbase for Halo 2 has withstood the years that the game has been out. Remember Unreal Championship? That game was dead after the first year. Unreal Championship 2 was dead in less than that. You have to make a good and lasting game for your game to be memorable on this market, and Bungie has nailed it. They'll nail it again with Halo 3. So why don't you go sit down with your (I'm going to make the assumption that you're a Sony fanboy) $600 waste and cry. MGS4 isn't going to topple Halo 3, and I have low hopes for Killzone 2 which is once again conspicuously absent. - badbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The first halo was irritating as *****.
You can't honestly say you didn't go through the library and think, "... when is this going to ***** end?"
OF course I'll get dugg down in a halo fanboy thread, but the fact remains that there are many parts that were irritating.
I mean, I bought my 360 a few months ago and just beat the library around christmas. That level was so irritating that I haven't picked it up since. Aside from that, the game is just a typical FPS, but with a really good story. - Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Heh, I hear you on the Library. It was easily the most annoying game experience I know of xDD The most forgettable part of the game. Along with Truth and Reconcilliation's inside I think those are the worst parts of the game (Aside from the fact that Bungie Reused levels.) But I really think they nailed it on the other levels. The chill you get on 343 Guilty Spark, the sheer awesome of having your own island to dominate on Silent Cartographer, down to the absolute awesomeness of the Maw. There were so many things that made up for the crappiness of the Library (which a lot of people liked, actually) that you couldn't hate Bungie for throwing it in there. It made sense as a level in the story, despite how irritating it was. (much more than the Library-esque level in Halo 2)
- radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I've played Halo 1 on a PC. It sucked. I hated the colors, the artwork, the sound effects and the graphics. I played to the level areas where you first drive a vehicle, got bored and deinstalled it.
Luckily, I didn't buy Halo. It was bundled with the Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS "Gamer" edition that I bought at the same time. It came with Halo, Half Life, Jedi Knights, a Splinter Cell title and some Tomb Raider version. Of those, Halo kept my interest the least.
I might bash Microsoft a lot but I make no apologies for it. I'm quite familiar with most of its products. - mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So anything Microsoft, or any subsidiaries thereof, produce is automatically crap?
Do you know the definition of 'prejudice'? - Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also... do you know the definition of "Console Game"? Halo wasn't made as a PC shooter. Play it on an Xbox and I think you'll have a little less harsh feeling toward it.
- dustysquareback, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You sir, either never PLAYED either game, or sucked balls at them. Or you just love to be non-conformist at the expense of never enjoying the wonderful things that everyone else around you does. How sad. :|
- Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hey guys.... this story actually exists further down. "Halo 3 FAQ Released!" Sorry to spoil the hyping, but it is a duplicate here. ;-;
- fuzzboxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the X button is going to be the Dash feature that was planned for Halo 2. Getting into Vehicles can be context sensitive.
- MacPOD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I know what the x button is, it is the button to throw the sheild grenade nothing special
- mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Except that we already know LB cycles grenades. Try again.
- MacPOD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My friend supposedly played the alpha and the sheild grenades were placed seperate onto the x button they may have changed I suppose.
- Spikekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"D-PAD: Used for sweet circular fighting game moves." Godlike.
- madmike759, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2who the ***** cares its only Halo 3 i mean God of War 2 is coming out in a couple of weeks and its supposed to be one the best games ever and no one really cares...whatever im going to dugg down idc
- jonesy827, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was announced earlier. As it says in the description of the Weekly Update, they have a quick once-over of the button scheme....
The X button was unknown... - Ductapemaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally, I don't have to be confused about the reload button between Gears of War and Halo...I get killed wayyy too much for that.
