- Godlike, on 12/21/2007, -3/+5Ah, the garden gnome.
This is more of a nod to humanity, perhaps sending the gnome was metaphor for connecting humanity to the universe, mankind for the first time taking steps to influence their greater destiny. Tthis is really the first time that the humans fight back against the combine using their own (limited) supertechnologies.- itsthebrod, on 12/21/2007, -1/+10Or maybe the developers just got high and watched a Travelocity commercial.

- GerrardIsLegend, on 12/21/2007, -8/+1I believe that applies to Halo a whole lot more than HL.

- houndeyex, on 12/21/2007, -21/+16Well he certainly won't be getting any cake, because that part was totally a lie.
- yohan, on 12/21/2007, -5/+28 HAHAAHAH not funny any more.
- superal1394, on 12/22/2007, -0/+6watch there be a cake next to the portal gun when you find it in EP3, yet when you try and interact with it, it disappears.
- Godlike, on 12/21/2007, -1/+13The cake is not actually a lie, the problem with the cake is that GlaDOS does not seem to fully comprehend that the death of the test subject in a fire and the eating of the cake afterwards are mutually exclusive. It seems such that, in the 'mind' of the A.I., if the future of the test subject as a living thing is planned, that this satisfies the 'moral' requirements that it would otherwise be in conflict with for its own designated process of destroying the test subject.
- Tyrghast, on 12/21/2007, -6/+1say WOOOOOOOOOOOSH. Now you can recognize the noise of clever writing flying right over your head.
- Godlike, on 12/21/2007, -0/+6My own, or the authors of Portal? Portal just BEGS to be analyzed in this sort of way! Trust me, the guys that wrote this game knew that there was a type of brain out there that all of this stuff would tickle...
I honestly don't see how anyone could just gloss over the game without considering something of this nature!
- Godlike, on 12/21/2007, -0/+6My own, or the authors of Portal? Portal just BEGS to be analyzed in this sort of way! Trust me, the guys that wrote this game knew that there was a type of brain out there that all of this stuff would tickle...

- oderdigg, on 12/21/2007, -2/+10There is a HL mod that will give you the Portal device. Never tried it but it looks cool.
- lowerlogic, on 12/21/2007, -1/+4the mod wasn't that great because the NPCs didn't interact with the portals at all
- Godlike, on 12/21/2007, -1/+6Think about this: Chel Vs. Gordon - ASHPoD vs. Gravity Gun
Gravity Gun wins hands down. All Gordon would have to do is wait for Chel to attempt to enter a portal or be standing in front of one, and fire objects into the other end of the portal which pop out the other side and collide with Chel or prevent her from entering the portal.
Though on the other hand, all Chel has to do is open a portal on the wall of a pit and fire one at Gordon's feet... Guess it would depend on the battlefield.
- Godlike, on 12/21/2007, -1/+6Think about this: Chel Vs. Gordon - ASHPoD vs. Gravity Gun

- wastedlife, on 12/21/2007, -30/+20"This site was created simply because I found that there were far too many people confused with the saga."
Ding ding ding! Give this guy a medal.
So at the end of Half Life, Gordon kills the big alien head thing, then boards a train. G-Man walks through an invisible door. The train arrives in City 17.
"Hey Gordon, it's me, Barney! Remember?"
Uh, no.
Vortigaunts are now friendly.
"Hey Gordon, it's me, Eli Vance! Remember?"
No.
Gravity Gun!!
Antlions, antlions, antlions.
The citadel blows up right in front of Alyx. Time freezes and the G-man starts talking to you.
Seriously, what?
Episode 1 starts with no explanation as to how you're both fine and at the bottom of the Citadel.
Seriously, what?
The thing is, I love the story even though I don't get it, certainly one of the best in video games and I can't wait for Episode 3.- Godlike, on 12/21/2007, -2/+6Barney is the security guard from Black Mesa that is in HL1. I believe he is the main character in "Blue Shift".
Vortigaunts are on both sides of the war, and their race was enslaved by the combine. The ones that fight WITH you are rebels, and there are no Vortigaunts fighting on the combine side on earth - they have presumably all joined the rebellion when they found like-minded rebels on earth.
Time freezes - the g-man presumably has some greater control over physics or has high technology that enables this. The 'starry warp' that you see at the end of 1 and 2 is a 'slow warp' of time where time passes very quickly in the real world but very slowly in the warp and this is where the g-man stores Gordon until he needs him again. At the end of HL2, the g-man saves Gordon and puts him in the warp and leaves Alyx to die. The vorti's, who presumably have the same power over space/time as the g-man does, stop time and save Alyx. They then pull Gordon from the warp and place you outside of the citadel, which episode 1 explains the reasons for.
I really love the half-life story, I just wish that it weren't so cliffhanger at times! It's like TV - I almost want to just stop playing and wait until the story has 2 or 3 more 'episodes' so that I don't have to live through a ton of 6-month cliffhangers! - Klarth, on 12/21/2007, -1/+5Oh ***** guys the storyline isn't immediately explained. Whatever are we going to do?
Seriously, that attitude makes about as much sense as not watching past the first three episodes of Lost because there are unexplained events.- grumbel, on 12/21/2007, -2/+2The problem isn't that they aren't immediately explained, the problem is that there is a very good chance that they will *never* be explained or heck, even if they are it will end up in a total mess. Remember X-files? It was fun while it was running, but one "not immediately explained"-thing after another and when the series was over it was a total random mess. And yeah, that is exactly the reason why I refuse to watch Lost, I just don't have any hope for that ever arriving at a satisfying confusion.
- scubasteve377, on 12/22/2007, -1/+1The writers of Lost are making it up as they go along. SShhhh, don't tell anybody!
- grumbel, on 12/21/2007, -2/+2The problem isn't that they aren't immediately explained, the problem is that there is a very good chance that they will *never* be explained or heck, even if they are it will end up in a total mess. - BugMeNot2, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3"Episode 1 starts with no explanation as to how you're both fine and at the bottom of the Citadel. "
At the beginning of Episode One, it is clearly shown that the vortigaunts save you and Alyx. - pegisys, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3I was just telling a friend that HL makes you discover the story, it is getting told around you all the time you just have to pay attention to it since there are no real cut-scenes to feed you plot points. If you just listen to every radio and tv feeds and listen to what everyone says the put 1 and 2 together.
I looked over the site and it looks as if it is trying to pass off a few things that are theory as fact but I think it is a good list for anyone new to HL and want to catch up
- Godlike, on 12/21/2007, -2/+6Barney is the security guard from Black Mesa that is in HL1. I believe he is the main character in "Blue Shift".
- DreKor, on 12/21/2007, -2/+49You didn't remember Barney? He was right there on the opening train ride for the original game pounding on a door. How could you miss him?
Also, Blue Shift.- wastedlife, on 12/21/2007, -1/+11It was 5 years before and he opened the door for you at the start.
- TremorX, on 12/21/2007, -10/+3...and was at the front desk once you went through the door. And was in various hallways.
Also, he was never named in the first game. Basically Valve tried to shoehorn characters into a game series that started with essentially none. It's sloppy and disorienting.- pegisys, on 12/21/2007, -1/+10all the cops were Barney, all the black scientist were Eli, all bald white scientist were Kleiner, and all white scientist with hair were Magnusson. I know there were multiple copies of them but they are pretty recognizable :)
- Godlike, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3What would you have suggested that they do? Just throw in characters that have no history whatsoever? The continuity established by using recognizable (if if not easily) figures does the game and the overall story a LOT of good. It makes it something engaging rather than turning it into one of those movies where the sequel has nothing at all to do with the original.
- TremorX, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1But that's exactly what they did! There are only really 3 "characters" being recycled... there was no Mossman, Alyx, Magnuson, Breen, etc, yet they all behave like they were present in the first game. Other than Gordan Freeman and the unnamed G-Man, and the name "Black Mesa" dropped a few times, it's TOTALLY one of those stories where the sequel and the original hardly have anything to do with each other.
- therightclique, on 12/21/2007, -1/+4Yeah, but back then stories were simply not part of first person shooters. The fact that they were able to reconcile that is pretty cool. Yes, there are almost zero similarities between both games. The only way that would matter is if HL2 sucked, and it absolutely did not suck.
- DreKor, on 12/21/2007, -1/+2nothing to do with each other... except for a cohesive plot line
- TremorX, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1But that's exactly what they did! - EruLabs, on 12/22/2007, -1/+1The reason they called him "barney" was because of the very first alpha for Half-Life. It features a character running around with a (shotgun?) weapon, blasting barney the purple dinosaurs to hell. They slowly modified the game engine from there, but the "ai_barney" remained the moniker for the entity in the world-builder (hammer).
Clearly, i've played way to much HL/CS/HLDM/TFC/BS/OF/NS/TS/HL2/HL2ep1/HL2ep2/Portal/HL2DM/CS:S/GYS...
Ill stop there.- cmezak, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1off topic, I know, but wasn't there some kind of cheat code for Doom that would turn enemies into Barney the Dinosaur? Reading your post just stirred some weird memories of that.
- Godlike, on 12/23/2007, -0/+1There was a mod.
- cmezak, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1off topic, I know, but wasn't there some kind of cheat code for Doom that would turn enemies into Barney the Dinosaur? Reading your post just stirred some weird memories of that.
- Shakermaker, on 12/21/2007, -2/+41Wasn't barney the security guard(s) in Half-life?
- rwmnau, on 12/21/2007, -1/+5Yes - he was the security guard who lets you through a few doors in the original, and he's also the one from whose perspective you play in Blue Shift.
- dungbeetle, on 12/21/2007, -19/+3I just hope they finally give Gordon a personality or something in 3. A story finally materialized in Ep1 and 2 but still Gordon has no personality to make you care one way or the other about him. I'm a bit tired of the floating camera, silent protangonist, approach they have used with this game and many others. Halflife is great, but you can only carry a story for so far with a character you can't get attached to.
- Antyrael, on 12/21/2007, -1/+19I disagree. The approach they've used for half-life makes me feel like I _am_ Gordon Freeman. The moment they start making him talk, they ruin that experience.
The story is entirely from his point of view. Other comments say things like "I don't understand why suddenly I'm safe at the bottom of the citadel" - well guess what, neither does Gordon. That's part of the magic of the game.- Zapkiller, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2......I'm Gordon Freeman...... :(..
- Godlike, on 12/21/2007, -1/+14So, Chel and Gordon walk into a bar and the bartender says, "What'll it be?"
Gordon looks at the bartender.
Chel looks at the bartender.
((that uh... that's the end of the joke))- therightclique, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1that's a pretty ***** joke.
- Godlike, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3You sort of have to imagine the scene to find it funny at all...
- therightclique, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1that's a pretty ***** joke.
- nickj6282, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1I am Gordon Freeman....I mean Spartacus...whatever...
- Antyrael, on 12/21/2007, -1/+19I disagree. The approach they've used for half-life makes me feel like I _am_ Gordon Freeman. The moment they start making him talk, they ruin that experience.
- HydrogenOxide, on 12/21/2007, -12/+8Anyone else think that eventually Gordon turns into Gman and is thrown back into the past?
- dungbeetle, on 12/21/2007, -5/+2My guess is the reason GMan looks like Gordon is because he copied the way he looks so he could communicate with Gordon.
- saltinekracka20, on 12/21/2007, -5/+4MAN, I just made that connection last night! How crazy would that be? I also thought the fact that Gordan's last name is "FREE-MAN" is an interesting play on the fact that he is seemingly the only one not under Combine control. I love subtleties.
- jonshipman, on 12/21/2007, -1/+2Read raising the bar. He's named after two scientists.
- saltinekracka20, on 12/21/2007, -2/+1link? And the pronoun "he" you use is referring to the G-Man? Still dont see how this disproves the G-Man=Gordan freeMAN theory.
- Godlike, on 12/21/2007, -2/+2Where, oh where, does the G-man get his name? I cannot remember...
- Anliz, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3G-Man is an old slang name for Government Man. It has nothing to do with the game, its just something people called him so we didnt have to refer to him by saying the guy with a blue suit and tie holding a briefcase.
- saltinekracka20, on 12/21/2007, -2/+1link? And the pronoun "he" you use is referring to the G-Man? Still dont see how this disproves the G-Man=Gordan freeMAN theory.

- systemflaw, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1been waiting for someone to do this.
- sirmasterboy, on 12/21/2007, -12/+4This entire saga website however cool, is just one persons view on what is happening in the story. Lots of the gaps are filled in with information that the guy just made up. Such as the info about who the gman might be. A problem with it is that they seemed to just insert Aperture Science like it was always there in the story the whole time. I can guarantee that even while writing half-life 2, the writers had never considered that part of the story. I don't think you should just change a story midway through like that.
- navster15, on 12/21/2007, -0/+7They didn't change anything mid-way. The whole Aperture Science story had no relevance to the Half Life saga until they mentioned Borealis in Episode II. They are merely filling in back story that further fleshes out the Half Life universe.
- GreyICE, on 12/21/2007, -1/+4Once again, the entire story is told from Gordon's perspective. Gordon has no idea who Aperature Science is (or at most a vague idea they're competitors with Black Mesa). They've never impacted his story at all. So since the entire history is personal, they've just never had a reason to show up... until they became important to the personal history of another character. And possibly Gordon's, if he gets the 'Gun of pure win'
- Godlike, on 12/21/2007, -2/+1Maybe you'll find someone else to help you...
Maybe Black Mesa...
(That was a joke, ha ha, fat chance.)

- spawnfree, on 12/21/2007, -1/+8here it is:
crab battle. - GerrardIsLegend, on 12/21/2007, -2/+2Hell, how about one for Halo? Metal Gear is seriously convoluted but at least playing that I had an idea of what was going on. During Halo 3 I pretty much had no idea except to kill Covenant and Flood.
- Nobi-Wan, on 12/21/2007, -0/+9Play Halo 1 and 2. Do you also jump in at the end of movies and complain about the plot?
- macweirdo42, on 12/21/2007, -0/+10If the G-man wanted the super portal to open, allowing Combine troops to pour onto Earth, why was he so insistent that Gordan make sure that Alyx reach White Forest safely? Alyx had the information the resistance needed to shut down the super portal.
Oh, and forget the portal gun, I really hope GLaDOS makes an appearance in Episode 3.- theotherbastard, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4You just sorta get the idea from the G-Man's role in HL1 that he's testing you for something. Like the whole thing is someone's sick idea of a job application. But, I never got the impression he was on either side or even necessarily for the enslavement of Earth. Really, the only time he actually interfered with anything (in the games that I've played, at least) was in Opposing Force. (Apart from the plucking and dropping of Gordon & Co. when he pleases)
- alkajazz, on 12/21/2007, -2/+1G-MAN Wanted to know the location of the Borealis.
- GerrardIsLegend, on 12/21/2007, -0/+8G-Man doesn't really have a "side", I seem to remember him making that clear.
- l0ne, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1He clearly wants the Borealis to be used (remember the "prepare for unforeseen consequences") -- he wants to open a portal to the Combine Overworld; if he can't do it with the Combine superportal, he can lure the resistance into attacking using the Borealis' portal tech.
- cmezak, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3I agree that the G-man doesn't seem to have a "side" of his own. I wonder if he has actually been changing his goals substantially during the course of events - completely unbeknownst to us, of course, as his actions make little sense to us anyway.
The pet theory of the Gman that I entertain when I've had a bit to drink is that he is attracted to Gordon because of his uncanny fighting abilities and his seemingly unique identity in the halflife universe as someone who can actually move things forward . . . all of which is a consequence of the fact that halflife is a video game and gordon is the protagonist avatar for the player. The gman somehow realizes this fact - he knows that he and his world is fictitious, but he also knows that by virtue of that fact: he can manipulate his world - and the center of that world, i.e. gordon - as he pleases. This is some weird post-modern *****, but its infinite feedback loop nature makes it more satisfying to me than any closed-world traditional plot would be.
- Volred, on 12/21/2007, -9/+1Here is a good place to starting learning about the MGS series:

- CrudeDarkness, on 12/21/2007, -6/+2I hope they make one on Metal gear.
- MerryMortician, on 12/21/2007, -2/+3You have to see The Mist as well.. it is the movie based on the short story for which hl2 was loosely inspired by.
- CollapseControl, on 12/21/2007, -1/+2I read about that but what Half-Life takes from The Mist is never shown in the movie. It is just based on an idea of opening up another a dimension.
But The Mist is a great movie and Half-Life does kick ass. - spawnfree, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1hl1
- MerryMortician, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1yes.. i mean hl in general.. just so used to typing hl2 i guess.
- alkajazz, on 12/21/2007, -2/+1The Mist is a horrible movie.

- Treshnell, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3Really good site. I may play the game and follow the general storyline, but there's just usually so much going on it's hard to see everything.
- CollapseControl, on 12/21/2007, -7/+1I highly enjoy the Half-Life games. I haven't gotten to Episode 1&2 yet because I'm replaying part 2 & I got tons of other games to play.
Half-Life 1 was my favorite game for the PS2 and is the only thing I miss since getting rid of that console years ago.- jonshipman, on 12/21/2007, -0/+18It is a little known fact that HL was also available on the PC
- CollapseControl, on 12/21/2007, -5/+0Most of the time I talk about Half-Life being my favorite PS2 game I do mention that it is a port of a PC game, but being of what website I am on right now it should be a given.
Also, I don't play PC games, never have, never will. I grew up on consoles and that is where I will stay.
I'm currently playing the Orange Box on the 360, and I beat HL2 last year on the Xbox. BTW- Slackdragon, on 12/21/2007, -0/+14It's sad to think people play such wonderful games on consoles. Pared down and aided by aim-bots because of the retarded interface of analog thumb sticks. Team Fortress 2 on consoles has teams half the size of PC teams.
Sad.
I weep for my console strapped brethren.- CollapseControl, on 12/21/2007, -11/+0I'll let you know when anyone cares what you think you big racist.....

- Scrappy1850, on 12/21/2007, -0/+5they put HL on PS2?!
- CollapseControl, on 12/21/2007, -4/+1Yup, and it was my favorite game for the PS2. The PS2 was just a DVD player for me basically, except for the GTA games but I prefer them on the Xbox.
- yournamehere, on 12/21/2007, -0/+15you dare to come here and admit to playing HL on a CONSOLE!!???!!?
- CollapseControl, on 12/21/2007, -3/+3you dare to care what and how people play video games ?!?!?!?!
- cheeseron, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1the dreamcast version is better. Hell, Blue Shift was made for it!
- CollapseControl, on 12/21/2007, -4/+1I thought the Dreamcast version never got released, it got pulled a few weeks before launch. Unless you are one of those nerds who go out of your way to download it or whatever.
- jonshipman, on 12/21/2007, -0/+18It is a little known fact that HL was also available on the PC
- Kafluke, on 12/21/2007, -3/+6Portal by far is the most enjoyable game that I've played in a great long time.
- Cannon590A, on 12/24/2007, -0/+0The humor was great, and it was pretty challenging. Too short, but a great game.
- hello_world, on 12/21/2007, -0/+11Reading the story guide makes me think that I'm playing the wrong game. The Half-Life series biggest flaw (for me at least, cos I know a lot of people love the series because of this) is that we'd have to really work hard to get the story details. I mean, most of them are just there in front of us, but i think I've just been brought up spoon-fed.
- lul101, on 12/21/2007, -0/+8I don't get the story behind GMan. Is he good or evil? Why would he give the Chrystal to Black Mesa even though he knew things would go wrong with the experiment? From eps2 we learn that GMan told Eli to "prepare for unforeseen consequences" before the experiment began.
- superal1394, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4There is no mention in this article on if the resistance new Gordon was coming. Eli seemed to realize Gordon had no idea what was going on, so that implies he knew where Gordon was. The G-Man's influence with the other characters would be a great thing to explore.
- isunktheship, on 12/21/2007, -5/+0The portal device seems like it will definitely be a big part of a future episode.
Also if gman is so strong why can't he just help stop the problems in the first place? This could be taken to some extreme, saying that the game follows Christian ideals, in that God (gman) is always there helping you complete tasks, whether you realize it or not.
Hrmm.. time for me to write a book and make the big bucks.- yournamehere, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3yeah, if it wasn't such a stupid premise

- smergs, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3I don't know where I've been but, I didn't even know about this site. I still haven't played episode 1 or 2 yet. And my wife is getting me the Orange Box for Christmas. I'll have to go back and read through this site so that I don't have to go back and play 1 and 2 again to refresh my memory on the story.
- HydrogenOxide, on 12/21/2007, -0/+34What about the entry for Team Fortress two?
2007- People kill each other in CTF combat. Everyone dies because NOBODY TARGETS THE ***** MEDIC - Epik, on 12/21/2007, -1/+2I always thought I was missing out on some huge storyline since I didn't play HL from the beginning and pay attention to everything.
Turns out not much has happened. Not as much as I thought had happened, anyway. But now I'm excited for HL3. - lidong, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1The G-man. I've been puzzled by him for 10 years..
- JonyMill, on 12/21/2007, -0/+6I think it would be cool if the Combine's overwatch AI you hear rambling on and on during HL2 is actually adapted AI technology from apature science.
They are the same voice actor anyways. - tmattoneill, on 12/21/2007, -7/+1site lame in nearly infinite ways. however, the most infinite is the ripping of the star wars prequel typeface/layout (http://members.shaw.ca/halflifestory/assets/story_ ... and the second most is still using Netscape (do Diggers even remember what Netscape was?) favico
- slowmotiony, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4Anyone could point me to a wallpaper version of that thumbnail?
- talkingwires, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1I think it's from the HL2 concept art in "Raising The Bar", a book on HL2's development and art direction which was published when the game was first released.
I have no idea why the only copy on Amazon is going for $100: http://www.amazon.com/Half-Life-2-Raising-David-Ho ...- talkingwires, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Nevermind. I just checked my copy, and it's not in there. Maybe it's concept art from EP1? I've never seen it before, but would like a wallpaper-sized version, too.

- Krumm, on 12/21/2007, -0/+6It still doesn't explain Dr Magnussen, or why he's introduced like we already know him.
What was wrong with Kleiner - why not Kleiner Devices for busting striders?- dronkmunk, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3look at their names. Magnussen - Magnificent, huge (ego-wise)
and Kleiner - Klein = Small, diminuitive in german - Swil, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4They needed a character in the resistance that actually conflicted with Gordon. When you have scenes in any story where everyone just gets along well it's poor storytelling.
I think it worked. Made all the stuff at White Forest far more interesting, would have been a whole lot of boring exposition otherwise.
As for him being introduced like we already know him, he wasn't. He was given quite a thorough introduction to the story - he was just treated like everyone else in the story already knew him (including Gordon), cos they did. - rmeddy, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Magnussen was a bit of a douchebag, A great addition to the cast.
- Tetraca, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1You do already know him in a way, from Half-Life 1. You've got three character models for scientists: One was like Dr. Kleiner, another like Eli Vance, and the third, Dr. Magnussen. He also references the microwave in the lounge you see in Black Mesa. If you pressed the buttons on it you could make the microwave casserole explode.
- dronkmunk, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3look at their names. Magnussen - Magnificent, huge (ego-wise)
- Immune, on 12/21/2007, -3/+1Wow, I didn't relise (Other than TF2) that the orange box was so connected.
- superal1394, on 12/22/2007, -1/+4were you awake while playing?
- AZRoboto, on 12/22/2007, -4/+1Who would've guessed that there's a very complex story involving aliens invading Earth in Half-Life 2.
Seriously. I'm halfway through Episode 2 and I never even would've thought the Combine were alien and forced those Xen guys to Earth. I wish there was a summation of the events prior to HL2 in the game so we knew what we were playing... - pivovy, on 12/22/2007, -1/+1Portal is delicious and moist.
