- inactive, on 02/26/2009, -0/+58I don't mind unlocking characters. I just feel that the final boss is uber cheap and the computer likes to cheat me from a win.
- OneManArmy, on 02/26/2009, -5/+27dude has some valid points imo
- C4Strife, on 02/26/2009, -1/+23For those of you who don't know David is an avid SF player, and was once a world ranked fighter. Look him up on youtube and you can see him beast, though he did lose to the great Daigo/God: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pS5peqApgUA
- Mayday408, on 02/26/2009, -7/+27I kinda disagree.
I guess if you played SF4 in the arcade already, then playing 1p first to get all the characters could be seen as annoying.
For someone like me who hasn't played it before, it gave me the chance to learn the new characters and system.
Someone tell Abel to stop rolling and throwing me please. - NewPunk, on 02/26/2009, -4/+19Sagat and Seth are cheap ass *****.
- pogfreak, on 02/26/2009, -1/+15Lets break this down:
No brainer critiques:
-Button Config screen
-Ranked match nonsense (host can kick in lobby, variable round lengths, non blind char selection)
-Character unlockables
If you disagree with these, you are an idiot. Or you just really don't care about fighting games. w/e, just admit your ignorance or indifference and move on. To people who play a lot of games these are important things that were just done wrong. Not "a different way" but just flat out "the wrong way". Its not even worth debating, either you get it or you dont.
The "wall of skill" complaints:
-2 button throws + "intentional" kara bug
-Really hard link combos. Like, really hard even for street fighter.
-Ultra + ex Special inputs being too similiar / easy to get one when you mean the other.
-Harder inputs like qcf x 2+ppp, ppp everywhere, fei and cammy old inputs, etc.
-Press down everytime you get knocked down.
-clumnsy FA cancel system (2 cancels, could just be PPP or something).
Sirlin makes really good points about all of these, but ultimately it comes down to how much "single player skill" (skills you develop in training mode, independant of reacting to your opponent) do you want in a fighting game. Sirlin argue that the *real* game, the game that experts who can do every move and every combo flawlessly play, is what really matters, and execution difficulty just gets in the way of reaching that "fun". Street fighter is a very fun game at the highest levels where it becomes a game of strategy and mind games instead of dexterity excercises. Sirlin wishes, at the very least, *to not purposefully turn up the skill knob to 11* unless it actually adds something to the game, instead of just making it complex for the sake of making it complex and difficult, and hes saying Street fighter IV cranks up the skill nob at almost every chance it gets.
Thats the best I can put his stance.
But... people disagree. IMO the japanese (and other) hardcore audiences *want* very hard to do moves that take a long time of training (alone) to perfect. To them it makes the game more interesting and deep and just flat out its what they want. Hard-to-execute games certainly have done well in the past especially in japan, so to them its just business as usual. Some may argue that the risk vs reward in hard to do combos w/ high damage vs easy combos w/ low damage is worth keeping. I think you can work risk/reward into the game in other ways, but its a valid point for sure.
Thats the debate as I see it... just think about whats actually being said instead of making "hes just jeoulous" or "omg xxx is so cheap" comments! - veriix, on 02/26/2009, -1/+15Really? No comment on the annoying anouncer you can't turn off?
- Archcoder, on 02/26/2009, -3/+16He's Russian, not French.
- twinegarden, on 02/26/2009, -0/+12I agree, I was getting pretty pissed after succombing victim to the spinning power driver over and over. With some characters I could beat his ass handedly but with others (Sakura) I got pile driven over and over.
I'm a noob though. Still, I really like the game, even if I get stomped 14 out of 15 ranked games I play. - haterofps3, on 02/26/2009, -0/+12Bob Sagat?
- pogfreak, on 02/26/2009, -2/+13A) That doesn't make it "right" or "a good game design decision".
B) No street fighter game has ever had unlockable characters. Aside from maybe Akuma in ST arcade. Much less 2/5ths of the roster being inaccessible. - shuckl4k, on 02/26/2009, -0/+11I'm glad I'm not alone. I felt ashamed to have my ass handed to me so blatantly by Abel and his ***** throws on goddamn EASIEST mode.
- dccabs, on 02/26/2009, -0/+10no you get access to more than half of the characters to start with including all the ones from street fighter 2. You have progress through the game to unlock the new ones.
the game is awesome by the way. - twinegarden, on 02/26/2009, -1/+11I don't see myself playing SF2HD Remix anymore unless I'm feeling too lazy to put SF4 into the disc drive. I'm really enjoying SF4.
- decibelx, on 02/26/2009, -0/+10"Whiiiiiich of these fighters will prove the old axiom today?"
- MWeather, on 02/26/2009, -5/+15"I'm fully aware that casual players love unlocks, and that's why non-essential content like costumes, movies, icons, and titles are all perfectly fine to give as rewards for playing 1p content. But the *characters*? This steps on the toes of those wanting to play the multiplayer game by making our first experience with the game a very boring one."
Has this man NEVER played a fighting game? You almost always have to unlock characters. This is not new. - ScorpioDragon, on 02/26/2009, -0/+9If you want to unlock everybody quickly. Set the game to EASIEST and 1 round.
- ephekt, on 02/26/2009, -0/+9You're doing something wrong.
- ephekt, on 02/26/2009, -0/+8No, you're just a scrub.
- koonchu, on 02/26/2009, -1/+9And based on your comment, I'll add you to that list, *****.
- cosmotic, on 02/26/2009, -0/+8Thank's for liking to blog spam! The posted article is 90% quotes from the original post at http://www.sirlin.net/blog/2009/2/22/a-few-things- ...
- geoken, on 02/26/2009, -0/+8So I guess players who could pull of their ultra 100% of the time are just really lucky??
- jonnyeh, on 02/26/2009, -1/+9Or the really bad Japanese Nsync music?
- solid12345, on 02/26/2009, -0/+8The illest ***** with a cardigan eyepatch.
- YouRookies, on 02/26/2009, -5/+12LOL, What's wrong kids? You guys have been spoiled with easy games this generation. Welcome to the world of fighting games.
- ephekt, on 02/26/2009, -0/+7"While he has some points, I can't help but think there's some sour grapes because the wind has been totally taken out of the sails of "his" version of SF. "
Even though you make no good points, I can't help but think there's a brain in there somewhere.
"As pretty as it was, the remix was still too "2D" for modern tastes and is not going to get the Halo generation as interested as the 3D characters in SFIV."
Catering to Halo players is a phenomenally stupid idea when you're trying to recreate a proven strategical classic. Making ST 3D would've ruined the game for anyone actually good at it. It's not exactly a good idea to piss off your fanbase by catering to the lowest common denominator. - DreamVsPs2, on 02/26/2009, -0/+7No lobbies is my only complaint.
- CapeKid, on 02/26/2009, -0/+7Play your own music ingame via XMB or the xbox media stuff. Problem solved.
- tgc1, on 02/26/2009, -0/+7Welcome to almost every friggin street fighter game. The end boss is always a mother *****. I remember trying to beat Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo on the hardest difficulty setting. I nearly flung myself out a window I was so mad. And i'm not half bad either.
It was one of those controller breaking types of thing. I never did break my controllers, but holy ***** did I want to. - tgc1, on 02/26/2009, -0/+7"Tiger... Tiger.... Tiger.... Tiger Uppercut...."
Repeat times Infinity
// sidenote -- that actually works to your advantage, his moves are easy to predict, and he's often programmed to be a retard and will lose to a few well placed low kicks and fireballs. - protogenxl, on 02/26/2009, -1/+7I hate unlocking characters thankfully Guilty Gear stopped locking characters long ago
- pogfreak, on 02/26/2009, -2/+7How is that relevant? You aren't intelligent enough to engage his points, so you attack him. If you don't care about the subject then why care what he has to say in the first place? Go troll else where.
- Narishma, on 02/26/2009, -0/+5The console versions of Alpha 3 have a lot of locked characters.
- ephekt, on 02/26/2009, -0/+5I'm betting on intellectual deficiency. I love how people always drag out the 15 year comment, as if the game hasn't been played competitively for that entire time. Also, HD Remix is not buggy. People need to learn to form arguments.
- awtripp, on 02/26/2009, -0/+5Sure, but they should make the characters unlockable through multiplayer aspects as well -- like Super Smash Bros does with some of its characters. You know, play 50 matches and unlock a dude or something.
- ephekt, on 02/26/2009, -0/+5Like forgot
- geoken, on 02/26/2009, -0/+5Just duck and use really quick light kicks. You'll catch him as soon as he exits his roll.
- Larssonk22, on 02/26/2009, -1/+699% of what Sirlin wrote on his blog http://www.sirlin.net/ I completely agree with. I'm not one of those players who has to unlock every single costume (looking at you Kasumi DOA fanboys) I just head straight for xboxlive. I've been an SF fan since 94 when Fei Long first hit the scene, and here I had to unlock him. Its fair enough for character like Akuma (even though in previous games he has been a norm), Gouken and Seth should require unlocking, but there is no logic making Fei Long, Sakura or DAN!!! unlockables.
My biggest gripe though is the ultra/ex/supers commands overlapping. I use M.bison and 8 out of 10 times attempting to do his ultracombo results in a teleport or soemthing else, teleport isnt so bad if im doing a reversal but still...
The game is cheap even on easiest setting took me over an hour with Dan to beat the game, I ended up rebooting the game and magically getting a perfect against Seth !!WTF!!!
Other than that the game is awesome, I love challenge mode those combos are hard!! - jonnyeh, on 02/26/2009, -0/+5Not the menu music?
- saegiru, on 02/27/2009, -0/+4I remember the good ol' days with the original SFII for SNES. I got so pissed at that game one day that I pulled it out and threw it against the wall. The entire casing broke into pieces, but the actual game chip still worked. When I would play it, it looked like I was playing a big stick of ram.
Discs nowadays can't survive that kind of beating... sigh. - TheXboxReview, on 02/26/2009, -0/+4SFIV is an amazing game, I've been playing it on & offline a lot. My only problem is that they left Dee-Jay and T-Hawk out.
- ephekt, on 02/26/2009, -0/+4Oh no, a zoning character plays a zoning game!
If you're consistently predicting a Sagat's zoning game then he obviously sucks. Sagat's actually pretty good at close quarters in 4 with all his cancels, links and ridiculous priority on tiger knees.
- ephekt, on 02/26/2009, -0/+4You're just proving how bad you are. Bison was broken in CE, good in ST, high tier in CvS2 and is high tier in SF4 as well.
- OafBoaster, on 02/26/2009, -1/+4Apparently a lot of people since it was on for a number of seasons and is heavily syndicated.
"While you were over there mixing metaphors like a Cuisinart I've had a breakthrough!" - Niles - ephekt, on 02/27/2009, -0/+3Nobody is forcing you to play Remix mode. Nobody good does.
Also, the online system -ranked matches specifically- works fine for me on PS3. - platipuz, on 02/26/2009, -1/+4If you are teleporting with bison when you are trying to ultra with him, you just need to learn how to input. Those two moves are very different commands.
- whoreable, on 02/26/2009, -0/+3If you play any type of video games ( competitively) , I suggest you go to http://www.sirlin.net/ptw/ and read this guy's (from the article) book. It really offers great insight to the upper tiers of video game play.
- TheXboxReview, on 02/26/2009, -2/+5Yeah, that's because the game slowly learns your techniques. So when you rebooted, it had forgotten all your tricks.
- iiiichaos, on 02/26/2009, -0/+3You can throw him while he's rolling. He's easy to beat that way.
- Larssonk22, on 02/27/2009, -0/+3I suck at ST really.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzGDt-W3bgw
