- pr1me4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+116Barbie Horse Adventure isn't that easy I don't know why everyone thinks that.
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -8/+71Playing through the game on medium level nets you all of the songs. It takes like 2.5 hours. You'll be short the cash to buy about 5 bonus songs, and that just takes playing through the first two stages one more time.
I did it with no fails in 2.5 hours, and I've never played the game outside of store displays before (though the fact that I play actual guitar on a moderate level does help) If you really can't do medium, even just barely making it through with practice, you should try an easier game, like Barbie's Horse Adventure.
The only thing that might be hard to unlock is some of the secret guitars and achievements, and I would hardly call different guitar images a necessity to the game, and achievements are supposed to be hard. - Charlesbian, on 10/12/2007, -5/+61wow i HATE how digg changes the article you are viewing after you log in. I meant to comment on the IRS losing 400+ laptops. Now I look overreactionary. Oh well better milk this while im here. FREE TIBET!
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43Whaddya know? In TFA, they list the codes to unlock all songs. So if you leave your memory card at home, just use these cheats (which should be trivial to find via google):
BYOROYRYRYRYRYRY - US / NTSC Unlock All
BYOROYBYBYBYBYBY - Pal Unlock All
This is exactly what cheat codes are for -- letting you fast forward through things you've already done, and allowing people who don't like playing through the content the way it was written play though on their own terms. - iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -13/+51but suppose you bring the game over to a friend's house for a party, but forget the memory card. No one at the party is going to want to wait 2.5 hours for you to unlock everything.
There are some situations where you just need everything unlocked immediately , especially in multiplayer. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I think the problem is, when you view digg articles in multiple tabs, a cookie gets set to whatever you viewed last. So even if you hit login on the IRS article, if you opened *this* article in a tab after that one, digg'll take you back here. It's pretty dumb. Really oughta take you back to wherever you came from.
Oh, and, about that "free tibet"? I'll take it! - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23"While this is all somewhat pertinent , your middle paragraph was unnecessary and condescending, thus making your WHOLE point invalid. Congrats, you lose the Internet.."
lol. Hi, welcome to digg. Oh, and by the way -- being condescending doesn't invalidate your point. It just makes you a bit of a dick. Oh, and, you'll find a lot of people here are dicks.
Enjoy your stay.
Back on topic: I doubt I would have liked guitar hero nearly as much if it wasn't for the way the unlockable content is set up. While the "But what if you bring it to a party, and forget your memory card?" argument does bring up a good point, isn't there a cheat code for that? If not, there really should be... - klinsek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Why are people so afraid of a challenge? This has been a constant complaint of mine lately about games. I am tired of spending 50-60$ on games and I beat them in 2-3 days. What happened to the days of old, when it took you (with the help of friends even) like all of your summer break to beat that NES game? We now live in a game age where people actually pay extra money for that strategy guide to beat the game faster. Why not get the most out of your money and enjoy the satisfaction of completing the game on your own? Ahh, kids these days. :P
- kylesellers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Wow, that was the best save ever.
- mjolnerr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Why would someone want a game where you just have a bunch of things to do without a goal or reward? Congratulations you played all the songs real good. Would you go to work if you weren't going to get paid? That's slavery my friend. Which therefore, Guitar Hero 2 without unlockables violates the 13th amendment and anybody who wants Guitar Hero two without unlockable content is anti-american!
- Pyroteq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Kids these days are pussies. Back in the day if I wanted to beat Sonic on Sega, I had to sit down for half a day and if I got game over I had to start over. There was no codes, no saves, just a few check points and extra lives to collect. "Waaah, I have to unlock the songs before I play them"...
Ugh. - swiftekho, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Seeing as I just literally got the game yesterday, I am trying to get 5 stars on all medium songs for a secret guitar. I find it fun trying to nail that one part that's been raping you and keeping you from 5 stars... Especially with games like Guitar Hero and DDR, if you don't have to unlock content, then it turns into a game that would be strictly for parties (aka nothing you would play on your own)
It would be like getting Halo 3 and demanding that the game be beat for you already... Stupid - dpl_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This is the lamest controversy ever.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Insanely stupid editorial. It's like him asking the makers of Starcraft, Resident Evil or Doom why all the weapons weren't readily available, and that having to play and get constantly killed to get to them is false advertising. The guy just sucks at GH. That's the whole point of his editorial.
- mtrip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What exactly is the 'solid story' behind Mario? You could randomly jumble those levels and it would still make sense, which is 'reach the end and grab the flag pole.'
- mtrip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5All games are set up like this. When you play Mario, you can't play level two and so on without beating the first level, and if there's a level you can't beat? Guess what, all that 'content' further on is unreachable. Same with Mario, God of War, Halo, basically every game ever made.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7In my day we played with rocks and sticks and they didn't have any cheat codes, and we liked it that way!!! We were also barefoot when we walked 10 miles to school, which was uphill both ways in the snow.
- atmofunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5purely subjective
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"i don't know about you, but i don't see many people walking around the streets carrying their mini guitars around."
Heh, I was at a party where this one guy totally did exactly that. He had his guitar controllers on his back in a little backpack for half the party. I was like, "Wow, I love guitar hero, but that's takin' it to a whole new level right there....". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7CONTROVERSY!
- lunarworks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6While I do appreciate games with challenge, and some games I go through all the motions to unlock the secrets, I have another challenge in my life: College.
Sometimes you just wanna play the game, not go through the chores of unlocking. - spacecadetjuno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ok see here is how it works, If you want the challenge don't use the code. It's not like they are forcing it down your throat its a code. It should not bother anybody that those who don't wanna go through use the cheat and are happy. It's a fun game to play unlocking or no unlocking.
- DurtyJ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is so god damn pathetic. Games are supposed to be a challenge, and yet some retards start having a hissy fit cause they actually have to play the game.
Hell, you know what, we should sue the creators of the original Super Mario because every level is locked to me because I can't get past level 1. Now THAT is just unfair. - getliquified, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4wtf having everything unlocked from the get go would ruin the game
there is nothing to look forward to
half the fun of playing a game is getting new content...which is what unlocking content does - nipterink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@iluvatar:
there is some truth to the memory card idea, but honestly, if having all your songs meant so much to you when you brought the game over, you probably wouldn't forget. not to mention, the most common thing is for people to come to the location that already has guitar hero. i don't know about you, but i don't see many people walking around the streets carrying their mini guitars around. - MechaFenris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I appreciate a challenge, however I do not appreciate artificial "difficulty" put in by inadequate game designers (things like sparse save points, incredibly rigid time trials, and AI that never makes a "mistake" and plays like a pro no matter what level you're on). Test Drive (the recent one from atari) had AI cars that could always accelerate faster and turn better than you. It was a chore to play levels where you were at an acceleration disadvantage... because that meant you had to be super excellent at cornering if you were to catch up (not pass, which was a herculean effort in itself) to the AI cars. I never finished that game... and probably wouldn't have bought a sequel, had it been released for just such crappy low-blows to artificially induce a "challenge".
Make the game actually difficult, don't inflate difficulty by giving one save point, restarting back to the beginning of a level (no checkpoints on large levels) or impossible AI in NPC's... that's not what makes a game challenging. That's what makes a game maddening. If you want to make a "masochist" level to the game, so be it. There are people who would rather play the game in one sitting (with depends and an I.V. of fluids)... but for 99% of the gaming population, we have to stop for R.L.
That said, I have no problems with realistic unlockables. I plan on getting GH 2 at some point.... unlockables don't factor into my decision. - KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I really don't understand why people buy the strategy guides. If I'm seriously stuck in a game I can easily just jump on the internet and find plenty of strategy guides for free. I guess if you're a collector you might want it for your collection, other than that I see no point to spending money on that when it's readily available for free online.
- wolferz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A recent game I have been playing requires unlocks. Battlefield 2142. At first it was irritating not having access to good gear but as time went on I found that I got a sort of thrill out of unlocking new equipment. Now that it's taking longer and longer to get unlocks, its becoming irritating again. There are three unlocks I need now, and 5 other unlocks I need to get before I can unlock the ones I want. I find myself agonizing over which unlock to get and getting frustrated later on when I hit a situation where I need one of the ones I didn't get.
The point is that it depends on how unlocks are presented that determines whether or not they work and improve the game. It can be fun, but if you are hindered by them and there is no simple solution to deal with the problem created then unlocks end up reducing the fun of the game, not improving it. In the case of BF2142 I probably just need to work harder on my aim, which so far has sucked really bad :P.
Also, unlocks have existed in first person shoots for a long long time. To "unlock" the BFG in DOOM you had to reach at least the first level that contained one and find it. In the end thats not a whole lot different from an "unlock." I'm pretty sure the same holds true to many other genres.
/2cent - eean, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Arbitrary unlocking has always seemed to me to be one of the silly aspects of console gaming, along with the lame ass sounding desire for "cheats."
- ripismoney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love being able to unlock songs. While in some games having to play to unlock objects can be frustrating and a diabolical move on the half of the game publishers, Guitar Hero negates this with songs that are just plain fun to play in the opening set lists. Once you get on a roll in career mode and start unlocking songs, the game can be far more fun and entertaining as a result of the "I came, I rocked, I conquered" feeling that comes with beating songs. As far the more challenging songs that must be played dozens of times on harder difficulty levels, that's just to give you a challenge that can give you your money's worth.
As long as there are a few well-known songs available from the get go (and there are), I see no problem with having to rock to unlock the rest. Otherwise, the fun factor in Guitar Hero will wear off at a faster rate than with the challenge factor in place. - terrenceisdaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3anyone know when/where to enter cheat code? Title Screen?
- scrubking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's not a controversy at all.
- fuzzboxer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why is this even a big deal?
- MechaZain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What are guys talking about?
All you have to do is get a Perfect on Jordan in Expert. - spacecadetjuno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Those games are all based on a solid story as well this is just song after song so you can go play the last song and it still makes sense.
- staydead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well fortunately for you the provided code doesn't work.
- turrican, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@iluvatar: "but suppose you bring the game over to a friend's house for a party, but forget the memory card. No one at the party is going to want to wait 2.5 hours for you to unlock everything."
Suppose you show up and you forgot the beer? What do you do? YOU GO BACK AND GET IT! - FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ohhh so I won't do it on Expert but Medium will. Your a dumbass.
- wolferz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I disagree, the Contra code was not optional.... Not using it wasn't challenging. It was suicide.
- burstaneurysm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The funny thing is that when everything was available for download with Need For Speed Carbon, people bitched because they had to pay to unlock their *****. But it was there for lazy people to use.
Just play the ***** game... - czimmerman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2And maybe its because of my lack of friends, but while its would be cool to just be able to pop in the game and have all of the songs available from the get go, what's the incentive for me to keep going other than the Leaderboards, which I'm like ranked...17,000-something out of 140,000 or whatever the number was the last time I checked. I keep odd hours because of work, and because of that, I either play on-line with my friends or I play by myself, but a game needs something in it to keep me locked in. Giving me everything at the beginning is just going to make be get bored real fast, but maybe that's just me.
- wolferz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2half a day to beat sonic? wtf? It is SONIC. The whole idea is to go FAST! I can beat Sonic 3 with Sonic & Knuckles locked on (thats what? 15 levels? 10 bosses?) with all emeralds from both games in about 3 hours.
But yea. Most gamers on consoles now days a weak. Thats why I play on the computer mostly. Most of the old school hardcore gamers migrate there after high school. - Skwerl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@ pyroteq
Lies! Sonic had a few codes, including level select. Up, down left, right, hold A, press start, kind of sad that I still remember that. - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1However the last 10 songs or so, are all crap (except the last of course), so playing through the game without the cheat is really not as rewarding as you think.
- Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3A lot of the complainers probably already played the game on the PS2. I have no problem with unlocking stuff but I hate having to unlock stuff twice. When I do pick the game up for the 360 (hopefully in a week) I'm just gonna give it a quick run through on hard to unlock everything then go after as many of the achievements as I can get.
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yeah, sorry about my middle paragraph, I was just trying to say that it I did it with no problem and I'm not extremely skilled at the game or anything. It did come off a bit dickish though, my apologies. Barbie horse adventure part was supposed to sound dickish though, so take that as you will :P
- duzytata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Try medium mode and you'll have all the songs unlocked.
- FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Uhhh, if you're a Guitar Hero pro all you have to do is go through Expert mode once and you have everything unlocked. These newbs need to quit whining.
- embeem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Fixing the problem would be pretty trivial -
Give out a code that skips to a reasonably hard song, and if they complete it then unlock the content. - DarkElf109, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I'm guessing you've never played an arcade game. The only goals or achievements on those is to get your name/initials on the high score list. Which, and I'm just guessing here, Guitar Hero has.
Or, you know, you could play a game for fun. Just an idea.
