- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -8/+44Do we really need another ripoff of the wii controlller? No. Most of the games for Xbox are rated M and are the kind of games that don't need motion sensing most of the time. Besides, if I'm tired from work and I come home, the first thing I want to do is unwind with a game but I'm too tired to start waving a controller around.
Many people are going to go wii60 anyway since both the consoles are so unique. - xcheats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8News to me.
- lava, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13well, according to the article:
"Gates gave his interview a day after Sony had publicly joined Nintendo in announcing that its console would have a motion-sensitive controller. Don't expect the 360 to follow the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 into that field. Gates wasn't too impressed with the whole concept."
That was a while now, before the Wii totally rocked the house. I want to know what he thinks NOW - iruel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9i'm fine with that. i am planning on going wii60. gunna get wii right aways and then pick up a 360 some time after around the release of halo3, because that is what xbox is really about and i don't see how motion sensing could make halo better without completely changing it.
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@dharm: I think everybody has considered motion sensing technology at one point, im sure microsoft wasn't the first to come up with it. The way wii has done it, a motion sensing remote standard with the console, is unique.
- knyphe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They should seriously change the name to Real World/Road Rules/Dating Shows with bad actorstv
- Akkarin, on 10/12/2007, -16/+20No M as in Mature...
- Poco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Ironic that Microsoft was the first with the ps3-like tilt control in their PC sidewinder line.
- Spaz007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"MTV, generally the worst place for gamers,"
Don't forget its also the worst place for music... Because they never play any. - Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'm actually glad to see MS not ripping off the Wii features like sony did. If this really is the "perfect package", no features should be alike.
- CamoChris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@dharm: How can you rip off an idea from 7 years ago that was not widely used? In my opinion to be a rip off of something else then the two things need to be contemporaries. Like Pokemon and Digimon, or the N64 analogue stick and the duel shock. Nintendo has simply evolved to idea, and brought it up to date. The Wii will have games that depend on the controller and couldn't be done without them, and this wasn't true of the devices you speak of, which were competing with traditional input devices, games weren't written with them in mind.
- Ray301, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3that's just flawed logic about nintendo ripping off microsoft... the implementation is much more evolved and different in Nintendo's setup. You've got the accelerometer, yeah, but you also have the infrared triangulation for absolute precision instead of just relative precision the sidewinder had. They also have the two seperate parts to the controller that essentailly makes Nintendo's interface apples to oranges to Microsoft's. And while we are at it, Microsoft and sony's controllers are ripped off from nintendo's past efforts (such as the + pad, the analogue stick, the first implementation of rumble in game controllers)...
Its not so much as who tried the technology first, because i'm sure gyration was the first to implement motion sensing in a mass market user interface. Its about the context, its not like the technology wasn't there, its how the technology is used and if someone is brave and smart enough to use it wisely and make it popular. I'm sure Microsoft and sony both had thought about a motion sensing pad, but it just didn't make it past the management who couldn't imagine how they can make it fun and worth while. - ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm glad there won't be motion-sensing. It's at home in the Wii, it's prime home due to the style of innovative gameplay and the style of the controller, but in a standard pad it's just plain awkward, especially if it's as awkward as it seemed in that WarHawk demo on-stage at Sony's E3 catastrophe. Admittedly, Microsoft have a way with peripherals and they could probably do a really good job of it, but it's just plain unnecessary on the 360.
Good decision. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Not if it's the case forcing it's proprietary format on you and making you pay an extra $200 for it. Options are far better when it comes to a more expensive product.
Would you be happy if your favorite car maker ONLY made the interior in leather even if it came at a huge expense to the average consumer? - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't really understand that argument. Don't you usually pause a game before putting down the controller?
- sanza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ dharm
Actually, I remember something called Le Stick for the Atari 2600 that was mass produced. I used to have one (it's probably still at my parents house) and it wasn't made by microsoft. It didn't work for crap though...
http://www.classicgaming.com/gamingmuseum/2600p.html - Shugii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bill Gates is right, he knows that the world is full of lazy fat people who rather just sit on their ass and play their consoles. We don't need innovation, we need something easy. or do we?
- fartingbob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I dont see how saying "we will not make motion sensor controllers" will help microsoft though. Why not produce them as an optional controller, start making some games compatible and soon it might end up like the duel shock controllers, being the main type of controller for its console. with its main competitor just announcing it, and the wii shwoing it off earlier, gamers will want to try it at least, and if they dont have it on the xbox, sales may suffer.
Cant hurt much, and its not like microsoft doesnt like to make money. - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Your reference couldn't be more correct. In your case with the car, the user has the choice of either one. We don't get to choose between motion sensing and normal controller style. The manufacturer does. Its going to tick off a lot of people because people need to get used to one style of a controller, not two.
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what are you guys talking about?
EVERYONE knows motion sensor thingamabobs were invented by apple... right?
/me waves macbook around with lightsaber app running
Seriously though, I'm glad they aren't pursuing this, I'm not sure how I'm going to feel about using the Wii-mote so at least I'll have something to fall back on while I learn. - j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2knyphe,
A bunch of the major magazines have had plenty of time with the Wii's controller, and everybody else (not necessarily the general public) at E3 got their fair share of time as well. I believe they even let the people over at Time or some other mainstream press-type people get their hands on it. This time around, Nintendo is letting everybody have a try. And so far, I'm only hearing good things. - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Standard is far better than optional.
- jack_of_knaves, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why, when reading all these comments, does everyone say that they'll be "too tired" to "flail their arms around". Do you even know how sensitive the controls are? Have you read any E3 review that complains about exhaustion? I say you all just calm down till the PS3 and the Wii come out to start judging their motion sensing.
- doubleYou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3His car example is just a an attempt to make this into a Sony bashing opportunity instead of staying on-topic. The 360 will get trackball controllers if it turns out that those are extremely useful. Right now, MS can't change anything for several months, and they're predictably going to say that everybody else's stuff is somehow irrelevant and unimportant.
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The only thing Bill Gates knows about gaming is its potential profit, asking him about its future is like asking my grandmother the future direction of dance music....
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4go back in time to 7 years ago, and look for microsoft's motion sensing controller...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"a regular controller ought to be enough for everybody"
- decay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actuallly think the motion sensing is kinda cool, imagine playing dveil may cry and you could uppercut you swings and the works.
Whens the last time you guys copy pasted for an essay ;) - fmayson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't see why there is all this outcry towards other gaming companies copying Nintendo's motion sensor design. Yes, at first, the motion sensor controllers are going to suck. There will be balance and calibration issues, accuracy issues, every anal issue everyone has with new quirky technology. But after a couple generations of hardware, won't the end product likely progress to the hopes and standards we all have for a revolutionary, three dimensional control scheme? Look how the standard controller evolved from the NES stretched out chiclet to the new mega-button ergonomics of today. And yes, some games will probably always be played better with a "standard" controller. But lets not discourage competition towards this new design. I'd rather have the R&D of many companies perfecting design instead of just one.
- GotoDengo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"So how involved is Bill Gates in all things Xbox? 'Not a week goes by that there's not five to 10 e-mails where we're talking about what we're seeing, what we're doing.'"
5-10 emails/week sure doesn't sound like he's very involved. I guess 5-10 executive-level email updates is pretty frequent. But this is an MTV article... I would have thought him savvy enough to realize that, to the MTV crowd, this doesn't sound like he's very involved at all. That was my first impression when I read it. - gabebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is silly, dropping a normal controller would likely be just as bad. Anyhoo, who drops their controller while playing a game?
Online games certainly do have screens that are the equivalent of pause, you can almost always hit "start" and get to an option screen which is really the same thing as pause. - knyphe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ j0keR
So based on that, is it safe to say that it would be a bad idea to put it in a Microsoft conroller? - knyphe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1THANK YOU, somebody finally said it! Wait for the systems to come out and showcase their motion sensing abilities before persecuting them. Couldn't have said it better myself.
- Warlon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'll be going PSWii. I just can't stand the xbox controller to hard to switch over after all the years on original ps and computer games.
- knyphe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm confused, is this on topic, because it's about motion sensing, but its about everybody's favorite company to hate, Sony. Help me
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I disagree. The View is the worst place for gamers. I'm convinced that hell for gamers is eternity in the studio audience.
- Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The 360 has a massive integrated online community, voice chat, a bundled media download service, gamer profiles and statistics, support for the iPod, digital cameras, an external HD-DVD player; on and on the list goes. I don't call that meat and potatoes.
I personally don't want to have to wave a controller around. I guess Gates is making that decision for all of us since it wasn't their original intent to support. - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good one tfinniga
- redneckblues, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2He said it isn't ready. Yet. Future consoles might support it, but the 360 just doesn't have the goal/infrastructure that Nintendo has right now.
- Ironman11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dharm, even in a online game with a traditional controller, you can't pause and set the controller down.
invalid arguement =p - michaelstone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ha, I see what you did there.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Many people are going to go wii60 anyway since both the consoles are so unique."
I wouldn't call the 360 unique by any means. In fact, the cell processor(s), better hardware in general, and blu-ray drive make it much more unique and new than the xbox 360 (aka 1.5). That said, I agree that more people will get the wii/360 combo, only because of cost issues. Who wants to spend 800 dollars on just systems?
I personally was planning on supplementing my computer with a wii (the computer is still the best gaming system IMO) but I am questioning that only because it is starting to look more and more childish to me. As a 20-something male I am simply worried it would make me look immature and that my friends would have no interest in coming over and playing games with me on it. - doubleYou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's about marketing. The Wii is getting a lot of good remarks for being about games, and the PS3 is getting a lot of bad remarks for its pricing. Consequently, this means the 360 is not getting any coverage, and if it takes a personal visit from Bill to MTV studios, then so be it.
- knyphe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1But wasn't this about everybody's favorite company to like-in-the-console-market-but-hate-in-the-OS-market-even-though-they-probably-are-using-it-to-reply-on-this Microsoft.
- daines88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Honestly the XBOX doesn't need it, I have played XBOX 360s and the controller just seems so perfect as it is, also MS is in the whole "we have so much market share who cares what people want let's just squeeze the money out of them", just like Windows. The only difference is that gamers tend to care about what is missing unlike the 98% of Windows users that just use the computer for web browsing and don't know the difference between a virus and any other kind of malware programs
- vintechsys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who cares if M$ rips the controller off really? Now if they had changed their controller last minute and it copied Nintendo, sure then you could bash. In my opinion, I think it is very idiotic to NOT have a feature in something just because another company did it first. The consumer looses. Sony on the other hand, showed signs of desperation by copying it so last minute. That shows that they dropped the ball. I think the P$3 will be a great system, but i am going to enjoy my 360 too.
- knyphe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"He said it isn't ready. Yet. Future consoles might support it, but the 360 just doesn't have the goal/infrastructure that Nintendo has right now."
Otherwise saying, damn, we didn't think of it first, we can't make it standard with the 360 because that's too late, now planning for the Xbox 1080 to have "future console support" for motion sensing, I have seen what motion sensing does for a company's rep amongst fanboy blogs, and I don't want to piss off Nintendo since we are running this Wii60 campaign. - knyphe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@phpirate
is it possible that motion sensing technology for the 360 could be a good thing? Technically nobody has gotten a full feel for the Wiimote (E3 included. They probably only got a couple minutes as long as the lines were) and it is premature to say that this technology wouldn't benefit some games as an "added feature". For example, you said FPS, well picture it as you means to look left and look right or to run backwards or whatever. When I play games, I back away with the controller and wish I really could, so this would be great if imlemented in FPS, racing games, survival horror, and others. I believe their are endless possibilities with it. Saying that the 360 will have mostly M rated games is further perpetuating the stereotype the the Wii will continue to be the kiddie system; so kiddie system=kiddie games= kiddie games made for motion sensing=all motion sensing is good for is kiddie games. This is seeming to be your logic, but let me know if I am wrong.
All I am saying is that it could be a good feature for several types of games, including M rated games - peyotea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to phpirate:
for specialized category like racing games, optional is great (very focused option). Microsoft announcing full force-feedback race wheel w/ rumble is perfect for games like Forza 2 & any other racing game for that matter. I plan on getting a wii, but wii can't replicate full force-feedback with a wiimote. as far as traditional controllers go, 360's controller evolved as well as one could, imo.
obviously wii controls allow a unique style that simulates 'real motion' for its control scheme, so i think both wii & 360 gaming styles win. jury still out ps3 controller.

Still mad about the Sony blu-ray thing, huh? It was a good subliminal blow, though. Almost didn't catch it since you didn't mention the name -
