- noseeme, on 11/04/2007, -5/+35Protip: GamePro sucked then, still sucks now.
- Nudar, on 11/03/2007, -0/+24I think the biggest difference, when actually opening up the magazines would be that in the old days, you got more articles than advertisements. Now it's reversed.
- msaleem, on 11/05/2007, -1/+16It's great to look back at what magazines used to look like. The covers are just as 'retro' as the games the profile inside the magazines. The main problem I have with magazines today is that they are made redundant by the availability of online content. I used to subscribe to gaming magazines and several computing magazines but now I simply rss the leading sites in each industry and before the magazine could ever get to me, not only can I read the stories but I can also access the related downloads and read user commentary.
- atomicpoet, on 11/03/2007, -0/+12I actually miss Game Players. They could have based the whole magazine simply on its letters section.
- Asianwaste, on 11/02/2007, -0/+8Oh? Your soiled issues of Maxim and Stuff don't count as losing virginity.
- FoxOrian, on 11/03/2007, -0/+8The Computer Game Magazine change to Games For Windows is a little disappointing, mostly because it just looks like a full-page Ad instead of a magazine cover.
I rather enjoy EGM as one of the best looking evolutions. - schroeder, on 11/03/2007, -2/+9Went from bad art to bad photoshop art.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+7I've been reading EGM since 1989, and I have every single issue except for 5, 7, 27-31, and 97.
It's really sad to see how much it's changed over the years.
If anyone wants to see EGM #1: http://i12.tinypic.com/67xjcef.jpg - JordanM85, on 11/03/2007, -0/+7I've been a GamePro and Nintendo Power subscriber for over 15 years.. it's sad to see what they have become, but I can't quit now... right?
- nnagflar, on 11/02/2007, -0/+7Good story.
- riverstyx, on 11/03/2007, -0/+5I remember that first issue of nintendo power. Makes me feel old, actually. Anyone remember that movie "The Wizard"? That was almost 20 years ago. If that don't make you feel like *****, then nothing will.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+6TOUCHDOWN THURMAN THOMAS
- pooper, on 11/02/2007, -1/+5HOLY CRAP! I still have that GameInformer with Sonic!
- yukevster, on 11/03/2007, -0/+3Sorry guys, but American game mags (or mags in general) can't hold a flame to British ones (I'm not British). British game writers are way wittier, funnier, smarter and more game-savvy period. There are few exceptions

- tanside, on 11/03/2007, -3/+6Magazines used to be the only way to get information about video games, there was just something more tangible about them. Then around 1995 Al Gore invented the internet, now that same info and much more is practically free, lucky kids.
- ifm1989, on 11/03/2007, -0/+3Pro tip: all on one page please
- Azdak, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3Wow...what a serious bout of nostalgia...it made me smile
Hey, who else here misses PC Accelerator (PCXL)? Babes and videogames went together perfectly! - inactive, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3or come to digg
- tcasey22, on 11/02/2007, -3/+5The second my subscription ran out I lost my virginity too...
- KlayBorg, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2If Edge magazine isn't in there, it's not covering today's top gaming magazines.
- h4mx0r, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2PCGamer is still good fun. I think CGW/GFW has the most drastic change though.
- grhomepage, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Before Nintendo Power, there was the "nintendo newsletter". Ahh the good ol' days. Now its everything I can do to manage kids and bills. You kids out there right now have it so lucky with the great stuff available.
- FoxOrian, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2*Computer Gaming World, my bad.
- riverstyx, on 11/02/2007, -1/+3Kinda reminds me of Mad Magazine. They were hilarious for many many years and had the best artists. Last time i opened one some 5 years ago it was just trash, completely dissapointing. Cracked magazine sucks too and they worm their way onto digg to generate some traffic.
Didn't know Larry Flynt published game magazines, but thats pretty cool. Without him the world of pornography wouldn't be what it is today. - specij0rz, on 11/02/2007, -1/+3PCXL was the greatest game magazine.
- TiMMY8765, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2yeah Computer Games Magazine went out of business about a year ago. It was about the only good PC magazine left too.
- donte, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2I don't so much remember the "movie" but I do remember an hour and a half long commercial for Super Mario 3 and the Power Glove. And man, I couldn't do well at Rad Racer with a normal controller. I don't know how I would have survived using the glove.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+2Oh if you only knew how much first issues sell for to collectors, you'd be thinking other wise.
- postal21, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2woah wtf? I went and got all "nostalgic" and check this out...

??! it came back? - Sroek, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2GamePro was always for dumbasses.
EGM was great when Sushi X and Hsu were around. - benitojuarez, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2man dont forget about qb bills, rofl.
- afaik, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Where's Game Fan? That was an awesome magazine. Used really thick paper. Loved it!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GameFan - dudefaceguyman, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Yeah Tips & Tricks is absolute crap now. Used to be a decent magazine too, shame.
- KlayBorg, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2This list is *****, the UK based Edge magazine, despite being one of the most popular and best gaming magazine, wasn't included.
- jippers, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2ALL HAIL GAZUGA!!!
- maiku00, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2EGM's redesign turned out really nice
- plex, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Next Generation>*
How I miss thee - adraft, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1God how I love the pictures for the old Mega Man games.
- NecroSexy, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1From 50 new game reviews to 50 Things You Didn't Know about the Hottest Upcoming Games.
- grhomepage, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Game genie controversey!! game genie ftw
- BabyWookie, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1That whole magazine was pretty much just a catalog for their import game store and was dominated by Dave Halverson's personal tastes and biases. Their reviews were a joke. Plus, who can forget Monkeyboy Rox, the "little jap bastards" issue scandal and them blaming it on sabotage by EGM. LOL. They did have great screen shots and were quite good and exposing the import scene to the uninitiated.
- GoatMonkey2112, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1PC Accelerator was awesome. It was like the Maxim of game magazines.
- AARGH2K, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Next-Gen was the best for information, as opposed to the drivel that comprises most mags aimed at teens or younger.
- Vazel, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Oh it's just an aesthetic comparison. I was expecting a quality comparison all modern magazines would get a big FAIL especially when compared to Next Generation that was a great mag it's mature take on videogames was great.
- springboks, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1That's crazy, some of those 1st issues were $7.95 then. How is a mag 8 bucks? There's no centerfold or anything.
- ArchAngel21x, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1R.I.P. Next Generation. It was the best video game magazine ever. :(
- antdude, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know what happened to the CGW archive mentioned on http://kotaku.com/gaming/free/100-issues-of-comput ... ?
- wootup, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1GamePro was my favourite as well, until I became old enough to realise that it was the crappy tabloid of the video game magazine market.
- tanside, on 11/03/2007, -0/+1You forgot the really thick paper...
