- Shuk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21The PS2's success never ceases to amaze me! Nintendo is gonna keep raking in the profits with the Wii though, since the demand very much exceeds the supply (I still can't find one dammit!)
- Wiz1980, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19How can they be in the lead by Q3 when they only sold 60,000 more units than the 360? Don't they have like millions of units to make up to take the lead? Also arstechnica is showing units shipped not the units sold. 1up has the units sold from the NPD for march.
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3158885
Not only that but with titles like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Too Human and Halo 3 it does not look like sales for the 360 are all of a sudden going to stop anytime soon. - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You do realize WHY they aren't on the shelfs right? It's not like there hasn't been millions of Wiis shipped in since Christmas or anything. Just because you haven't been able to get one doesn't mean they don't exist.
- Hiki, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Holy Crap, they still make Gamecubes?
- skywake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think most Australians still are just relating the PS3 to the PS2
the PS3 has had a lot of good press in the general Australian media
but I have seen time and time again people shocked over the price
it was only the other day in EB games Perth I saw a mother and two kids
from what I could tell they already had a Wii and the kids were saying "we need a PS3"
the mother asked how much it cost and then realized it was $1000AU, the reaction was priceless
needless to say those kids probably aren't getting a PS3 anytime soon - bmac3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Some day this mob-mentality of hate for the ps3 will die , most likely when the hits roll out.
(Happy 360/Wii owner btw) - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The Wii is already on top... of my shelf, along side an Xbox 360 and soon, a PS3.
Stupid console wars... f*ck this is so pathetic. Link rules, so does Kratos, so does Master Chief.
Just play the games you love and shuuut uuuup. - cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12PS3 sells better than Nintendo (Gamecube that is...)
- Namarrgon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Sales numbers don't mean anything!"
Tell that to a games publisher. - OgnodoD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wiz,
The link you gave only shows the NPD for March, so it's not fair to compare that to this report about the whole quarter. March was a lower month for the Wii due to a very limited supply. Every Wii that ships sells. Prepare for the April results. Nintendo will kill in that month. Pokemon for the DS and a much larger shipment of Wiis. - spyderfreek2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sony Closes its doors? Wtf, They Do sell other things. For god sakes, go to the store look around and write a report on how sony has made its way into everything electronic! If PS3 sold no units, they could recover. After all, they still make money suing grandmas and people with no internet.
- OddTSi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm surprised this wasn't "backed up" by a link to VG Chartz (like it usually is) who show the 360 gaining less than 50k units in the past quarter (a couple months ago the 360 numbers were at 9.66M and now they're at 9.68M on their site). It's funny how if you believed their site 360 sales are virtually non-existent while the PS3 and Wii are moving along nicely.
- mjgeo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Because if an Aussie wants one, that must mean the rest of the world does too? Or maybe the whole population of Australia are planning to buy 5 PS3s each?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm still waiting for Atari's return as console king.
(I'm not holding my breath!) - OddTSi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Of course I'm suggesting VG Chartz is wrong. I was pointing out that despite the fact that it's OBVIOUSLY wrong people on here still quote it like it's the freakin' bible.
- EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Sony will close its doors January 1, 2008."
Um, the PS3 sold 130,000 units, while the 360 did 190,000. If Sony is closing its doors, Microsoft sure as hell aint far behind.
Oh, Sony still actually owns the PS2, which outsold BOTH!
-Pie - dpvnme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That makes you wonder when the Wii will be available so I can just to go a store and pick one up? Late this summer? I still don't have one yet.
- Ins0mn1ac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Something interesting was pointed out over at Joystiq:
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/19/npd-march-belongs-to-ds-ps2/
For the past 3 months, Nintendo's Wii sales have dropped. They fell from 400k in Jan to 300k in Feb to 200k in March.
Nintendo claims they're ramping up production, but I can't help but think they're orchestrating this whole thing just to rile up the press and the fanboys. - Ins0mn1ac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thats cause digg draws nintendo/apple fanboys like moths to light
- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sell 100 million units to a population of 21 million? Now that would be an impressive effort. With the economy being propped up by the current resource boom (thanks China) which would otherwise have seen several more significant interest rate rises, I think the average Australian would be thinking twice before throwing a grand at a games console. We know what will happen to our mortgages when China decides it has bought enough.
- dcoxen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are you suggesting that VG Chartz is wrong, or that the NPD information is wrong? I'm personally inclined to believe the NPD over the VG Chartz.
- Wytefang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And yet another mindless Wii-tard post attempting to justify their purchase of the duct-taped Gamecube system. Maybe if you lame-@$$e$ post more of these stupid articles, you'll eventually feel better about blowing your money on such a crappy system?? Who knows? Who cares? Dugg down for being a waste of reading time.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Love the way Arstechnica breaks everything down. Good article.
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They found their niche. But it's not mass-market anymore.
- naonao, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Find it's niche, or find some idiots dumb enough to buy it?
- SharkyTech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I think its more important to look at the games sales.
- Haesuse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What puzzles me the most is that people are already attempting to determine the fates of each system. lets make a quick recap before i make my point. Prime life of consoles today = 5-6 years. new gen in play = lot less than 5-6 yrs. the development of each system, including game development, controler utilizations, new format media, etc. is still in infancy technicaly. the real winners/losers will become obvious when all 3 systems have enough games out, the devs are 100% comfortable making games for these systems (ie. PS2 is hindering PS3 to a good extent atm), and even than its gonna be hard to point a finger. Wii will always have appeal to same damn niche of players that play mario, zelda, and smash, as well as kids. PS3 will get worldwide appeal of serious gamers, while 360 will get the same but with a shortcoming of asia, and to a decent part europe. so you tell me even in that case, who "wins" and who "loses".
- shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3At least Sony is making money on the PS2... Wait maybe that was the plan all along. They lose a ***** ton of cash on the sale of every PS3, but its release seems to almost boost the sale of the PS2 somehow. Those shifty bastards at Sony are up to some kind of trick.
Also PSP has 180,000 sales and is below the 130,000 selling PS3. WTF. - admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Yeah go nintendo! I love the wii and the DS. It's great that they are doing so well.
Sony should lower the price of the ps3 anyways. - frygar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4That's great news for Nintendo! And I know I'm not the only one chuckling at the fact that the PS2 *again* outsold the Xbox 360.
- ExaltedDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check this out:
http://digg.com/gaming_news/Strong_Month_for_360_Sales - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Nintendo is soon to be the next big console once again. things are finally being set right
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Once again people the PSP and DS/DS Lite aren't ***** consoles. They are called GAMING hand helds !!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1are you kiding nintendo makes the best games way better than sony and microsoft put toghether
- Namarrgon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Japan is way overrated these days.
The market has changed in the last ten years, "western" gamers outnumber Japanese more than 5 to 1, and even Japanese developers know this.
Success in Japan is a bonus, not a pre-requisite. - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I'd say the xbox 360's sales numbers are pretty impressive considering they can't seem to market well enough to japan. It's impressive that they can stay on top even with pretty much only westerners wanting it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3These articles are garbage. Sales numbers don't mean anything! Even if Nintendo sold 1 console and Sony sold 500,000, Nintendo would have made money on theirs and Sony would have lost it. Sony made the PS3 to help push their HDTVs and sound systems where they make the real money. Sony doesn't care if kids don't get one, they want people who can afford an HDTV and 5.1 sound system to buy their console. Of course the Wii will sell more; parents aren't going to spend the extra money for a 360/PS3 when they just want to shut their kids up and don't know or care about the consoles.
This pro-Nintendo/anti-Sony flood tends to lack any logic, and this is a great addition to that trend. - FellateMeFreddy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Come on. Is this really still news?
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Yeah...let the age of censorship, monopolizing, and crappy developer treatment be jumpstarted all over again! ;D
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3ZING!! You are so going to get buried and so am I but just wanted to let you know, I lol'd.
- sheonger, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1And this is important because ...
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6Sony is in a very close second and they really spin it to sound like they're floundering.
Considering the ps3 costs more than twice as much (for much more than twice as much), half the sales seems perfecty reasonable. - Namingway, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Old news, but still good to keep in the forefront. Eat that nintendo haters ;)
- CompanyMan, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Somehow i very much doubt these sale figures. Considering The Wii has been all be GHOSt on shelves since after Xmas. How can you sell consoles that aren't even available due to lack of production? What are they counting pre-sale orders?
Once again people the PSP and DS/DS Lite aren't ***** consoles. They are called GAMING hand helds !!
Considering if they are going to add hand helds to a consoles sold list you might as well add Blu Ray movies sold because of the Ps3 or game sales because of the Xbox360 or add the 10, 000 already pre-sale Xbox 360 Elites. Cause we all know the The Wii has NO great line up of games and neither does the PS3.
Hell might as well throw in the Sega Dreamcast it's last game sold 150, 000 before the pulled the plug on the system 3 weeks ago.
Whats next are they going to be adding Nintendo , Sony, or Xbox 360 Gamer Magazines sales to the list as well to bloat figures ? - Ubergoober3, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2old news
- RadicalPathways, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1For all of PS2's success, they only made barely over two billion...
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -19/+9Yeah, they just put them in new cases and give them a different name.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3This new report says that Sony will sell over 100 million PS3 units.
Sony consoles will continue to rule over Microsoft: report

| A new sample of more than 3000 Australian consumers indicates that Sony
