Just in case if the main site goes down... - BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -19/+127So it's exactly the same as ps2 except it's upside down? That looks horribly uncomfortable to hold.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -24/+123My god, fanboys are nearly impossible to please. You saw the backlash against Sony when they showed a controller that was even a little bit different.
It seems bitching is a geek's favorite passtime. (And yes, I appreciate the irony of the fact that I'm bitching about it right now) - nsbomb, on 10/12/2007, -43/+129so lets get this straight
Last year E3: Sony releases gay ass bannaa controller that was a spur of the moment decision
November: Nintendo releases kick ass revolution (wii) controller, shocks the world
This year E3: Sony, still out of ideas, copies Nintendo and decides to add a USB port costing almost twice as much as an Xbox 360
...LAME
Sonys days are numbered, the end is 11-17-06...
...I'm counting down, are you? - BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -9/+74drumr, you're just cute as a button. it was a joke, silly. :)
- incognit0, on 10/12/2007, -20/+83To be honest I'm a little disappointed. Was hoping for more of a change than the addition of one button and a usb port.
- puzzlesource, on 10/12/2007, -28/+85way to go sony...very innovative controller. Oh wait...that's the ps2 controller with a USB port...genius! Truly on the cutting edge of innovation/design.
- illt, on 10/12/2007, -22/+76with nintendo wii motion sensing...so original!
good luck europe:
600.00 EUR=762.480 USD - ErifNeerg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+53yea! I heard rumors that the Wii is doing something like that!!!
- SkaAgent11, on 10/12/2007, -4/+48Sony business practices have sunk to an alltime low. Last year they called motion detection a gimmick and this year they steal it from Nintendo who was obviously worried about that.
As my friend said, "***** those ***** *****". - rhino_rampant, on 10/12/2007, -7/+46MOTION DETECTION!? *****!!
Nintendo should've kept their mouth shut like they wanted...we would've been disappointed, sure, but anything to keep those little PS fanboys from touting supremacy for the very thing they've given ***** for since September....
First the game controller itself,
then the analog stick,
then the rumble pack,
and now the motion detection...
All without just reverence. - yeg0, on 10/12/2007, -10/+47Going to the boomerang and then moving back was embarassing.
Personally, I'm glad Sony sees the potential of this technology, but I think Nintendo's Wii remote controller works a lot better, because it's so simple. It didn't look easy or fun controlling the plane in Warhawk just by moving the controller, let alone trying to do anything while flying. Although the game looked AMAZING. - quamb, on 10/12/2007, -5/+39THEY RIPPED OFF NINTENDO!!!
So blatantly, its unbelievable.
Far out. - Drumrboy, on 10/12/2007, -13/+47sorry...
independent studies show sarcasm is near impossible to detect on the Internet
;)
(independent studies being.... me :P ) - d3m3, on 10/12/2007, -14/+47ISN'T THIS WHAT EVERYONE ASKED FOR??
"the ps2 controller was the best, can't be improved."
They listen to your complains and everyone is still bitching. get over it. - richjoyce, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39This is real, it was just announced at the pre-E3 press conference. The USB port is presumably for charging, since it is fully wireless via Bluetooth. It also has motion detection like the Wii's controller.
- StevethePirate, on 10/12/2007, -7/+38Yeah, that looks like a ps2 controller to me. But what would i know, I'm a nintendo fan.
- bab7880, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35Sony has always ripped off nintendo ... N is the reason that the PS was ever developed in the first place ...
Another ripoff -- not a suprize - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -16/+44I HATE SONY WITH A PASSION
ROOTKIT, RIPOFF, DRM, ***** HARDWARE, ***** SOFTWARE - drum_bum, on 10/12/2007, -45/+72oh wait its even more innovative! it senses where you move it! soooooo innovative. I want to yell Wiiiiiiiii in excitement. Seriously Sony, SCREW YOU and your copy-cat controller.

6:34 - Kutaragi asks, "Have you enjoyed our latest progress on the PlayStation 3?" The crowd's response is actually kind of weak -- but this is a long press conference and energy's ebbing. WE're hoping that the big secret (the controller) wakes this room back up. Controller up next!
6:35 - ... It's the PS2 controller. "INSIDE THIS BODY we have added powerful and elegant systems.... "
6:36 - Phil Harrison comes out: "It's not what it looks like, it's what it does. Let's switch to the demo, and, clearly a little secret is waiting to be unveiled..." Phil brings out a PSP. It looks like the PS3 controller does some special stuff: demo shows a crate on screen. A little secret is inside the box, banging and asking to be let out.
6:37 - "Now, I want you to watch this very, very carefully ... I life up the controller and it flies. This controller has 6-degrees of freedin using my hands as the entire input device. This standard controller will be packed in with every PS3"
6:38 - The controller's got X-Y-Z, pitch, roll, yaw, lateral motion detection. The controller uses bluetooth and wireless controls. It's lighter than the PS2 controller. This is interesting, because it suddenly makes Microsoft look like the odd man out on the motion-sensing controller front. How will Microsoft respond to the fact that they're the only one of the three that doesn't have a controller that support user input via natural movement of the controller?
6:42 - The Warhawk 3 demo that we're seeing now shows how the controller is used to control the motion of the on-screen fighter jet. The link between on-screen movement and controller movement is tight. Dylan Jobe says, "It marks an interesting moment for us. It allows us to change from static control mechanics to very kinetic control mechanics. As a developer and a gamer I'm incredibly excited about this..."
6:43 - "Today we're pleased to announce the global PS3 launch details. We will make PS3 available via a two-configuration plan. One with a 60GB HD. And the other with a 20GB hard drive. Japan's date: Nov. 11. In Japan 59,800 Yen. The 60GB PS3 will have an open price which retailers will set. In North America: 20GB for $499, 60GB for $599. Europe has 20GB for 499 Euro, 60GB for 599 Euro. 2 million to ship worldwide during the launch window. 4 million by end of calendar year 2006. By March 31, 2007 they'll have shipped 6 million worldwide.

The Duo-Shock II is damned near the perfect controller. The bananna-looking thing from last year couldn't possibly be an improvement. Way to big, way to unwieldy.
Also explains a report I read where the Sony spokesweasel was demoing a game with a regular Duo-shock controller. - nsbomb, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29The demo of the controller looked dorky,
"WOOAHHH CANT CONTROLL THIS, I HAVE TO GO BEHIND MY HEAD AHHHHH, oh yeah and I love you Sony" -Demo dude - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24$499 for 20GB
$599 for 60GB - Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -42/+64I normally hate when people do this but im soo angry at sony right now..... so ***** you sony!!
- tnoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Incase you haven't heard.
The official pricing has been announced.
PS3 w/ 20GB HD will be $499 in USA
PS3 w/ 60GB HD will be $599 in USA
Official announcement from E3 - burrito4891, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Oh God that is priceless. I think that's the greatest thing I've ever seen. For years everyone says how sony just rips off nintendo, and those hacks dont even give it 6 MONTHS! Oh my god, Sony you are hilariously shameless, undiggnified, and sad. Oh and congrats on the new price, Im sure the TONS of people will spend $600++ on your system (plus games, accessories, etc.). wow. wow.
- manicdvln, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Yes, it's true... They ripped the motion sensing, like they ripped force feeback, like they ripped analog stick.
- a1532b, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Sony's list:
Attempt to rip off Xbox live - Check
Attempt to rip off Nintendo's Motion sensing controller- Check
Gorge on newborn babies as their mothers weep, then eat the mothers - Still in progress - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24IS THAT SERIOUS???? they ripped off nintendo???? already??????????????????????
really??
im shocked.
i hope im reading this wrong - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22ok but 6-dimensions, isnt the same as the wiis... this is like tilt detection, the wiimote works in a 3d environment?
i am really looking forward to nintendo's secret, and i hope it blows those ***** away to kingdom come - 10scott10, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20this is why nintendo waited so long. they stole the analog from nintendo. they stole the shock from nintendo. nintendo expected them to not develop this this quickly. shame on them for calling it a gimmick last year.
- themulf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18499$ on nov 11th, there ya go.
- Sibertank, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Im paying $100 more for 40 extra gigs?
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26"The Duo-Shock II is damned near the perfect controller"
Thank Nintendo for the design. It's just the SNES pad. Sony just added handles. (Now they're ripping off the Wii's motion-sensor? Simply sad.)
Next thing you know they'll show off a nunchaku attachment for that USB port... - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19and they STARTED their briefing by dismissing the wiimote as a gimmick? seriously, i am furious
- locu543, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17you mean like this? http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2002/20020325h.gif
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22The Wii still does more. It has TWO motion sensitive parts plus it detects where the remote is pointing, the Sony controller can't do that and it has a built in bluetooth enabled speaker/microphone to play localized sounds such as gun blasts and lightsaber hums and can be used as a speaker for online speech and talking games. The Wiimote is still better than the Sony ripoff as we knew it would be. I'm just shocked that Sony would do something so blatant as to admit that Nintendo was right to use motion sensing tech. But, they took everything else from Nintendo, why not this too?
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16...maybe to charge it?
- iMark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15It's not quite as advanced as the Wii's controller. It only seems to sense the tilt of the controller, whereas the Wii's can pinpoint the location of the remote in 3d space as well.
This does have gameplay consequences - the classic example of using the Wii remote to control a sword (or lightsabre) for instance, won't be possible with the ps3 controller.
I find it slightly ironic that the Sony were touting the innovative nature of the new controller. I think it's widely going to be seen as a rather disingenuous attempt to steal Nintendo's thunder. - noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Hmm, so it looks that Nintendo is trying to innovate, and Sony just wants to stagnate. People complained and complained about the new controler because it LOOKED uncomfortable, but noone even gave it a fair chance to see if it was uncomfortable. The controler was acctually quite smaller than it looked in press pictures and I think it was a great concept to build off of, but Sony rolled over and did what was expected by the small minority of their fanbase, plus they copied something that Nintendo designed first. They provide no inovation to the game experience, and that frustrates me so bad!
I had such high hopes, but that's way too bad. At $500 and $600 for these boxes I hope they get what they deserve for putting their pathetic media war over their dominant and sucessful game console business. - dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21They did. Just came in that they ripped off Nintendo's idea.
- themulf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yeap, 6 degrees of motion, don't you just love cut throat business?
- pfister_, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23Judging from the Warhawk gameplay they showed with a view of the controller in-set, there's about a third of a second of lag between controller motion and in-game motion. And the ship was completely out of control; maybe the guy just can't play, but it looked more like it doesn't give you very fine control. It's what you'd expect for shoehorning a feature in at the last minute -- but a brilliant marketing coup.
- rhino_rampant, on 10/12/2007, -11/+23*PHEW* Thank god...
We don't have to worry about them selling any! - synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Im hearing on a few forums that Sony completely ripped the Wii motion sensing; is there any truth behind this?
Edit: Apparently so- Cloney strikes again. And I thought Nintendo was stupid for thinking other companies would steal their ideas. - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13this perhaps the cheapest dirty trick of all time???????????????????????????? what an absolute joke. do they think theyre "competing" with the wii now.
NO. microsoft and sony are ALWAYS trying to pull nintendo into the console war, but nintendo wants nothing to do with them. its really disgusting - rhino_rampant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12As pissed off as the gaming world is right now...you actually bring it all back to clarity. Thank you.
"No, Dad! You're supposed to hit L1, R3, X, X, O, THEN pull back on the controller! Gosh! Gimme it!" - cyberfelon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I was upset at first, but remember this: there is a reason Nintendo went with a one-handed remote controller. The PS3 controller isn't very well suited to a lot of the things the Wii will let you do. It worked great for Warhawk, there's no denying that, but it won't work well in a tennis game, a swordfighting game, and even FPSs (at least compared to the wiimote).
We've been saying for months that non-gamers struggle getting into games because the controllers are too complex. Sony has now added a whole new level of complexity to their traditional two-handed controller. Now the PS3 controller has 13 buttons, 2 analog sticks, a d-pad and motion-sensing! This is where Wii still maintains the strong advantage. - cornface, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15That was an embarrassing press conference. Shame!
So now the PS2 controller is an SNES controller with badly placed sticks they tacked on at the last minute and ripped from the N64, with a motion sensing idea they tacked on at the last minute and ripped from the Wii.
haha. -
