- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+74..It's not pointless, it's just the first step to fully working game "backups"
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -25/+53How about people who are waiting to buy a Wii until they can pirate the games?
- cardyology, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28@brocclibob - You're kinda missing the point here mate.
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31Those being?
- cyberscape2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31It had "relations" with my mother.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Sony killed the Dreamcast .. people just didn't pay much attention to Sega's console. It's actually the only console I own besides the x360 which I bought a month ago. Best Buy was selling the Dreamcast for 20 bucks at the time as Sega was shutting down production so I picked it up -- it was way ahead of its time, it still impresses me.
- Barnolde, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Pirated games are *****, having access to every game makes them valueless (and thus less appreciated) and less fun, learned that with the Dreamcast and the Xbox. Call me when there's some actual, worthwhile hacking going on; homebrew, emulators and XBMC are what people should be striving for. Although I don't think we'll ever see anything like what the Xbox was.
@bllambert; The DC had plenty more problems than piracy; it had the looming PS2 being the big one, Sega wasn't doing too well themselves, consumer apathy, etc. - thund3rstruck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"The first Xbox360 release was also like this. After a while, it became possible to play the backups"
No that's not true. After a while it became possible to play backups but not the backups of the original dumps. The dumps had to be re-extracted and SS-patched and run on Xecuter patched DVD firmwares.
These original dumps are useless as far as downloading them (to play) but it signifies an important step in running backups overall. - onkelcommy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Yes Red Steel was the first dump but it's corrupt and will never work when the Wii can run backups.
- zero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14riiiiiiight
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16chris, that's *****. there's no reason you can't go online with copied games -- at least on the xbox 360.
- CaptainRotundo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I used to think the 'backup' scene was 100% about piracy, until I got a kid.
- Psykaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"sorry, mate. left yourself wide open" - Learnt it from his mother
- Qazzian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@ thund3rstruck
Surly you need to start with a raw dump before you can work out how it needs to be patched. - DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Wrong, it was EA that killed the Dreamcast by immediately saying they will not support it. When the biggest 3rd party publisher says they won't be making games for your system, you are on shaky ground no matter who you are.
- marcomc2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@chris9902
single player games are no fun? i disagree. completely.
zelda, mario, guitar hero, goldeneye...
now that i cant think of any more, i guess you could be right.
but that cant be, it just cant. - Superflks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@cyberscape2
who hasn't? (sorry, mate. left yourself wide open) - cakestick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You're showing people that you probably smell bad.
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10i dont want to pirate games i just want to be able to load roms into virtual console for games that are not avalible.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I don't believe it's remotely true. When a game does it right, it's incredible. There are tons of fantastic xbox 360 games out now that really immerse you into their virtual worlds, and multiplayer is just a supplement for many of these games. I can still understand his viewpoint, I just don't agree with it.
- Textbook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9No, the original backups could be used, but they had to be patched with the ss. All you had to do was use SS merger.
You did NOT have to re-extract the image and you did NOT have to use any special firmware, the Xtreme firmwares worked fine.
Also, Xecuter never released any firmware for the Xbox 360, they're too busy making overprice power adaptors, sata > usb converters, and externals sata ports. - Sithlrd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yeah and I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Sure, if they were actually doing so. They aren't as of yet. Also, recent firmware hacks have been produced that disallow reading of drive memory. If you fear that they will some day start disabling accounts (likely scenario), that may be a good reason to not hack your console. That is not the current situation though.
And spyrochaete, I'll say again (even though i've been mysteriously buried for saying so) -- the xbox 360 does not need a mod chip. The hack is purely software based. It can be updated to be compatible with whatever firmware update MS issues. - ReXorcist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yes, congrats on being so "one three three seven" with your irc dupecheck...
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8MS and Nintendo, both having always-online consoles, can probably update the firmware without user intervention. They MAY not, but they CAN. Seems to me a firmware update would likely make the console incompatible with the mod chip (like PSP with hacks) and brick the box.
I'd like to see Nintendo games pirated though. I was very disappointed to see launch titles released for $70 CAD. I thought it was going to be a more frugal system. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Chris, you have to wonder if they would take the chance of disabling an account that may belong to a faithful customer who has either a malfunctioning system or a strict firewall that is causing problems. They might. But that's a moot point because the new ms28 samsung drives already contain firmware out of the box that is meant to block outside access. So MS's own hardware blocks their access from their own system data -- which was likely originally meant to keep hackers out, but that backfired. And then there's also the point that modifying the xbox itself is not illegal and they may not truly dislike the homebrew groups. The backup games themselves are usually heavily patched with "stealth" protection and are otherwise identical to the authentic games. The security sectors are usually pre-injected into the backups so the copy appears legit (otherwise the console wouldn't play it anyway unless you used a modchip).

Linksys switched to VXWorks to save money, it had nothing to do with people hacking the router.
VXWorks uses with less RAM, and ROM. You can still hack those routers, but you wont have the "disk space" to do what you could with the older style WRT54G.
They started making a new version of the WRT54G that runs linux called the WRT54GL. - violentvinyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Also regarding Microsoft and the home brew community, see: http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2006/6/22/4415
Specifically the part where Gates himself says "How can we engage this community?". - deadlikeoscar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Have you even played Twilight Princess or are you seriously just retarded?
- carolinevb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I have a Wii, but i think that the game prices are steep, especially if you live in the EU. We pay 59 euros per game that is 78 dollars!! and the console is 249 euros which is 330 dollars!
So us europeans are paying much higher prices than any other country.
I cant wait for a way to use the Wii as a media center (like my Xbox is). maybe compatible with the iTV in some way would be really neat. - GreySpec, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12Unlike the "10 lucky people"... I am still waiting for a Wii mod chip or XBOX 360 mod chip, before i invest in either system. I learned my lesson with XBOX to never buy a system at launch!
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"recent firmware hacks have been produced that disallow reading of drive memory"
that's even easier to detect then. If nothing comes back it's hacked. - Cputerace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5http://www.duggmirror.com
- Textbook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3PI rips worked just fine if you patched them with the SS using SS merger.
- Thezeppelin62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this is pointless you need a login name
- Textbook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's how much I make working my real job .. so if the price of making a backup of a game is equal to working .. I'll take the backup-making. It's much more fun.
- chazuk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7What do people do to their discs so they wont play anymore?
Remove from case - Put in drive.
Remove from drive - Put in case.

- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Anyone got a mirror? The forum's down.
- kris33, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Yeah. The first Xbox360 release was also like this. After a while, it became possible to play the backups.
- fyrehart, on 10/12/2007, -28/+30pointless, can't be run yet.
not that it matters, as i have the disc in my wii already - M4v3R, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://www.duggmirror.com
- Dohko_Xar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So when can I get an emulator to play this with my PC-enabled Wiimote? :)
- felderado, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@DarkStalker
EA didn't kill *****. EA doesn't make Japanese game. The Japanese market still loves the Dreamcast. They still have games coming out for it. If the Japanese are satisfied, the console will be a success. - violentvinyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Piracy can't kill a console, you're run of the mill console gamer doesn't have the technical know how to make it work. While I don't have numbers to back this up, EVERYONE I know that has a modded Xbox or PS2 got them AFTER they realized they could pirate them, they had no interest in the consoles before that.
- vinchBR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2playing backup games sometimes is the pnly exit for poor people...
it sucks... but when a game goes for double the price that it is in the US poor countries thats the only way... - justice7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ProjectX released the first XBOX games didnt they?
not sure who did 360. - bajasoprano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ok how about this i personally have 3 kids a 7 year old a 4 year old and a 2 year old and my 2 year old got hold of my copies of smackdown vs raw 06 , and gears of war and decided to make them into skates but not for his feet but with his hands now i have 140 bucks worth of worthless non playing games moment like these i wish a mod chip was out>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> now imma shoot myself
