- zaren, on 01/30/2009, -3/+68Start of the article:
"I'm assuming you've seen the new Final Fantasy XIII trailer, right? It was all the Internet could talk about yesterday, really, and if you somehow missed it you're probably not doing this whole "following information online" thing quite right"
Sorry, but I didn't hear anything about it. It was kind of hard to hear anything over the noise about the Google Street View guys hitting a deer. - dizavin, on 01/30/2009, -3/+64"BREAKING NEWS: we have reason to believe that this new Japanese RPG is probably going to be very, very similar to another Japanese RPG. and we have sources that say that they both were developed by squaresoft."
*****, better call out from the rooftops, we haven't seen that happen before and it would be atrocious if it did. - drlha, on 01/30/2009, -11/+63Correct, however: Chrono Trigger > Chrono Cross > Pretty Much everything else
- evilcaptain, on 01/30/2009, -7/+45Chrono cross spoilt me for every rpg that came after.
fingers crossed for this one :) - OptionalPirate, on 01/30/2009, -1/+29I wish I could digg this three times.
- plhearn, on 01/30/2009, -0/+23The original was far better. The 50+ playable characters in Chrono Cross made it hard to do any character development outside of the main character (who didn't even talk).
- grimstar, on 01/30/2009, -4/+26I can't wait for this game.
- PrometheusPV, on 01/30/2009, -3/+23Really the internet was buzzing? Like the entire internet? What is this 1996?
- Pentatonic, on 01/30/2009, -5/+23I'd rather play Xenogears.
- purzzzell, on 01/30/2009, -0/+17In a word.
No.
There was "TOO MUCH" in terms of sidequests to be able to find it all, do it right, and do it at the right time that you had the chance that you may have missed talking to one person (or given the wrong answer) and BOOM, you lost them as a playable character for the rest of the game.
It was probably about 40% as good as Chrono Trigger - still a GREAT game, and saying that is more a testament to how GOOD I fee Trigger was, not Cross being bad. I don't play EVERY RPG that comes out, but I loved Chrono Trigger - Cross I wouldn't have cared much about if it hadn't been the sequel to Trigger - VingintiTres, on 01/30/2009, -1/+16The company seems to be overzealous on taking down fan-made revival projects of Chrono Trigger. Maybe they hate Chrono Trigger's popularity as the best game ever conceived?
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -3/+17Chrono Trigger > Xenogears > Chronocross
To be more accurate. - NathanielJ, on 01/30/2009, -1/+15So because they appear to be using a stamina system similar to Chrono Cross, now we're saying that FFXIII is Chrono Cross? Really?
Honestly, I hardly even noticed that when watching the trailer. They use a free-roaming combat system ala FFXII, but with some tweaks like the stamina system. Hoorah? - thcobbs, on 01/30/2009, -0/+13I don't know.... There came a point where I stopped playing with bacon.
- Zippo, on 01/30/2009, -1/+14you mean watch?
- M3TARY4N, on 01/30/2009, -4/+17Link to HD Trailer..
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=IGBbX1uEskg - Nn010385, on 01/30/2009, -9/+22This whole trailer was just a bunch of cutscenes with very little actual gameplay. Pretty characteristic of the Final Fantasy series as a whole.
- elitebmo, on 01/30/2009, -4/+16FYI as awesome as Chrono Trigger was, Chrono Cross was GARBAGE. Dont get me wrong, I love LOVE square, square/enix, but this game was so bad. Every character was almost the same and the combo specials were lacking. 100 characters? WTF is this Suikoden? I own CC and now it just collects dust. My Chrono Trigger cartridge sits at home permenantly melted into my SNES.
- Balanced, on 01/30/2009, -0/+11They're still selling Chrono Trigger, for one... I just bought it for my DS recently. Still the same game, but the translation is a bit different and the interface is a bit different (built for the DS's touch screen).
- reyoo30309, on 01/30/2009, -5/+16I'm sorry but am I the only one hates the combat system from Chrono Cross?
- Virtualtaco, on 01/30/2009, -1/+12Xenogears did it before Chrono Cross... and it had a better story.
- GrammerPants, on 01/30/2009, -2/+13Never could get into Chrono Cross. Trigger on the other hand I have played, and beaten, a few times a year since it first came out.
As far as the trailer goes, this isn't anything we haven't seen before from FF XIII. We knew from the start that the battles would be similar to FF XII (which in my mind was one of the best over all in the series). - shieldsikebana, on 01/30/2009, -6/+17you just cant be satisfied can you?
- UselessTrivia, on 01/30/2009, -1/+11I think he was refering to how the gameplay in XII was often a lot of tedious grinding, much like an MMO, and the combat was pseudo turn-based with a realtime interface, much like an MMO.
XII had an awesome story, but I couldn't stand the combat so I avoided the grinding which left me with a massively underpowered character and eventually the game was no fun. - jessnine, on 01/30/2009, -0/+10I'm glad FFXIII is under the care of the FFX people instead of the FFXII people. The gameplay of XII was fun, but the story sucked. I didn't give a ***** about any of the characters. And I don't play Final Fantasy games primarily for the gameplay; it's always been secondary to the story.
But if the gameplay is going to be like Chrono Cross, even better. - Renian, on 01/30/2009, -7/+17"Final Fantasy XII was the pinnacle of the series, a daring attempt to evolve the concept of "Final Fantasy" in a way that was at once compatible with western, PC-based RPG structures and mechanics yet nevertheless faithful to the series' heritage."
***** BURIED! FFXII had too much MMO in my single player. - erkokite, on 01/30/2009, -0/+9Nothing is as good as Chrono Trigger.
- Meowfaceman, on 01/30/2009, -1/+9Suikoden predated Chrono Cross by four years. I'm sure Suikoden drew the team abilities from Chrono Trigger, but I don't know about multi-party members. Then again I'm not entirely certain what you mean by that.
I thought Suikoden's story was way better than Chrono Cross's was, personally. I thought CC's was basically incomprehensible. I've played through the game a few times and I couldn't explain to you what the story was. It's too confusing. - Jektal, on 01/30/2009, -1/+9Not if the gameplay was less boring.
- kcp12304, on 01/30/2009, -2/+10Isn't gameplay the foundation of gaming otherwise you would just be watching a movie...you need both but its the gameplay that keeps you coming back for more.
- thursdayevryday, on 01/30/2009, -1/+9Exactly, this is 2009! The correct phrase would be "The internets were buzzing"
- Hinph, on 01/30/2009, -0/+8You know, why do they still even bother putting so many resources into the development of these CG cutscenes when the in-game graphics are so jaw droppingly gorgeous? It made sense in the Playstation era, as the hardware and prerendered backgrounds didn't allow for very immersive cutscenes that enhanced the storytelling, but now? Consider this... in 1999, I played Final Fantasy VIII and dreamed of the day when in-game graphics would look as good as the CG scenes. And now here we are, about 10 years later, and the graphics actually look better and are in high-definition.
- SteveMax, on 01/30/2009, -1/+8As a whole? This trend started only in FFVI (and VI was still much more of a game than a movie). Only from VII and on that the cinematic aspect took over the gameplay.
- TCKC2C, on 01/30/2009, -1/+8Well, Squaresoft do get accused of re-releasing their games like the plague...
- fluidfoundation, on 01/30/2009, -5/+12OK, Revised:
Bacon > ChronoTrigger > Xenogears > Bolo > ChronoCross . - Tyrghast, on 01/30/2009, -0/+7Is it just me or does it look like Brad PItt showed up to save them?
- iDoraemon, on 01/30/2009, -0/+7"Final Fantasy XIII is...Chrono Cross?"
DO NOT BELIEVE! - magamiako, on 01/30/2009, -1/+7Final Fantasy has always been, first and foremost, about the story. The latter versions of the game series, as technology has been improved, have always used both a combination of gameplay and cut scenes to tell that story.
It's a style of game that works. The game series is one of the highest selling, most popular of all time. The only reason you might not know what Final Fantasy is in the game world is because you've been living under a rock. - superterrorizer, on 01/30/2009, -2/+8I'll dig it for you! I love those games.
- malechite, on 01/30/2009, -1/+7I wish i could digg this 47 times.
- glaz, on 01/30/2009, -4/+10That game doesn't look good at all. Strong Female Lead is utterly consuming the action genre. Especially these RPG where the male characters are physically altered to be as close to resembling a female as possible.
- divinediva, on 01/30/2009, -1/+6A perfectly reasonable assumption.
- BigMiller, on 01/30/2009, -1/+6bring back cecil and kain and do a final fantasy II-II
- thcobbs, on 01/30/2009, -0/+5I never got to play chrono cross because I didn't have the right console. Was it as good as Chrono Trigger?
- RoroCo, on 01/30/2009, -0/+5It is probably not in your best interest to say that about a FF game as the new 2010 release date is probably still only penciled in with those guys.
- stupidfilters, on 01/30/2009, -0/+54= great story
5= great job system
6= best characters/development
7= 3d breakthrough
7 was good, just overhyped - Nn010385, on 01/30/2009, -0/+5Fair enough; I will retract that statement. I do remember playing the old-school SNES titles and enjoying the hell out of them. It was only when the series decided to go all anime that gameplay started to become a secondary priority.
- trunksgoku, on 01/30/2009, -0/+5Square needs to take it easy on the androgynous looking male characters
