- fupresti, on 10/12/2007, -23/+109I personally own a 360 and will be purchasing a Wii. I will not be purchasing a PS3. However, I am by no means a fanboy. I have had nothing but problems in the the past with my PS1, PS2, and PSP. That being said, all of these arguments are going to be null, because it always comes down to the games. MS made the first big step by securing GT IV, taking away a big part of the success from Sony.
Blu-Ray is not going to be a deciding factor because how many people own a 1080P television. My personal feeling is that this whole Wii vs PS3 vs 360 really showcasing a separation in the console markets. Wii is obviously targeting families and gamers who want something truly new. PS3 has created a very powerful home entertainment package and 360 is a great device with plenty of potential.
Until more consumers move to HDTV's, these new consoles will not enjoy the success of the previous counterparts. Maybe next year when HDTV prices drop we will see a winner eventually step forward. - truspector, on 10/12/2007, -9/+88So first we get this:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/745/745182p3.html
The first major issue that the PlayStation 3 version has is that it doesn't include any online support. Considering that the Tony Hawk series was the first online game for the PlayStation 2, even before the Network Adapter was ever released, makes this seem curious. And the fact that this is the only major launch title that isn't online but should be is basically inexcusable. Tony Hawk's online play is good fun, and it's really disappointing that Neversoft included it with the Xbox 360 version but not this one.
The second problem with the PS3 variant of Project 8 is that it simply doesn't run all that well. The game chops up left and right, sometimes to the point where the controls don't feel responsive. It's bad enough that the camera isn't always perfect, but when it's staring at the bottom of your board and the game is running at 15fps, well, there's a major problem. That's not to say that it always runs poorly, as it can be reasonably quick most of the time, but Project 8 chops up way more often than is normally forgivable.
and then this:
http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/callofduty3/review.html?sid=6161718&page=2
Call of Duty 3's online component is more robust on the Xbox 360
It's worth noting that we encountered a handful of bugs in the single-player campaign. None of these prevented the game from being completed, but they did force us to restart levels from previously saved checkpoints. In several instances our soldier got stuck in the floor, and we got temporarily stuck a few times because a computer-controlled soldier had stopped in front of us, while another stopped right behind us. The most annoying glitch was that the CPU can occasionally see and shoot through walls and doors, which lead to many frustrating deaths.
Call of Duty 3's visuals are great, though a problematic frame rate leaves the game looking decidedly less impressive than it does on the Xbox 360.
There are a couple of visual issues that mar the otherwise great graphics. Key amongst these is the erratic frame rate. It was fast and mostly smooth on the 360, but the game's extremely choppy on the PlayStation 3. This problem isn't limited to hectic battle sequences either--it'll chug in rooms that are completely empty.
and now we get this:

With only 4 exclusives, two of which have already received poor reviews, why are people still lining up to be an early adopter. Don't feed me this FF, MGS crap either. These games won't be out for at least a year. Why do you want a PS3 RIGHT NOW knowing there is ONE good game and a handful of non exclusives that can't hold a candle to their 360 counterparts?
/end of rant. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+44I think he meant to say that taking away the GTA exclusivity Sony has enjoyed is really going to pull a lot of gamers away from them who just want to play the game and not worry about playing Blu-ray movies. It's absolutely significant that when the 360 can play the same games as the PS3 it'll come down to a simple cost comparison for casual gamers.
- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39wow...11 pages!
This article does a great job of cutting the marketing BS and looking at what really matters.
The PS3 will probably sell well because of it's predecessor, but I think it's pretty clear that Sony is going to lose their domination this gen. - Thorlord, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33my god this link is amazing.
i LOVE the indepth on the video cards..
makes me love the 360's video card even more. - dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24@Zoids
Not only that, but Microsoft (as well as Microsoft) have both established much more developer friendly packages for the companies out there. Microsoft has put huge efforts into the 360 DK, and Nintendo wanted to reduce costs. The biggest complaint I've always seen on the PS3 kit is that it was more or less hardware, a rundown of functions, and a good luck ass slap. It gives the benefit of some optimization room, but it defers that cost to the developers.
@NeoTechni
You know, your post was written well enough, but the subtext was "Xbox 360 sucks ass, PS3 is so much better." I'd like to see some specifics, because it just seems born out of bias. Kind of like a politician saying "trust me." - n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -14/+38"MS made the first big step by securing GT IV, taking away a big part of the success from Sony."
I am not quite sure what you mean when you mentioned "GT IV".
If you are you refering to Gran Turismo 4. If so, Microsoft has Forza Racing and has never purchased the rights to Gran Turismo 4.
If you are refering to Grand Theft Auto 4. If so Rockstar has stated that GTA 4 will be released on both the 360 and PS3 at the same time. Microsoft never secured the exclusive rights to it. - dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27You know, as a 360 owner, ***** you, GoatBnnn, for even pretending like you're on our side of the fence. Anyone with 1/10th of a brain realizes one basic truth when it comes to the PS3... it will be a good gaming system. Maybe, just maybe, people will buy it to play games. Yes, ***** Sony for being arrogant, ***** them for making the BluRay vs. HD a consumer problem, and ***** them for charging a left nut.
But don't you sit there and call the people that buy the system an idiot. An idiot is someone who makes up their mind on an issue (read, you) before they even see the issue come up. There will be a ***** full of games come out for the PS3. And the Wii. And the Xbox 360. Maybe, just maybe, people want it for games. Not HD DVD, not the online... just the games. And there are some great titles on every system. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25"Why do you want a PS3 RIGHT NOW knowing there is ONE good game and a handful of non exclusives that can't hold a candle to their 360 counterparts?"
The same reason why the PS3 Japan launch sold less than one game per console: people are reselling a rare video game console and not playing it. - Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22n8r0n,
I don't see the connection you're trying to make. The Wii has at least 10 exlusives at lauch(Just off the top of my head) and 3-4 of them have already received 8/10 or higher reviews. Some are getting lower reviews of course, but every launch has it's shovelware. - billymachine, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26@PhantomRogue: You lost me at "The PS3 is hardly an Entertainment System. If it is, then so is the 360, except I have to pay twice for the 360 to do what I have to with the PS3 once, which equals them out in price." No offense intended, but WTF are you referring to here?
I see the 360 and PS3 as essentially the same hardware-wise, which is to say, both are excellent. However, the 360 has Live, while PS3 has Blu-ray. Personally, I couldn't care less about Blu-ray, I'll just download my movies, thanks.
As games go, I think we'll see the exact same distribution as we saw last time: most games will be ported to all systems, but 360 = best action games, PS3 = best RPGs, and Wii of course gets all the juicy Nintendo games.
There, now we don't have to argue anymore. Right? Right?? - dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Huh... and here I thought the argument would only end when the Xbox 720 and the PS4 were being launched...
- slaystench, on 10/12/2007, -9/+27"Grand Theft Auto 4 has exclusive content for the XBOX 360 which WILL NOT be available for the PS3."
As does the PS3. What's your point?
People who are not knocking the PS3 are getting buried on digg? There's a shocker. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18The PS3 was expected to launch in Spring '06. Don't tell me that there weren't any games ready for launch at that point. If anything, the game developers have gotten quite a few "homework extensions" for a lot of their games and at least a few of them should look MUCH better than their 360 counterparts. Look at Ridge Racer 6 for the 360 and RR7 for the PS3. Both are launch titles...so which would you say looks better?
- EDmAN, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Hey I was about to submit this myself. Wonderful article, to me the 360 seems the better choice all around! It may have a little less processing power, but it is a better system. Sony is no supercomputer, that's for sure, it seems the Cell is not the technical wonder it supposed to be. I'm buying a 360 and a Wii for the price of one PS3 this weekend.
- truspector, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19@zoids
How about RR6 it has been out for a year and did better than RR7. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Man...that is some dense stuff. Very thorough, though, and a great read for anybody who wants to devote the time
But, this is my theory on the whole 360/PS3 debate: Even if the PS3 is just a little better than the 360, it's still not $200 better than the 360 in any way. I know Blu-Ray should even out the playing field, but I don't have an HDTV (along with about 80% of gamers) so Blu-Ray doesn't matter anything to me.
So, after buying a PS1, a PS2, and a PSP......I won't be joining Sony for the PS3. I'll stick with my Wii60 for this generation. I'm not being a fanboy here, I'm just looking at the facts, and I refuse to pay to fuel a "next-gen" DVD war - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22Sony is the one treating you like an idiot ... blame them.
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Inaccurate. People will be shoving their opinions down everyone else's throat until biblical Hell freezes over.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Does it say which one overheats and shuts off faster?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15^^ I did blame them. Notice I say "***** sony" not "***** PS3 owners"
@zoids. So you dont think that spending $500 for a non-functional blu-ray drive is stupid? Thats a smart investment? Now sony can say that X ammount of people have blu-ray drives in their homes. This is what this is about. Did you know that sonys stock is taking due to the gaming dept? They dont care about games, they care about tricking YOU into buying blu-ray so their proprietary technology takes off.
Lets list some other sony proprietary technology...
Memory Stick
UMD
BetaMax
Do you own any of those? Well get ready to add blu-ray to that list. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14It's not pointless, it's for ad revenue.
- Artemiszero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Enough of this. This is driving me crazy. Every one seems to be pushing their agenda. 360 and PS3 are nearly identical. The PS3 is a little more powerful and comes with Bluray (HD "dvd") right out of the box. The 360 requires an addon which when purchased will even out the prices of the systems. But the Xbox live service is killer. (I already own a 360 btw)
The PS3 is HDMI which is nice, but since most games will be naively 720P it's not that big a deal. This means that despite the PS3 having the 1080P native most games will run at 720P because it's less work for developers and most people with HDTVs have 720P televisions. I have a Samsung 56' DLP 1080P and the resolution issue is not weighing my decision at all.
Games. It's about games. For me, MGS4 is the reason to buy a PS3. Will I be buying one as the release date approaches and the title lineup is a little more appealing. So I agree that as of right now the PS3 isn't worth coveting. But, it damn well will be. To say that the PS3 is junk because "right now" the lineup sucks lacks foresight. MS got a head start. I'm sure Sony felt the pressure for a Christmas launch. So they blew it. They made some mistakes. But I'm sure they will recover.
When they do which system is better depends on your preference. Do you like online play or do you like single player games? Are you an MGS/FF person or a Halo guy? The games will be very similar in graphical quality, with 360 games outshining PS3 games just as many times as PS3 games outshine 360 games. The game play is strictly in the devs hands so that certainly not an issue.
That being said, stop whining about the PS3 price point. If you don't want one, don't get one. I hardly waste my breath complaining about something I don't want. I actually listened to many a MS fanboy complain about the PS3's price only to buy the HD-DVD drive at the EB I work at. I just shrugged a little and let them believe they got the better deal. When in actuality, they got the same deal. Or at least one very similar.
Same. They're the same. Only Sony's CEOs are douches. - Harabeck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Hell isn't actually mentioned in the Bible, scholars say that it's only implied that something like a Hell exists.
- EDmAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Ummm SNES and GAMEBOY. The reason people really argue over these things, is they don't want to make the wrong choice. I'm buying a Wii, for nintendo first parties like Zelda, Metroid, and Mario. I'm buying a 360, for Halo 3, and Call of Duty 3. I'm not buying a Sony because it's too expensive, and doesn't live up to it's cost, I'm sorry but blu-ray will be $150 for a player by the time FFXIII comes out, and that's the only PS3 game that I want. Blu-Ray may not even be the winning format, do I want to spend more money on a PS3 because it could be the winning format? NO! I will wait until you can pick up a blu-ray player for cheap (It will happen fast if they expect to sell them) Sony exclusives are falling off radar one by one, and 360 is picking up steam, has great online, and looks to be in the position to take away sony's dominance. I'm not a fanboy, last gen I owned all three the xbox being my last purchase and favorite of the three. Yeah it only had a few good games, but it did them very well. This gen I will only buy two.
- Harabeck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Dang, you must have lots of money to throw around. There's no way I'm payin over $600 to play MGS.
- Thorlord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10love the whole "Variable/constant disc speed" argument.
despite the fact that DvD's can ALSO do a constant disc speed. but they dont because it would be slower... like the BD drive is.
the slowest Disc Read speed on the DvD inner is less than Blu-Ray true.
but if Blu-Ray used Vairable Disc Read speed then the read times would be more than the DvD equilivant.
OH and close to 50% of the disc capacity is read at the 12x speed. 35% at 8x speed, and 15% at 4x speed.
because you see, it IS a duallayered disc. and there is MUCH more space on the outer rim of discs where it is faster.
now my % are off because i cannot find the source link. but each % should be within 5% of the actual number.
essentally. Blu-ray is good for movies, because the constant speed keeps it quiet. and it reduces read error. but it takes away the ability for developers to decide which information should be read quickly, and which data doesn't need to load quickly. - Methodius, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"There, now we don't have to argue anymore. Right? Right??"
That's the funniest thing I've heard all day.
"People who are not knocking the PS3 are getting buried on digg? There's a shocker."
Don't know about you, but I bury people who make retarded comments, regardless of opinion. Unless, of course, that opinion somehow involves NAMBLA. Then, of course, I bury BECAUSE of opinion. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I don't think 190 diggs means only 190 people have visited the website. In fact, it's probably hundreds of times that. There are a lot of people who haven't joined digg that just use it as a portal for cool news.
- velvet396, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"i'm bored of the technological pissing contests."
then why are you on digg? - Ollin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Here we go again.......another fanboy battle........DING DING.
- truspector, on 10/12/2007, -18/+25Thank you God. Good to know you're looking out for deceptive journalism and we need not question you. I like your Fox News style talking points and your sources are very reputable as well. Now would you care to explain now why all of the non exclusive titles that have been reviewed ran BETTER on the 360.
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This article doesnt settle ANY arguments, its just a hardware comparison.
There is only one criteria for buying a console: buy the one that has the titles YOU want to play. - moebis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11http://www.duggmirror.com

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm bored of the technological pissing contests. The system for me is the one I personally have the most fun with regardless of its specifications. This boils down to a few factors: which systems my friends have, which games are the most enjoyable for me, and ease of purchase. It doesn't matter me me which system "wins" the console war, which can render more polygons, what system has the most features, and which game runs in 10-15 more fps than its other iterations, as long as I'm having fun that's all i really care about.
- dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10@NeoTechni
Okay, I can get that, but it's something that was conveyed in tone. Your entire post was "this part about the PS3 was wrong, it's actually better. This part about the 360 was wrong, it's actually worse."
Overall, most of his article is spot on, and he gives credit where credit is due. What you're calling a blatent lie I'd call an oversight. Read page 4, and look over the processor comparison. He gives examples for his proof on capabilities, and he even calls out the best feature of the Cell. If it was a blatent lie, he would have said something like "and while the Cell has all this nifty technology, every time you use it, a kitten will get shot out of a cannon." - Casedot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6pelase don't spend more than $20 on an hdmi cable. If you do you need to do your homework a little better.
even Newegg sells cheap-ass dvi or hdmi cables. The quality is EXACTLY THE SAME as the more expensive ones from the ***** companies that just want to rip you off. The dvi cable that comes with your monitor is no less quality than the $100 monster ones. I laughed so hard when the guy at Circuit City tried to tell my parents (who were buying their first plasma tv) that they NEEDED the monster hdmi cables becuase they were better. They almost had to drag me out of the store... - Zoids, on 10/12/2007, -16/+21"Now would you care to explain now why all of the non exclusive titles that have been reviewed ran BETTER on the 360."
Because the 360 is an established platform which developers have had more time to get to know the system? - cockmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5exactly
dont some of you ***** people get tired of the same ***** day in and day out? all you should care about are GOOD GAMES. the end. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Yes, why have discussions ever? Guess Consumer Reports is out of business!
- TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10@NeoTechni
First, why don't you include some links to popular websites that backup your statements? It's easy for you to comment and claim things without actually backing them up with sources.
"and if the dis cis single layered or not"
Yes, the 360 discs are single layered, all they can burn onto them is 4GB. [/sarcasm]
"He forgot to mention the penalty for using tiling on the 360 (when you use resolutions bigger than the framebuffer has room for, which according to him, 720p is bigger) where he mentions the penalty PS3 takes for using all 512 MB of RAM for the RSX (even though it's smalled than the penalty for tiling on the 360)"
I can't even tell what you're trying to say here. Please try reforming this sentence using better more sensible grammar and punctuation.
"And his specs on PS3s 'OS' are completely wrong. He claims PS3s RSX and vRAM run slower than it's been reported from people who dismantled a PS3 and checked for themselves."
Link?
"Overall, that's just a few of the mistakes I noticed."
And non documented. - 60days, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7What amazes me is the levels of absolute certainty reached with only one console released (even though most other generations didn't really pull into their own until after a year or so). Thats some hardcore hypothetical fanboying.
- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6PS3 sold out in japan, cos they had piss little stocks, and most of them got sold on ebay :P
- NtHammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5but isn't sony releasing a very small amount of ps3's in the first place?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Actually, your logic fails in that developers will have had a year to make PS3 games look as good as 360 games now, but developers also will have by then had two years of familiarity with the 360, and the graphics will look even better there as well.
- DanteDefiance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ok so I won a 360 and I think it's the bees knees, however the PS3 is brand spanking new. 360 had a year head start on the competition. Developers have had time to see what the system can do.
It'll take a year before we truly see what the PS3 is capable of. By the time Ridge Racer 8 rolls out for both systems we'll see who can do what. -
