Discovery: Boot Xbox360 from 1888 Kernel - Downgrade Kernel
xbox-scene.com — Robinsod found a way to boot his Xbox360 with the original 1888 kernel (first public kernel release). Apparently the systems scans for version numbers in the headers of kernel patches and then selects what to load, by deleting the headers of the patches the Xbox360 boots the original 1888 kernel.

- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not really a massive find. Theres no exploits been found, and the average joe doesn't have the skills to desolder the flash, build a custom reader/writer, and then read the code.
Although if an exploit was found, I couldn't see why somebody couldn't make a solderless adaptor (like on the ps2 solderless chips) that clip onto the chip, then flash it. - sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2This isn't a big deal per se, downgrading a 360 kernel wouldn't really make any sense. The huge find was when someone figured out how to flash the newer 78fk dvd drives so that burnt games could be played.

As the article said, this hasn't been accomplished yet, but if you can keep Microsoft from patching holes through auto-updates, you'll always be able to exploit the same vulnerability once one is found. - QuiescentWonder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm pretty sure the dashboard can stay the same version while the kernel version changes so things like the kiosk disk can be run and you still have all your new dashboard features. If any dashboard features depend on kernel updates I can see how that would be a problem but no one knows if that's going to be a problem yet.
