- TehSwat, on 10/11/2007, -3/+141Dugg for random pictures on the right side.
- PooChunk, on 10/11/2007, -8/+129 Whatz the difference in the manufacturing cost of a 60 gig and 80 gig hard drive? Pennies. Now consider that the 80 gig model uses emulation to play PS2 and PS1 games, compared to actual hardware built into the 60 gig model. Guess what? IT costs Sony less to make an 80 gig model than it does to make a 60 gig. Throw in MotorStorm and no one will notice.
- Hoinah, on 10/11/2007, -24/+109No, well maybe on a lot of people.
The old set was 500 for the (now discontinued) 20GB PS3/600 for the 60GB
Now its 500 for the 60GB/600 for the 80GB (previously only available in South Korea)
No fast one, just a unit shift, one discontinued and one brought over. - catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -3/+79The 20GB did not have WiFi either
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/11/2007, -32/+78This is a dumb article. You are getting much more for less. That is a price drop..
- Sp4nk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+48Is it necessary to make your blog post look like a ***** MySpace page?
- Universe, on 10/11/2007, -6/+43No one wanted the 20 GB PS3, they wanted the 60 GB, so it is a price drop.
- loganhid, on 10/11/2007, -3/+39whats up with that website?
- turnthepage, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32Sir, please turn off the CAPS Lock key and reconsider your purpose in the cosmos.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32$100 for a 20GB upgrade is ridiculous.
It's kinda the other way around now, no one is going to want the $600 one. If it was 60GB/160GB it'd be a different story, as it is the best value for money is easily the $500 version, counts as a price drop in my eyes. - GeneralFailure0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Except if you have a huge library of PS2 games, like most of the people buying a PS3. Then you probably want to still be able to play all of those in addition to the 2 or 3 PS3 games you buy at first.
- silverwolfe, on 10/11/2007, -18/+36It was a price drop and even if you want to continue to deny it, you're still getting a better deal. Period.
- andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20Because people don't always read the comments. They read the description, MAYBE click the link to the article, and hit digg. Personally, I always check the comments, because digg is like one big ***** fact checker. If something is *****, someone's gunna tear it apart.
- chocobomog, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18SPECIAL DEAL: Buy a $600 PS3 now and not only will we upgrade the harddrive but we'll throw in a game for FREE!!!
or
SPECIAL DEAL: Buy a $600 PS3 and we will take off $100!!!
Both of those are better deals than I got when I bought my PS3. Either way, they are better than before, so stop complaining. - spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18Considering you can buy a 500GB HDD for $120 I'm pretty appalled at these SKUs.
- daspacepirate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13They were arguably more interesting than the article itself.
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/11/2007, -7/+19actually yeah they did..
- timlopez, on 10/11/2007, -8/+19Did the author really start the article off with "Many people came when Sony announced..."?
This "article" (IE: Blog Spam) is a piece of *****, sorry. - MBHoy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14That's one ugly, unprofessional site.
- InfinitySnatch, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13You only use your 360's HDD to save games?
- CanadianGuy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11You do realize that the PS3's HD is user upgradeable!!!! You can drop in a 120GB HD for just over $100.00
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Just went to Bestbuy and it's $499. They were sold out at a store that has had them since day one, so that should explain things.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11That's BS, it includes a 60 dollar game! So $40 for 20gb of space...which is a ripoff, true, but over one million people bought motorstorm for $60, so clearly there are a lot of people who want the game.
- TehSwat, on 10/11/2007, -7/+15Can you say "fanboy"?
- DreamVsPs2, on 10/11/2007, -21/+29What a stupid question and website.
If you went to the store last week to pick up a Ps3 you would pay $599. Go to the store today and it will be $499. - KyleMistry, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Dugg down, because the answer's obvious.
- chudgoo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9When has emulation ever been better than the real hardware?
- digudown, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13Entry barrier to PS3 world has not gone down.
- ts8lemonade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Remember the PS3 uses laptop 2.5" drives though. The biggest drive on newegg is a 250GB for $190 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380+130971534+1309729183&name=250GB ). I'm not saying it's a good deal, but a 120GB or 160GB seems more realistic, probably 160GB just to spite Microsoft.
- Muyoso, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Its like this. It isnt a price drop on a Camry if one year it cost 20k, and the next year it still cost 20k, even though the newer one includes more features. that isnt referred to as a price drop, its referred to as a feature update or something similar.
- ZephyrNinety, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12Yes, well maybe, but no if think about it, sometimes though.
- KyleMistry, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7A little yes, a little no.
The 20GB model was ignored mainly because it was just so lacking compared to the 60GB model. No wireless? No card readers? 40GB less?
Now that there's only a 20GB (+Motorstorm) difference between the two models, people are paying more attention to the options.
That said, I'm still happy with my 20GB that I got for Christmas. : D - digudown, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Its a valid question. PS3 was not selling because to enjoy any PS3 game u had to shell out $499 minimum. People were not ready to pay that much to be able to play PS3 games. After this announcement the entry barrier is still $499. If they had continued 20 GB model at $399, it would have brought PS3 within many family's budget.
Now 20GB was not selling well earlier as only hard core PS3 fan's wanted to buy something as expensive as $499, but they thought why not pay $100 more and get the best. While average gamer found even $499 too expensive.
Even now PS3 fans would prefer 80GB model as $100 extra is not much for them. And average gamers will still keep waiting for the entry barrier to fall further. - totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Wow, this ranks right up with the "iPhone costs $14,000" story. Do these idiots actually venture outside their basements into the real world, to see how the real world actually works?
Last week, the 60G PS3 was $599. This week the same 60G PS3 is $499. Yes, that means the price DROPPED. No "fast one" being pulled on you.
All the interesting news out of E3, and Destructoid is wasting space with this? :p - cherrj, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11Sorry Destructoid, I blamed you, but this is just blogger and a bad one at that. The worst thing is this is being Dugg. BURRY.
- NatsuMatto, on 10/11/2007, -23/+28This is the stupidest article I've read in a while.
Is the Sony haterade so ridiculous that dropping the price of a system by $100 somehow equates to "being tricked"? I guess so. Should they focus on only one SKU? Probably, but Microsoft is currently sporting THREE, and are ALSO charging $100 for a 20GB hard drive. At least Sony allows you to buy and install your own HD, if you so desire.
Are people ever going to give Sony a break? - N1NJ4hippie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7You guys obviously don't know who he is. HE IS CAPTAINCAPITALS!!!
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Exactly, I had an opportunity at launch to get a 20gb ps3 and I really wanted one, and I passed because I wanted more than 20gb of hd space, wifi built in, and the card readers. The 20gig model was gimped in my head. On the other hand the 80gb model is really no better than the 60gb model, outside of having 20gb more hd space, AND it comes with a 60 dollar game. So price drop? Yeah, it was indeed.
- typicalusername, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10FYI. All the retail chains have implemented the price change already. Yes, it is a drop. Once I mentioned to several friends that the price drop went into effect. 3 of them just went out and bought it...
- narcosis219, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6360 backwards compatability = real upscaling? I think Halo 2 on 360 pwns Halo 2 on Xbox.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -4/+9which is why i buried it
- phoenixp3k, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11What kind of stupid question is that! If you strip the SKU from their added value the PlayStation 3 price HAS dropped. The pricing options stay the same (yes) but if the 20GB SKU was still available it would retail at less then $499. If you want a core system without a hard drive and that will not be able to play all games in the future you can find it for $299...
- nyw7070, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Think only of the 60GB PS3, price drop
Think only of the 600$ PS3, upgrade
Think of 500/600 PS3 choices, for the same amount of money you get more things in both cases.
You used to have to pay 600 for one that has Wifi, now you pay only 500, how is that any trickery?
If you wish, you can spend 100 more on a silly 20gb (in which's place you could have bought a laptop drive yourself for a cheaper price and much more space) - spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Still, it's $5 per GB for the upgrade, by Sony's pricing that would mean that 250GB drive would cost $1250.
- RonPaulPres2008, on 10/11/2007, -8/+12Dumbest digg ever. Buried as lame.
- Kaosu, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Well it IS on Destructoid.com. Seriously people stop digging this destructoid *****. Oh wait the diggers who are digging it to the front page are Destructoid gaming accounts, my bad. Seriously check where most Destructoid submissions and diggs come from. There is a ***** group of people who ONLY digg up destructoid stories.
- yoshitomi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T LIKE YOU AND YOUR CAPITAL-LETTER AGENDA.
- YouRookies, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9With this stupid logic MS raised the price of the Xbox to $480
- DephexTwin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4vanboy. ......*****.
- synthesis811, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Well from what I read somewhere a few months back, the ONLY reason the 80GB model is even here is simply because the 60GB drives that were used are being discontinued by whoever makes them (Seagate I think), in a way Seagate is simply replacing the 60GB with the 80GB drive for the same price and Sony have done the exact same thing. and for all the Europeans (when it eventually comes here, the 60GB model had emulation anyway, so we won't be missing out on so much although I would have preferred emu to be kept.)
