Design Completed for a New Nintendo DS model
dsfanboy.com — Evan Wilson, an analyst with Pacific Crest Securities, says that Nintendo has completed the design for a new DS model. How does he know? "Contacts!" According to Wilson's secret oracle, the new hardware will ditch the GBA slot for an even thinner profile, and add some storage media and enlarged screens.

- DoodleMaster, on 11/15/2007, -20/+4Finally! i've been waiting for almost two years for the new model to be realesed because my DS(phat) was faulty its hinge broke and the L and R shoulder buttons stopped working for no apparent reason and nintendo would fix it for me when it was inside the warranty and I didn't want to waste money on a ds lite when I know the next model would be out soon. This is the best news I've had for a while i thank you poster! I am so happy that I can finally buy a new ds instead using a broken one thankyou for bringing me the greatest of news I've heard in while!
- The0, on 11/15/2007, -2/+17Wow. That is a long-ass sentence. Periods are your friend, as are commas.
- billybob217, on 11/15/2007, -1/+5Don't forget semicolons! Those are also important!
- DoodleMaster, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5wtf are you talking about there are three exclamation marks, and a period. its not one sentence its 3 and one incomplete. I I can't believe I was dugg down to 16 because of that. The only thing I missed where two commas to separate a list and I meant to say nintendo would not fix. I swear you people drive me crazy.

- Edrick, on 11/15/2007, -2/+27You wouldn't have to buy it to play the latest DS games. It would be entirely optional.
How is improving a product ever a bad thing?- FuzzyBunny, on 11/15/2007, -1/+17Logic has no place here on the Internets. Nintendo is obviously an evil corporation out to screw all of its customers by making their products better and cheaper. Begone, and take your foul logic and reason with you!
- AwesomeMonster, on 11/15/2007, -2/+16Because no other handheld gaming company is doing the exact same thing right now... Oh wait, yes, yes they are.
- doshindude, on 11/15/2007, -4/+15You obviously haven't heard of the PS3's new SKUs coming out every 2 months....
- badassninja, on 11/15/2007, -3/+16What's a PS3?
- Shawn4168, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1Hey, Mr. Sony fanboy. Your PS2's gone through like 3 major revisions now, PS3's already on its 4th SKU, and PSP just came out with a new revision as well. So please shut the hell up. kthxbai
- smackafiyah, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1Didn't PSP just released a slimmer version?
- BearinG, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1Its still annoying isn't it?!

- Wiinii, on 11/15/2007, -2/+46OMFG! I just bought mine this week, figures!
- ClockworksNine, on 11/15/2007, -1/+12*****! I did too! Aside from the bigger screen, the removal of the GBA slot is a foolish idea. No backwards compatibility = no dice.
- EllasIsKing, on 11/15/2007, -6/+1Why would anyone want GBA slots?
- smthop3, on 11/15/2007, -0/+16To play GBA games?
- Murdats, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6to use the DS browser (adds memory) to use rumble (used in some games) to be able to play roms (usually uses the gba slot) or any other expansion
- Elranzer, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2Perhaps it will have rumble built-in as well as the extra RAM needed to run the DS browser.
- Sparky100, on 11/16/2007, -1/+1My theory: You won't need the GBA slot for the DS browser, because the new DS has built in "storage memory". The rumble is kind of up in the air..Having a built-in motor or something seems like it would only increase the size. Also, if you plan on playing ROMs using a NDS homebrew kit (supercard, etc.) The newer models are DS-slot only.
- Shawn4168, on 11/16/2007, -1/+2Furthermore, I really doubt that Nintendo cares what the ROM community wants.
- EllasIsKing, on 11/15/2007, -6/+1Why would anyone want GBA slots?
- forgiste, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4me too! like yesterday!
- SkippyDoorknob, on 11/15/2007, -1/+6This new design, assuming it actually exists, won't be out any time soon.
- Kurisuku, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4It'll be out within a year. This is Nintendo we're talking about.
- Shorties, on 11/15/2007, -0/+31OMG I bought mine earlier today... ok... no, not really just wanted to feel a part of something... I'm so lonely.
- alexforcefive, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2I was going to buy a lite in the new year! phew!
- Pikachelsea, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1Even if this rumor was true, which I doubt it is, it wouldn't upset me. I've gotten a lot of use out of my DS Lite's GBA port (never had a GBA, so I enjoyed a whole back catalog of games that I missed) and IMO the system is thin enough as is. Would definitely not be worth it to lose the GBA port.
- ClockworksNine, on 11/15/2007, -1/+12*****! I did too! Aside from the bigger screen, the removal of the GBA slot is a foolish idea. No backwards compatibility = no dice.
- doshindude, on 11/15/2007, -21/+1That doesn't make sense.....Ditching the GBA slot won't really make it any smaller IMO. and they'd need to completely redo the firmware if they were to do that.
- badassninja, on 11/15/2007, -1/+25#1, yes they could make is thinner if they did that, use your brain awesomeo.
#2 Yes, they can make a new firmware, it wouldn't be that hard, life would go on. - Killbot2015, on 11/15/2007, -15/+1Also, I'm kind of confused here. The picture clearly still has a GBA slot on it.
- FuzzyBunny, on 11/15/2007, -6/+1It's a mockup smart guy. Use your brain.
- zwaldowski, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8The pic is of a black DS Lite.
- badassninja, on 11/15/2007, -1/+25#1, yes they could make is thinner if they did that, use your brain awesomeo.
- Renton, on 11/15/2007, -2/+7I bet this is his "contact"
http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=65377 - badassninja, on 11/15/2007, -11/+3That is very cool, a thinner DS and bigger screens makes me happy.
The only thing this brings to mind is now the pirates will have to find a new work around to make blank carts for the DS for home brew and "back ups". ;)- gcnaddict, on 11/15/2007, -2/+2According to TFA, the new DS will have some form of media storage.
That should help with the piracy. - skyshock1, on 11/15/2007, -2/+2Huh? You can already use an R4 or M3 card with a MicroSD chip to do that. Unless Nintendo plans on changing the size of the DS cartridge slot (NOT likely), then it'll be the same.
- NoQuarter, on 11/15/2007, -1/+2Yeah, there have been carts for the DS which only use the DS slots for about a year now. They take Micro SD cards and can play any game.
- Megatog615, on 11/16/2007, -0/+6Homebrew != Piracy.
Jeez...
- gcnaddict, on 11/15/2007, -2/+2According to TFA, the new DS will have some form of media storage.
- atomicpoet, on 11/15/2007, -2/+10I already have a Game Boy Micro -- which really has the best display for GBA games possible (although the sound is lacking) and thus I don't feel the need to have a DS be backwards compatible. I like my DS Lite, but I always feel it's a lot more frail than my Game Boy Micro.
Design-wise, I believe the Micro is the most elegant design, although I think it was doomed for failure when Nintendo decided to also upgrade the display for the SP. It's as compact as a cell phone, has great battery life, and has a finer dot pitch than anything on the market right now. The only drawback is the actual size of GBA games.
If Nintendo can ever make something that rivals the Micro for sheer mobility, I'll buy it. I wonder if it is possible on the DS, though. The size of the games are great, but the dual screens make such an enterprise questionable. - chingy1788, on 11/15/2007, -10/+2New DS design huh?
I think they would have dual touch screens what are large
think of the size of the DS now, i think the touch screens should span the entier surface of the console
The buttons are hidden underneath and can be pulled out when needed
the stylus would be placed closer to the front of the console (button panel doesnt span the entire width)
The speakers, im not so sure maybe placed on the two sides kinda like the PSP's speaker (cept PSP speakers are on the top)- chingy1788, on 11/15/2007, -6/+6If you exuse my poor paint skills
here is what i envision...
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/7821/ds2dz3.jpg
closed it would look pretty much the same as an ordinary DS, maybe thinner
the buttons flip out or slide out from beneath the screen
maybe a bit different, but you get a rough idea
- chingy1788, on 11/15/2007, -6/+6If you exuse my poor paint skills
- gamersedge, on 11/15/2007, -2/+10The removal of the GBA slot from this new model seems unlikely, due to the DS web browser needing this for extra memory, unless the memory was integrated, although backward compatibility is something nintendo really touts.
- marktastic, on 11/15/2007, -3/+1Maybe they could come up with an external GBA slot kind of like they have those external USB floppy drives.
- zwaldowski, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1Due to memory requirements, Nintendo made the Opera Browser for the Original DS and the DS Lite. I'm assuming they'd do something similar. And, assuming the internal storage is possible like in the article, they could probably use fixed swap.
- Evi1d33d, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1Or they just ditch the browser completely. Look at the PS2, the new slim PS2 ditched the harddrive support and but people stilled loved it. The only people who missed it are FFXI players and game pirates. Same goes for the DS browser, besides, it's pretty slow anyways.
- JenadaeXX, on 11/15/2007, -3/+30Im gonna go out on a limb here and say no, this is misinformation.
- Etheo, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2Agreed. Seriously, this digg title is missing the word RUMOUR right at the beginning.
- llamapalooza87, on 11/15/2007, -4/+3Yeah, these types of "analysts" also predicted that Wii would be the end of Nintendo and that the PS3 would blow everything out of the water based on brand recognition alone.
Buried. - AmonAmarth, on 11/15/2007, -2/+10I think i'll keep my regular DS Lite, it's the perfect handheld for me. Personally I'd prefer to keep the GBA slot as some GBA games are famazing (Tactics Ogre!). The oirignal DS cramped up my hands and ***** when I played it (large hands FTL, in this case) but the Lite feels perfect. No more models!
- Trax91, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1That is highly ignorant. You haven't even seen the design. I bet you'd be drooling over the new one on the mockups alone.
- tacklebox, on 11/15/2007, -2/+13This is like a rumor of a rumor and is about half as thought out.
- skyshock1, on 11/15/2007, -3/+3I have to call BS. Removing the GBA slot? That's not an incentive to get people to buy a newer model instead of the DS Lite.
- Scatropolis, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3If they replaced the GBA slot with an SD slot or some kind of flash memory slot I'd be all over it...
Eventually - Shawn4168, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1People are buying the $400 PS3s, aren't they?
- Scatropolis, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3If they replaced the GBA slot with an SD slot or some kind of flash memory slot I'd be all over it...
- ri0026, on 11/15/2007, -0/+43no no no, this is real. my buddy at nintendo says they're coming out with a T.S., with a third screen that touches YOU
- Megatog615, on 11/16/2007, -0/+23Only available in Soviet Russia.
- zeejay, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4With the number of older adults buying (and loving) the DS, they should make an upscale "deluxe" model with much larger screens. Even if expensive, they'd sell a lot of em.
- tedhead2k, on 11/15/2007, -1/+5This has already been denied by Nintendo. http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=22815
- demodawid, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2I'm not saying they are lying, but if I remember correctly, they denied the existence of the DS Lite a week before they announced it.
- Etheo, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1Failure to cite official source = another rumour
- cambrown99, on 11/15/2007, -0/+11It's going to be hard to improve upon DS lite's perfection.
- shredomatic, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3They need to make one with handles for us big Americans with big hands.
- Schmapdi, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1Gah - They came out with the Lite model less than a year after I got my DS. I've been annoyed ever since - mostly because all the accessories available are for the Lite Model now.
- RxDaniel, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3Don't buy anything involving technology within the first year. Chances are 1) There is some problem with the parts they used. 2) There will be a better version very soon after they hear people's complaints. 3) The price will always go down unless it is apple who thinks an ipod is as valuable 3 years after the model is released as it was on the first day.
- afx1, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6Does this finally support WPA?
- unrealmp3, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1I hope so.
- Zarxrax, on 11/16/2007, -0/+17This is crap. Nintendo can not make the screens larger. The games graphics are output at a fixed resolution. If you change that, then the output must be scaled, which would look like crap. Removing the gba slot would also be a bad move because a lot of ds games utilize this slot for various addons. Rumble pak, memory expansion, and theres a number of weird things out in japan that go in the gba slot. Not to mention all of the games like pokemon which can interact with a gba cartridge.
You don't do things like this unless you come out with an entirely new platform.- Snyz, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1Are you completely sure that the graphics have a fixed resolution? I mean, why wouldn't it just adapt to the screen size like any console would with different TV sizes?
- deviouster, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1I think they do, because when you play a GBA game, it doesn't fit the whole screen. That might just be the aspect ratio, though.I know what you mean about the console thing, but I think it's different for these.
I hav eno idea what I'm talking about, just.. nevermind. Just thinking out loud, really.

- TantrooM, on 11/16/2007, -2/+1I major problem with getting rid of the GBA slots is that the Pokemon players will be uninterested in the model. However, that won't matter too much, just will take a huge chunk out of sales.
- firedrillduckie, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3Awesome.
I just bought a DSlite like, an hour ago. - jjremy, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2Damn it. My ds lite's hinge broke last week.
Now I;m torn. Do I buy a new one now or wait and see about this.- yasirwisdom, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2same here...
and its all creaky when i open it- jjremy, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1the whole right side of mines no longer connected. the only thing keeping it in one piece is the wiring in the left side. im afraid to use it. :(
- yasirwisdom, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2same here...
- Misanthrope, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1I think the DS Lite is almost TOO thin as-is. Unless this thing has significantly larger screens or something else that's just too good to pass up, I'll pass on an even thinner model.
- planktonx, on 11/16/2007, -1/+1I heard that it's going to be motion sensitive, like the Wii.

- andyj4586, on 01/18/2008, -0/+0instead of the crap nintendo phone they have patented (hopefully not in design yet) they should make the ds have another touch screen on top for phone, mp3, and interweb. totoally possible if you see the new verizon wireless phones.
