- stlcadet11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20These are not OS's!! These are called portals, you install them into your root folder of the memory card on your psp and it is basically just a skinned up way to play a few little homebrew games that don't compare to the games available for the psp. It is a simulator of an OS with no OS functionality.
- chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22this is NOT an operating system.
- blueigloo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Its too bad I cant report something as duplicate, and lame.
I would hope the "demo" on their website (which is nothing more the DHTML) isnt the same thing you install on your psp.
UPDATE: yep, just a static html page with javascript, and images to make it look like windows xp. You "load" it through the PSP browser, NOT an operating system. Pretty lame. - dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"Portals" like this are a dime a dozen. Windows is, without a doubt, one of the worst operating systems to attempt to emulate on a screen of that size. Simply put, its a waste of screen space.
Now, if you really want something worth your time, go check out some of the better PSP shells.
http://psixonline.com : PSIX - considered the cream of the psp shell crop
http://dl.qj.net/iR-Shell-1.4-Wi-Fi-IR-Apps-PSP-Homebrew-Applications/pg/12/fid/6540/catid/189 : IR SHELL - great functionality
http://artillery-shell.com :Artillery-Shell - another great shell
http://psp-oss.com :PSP-OSS, not the greatest - its a windows clone - but much more interesting
All in all, this thing is just a bunch of cheesy html documents - hardly a "portal". If you want real functionality - again - go with a shell.
Not to mention, the site says "pspWxp will NOT harm your PSP!!! It is NOT homebrew!". Sort of tells you what kind of idiots you're dealing with ;) - Mystikal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Thats not an OS...its a portal. And there are other OS out there...take PSIX for example.
http://psixonline.com/media/psixupdated-ss.jpg
Thats an OS...its for firmwares 1.0-1.5.
@retral - Its not boring. Sony is planning to release an eyetoy, GPS, and voIP for the PSP withing the next months... - kwilliam71, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Figures... this seemed too good to be true.
"Well, really it is just a set of webpages that look similar to Windows XP"
Stop wasting my time. - The_Ox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14.... its just a screenshot of windows through a browser... not impressed.
- DarkZen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9My thoughts exactly...not only that like others have said this is NOT an OS....And all those things for aim/icq etc... are probably just AJAX/similar portals... There is already a homebrew program that runs on the psp for messangers anyway... I see no point to this, as for it being a "saving grace" it is not... If we could get linux to boot on it on the other hand.......
HB - kwilliam71, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Undugg... reported as inaccurate.
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9rofl WEAK
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How did this get anywhere near the front page?
PS if i scrawl START on my testicles are they running Windows XP? - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ahhh, jesus christ. THIS ISN'T AN OS, THIS ISN'T A SHELL. It's a portal, and users of firmware 2.XX run it through the web browser. There are NO custom firmwares/operating systems for the PSP right now.
The only shells worth mentioning are irShell (it loads homebrew at whatever clockspeed you desire, and it turns your PSP into a universal remote) and FileAssistant (best GUI ever). - Brennan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5There's nothing to try, it's a stupid webpage, not even close to an "os".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Appreciate it for what it is; a simple and pretty organizer for flash files that it stores offline (meaning it's by no means a portal).
Secondly, they seem to be open to suggestion and evolution of the service (they're making new themes). You all seem pretty judgemental, but this is a DAMN slick service for updated PSP owners.
If they continue to update it or better yet, create a callhome feature that updates and lets you pick and install new features (is it possible to transfer data from the explorers cache to memory card?) then this could be pretty slick. It's a LOT like an ajax based os which all get lots of love from digg. open your minds.
dugg. - Unr3a1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought it was free. Where does it say you have to buy anything?
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I meant don't even bother with a PSP. :P
- sert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PSP's would be fun if you were lucky enough to get one of the earlier firmware versions. You know, before Sony started deliberately crippling the system. It would've been awesome to run all that cool homebrew like in that screenshot.
I'm afraid I'm too late at this point, though. - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31. Most people are comfortable with Windows.
2. Windows is more easy-to-use than, say, Linux, for most people. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Why windows... of all OS's to emulate???
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4It runs games? Wow, finally a way to play games on the PSP :)
- kevin_qnn, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8they do have an OSX one.
http://x5.psp3d.com/index2.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ok. I know people are saying that this is not an OS. everyone who said that, rtfa! i said it uses the web browser to display. web browsers display web pages.
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The real question you should be asking is if said testicles can run Linux;)
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The contents of the article have nothing to do with my reply.
- ikehack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I just installed the thing. It's pretty damn cool. Only let down is the loading speed (since its all on offiline webpages .. everything) Other than that it's cool. Can't wait for the Vista theme.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I know it's not an OS, its just a sim.
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Better yet if either one of you artards read the article you would realize it isn't even an OS/Shell, much less windows.
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5When are people going to join the [insert year when Win XP came out cause I'm too lazy to look it up].
Windows doesn't blue-screen unless something is severely wrong (i.e. your hardware is screwed up somehow). - Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3HAHA! Homebrew suckers!
- ers35, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Gosh, I was just trying to liven up the place...
- kwilliam71, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Ah jeez... here we go again with another Windows/Mac war. Come on, they are both excellent systems. Pick your color and move along.
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Save your money for an UMPC. :P
- Unr3a1, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7I hope it doesn't crash or lock-up constantly :(
- firemaker103, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I can imagine trying to scrool around windows with a joystick, and it's not a pretty picture.
- Mystikal, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1BSOD can show up on your PSP...sony style. :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2You win the comment forum.
- ers35, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5For the blue screen of death....on the go!
- TeKoverride, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Has anyone tried this yet?
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3It's an .exe, I don't really know if I want to try this yet either.
- satori3000, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2looks not quite ready for primetime. I'm certainly interested, but I have no real idea if there is anything hidden in this.
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -17/+7Funky, too bad I sold my PSP because it was boring/overpriced and had weak battery life.
- theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3This is a great addition to the PSP.
- shadowmoses, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5This looks really cool and could be a saving grace for the PSP, if only they could do an OS X version of the OS
- JuliusCaeser, on 10/12/2007, -12/+0Wait a minute this is still windows, which means blue screens of death on your shiny psp.
- Skettalee, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3Amen Brother!
- JC4P, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3THIS IS ***** AMAZING!
It's SO better than the screenshots on your PSP! - Aiton, on 10/12/2007, -19/+4This looks amazing Im going to try it now
