Contra 4 DS Looks Amazing
1up.com — Konami's announcement of Contra 4 didn't (initially) make with the passionate burning of the nerd loins, not like a flamethrower weapon upgrade would. 1UP's new preview of Contra 4, however, changes everything.

- JDoggqx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Wow! I was skeptical when I first looked up the company Konami choose to make the sequel, but having seen the screens and reading the review I'm completely blown away! Now if we could get a Gradius/Life Force sequel...
- eladon, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7This is my incentive to buy a DS Lite.
- swrostmore, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3by "looks amazing" did you mean "looks exactly like the SNES game?" Contra 3 was awesome though.

- GGzah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2looks like you just start typing - no place to 'start' per say
- Tanath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1He said, "how do you DO start?": Enter.

- qwertylicious, on 10/11/2007, -11/+1At first I came here to moan at the title for it substituting "4" for "for". But as it is regarding Contra 4, instead I can only moan for the absence of the word "for" after "4" (i.e. the title should read "Contra 4 for DS Looks Amazing").
For for for for for for for for foooooooor.- Jwoey, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1it woulda been cooler if you had found a way to shout 'fore' in your post.
Guess you don't wanna be cool. - Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Just so Konami can purposely add to the confusion of peopel liek you, a golf version of this game is also being made for the DS.
"Contra 4 fore for DS announced"
- Jwoey, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1it woulda been cooler if you had found a way to shout 'fore' in your post.
- iheartartoo, on 10/11/2007, -9/+16I'm not really sure about amazing. Just looks like regular old Contra to me.
- JDoggqx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9That's the amazing part. There hasn't been a "regular old Contra" since 1992. All the Contra games since then went in completely different (and usually bad) directions.
- potp, on 10/11/2007, -29/+5why the ***** are the bitches at konami not releasing this for the PSP. The ***** DS is owned by kiddies who were not even born when we were playing contra. Metal slug absolutely rock on the PSP and contra would have rocked harder. Well no loss i will just use emulators to emulate roms.
- Antialias, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18Just my personal experience, but I've seen way more "kids" with PSPs and almost all the people I know(adults) have a DS, none own a PSP, and many of them are pretty hardcore gamers.
- heysuburbia, on 10/11/2007, -6/+14I'm 27 and I played Contra on the NES when it came out and I'll play it on my DS when this comes out. Never owned another non-Nintendo console my whole life (except Dreamcast).
PSP is owned by jocks/rich kids and people who like watching movies on small screens. Nintendo FTW again. Eat it, dork.- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3You are missing out, Nintendo has made great systems (except the Virtual Boy) but the other systems are pretty good too. The DS is the best handheld but the PSP has a lot of good games too now.
- DoomMusic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Sony Fanboy-ism has no effect here.
- lordmetroid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4There is nothing wrong with the DS, the games are fantasticly fun.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Hello potp, meet the digg down button, I am sure you are going to be seeing a lot of each other soon.
- therealgeddylee, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Well said 'heysuburbia', there are some amazing games out for the DS. PSP has it's moments, but considering the DS is made by the greatest group of videogame designers to ever grace the play, kindly shove your PSP where the sun won't hit it.
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2there seems to be a fanboyism epidemic on digg. i own a PSP, but i have no problem praising other handheld systems and being objective (or mature, rather) about the issue.
i would actually like to see contra on the PSP as well. there's absolutely no reason for them not to bring it to the PSP. the Konami Antiques: MSX Collection (PSOne) is already being being released in 2 volumes as PSN downloads, which includes the original Metal Gear Solid, Contra, and Castlevania for the MSX.
emulators are pretty popular amongst PSP owners so Konami would be remiss to not release more contra games for the system.
- h3ndrix, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3Yeah, it's not really that great.
- rabidsnail, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8I'm all for them making an old-school platformer, but it doesn't have to be 16-bit. Hell, it could even be vector. What's with the low res?
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Well, we have no idea what it looks like animated just from those screenshots. Remember that the US contra had a lot of ambient animation removed that was in the JP version, as well as a slew of other things.
- swrostmore, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3uh, no, DS can not handle vector graphics
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1the screen shots actually show pretty good color depth. it simply retains the old-school look with sprite-animations and parallax backgrounds.
compare it with screens from Contra III: http://www.yamisoft.com/flashback/contra3.html
and you can easily see that the graphics have been greatly improved to take advantage of a larger color palette and 24-bit truecolor.
besides, the DS's strengths have never been in graphics capabilities. its screens are each equipped with a 2d engine and have 256 x 192 resolution, which the screenshots appear to be scaled up from. this is a normal resolution ds screenshot: http://www.xbox-modchips.com/nintendo-ds/star-wars-episode-iii-revenge-of-the-sith-screenshot4.jpg
sure, they could have used 2d vector graphics, but that defeats the whole purpose of calling it Contra 4, which is meant to bring back the look and feel of the original series--RTFA. most DS games use 2d sprites anyway and still manage to look great when you're playing it on the handheld, and this game seems to be no different.
lastly, side scrollers and platformers are meant to use 2d sprites, not vector graphics. there are very few games that actually look good using 2d vector graphics. the benefits of scalable 2d vector graphics are also lost on a low fixed resolution display. the amount of detailed artwork that a platformer like Contra requires would be completely loss using a 2d vector engine which are meant for games like this: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/159/340655311_547fe77160.jpg
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Well, we have no idea what it looks like animated just from those screenshots. Remember that the US contra had a lot of ambient animation removed that was in the JP version, as well as a slew of other things.
- underrun, on 10/11/2007, -11/+3This is Contra FOUR!?
They've accomplished nothing in versions 2 and 3? My NES looked this good.- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2You must have had one hell of an NES if the games looked like that on it...
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i call *****. this is what Contra looked like on NES: http://www.consoleclassix.com/info_img/Contra_NES_ScreenShot2.jpg
the NES only had a 48 (+4 grays) color pallete and could only use up to 25 colors on a scanline. this game clearly makes full use of the DS's on-screen palette size and demonstrates much greater color depth than any of the originals.
it's a sidescrolling platformer, so what were you expecting? it looks great for the type of game it is and is on par with the graphics of other DS titles.
- in2deep, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Contra is the best Nintendo game ever....well you might have to argue Mario Bros or Double Dragon
- trer, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1About time, my DS Lite has been collecting dust because of all the kiddie games that keep coming out for this thing.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Ok, be honest, how many of you got the NES Contra's waterfall level music stuck in your head when you saw that first in-game screenshot on the page? I know I did.
- moocow1452, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1^^vvBA "Start"
- therealgeddylee, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Holy crap, that looks epic! Those dual screens get put to some sweet use =)
- ptacnik, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23"New Super Mario Bros. is a huge inspiration for us," Hulett explains. "Nintendo looked back and created a game that was based on the original Super Mario, not Mario 3 or Mario 64, and made a game that feels like the original. That's exactly what we want to do here with Contra."
SOLD- grumbel, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Being based on MarioBros1 instead of a successor to MarioBros3/World/YoshisIsland is exactly the reason why I was quite disappointed by NSMB, it was a decent game, but I already played better Marios a decade ago. So NSMB always felt like a step back, a lost chance to create the next big 2D Mario.
- DarKnight90, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I really wanted to buy a DS Lite, then all of a sudden I said "Nah ***** that." I'm getting one for sure now.
- bottleguy, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2This is what Ninja Gaiden for the DS should've been, instead of that crappy 1st person with stylus *****.
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1actually i thought the control scheme for Ninja Gaiden looked bad ass. it almost made me want to get a DS, even though i already own and love my PSP.
if nintendo only rehashed 20-year-old games instead of trying to develop new and innovative games like Ninja Gaiden for the DS they would not be as successful as they are today.
IMO the ninja gaiden demo videos show exactly why the DS is such an amazing and successful handheld. anyways, how can you knock it when it's not even out yet.
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1actually i thought the control scheme for Ninja Gaiden looked bad ass. it almost made me want to get a DS, even though i already own and love my PSP.
- TomParis, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3I own a DS Lite and Im amazed at the overall quality and functions such as WIFI gaming etc... and yes im looking forward to Contra!! WOOT
- stauken, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Did 1up get dugg? Wow.
- tanameyer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Best part of this new Contra game... 2 (or even 4) player Co-op! AND since everyone will have separate screens, you WON'T have to wait for your slow partner before proceeding in a top-to-bottom scrolling stage.
It always bugged me when someone you're playing with is too fast or slow and they end up dying because they are "scrolled" off the screen. Damnit, you need every extra life you can get in the Contra series! - JimmyRyan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Doesn't look "amazing" don't get me wrong looks like it will be fun, but I was a bit let down going in looking for something "amazing"...
- mwatcher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3A game doesn't have to "look" amazing to be an amazing game. Contra 4 represents a shift back to the FUN part about the series rather than the absolute need to have 3D graphics in a game just to be considered current-gen.
- moneyries, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Who really cares about DS now that we've got Wii ?!
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Over 80% of Japan?
- Spamiclese, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2It's a sad day when a 2d scroller with pixelated graphics is considered "amazing".
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Oh no, it doesnt have enough polygons for you? *****.
- mwatcher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It is really a sad day that some people should think that a game must have 3D graphics in order to be called amazing.
- JimmyJJWalker, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I totally agree with you man, this excitement is totally left field from my impressions.
To me it actually looks pretty crappy.
- awesomename, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ok, I'm buying a ds lite. I like how they are going back and making it like contra 3 instead of their own interpretation of it.
It's sad how few people today are making good 2d games for mainstream consoles or even PCs so it's nice to be able to be able to still play 2d games on the ds. I wish that people would use the new graphics cards and processing power to make full resolution 2d games with the ability to have tons of sprites on the screen.
Btw: Spread gun ftw. - Recoil, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I can't wait to get this game. The graphics look exactly like classic 2D Contra (well, a bit better). Oh, and the soundtrack will be composed by Virt, who I pretty much consider THE master of chiptunes.
It's a shame so many people don't consider Hard Corps a "real" Contra though, I think it's a great game that sadly is often overlooked and underrated. And Neo Contra? Sure, it may be on the easy side, but it's still fun and the campy cutscenes remind you not to take these games too seriously. It's all about mowing down everything in your way with a big fat smile on your face :D - TBoneFever, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3What's this? A 2D side-scroller for the DS that doesn't have a dumb kid-friendly main character(s)? I'm in.
The Contra series started sucking once it tried to go 3D. - jmdajr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2WILL BUY DAY 1
- bittertea, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1graphic is so ***** for a ds... but I am still a fan nevertheless (of contra that is)
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Um, excuse me?
- JimmyJJWalker, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Are people seriously impressed by this?
It looks like an NES game, super pixely... nostalgia is one thing but delusion is another, seriously. - Shanobi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Screw vector, I want hand drawn art for most 2d games. I didn't mind New Super Mario's use of 3d characters, but generally speaking I just love the look of well drawn and animated sprites.
- AnnaBay21, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0there is nothing better than the high old time I had with NES games! they are awsem! I like the preview!
- blacklavender, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1hopefully they can get contra back on the right track.
i loved Contra 3 on the SNES, me and my bro would play that for days, good times.
I wanna see how 4 people is gonna work on the DS.
That's gonna be some multiplayer fun.
Can't Wait. - fallenone05, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1amazing = looks just like the old contra games (which is not a bad thing)
