- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Except, the 360 only accepts the proprietary WMV format. Oh, and you need to own Media Center Edition to stream (or did they finally relent with the latest firmware update?).
Either way, you can stream to the PS3 too. - G_Raph, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14no matter how you look at it, the ability to stream all your video and music from your pc makes the 360 a real media player. Nobody wants to play stuff off a usb stick or a media card all the time.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9It depends how you look at it. The simple solution is to install Linux and then you don't even need your PC because your "PS3 PC" will already be hooked up to your HDTV and thus no need to stream.
- fallenone05, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3that's your 360 :P
- jackal230, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Xbox 360 require transcoding on an external machine for most formats/codecs? If the PS3 can handle all file formats and decode all the popular codecs through Linux, it will have the upper hand. It would be nice if the PS3 could just read off a network storage device and play the file.
Does anyone know if you can read from NTFS hard drives in linux? And, would it be plausible to just access and play files from a networked hard drive on a PS3? - CvR8, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6The reviewer said it was his PC making all that sound and the PS3 was "dead silent". Just read the comments on the website.
- G_Raph, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6edzieba...the xbox 360 will stream wmv, mpeg 1 & 2 no matter which version of xp you have. It used to require media center 2005 version 2, but they fixed it with the latest firmware update. Now you can stream music/video off any xp computer or you can play music/videos of a usb drive, memory stick, or hard drive.
- ch3570r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Xbox Media Center for the xbox is far better at streaming and playing videos (with the exceptions of HD content) It even upscales DVDs to 720p
- lovedaddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2To be honest, I've always just burned the films etc to a DVD, or copied them to my xbox (xbox 1 - using media centre) - so long as the PS3 allows me to do this, I can safely say that I'll be getting one.
- mmykle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the movie is not working for me. any sugestions?

Actually, you can just burn them to a DVD and transfer them that way if you are using the installed Linux to play them - which I assume most people would b/c they'll want to play xvid/divx files. But I'm not sure if you an transfer movies into the GameOS with a disc. - Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8I agree completly. I'm sorry to say, Xbox360 basically does the same thing, with less in between steps, and a pricetag 200 dollars lower. The ability to stream my media in "streaming thumbnail", seems to be a bit of a straw grasp for PS3 IMHO.
- xcrunner10, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8For once, I'm getting a little excited about the 360. I just need the price to drop a little bit and I'm basically sold.
- littlesquall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@chriskzoo
Sure you can do that but the point is, why not eliminate the step of burning a DVD and transferring that way, and instead be able to stream over your home network from your PC or file server where all the media files are centrally stored? That way you save time and PS3 storage space. - fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1buy a PS3 and find out firsthand
- Slybri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The Xbox 360 streaming is nice but there is no way to organize your videos. How do I seperate all of the porn from the decent stuff? If they are serious about using the 360 as a media extender they need a folder system.
One thing did suprise me though. I downloaded some clips in WMV-HD and they streamed to my 360 perfectly.
Now I'm just waiting for someone to hack Windows Media Player 11 so I can stream DivX/XviD to my HDTV. - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Yeah, same with me.
- joshman5k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I aggree,
I wonder if they will issue a firmware update to make streaming possible. Surely they havn't discounted the idea totally. - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3@chriskzoo:

Sony will have a very difficult time streaming content to the PS3. Just for the simple fact, that their competition owns the operating system 99% of the PS3 users will be using. Microsoft integrated it so well because they have total control over the OS, and it works great. Now if Sony engineered the PS3 to show up just like any other Media Connect device (not sure if they need to have it licensed or not...), then they'd have a chance for similar features.
Of course Sony will just downplay the whole streaming feature as something a "true gamer" doesn't need in the Next Generation™. They will send out the fanboy talking points saying that you can't stream your stuff from your friends house... but you can with a memory stick.... - Bara, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3There are coupons available for, I believe, Circuit City for $100 off either Xbox 360 bundle (Core or Premium). So you can basically get a 360 for $200.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Am I the only one who read this as:
"One of the major draws of both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles are their ability to play BACKUP media in addition to games. Here's a tour the PS3's media functionality."

Rippad av Rosa Mannen = Riped by the pink man - theragu40, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Wow...is that the PS3 making all that noise in the background, or is there a plane flying over his house?
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5You didn't hear the 7th DSP on the cell is reserved for "Sucking balls", truly a supercomputer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Suck my balls Sony.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2The Wii has a REMOTE CONTROL!
