- RedS0x, on 08/13/2008, -0/+47Some of the codenames are better than the final names, in my opinion. Especially Nitro and Revolution.
- shoff88, on 08/13/2008, -3/+40The tag that these are "embarrassing first attempts that almost happened" isn't very accurate. "Revolution" was a kick ass name for that console. It is so much better than "Wii"
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -3/+38Ah yes, the revolution. That codename got a lot of attention before the Wii was knowned as the Wii.
- babylonian, on 08/14/2008, -0/+22I actually have an Ultra 64 shirt that was supposed to be given out preceding the system's release but wound up not being distributed after the name change. It says "I'm waiting for Ultra 64" on the back.
I'm still waiting for Ultra 64... - pHr34kY, on 08/14/2008, -0/+20Most of these are known to most gamers, but I didn't know about the codenames embedded into Nintendo's product codes. That was an observation of epic proportions!
- Strokemouth, on 08/14/2008, -1/+18Lots of people have them. We call them "PC's."
- 0tis, on 08/14/2008, -1/+15Turn 360 degrees and you'll still be looking at it... but I appreciate the sentiment.
- tapo, on 08/14/2008, -0/+13Dev systems are sick. Post photos now.
- 3amboo, on 08/14/2008, -0/+12Codename for the PS3 - "Solid Snake"
- blast_flame, on 08/14/2008, -0/+11I prefer DS over nitro but revolution is still vastly better than "wii."
- Raz4Life, on 08/14/2008, -1/+12You do know 360˚ is a circle, right? So you'd turn around in a complete circle and... keep walking toward the 360?
- tapo, on 08/14/2008, -1/+12Would your Grandma want to play Revolution?
Nintendo's point was that - although us gamers hate it - Wii sounds friendly, inviting, and new. - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -1/+11Release Mothter 3 game already lazy nintendo of america.
- Sk8SkaNJ, on 08/14/2008, -2/+11Notice how both of those systems are making Nintendo loads of cash.
- iamanalog, on 08/14/2008, -0/+9Katana for life!!!!
- BrokenCircle, on 08/14/2008, -0/+8I have an actual Nintendo Dolphin system that I stole when I worked for Interact. It sadly does not play Gamecube games.
- coyote1284, on 08/14/2008, -0/+7And yet they ran with "Wii"?
- BrokenCircle, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6Why the ***** have you not been banned yet?
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6heh. The good old days.
- Owwmykneecap, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6xbox 2 vs playstation 3
which one sounds older underpowered etc? - SubjectiveC, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6I've got three more: Playstation, Playstation 2, and Playstation 3. *shrugs shoulders* I guess Sony really likes the name.
- Ryan166, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6not even Ecco?
- Brododium, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6Knowned?
That does my head in.
I still dugg your comment because it's true, the revolution really piqued my curiousity and anticipation. - Pronation, on 08/14/2008, -0/+5Go Project Reality! The GFX are so real!
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 08/14/2008, -1/+6Kinda cheesy though
- Corbinwaltz, on 08/13/2008, -3/+8http://digg.com/search?section=all&s=nintendo+revo ...
- djpray2k, on 08/14/2008, -0/+5I have to admit epci fail as I, as many, slammed the name change to Wii. With hindsight I can say that if it wasn't for the name change, it wouldn't have been such a sales success.
- peterredding, on 08/14/2008, -0/+5Revolution definitely sounds cooler than Wii but we already have Wii Sports, Wii Fit and soon Wii Music so from Nintendo's marketing point of view they probably did the right thing.
- BrokenCircle, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4It does not take the Gamecube format dvds. It takes npdp cartridges and dvd.
- Galaxylander, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4Nintendo Nitro
Gameboy Oxygen
Hm, I guess they like gas. - LStone, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4Just adding to the last section, the 360 universal remote has the word 'XENON' printed inside the battery cover.
- hartley, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3NoA will release it 10-15 years from now as a remake.
Until then, watch these guys.
http://mother3.fobby.net/ - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3'Revolution' is a name that you couldn't target to the 'casual gamer' market. It seems that Nintendo isn't targeting the 'casual' market by casualty ;)
I for one acknowledge the Nintendo Wii as their biggest marketing success. - Systematic1, on 08/14/2008, -1/+4Haha wow. PS3 fanboys aren't too bright. Have fun with Madden 09.
- gs68, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3And then trip over it and break your neck and die. Cue Kcaj Thompson saying that video games kill.
- Electricpigdigg, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3The Wii might be a strange name but it's more 'brandable' than a word like Revolution.
- 0tis, on 08/16/2008, -0/+2It's ok, didn't he get hanged for being mental?
Although I did hear that if you look in a mirror on Halloween and say "Hot Coffee" three times... - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -4/+6One thing I don't get is why it's called an XBox 360.
...aside from the fact that when you see it, you'll turn 360 degrees and walk away.
(No, but seriously, where did the 360 come from? It's not a sphere.) - Elranzer, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2Originality was always Sony's forte.
- SpawnXe, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2i wouldnt say its more brandable, there's plenty they could have done with Revolution considering the consoles 'revolution' on the console market (by putting interaction before graphics). Think about it, Sports Revolution, Fitness Revolution... it still works and relates well.
It boils down to the fact that 'Wii' works for the target market. If they're main audience was hardcore gamers then the Revolution would have been more suitible. - DemDude, on 08/14/2008, -2/+4DirectX Box sounds pretty lame... Also, why'd you want to climb inside? (SCNR)
Also, Plural-Apostrophes, why on earth do people do that? - TaintBrush, on 08/14/2008, -2/+4My uncle tested Xbox waaay before it was released, and it was called DirectX Box at the time (as mentioned in the article). It was just a plain white box you could easily open to get inside. It was cool.
- Zarokima, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2Browser-eater of three old fat men ***** in the shower.
- jonbush404, on 08/14/2008, -1/+2"...aside from the fact that when you see it, you'll turn 360 degrees and walk away, "
pretty sure you would still be staring at the xbox if you pulled a 360 - g1garr, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1The Xbox 360 elite was codenamed Zephyr when it was shown.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1Yeah, but why 360? Why not... XBox 900?
- chaosblade77, on 08/16/2008, -0/+1I thought it was something about human energy moving in a circle. I don't remember where I read that.
I think what's odd about the name is that it's the fact they combined a box and a circle. I can just picture the MS executive staring confusedly at his hands, one containing a circular shape and the other a box with a square hole. - AckbarAdmiral, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1But will it run Crysis?
- chaosblade77, on 08/16/2008, -0/+1It's even funnier they didn't even come up with the original product name, Nintendo did, although it had a space in it at the time (Play Station).
Now, with every version of the PlayStation, Nintendo is haunted by that horrible business decision. - chaosblade77, on 08/16/2008, -0/+1Revolution sounds better and is a cooler name, but I think the thought and marketing behind the name "Wii" is much better, especially for the "new audience" they were trying to attract with it.
