http://www.freeciv.org/ - omnithrope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5abandonware != free
- CatifshJones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A little from their F.A.Q.
Q: What is Abandonware? Is it legal?
A: ...Since the software is no longer sold or supported, the copyright holders are not directly harmed in any way. ...The distribution of copyrighted software however is, and will allways be, illegal! - rk_cr, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3Civilization 2 was always the best anyways.
- Achra, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3"Abandonware" is just a word that "moral pirates" (like me) use. It has no real meaning. Some of us think that when we buy a music CD, we're buying the right to listen to the music (in at least that quality) until we sell it. Not a crappy piece of plastic. Therefore, when my copy of Zeppelin IV dies (which I have purchased on various formats 5 times), I will feel just fine with downloading a fat torrent of that CD. "Abandonware" is not for sale anywhere, and believe me, I have approached Vivendi about offering the Sierra games for sale $5-$10 each on their website sans support. People would buy them, especially since they are currently spending a crapload of money paying the ESA to run around enforcing their bogus right to keep these great games in the bottom of the vault someplace. No, you won't find any Sierra games at Abandonia... The ESA. More game companies need to step up and Public Domain their old games like Infocom did with Zork 1-3. This is the real answer (for me).

- Jackel003, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Ummm, not only is this not legal, I'm fairly sure all the links in here are against Digg's TOS.
*Shakes head* No digg, obviously."
Lets all complain about a game that's nearly 10 years old and you can't find in stores anymore.. - Apreche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hooray! It's legal for me. I've still got the CD and the manual, but the CD is all scratched up. Now I can finally play again! I just wish I still could see the videos. Leonardo's Workshop video music was the best!
- blakholephysics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is pretty good for someone like me. i used to own civ 2 before civ 3 came out and i lost the cd for it.. it was a sad day. so i'm glad i now have a software copy of it.
- sock2828, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no mac os x :(
- Phaedrus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still have the CD for this game, maybe I keep things for to long
- TomFoolery, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Free as in "arrrr, me matey's."
- Novachew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, what about giving us a link to the civ2 download then? i can't find any :'(
- bsharitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can get Civ 4 for free just as legally as this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^^^ "only for windows though."
Freeciv is multiplatform. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/civilizationiv/download.html?sid=6140361
Demo for Civilization 4 - SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1legality is a state of mind, i'll take this version
- TheTitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ahhh, the good ol' days
- Mediaright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Freeciv sucks. I have to use X11 and the UI is near unusable. I want Civ2 for mac until freeciv gets it togeather. Geez. Peace of crap.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who *doesn't* own Civ 2, anyway.
But my install disk disappeared long ago, so this is great. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's little reason to pirate this game given that there is a legal alternative, freeciv. The main site seems to be down, however.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeciv - pinkfireball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1looks like theyve also got xcom
- sekyuritei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@pinkfireball
yeah, xcom was one of the most fun days for its time. There's a Pocket PC version floating around somewhere. Someone needs to port it to more handhelds or the web. - tj9991, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Everyone say it with me now
"Arrrrr!" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0another free alternative:

"The term has no legal meaning. This means that labeling any kind of software 'abandonware' does not make it legal to distribute it. Unless put in the public domain, any and all abandonware remains covered under copyright law." - Live4Soccer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Civilization 4 = Free
If you know what I mean...nudge, nudge...wink, wink...say no more.. - msomers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg, but it's gotten too popular -

- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Abandonware or not.. this game is great. I spent my childhood playing this game for hours back on my old macintosh quadra 610. Never owned a version for windows though.. so this is something to play with over the weekend (although need for speed most wanted and call of duty 2 are already installed on my hd...)!
- penguindude15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0only for windows though.
:-( - murthynikhil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The game colonization is also fun. Not really like the Civ games, but very fun and also innovative.
http://www.abandonia.com/games/59/download/Colonization.htm - dataset, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One thing to point out is that abandonia will link you to the developer's sites, if they provide a free version of the older game (such as the Arena link up there).
- STKD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Not sure if you want to purchase Civilization 4?"
No. So I downloaded the actual legitimate demo version which probably gives an even better idea of what Civ4 is like... - Diadem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Lol Prom.. also, http://www.abandonia.com/games/en/195/TheElderScrollsArena.htm
:P - sinjar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I already own Civ2. However, "Dink Smallwood" I do not:

- lixindi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Civ 2 was always my favorite.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0We'll plunder 'til she can't take it no more, Captain. Be us pirates we might but that ain't gonna stop us from pilfering all we can take!
- Diadem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I didn't have it. I do now.

You've been watching too much CSI.... - PrometheuZ, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I don't want to hear anymore about games until Pirates of the Burning Sea & The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion are released. :)
- Ravenlock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Ummm, not only is this not legal, I'm fairly sure all the links in here are against Digg's TOS.
