CONFIRMED: GameCube controllers CAN be used for Wii Virtual Console games
computerandvideogames.com — CVG interview with Nintendo confirms that you do not need the Wii Classic Controller to play Virtual Console games, GameCube controllers will work as well. Also, the Wii Remote can be used for NES games, while the Wii Classic Controller can NOT be used for GameCube games.

- Gremlinclr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+56Great news for folks that already own a GC. I'm glad I don't have to buy the Classic controller.
What I would love to see is Nintendo release some kinda dongle that plugs into the GC controller port that you could plug old NES, SNES and N64 controllers into and use them on the VC. I'd rather play an N64 game with a N64 controller.- Numfar28, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14That would be beautiful, yes. The analog sticks on my N64 controllers are screwed up a lot more than my GC ones, so I'd probably still prefer the GC controller there.
What would be REALLY great is if they'd make something to hook up to the Wii that accepts all NES/SNES/N64/etc cartridges to let you convert them to VC files. (or at least let you buy them for say 50% of the VC price?) Of course, that'll probably never happen. - icantdrawanime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Damnit... Now I've got no excuse to avoid VC games....
There goes my Wii budget - hammydude, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4this is really awesome, the gamecube controller ties with teh xbox 360s as my favorite controller
if only gamecube controller was wireless, then it would be perfect. The wave bird sucks though because it has no rumble and they changed it a little bit - darryl242, on 10/12/2007, -41/+3CONFIRMED: The Wii *IS* a GameCube!
- nizzy1115, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7Didn't we know this already? IGN's video walkthrough stated this.
- shadgenki, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Of course they can! Why wouldn't they be usable? LAME.
- AmazingAndrex, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1@hammydude:
I believe no VC games use rumble so it's really a non-issue. I mean, now you'll only use the GCN pads to play these games and Brawl.
Also, can Brawl use either controller? - jd5alive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11yes!! i didn't want to have to shell out the cash to buy multiple classic controllers just to play multi player virtual console games. now i don't have to even pay $20 for the first one.
somehow i feel richer.
DIG UP - Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Or you can just hold the remote horizontally. At least one Wii game supports this. The 1 and 2 buttons become A and B. No need to dig up a GCN gamepad :)
- W00DR0W, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Nintendo has confirmed this for some time.
- Buddhist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm hoping for a third-party add-on that would allow me to use one of my fifteen or so NES/SNES controllers, because I much prefer the NES and SNES controllers to the GC ones, they're too small, even for my small hands.
I'm just hoping that if they do make a 3rd-party add-on, that they won't jack up the price for it... - heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Sorry to hijack, but I just got 6 NEW Mario Party screens (not the tiny ones from before), it looks awesome!

- Numfar28, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14That would be beautiful, yes. The analog sticks on my N64 controllers are screwed up a lot more than my GC ones, so I'd probably still prefer the GC controller there.
- krayzie, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Anyone know if it is all GC controllers because I would love to be able to use my wavebird
- Numfar28, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16They've confirmed that the Wavebird would work for GameCube games, so I see no reason why not.
- grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wavebird works with the Wii, IGN Weekly 30 shows that it plugs into the Wii GC Ports just fine.
- kkaabboomm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4good confirmation that wii point cards aren't the only way to get wii points - all major credit cards are accepted through the wii shop!! 10,000 point max at any one time though.
- slickrick2k1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Are there any talks that you'll be able to DL stuff from the VC onto a DS? If so, oh man, that would be, oh man....
- Michalson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Unless they come out with a DS memory card, it would seem likely that such an ability would be limited to demos - basically turn your Wii into a DS download station in your home. On the other hand, that's actually a really good use, and would hopefully lead to more demo versions of DS games being made available. Try before you buy is always good.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6They already talked about having downloadable DS demos on the Wii. I'm fairly certain this will be a feature at some point, if not at launch. It helps them sell DS's to people that buy a Wii and don't have a DS already.
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I believe I have already read articles mentioning this. It seems like a very obvious use for the wireless link between the 2 systems. You'd probably also have a lot more variety of downloadable games via the Wii and the Internet. When I go to the download station at target, the most I've seen listed was about 6 or 7 games and videos.
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Party on Garth!
- 1773nium, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Party on Wayne! That just reminded me of something. I hope the put some of the older Mario Party's on the VC. I loved the one for N64.
- PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -28/+2there was a video on Digg already showing you that you can connect the controlles on the top of the system.... you guys r not real Wii fans.
- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Just because you can use Gamecube controllers on the system didn't mean they would be available for anything but Gamecube games. This confirms you can use them in place of the classic controller and save some cash...jackass.
- Numfar28, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Yes, every Wii fan knows GC controllers will plug into the Wii to play GameCube games. The news here is that they will work for Virtual Console games as well. If this has previously been shown in a video, I'd be interested in seeing it.
- jwasko, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4We knew they could connect to the console and of course be used for GCN games, BUT we didn't have confirmation (at least not that I've heard of) that you could use a GCN controller for VC games.
It's possible that they would have made you buy a VC controller for VC games just to make money off the controller sales. Thank you, Nintendo!
Edit: Hmm, looks like some people berat me to the explanation. Curse my slow typing!
- raptordrew, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7...Maybe I'm wrong, but didn't we already know GCN controllers would be able to play VC games? Did anyone else think this was already established? Maybe I had a brain fart - thank God it's Friday.
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I always assumed that the Gamecube controller and the classic controller would have similiar functionality... after all, they both have the SAME BUTTONS at very similar locations...
- RandomGuySteve, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3We assumed it would play VC games, but then again we also assumed it would play DVDs. At least some people did.
I wanted this info for the longest time, now all thats left is to pick up an extra controller at launch (which will be hard). - grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Classic Controllers plug into the Wiimote, Gamecube Controllers in the Wii itself. So while similar in button numbers, they are not identical.
One thing I am wondering: Are the L/R buttons on the Classic Controller analog or digital?
- foobar5892, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2When will the day come when I will be able to use my penis as a joystick?
- Mullinator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Just attach the Wii controller to your belt and it's a strap on...
- Chugaboy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Tonight Billy. Tonight.
*snickers* - TroubleT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Wavebird, FTW!
- socky, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2this my lucky day :)
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Wow, That sucks, I don't own a gamecube, But I was hoping I could get the four of the nice looking Classic controllers for gamecube games, Now i need to buy four gamecube controllers for Super Smash Bros for Gamecube. and but I really want at least 2+ classic controllers, for SNES and N64
I guess maybe I can just get two wavebirds, two wired GC controllers and two classic controllers, then when I play Super Smash Bros Wii my girlfriend and I can use the Classic Controllers, and my friends can share the wavebirds.
I was really hoping they were fully interoperable, That classic controllers would play all older games including gamecube, I figured that the only reason why the Dual Analog sticks make sense, N64 doesnt need them.
The dual sticks are probably for new classic control games like Smash Bros Wii, Those will probably use both since they were programed to know about the wii.- Numfar28, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hmm, good point, since the GC controller is the only Nintendo controller with two analog sticks, it would seem unnecessary to add one to a controller that won't work for GC games.
Would this mean that we'll be required to use GameCube/Classic Controllers for some future games? Doesn't sound very appealing. - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Super Smash Bros Brawl (The new Wii one) Uses either classic controllers or Gamecube controllers, The developer felt that the game would not work with motion sensitivity, and that the conventional control was better suited for the game.
- kryo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3""I figured that the only reason why the Dual Analog sticks make sense, N64 doesnt need them.""
The right stick most likely functions as the C-buttons on N64 VC games. - sulthernao, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Super Smash Bros. Brawl WILL allow you to use the normal Wiimote, but it will only have limited motion sensitivity.
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Smash Bros. is one of the few Wii games to maintain a standard control scheme. "I was given the task of creating Smash Bros.," explained Sakurai. "Of course, the topic becomes, how should we use the special remote controller? During the planning stages, we gave a lot of thought to this." In the end, Sakurai and his staff decided to not go too far with the controller, in particular avoiding being new just for the sake of being new, which Sakurai worried would make the game difficult to play.

Do you have something more recent saying otherwise? I would be interested in seeing it.
- Numfar28, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hmm, good point, since the GC controller is the only Nintendo controller with two analog sticks, it would seem unnecessary to add one to a controller that won't work for GC games.
- SirGecko, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0I had thought that this was accepted as true a while ago as well.
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Awesome. I panicked over availability and reserved a Classic controller a month ago. Now I can cancel that and go get me a Wavebird instead. It was something I was planning on having anyway.
- darryl242, on 10/12/2007, -19/+2Like this is news? The Wii is a GameCube... everyone knows that already. Why wouldn't you be able to use classic GC controllers? Someone should post an article about how the Wii plugs into various AC outlets around the world, I don't think that's been covered on Digg (yet).
Wiitard-tastic!- BurnedKirby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Dude, The wii isnt just like a gamecube. If you read the information, the Wii is a tower that can use the remote for games like baseball and other stuff for juking the ball or swinging the bat. It plays very good games and previous console games from gamecube to the Snes.
- undersky, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1hahhahaha nonetheless what u said was funny, hahahahahah, ac outlet, hahahha good one!
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+51. Wii is more powerful than a Gamecube, it's a fact.
2. No one knew for sure if you could use GC controllers for classic games, so this is indeed news and is very important to many gamecube owners.
Why is it that console bashers (anti-sony,MS,Nintendo, all of them) seems so incredibly dense? It's really too easy to see that Wii is far more than just a Gamecube. - raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Wii is "just a Gamecube" in the same way that a DS is "just a GBA".
Meaning that you can be sure anyone making either of those claims has completely missed the boat.
- scoyndizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is the good news I have been waiting to hear about the Wii!
No longer will I need to buy 3 (four if you count the nunchuck) freakin' sets of controllers just to take advantage of the wii's backwards capability. Plus I have siblings who want in on the multiplayer action so this saves me some money as well. - cjsedwards, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Burried as lame because this should have been an assumed.
- terrix, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3What do you mean confirmed? This has been common knowledge since E3, buried as lame.
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Well, this is good news, although I'm giving my GC and controllers (except my Wavebird) to my younger brothers when I get my Wii. I guess I don't actually need to get a Classic Controller, I'll still probably get on just because.
- Push2Flush, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this news makes me happy i bought my hori "gameboy player" controller for gamecube for like 10 bucks, its very close to a snes controller.
http://gamecube.gaming-universe.de/screengalerie/t_5131.jpg - Ratty, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I thought everyone knew this. There are photos of the wii with it's top flap open showing the GC controller ports.
http://www.cdrinfo.com/images/uploaded/Nintendo_Revolution1.jpg- krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4dude do you even read other posts? It is now CONFIRMED usable for VC. Previous to this it was CONFIRMED that the controller only worked with gamecube games. There are only about 30 posts above you that mention this.
- gardenia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, I was duped. I traded in my GC, and was going to keep my controller, but the GameStop employee told me I NEEDED the Classic Controller to play VC games but that it could also be used for the GC games. Thus, I traded it in and pre-ordered a classic controller, leaving me with nothing to play my GC games with!
You'd better believe I'll be going over there soon to put that $20 toward my console! - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Why is everyone on this thread getting dug down for no reason, Most comments are at 0 or -1
Its the conspiracy digg army I tell ya, http://digg.com/tech_news/The_secret_army_of_Digg_trolls ;) - WillDearborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They need to either sell original N64 controllers that work with wii or make an adapter. N64 games where meant to be used with that controller. I played the Gamecube version of OoT and it just isn't that same with the gamecube controller. And what about Goldeneye / Perfect Dark? That ***** just ain't gonna be right with gamecube controllers.
- Push2Flush, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Too many people arent realizing that this is NEWS about using the GCN contollers for the VC games, we ALL know the GCN controllers work for GCN games, don't make me throw in the infamous RTFA, cause ill do it if ya dare me...
- vawksel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Of course the GC controllers work! After all, the Wii is an overclocked gamecube!
Why does everyone assume "the Wii is an overclocked gamecube" phrase has a negative connotation to it? So what if it is. - wireframe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yuck. looks like digg changed their css. firefox looks aweful. the header and ads are all screwed up.
- finalbroadcast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is some impressive business sense. Making sure that their GC hardware sticks around for awhile. Allowing the more financially challenged customers to keep using older equipment for more than playing old games (looking at you PS2), but having an alternative with new equipment that is ascetically similar to the new system for all you design geeks.
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, while a very good controller, if the gamecube controller could be summed up in one word, Ugly.
Yes, I admit it, I'm a design geek.
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, while a very good controller, if the gamecube controller could be summed up in one word, Ugly.
- everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1REALLY? GAMECUBE CONTROLLERS ON THE WII? GEE, I KNEW THOSE GAMECUBE CONTROLLER PORTS AT THE TOP WERE MEANT FOR SOMETHING!
