- Burento, on 10/10/2007, -0/+52Just found a more detailed explanation on this story.
On Aug 1, 2007 a judge for the Superior Court of Kings County in Seattle, Washington handed down a foreign judgement in the amount of
$ 48,937,456.00 in the case of 1ST TECHNOLOGY LLC VS BODOG ENT GROUP S.A.
It is not known if Bodog, an international company operating exclusively out of the United States, was aware of the landmark decision handed down. Bodog was cited for failing to appear in court, however, few if any online gambling operators are willing to step on US soil following aggressive legislation and law enforcement actions against colleagues.
Most of the Bodog-related domains have been pulled. The company's new website domain (at least for the time being) will be www.newbodog.com. Calvin Ayre, founder of Bodog, has always insisted that his company's name is trademarked, one of the few online gambling ventures to do so.
1st Technology LLC is a leading technology licensing company with a patent portfolio of advanced Internet and multimedia innovations. 1st Technology is headed by Internet pioneer Dr. Scott Lewis who led the development of the world's first single integrated circuit chip with on-board video and audio compression, advanced adaptive digital signal processing technology at Oxford University, and introduced multiple broadband Internet and multimedia technologies. 1st Technology has a long list of industry leaders as licensees.
The violation relates to the Method for the production and transmission of enhanced multimedia information.
An optimization method is disclosed that enhances the interactivity of multimedia information. The optimization method includes separating a multimedia information into primary and secondary layers and enhancing that information in the primary layers such that the perceived psychographic information quality is improved. This method has the advantage of providing compression and/or transmission algorithms to maximize enhancement of the multimedia information.
"We are fighting this dispute and are confident that we will win," says Ayre. "I sincerely apologize to any customers affected by our interruption."
However, the online gaming giant continues to offer customers full service despite the domain dispute, with Bodog staff working through the night to get the alternative site up and running.
"Nearly all aspects of the website have been updated to reflect the environment our clients are accustomed to," says Ayre. "We are working to resolve any of the minor remaining glitches on the alternate site, but other that it is business as usual."
Untold monetary damage will most certainly result from Bodog's drastic loss of search engine optimization. For example: type in the search term "football betting" and while Bodog appears among the top 5 in Google, its link is now dead.
While the CalvinAyre.com blog is also dead, the Bodog Beat remains active. For Bodog, the action against it could not have come at a worst possible time. Traditionally, the first two to three weeks of football are the busiest of the year for online betting shops catering to the North American market place.

Strangley, this article cites a completely different patent, which actually seems more applicable:

The patent (which looks like it couldn't be any more obvious)

- WebGuerrilla, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1The Beat will be going down soon. They took control of over 3000 bodog branded domain names. But don't count Bodog out just yet. Calvin is a very resilient guy. I think he'll make it through this just fine.
- AnteChronos, on 10/10/2007, -2/+92Off topic, but the submitter needs to look into the etymology of the word "pwned". There's no 'o' in there for a reason.
- DeathJux, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I think the submitter may have some other loose screws in the brain: "wins a 50 million"?
- wattznext, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6How many 50 millions do you want him to win? 2, 3 ?

- redla, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1It probably comes from that video (something along the lines of 'If office meetings were like forum discussions') where some ***** keeps interjecting with 'powned' in a highly irritating voice.
- dontpisspploff, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1I think the submitter was trying to be clever in putting the o in pwned, since the company's name is Bodog. Thought it might be a play on words. He didn't quite get there.
- cygnus2112, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5I don't know who's worse. The dork who mispells "pwned" or those who think "pwn" is still a cool word after at least a decade and feel superior in correcting it's usage. I thought it was f***ing stupid when Team Fortress/Quake players started using it. My opinion hasn't changed.

- melonhedd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0How is it any less legitimate than "pwned"?
- AnteChronos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Because "pwned" is derived from a typo of "owned", where the 'p' key was accidentally hit instead of the 'o' key. Thus "pwned" is the correct usage of this particular meme. As a Grammar Nazi, I never thought I'd be arguing for the correct usage of a typo, but there it is.

- WebGuerrilla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Just a couple of clarifications....
The plaintiff did not receive 50 million and then buy the domains. They used the judgment to seize control of the domains. (over 3000 total). So far, they haven't received any cash from Bodog. I think the plan is to force Bodog to pay the judgment by threating to sell off the domains. But anyone buying them would be an idiot because once the new owner takes possesion, they would be hit with all kinds of trademark litigation.
Also, the fight league will continue to operate. The will just have to setup a new domain for now. - ChillEnt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Buried for "powned"

"Powned"
"and wins a 50 million."
This is not a classic story of a guy suing a company for a ton of money. This is a classic story of a patent-troll company suing a financially successful company on the basis of an unoriginal idea. Description paints the story in a ***** light; Bodog is the victim, not the victimizer. This whole thing is trash and should be resubmitted by someone else. - jlrolin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Bodog.com provides online gambling for sports, and pretty much anything else, including whether or not Nicole Richie will get married this year or next year. Pretty damn stupid, but they mainly own a few casinos and have a stranglehold on online gambling. Very rich people.
- shiplombo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ayre is worth $1Billion ... you don't think he can suck up a $50mil fine? those gambling degenerates will still throw their money away at newbodog
- idiotech, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0"powned"? "POWNED"?!
Brutal. It's pwned. Learn how to misspell properly. - Testies, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1US Goverment has been on this dudes ass for a while now because they consider online gamblin illegal. THey even made all major credit card companies stop making paymants to Bodog sites. Calvin has warrant for his arrest in the US so he can not step his foot there. (he is a Canuck). Most of his servers are somewhere in the Carribian.
Here is a short article on him.

The poster really needs to stop being such an idiot and look into what is really happening right now. No money was exchanged, the site was not "pwned" - I have a ton of links to government resources on my blog about this and am updating it constantly. Check it out. - ksimm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0One of the comments above mentions that Bodog has ... or at least had ... more than 3000 domain names. So it's interesting that they forgot to try to register calvinayrefoundation.org for Calvin's nonprofit organization. The url leads to a site that is clearly not part of the Bodog empire. It looks like Bodog is having some serious problems.
