- virologydustin, on 10/12/2007, -8/+125errr, that's Australian dollar prices
- Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -31/+139$999 for the console and $100 for the games is just ridiculous. You can get a mid to high range computer for that.
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -14/+118Wow thats just sad...
- Azerael, on 10/12/2007, -8/+111'Next-gen' started and nobody came.
- itsscience, on 10/12/2007, -12/+90in before ps3 fanboys try to spin this *****
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+79That's US$800. And don't even start on petrol (gas) :p
- Shizlanski, on 10/12/2007, -5/+79Heres a comparison for ya. The store i work at (BigW) sold all of the wii stock (about 30) on launch day.
Today we sold 2 ps3s. Nuff said. - Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -9/+82Umm, I am an Australian.
from Nintek (an Australia online shop)
Mid range Intel Core 2 Duo - ~$250-300
320mb 8800gts - ~$500, 640mb - ~$600,650
Basic mobo for these - ~$100-150
Rest of peripherals if you don't already have them wouldn't add up to a whole lot either.
May not be the best comp out there, but this comp would hold its own against the PS3. - DeskFlyer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+68Proof that Australian consumers are far more sensible than their American counterparts.
- twistadias, on 10/12/2007, -11/+75No big rush for the ps3 in NZ either
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -4/+51I was walking past EB the other day and I saw a big banner that explained you could trade in your Xbox or PS2 plus 20 games and get a PS3 for $699
...I hand over an xbox or PS2 plus TWENTY games and it STILL costs $700?!!??!
go to hell. - graystar, on 10/12/2007, -9/+56What is this thing you call PS3? Does that need electricity? We are still waiting for that.
(I am an aussie) - thomas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44I love the articles real title "Crowds go mild at PlayStation launch".
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -10/+51"From today, Sony will launch into its $6 million marketing campaign, which it hopes will convince the public that the PS3 is not just a games machine but an all-in-one home entertainment system.
The campaign will stress the inclusion of a high-definition Blu-ray disc player, sleek design, 60GB hard drive, web browser and, most importantly, the PS3's ability to act as a multimedia hub for organising photos, music and movies."
Why would I want another Multimedia centre, I already have a MM PC or I already have a DVD Player, Set top box with HDD, and Stereo set?
Whats the point of getting a BluRay player if I am only going to play DVD Quality video on my CRT?
Why do I need a dedicated web browser when I can do that easily on the PC, since it has a keyboard, and I done have to key in each character of a web address slowly one by one using the Control pad, not to mention squinting at the TV trying to make out the words on the web page from 2 - 3 metres away from the TV
Multimedia hub - I have a Multimedia centre with a 320GB HDD, why would I want something with a smaller 60GB HDD to manage all my videos, music and pictures? - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35You don't have to be an Xbox fanboy to think Sony is retarded, and their blu-ray trojan horse killed their gaming division.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -6/+381. I am a PC gamer
2. I would like to play the PS3 but would not like to buy it (price vs useful features to me currently, maybe in 3 years when I might own a HD TV)
3. I might get a 360 some time
4. I plan to get a Wii soon - DforSpiD, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34I think it's actually some sort of attachment for your boomerang ( I am also an Aussie)
- Moeface, on 10/12/2007, -13/+40Too late Sony. It's too late..
- kirk06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Oh the irony...NeoBOT.
That's cute...how you changed Xbox to Xbots, by pulling from your own username, as if to say all Xbox fans were mindless drones. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2923 Mar 2007:
US$0.8056 per A$1
= US$805 - chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Its not a piece of *****
Its just over priced, very over priced
and over packed with features that many Australians do not find appealing
such as
HDTV support (thus requiring that extra processing power)
Bluray - I haven't seen any titles in Australia, and again not a lot of people have a HD TV, also if they remove the drive The price should drop significantly
things that are not good about the PS3
no Emotion Engine as promised before, not just an emulator supporting about 40% of all PS1 and 2 games
no Rumble, sony considers it Last gen, and soon will re implement it...
Sony's Batteries (for six axis controller), well you seen what happened here with sony's batteries and laptops
Movie downloading ain't that big here, since we have Download caps of up to 60 GB (largest Ive seen for home users)
PS3's web browsing capabilities - pointless if you already have a computer, and browsing on an old CRT TV with low resolutions and a fuzzy image on some large but standard def TVs ain't all its cracked up to be - bunnybash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29As an Australian, i can say that in my side of of the country (Perth) i have a couple of mates who work at Harvey Norman, on Stock Rd, and they all have told me that a few people have come in and asked about the PS3 launch but most people walk away laughing when they are told the price. not only that but their demo PS3 unit sits idle for over 95% of the time, no one even looking at it.
most aussies i know think that sony is crazy trying to charge as much as they are.
i hang out with a lot of gamers, and i do not know anyone that pre ordered one of these, i agree with the articles skepticism of the figure of 20,000 from Sony.
so glad i kept those sony shares, between the laptop batteries and the ps3!!! :) - portis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31Yeah, like how they keep denying the Sony free HDTV giveaway in the UK was a desperate attempt by them to create some marketing stir.
- Romanito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25The best part was the "Xbox 360 loves you" boat passing in front of the PS3 event.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+24God, does anyone remember the mock-up pictures of the Sony controller? http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/ps-three-13.jpg
Maybe the PS3 has more to do with Australia than we think. - Xpoc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26First the UK pics than this. People bought them in the US to sell them.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -5/+27I will admit, I kind of feel bad for Sony.
But when you consider Australia's extremely small population, why 500 stores would stay open simply confuses me. Sure, Pitt St Myer's, but where else?
Actually Microsoft have pulled off some really huge events for Xbox promotions. There was a water fight one I think, and everyone who attended got 3 free games. This was *just* after the release of the Xbox 360 - so clearly they were worth a bit.
But as already mentioned, the PS2 launched at a rediculously high price too. It didn't take long for the price to fall, and it didn't take long for sales to pick up after that.
Here's an industry secret - I work at a huge electronics retailer in NSW and strangely enough, we don't sell PS3s (or any other video console for that matter). I do know though that the buy prices for one of our competitors is around $840 AUD. This means a price drop is very plausible, a $160 markup on a gaming console is HUGE. If expect to see some packages coming out soon, ie. PS3 with 2 free games or just plain ol' PS3 for around $900 or so.
The Wii and Xbox 360 have sold really well here so far, and the original Xbox and PS2 sold really well too. The Gamecube was a bit of a flop though =/
EDIT: Also forgot to mention Blu-Ray has not taken off in Australia yet at all. There were about 5 titles out as of today at retailer. You can probably buy them off the Internet and all, but there is about zero market penetration. We have a lot of 1080p LCDs, just very few Blu-Ray/HD-DVD content out there right now. - ladyarcher85, on 10/12/2007, -10/+31That should teach Sony a lesson!
"Desperate producers unashamedly asked the crowd to fake excitement when the cameras were rolling, while a team from 2Day FM let out bogus cheers to convince their radio listeners that a launch extravaganza was underway."
bwahahahahahahaha - chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20@deepmenace
"don't buy it then"
ok I wont, I never said I did, not soon anyways, too expensive for its features
"there's plenty of people out there who do need all that stuff"
probably less than 10% of the population
"also, you can upgrade the HD if you need to, and soo you'll be able to stream video wirelessly from other pcs in your house."
HD what? HD TV?
42" HD TV costs $1000 for a budget brand plasma
I'm holding out for OLED and Laser TVs
How can I stream video wirelessly through my house from PCs if I get a HD... thing
I already have a network of PCs and a Multimedia Centre PC in which I Stream video through another PC
I am slowly converting to wireless, but so far I'm getting around 2MBps wirelessly (54Mbps WiFi) vs 10MBps (100MBps LAN Cables)
"also, yes - there are lots of reasons to surf the net on your pc but there are a lot of reasons to do it from the comfort of your living room too"
Sure you got the couch
If I had a HD TV then yes I would do it, then I have my Multimedia Centre PC which has a keyboard for me to type in the web URL instead of using the controller to key it in (If I don't get/use a keyboard for the PS3)
"you are being very short-sighted"
Maybe, but for today, and maybe 1-2 years into the future these points may still hold
a couple things that will push the PS3
- Lower Price, getting rid of the Bluray helps here a lot, not many people in Australia will use it, due to lack of titles and lack of HD TVs, but when HD TV and HD Media does really take off the Bluray Drive would be used more, thus I suggest an Addon for a bluray drive instead of integrating it into the PS3
- HDTV craze, maybe soon with OLED and Laser TV technology, CRTs are built to last 10 years or so, and plasma TVs dropped in prices significantly around 2004 - 2005 so we might need to wait a several more years for those CRTs to die, and people buy Plasmas, well LCD/OLED/Laser TVs then - Zoctogon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Daza, extremely small population? 20 or so million isn't that small, especially when you consider that the vast majority of it is concentrated on the east coast.
- thushan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19What.... PS3 Launched last night? Damn I didnt even bother turning up to the local EBGames... I was too busy playing with the kangaroo's in the backyard to notice...
Did they give out any free HD TV's and a taxi ride home by any chance? - GravitySpec, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18/me smacks zarchon upside his head...
Not US currency... -_- - consolekid21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Same for Europe. In Paris only *60* were sold and 1000 were available...
http://www.consolenewsblog.com/5661-big-ps3-midnight-launch-in-paris-60-ps3s-sold/
Sony PR honchos take note, the PS3 is crashing even in 'Sonynation Europe'. - Lemonblood, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23The TV shows here REALLY hyped it up, I went down to the local EB Games store (Warringah Mall) and there was no one there. Even in the TV videos there weren't many people..
I heard the PS3 was *****.. - AJayD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Whoever thaught of the caption "The croud goes mild" is near enough a genius.
- supersaw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17$999 AUS for the console and about $5000 for a decent 1080p TV that it's actually worth playing on.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18I was waiting a story about the Australian PS3 launch
I didn't see any one camp out at any EB Games or Myers or Games Wizards at 9pm (late night shopping)
I only saw the odd child playing the PS3 at Games Wizards, but no one bothered staying to watch or wait to play or anything - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15No, it's not sad.
The mates are smart. I wouldn't freakin' pay that much for the console, EVER. It would have ben 10 times more sad if the people bought it, sending SONY the message of "more please!!!".
VERY GOOD NEWS. I would digg this twice. - eunichs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I am in New Zealand and the console is going for $1200 NZD here. (compare to the Wii at $499, Xbox 360... cant remember the price).
It was funny to see that the people who pre-ordered the console in November last year got to the stores at launch time to see a load of people wander in from the street to make an impulse purchase after seeing the interest free finance promotions that most of the stores are running, and they all got their consoles at the same time! And still heaps lining the shop floors too... Oh well I get the feeling that this console's hardware is a bit ambitious for the current software, and that the PS3 might not pick up for a year or so, but will be around for a while. - chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Remember the GHz race?
now its the $1k race for consoles
and Sony hit it first - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+12chingy1788 raises one of the most forgotten about negative points regarding the PS3.
Australia's Internet.
As much as it may be improving, there are still people in built up areas that simply cannot get broadband. And if they can, they are limited to 512 kilobit speeds. If they can get Internet, at 512 kilobit, they probably have a download limit of no more than 15GB/month. Only very few people have higher end plans. Exceed your quota and you either pay at bare minimum $3/GB or your Internet is slowed down to 64 kilobit speeds. The PS3 is a few years ahead of Australia, I think Sony know this as they even inflated it's price accordingly. See you in a few years, PS3. - Shanobi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I've said it before and I'll say it again, people don't believe this hype about hi def being the next gen. If they did, the 360 would have sold 20 million units by now, and the PS3 would be dominating out of the gates.
People in general still believe that the PS2, Xbox, Gamecube still have great looking games that still play just like the "next gen" games. Very few people are weak enough to be hornswaggled into buying a new system that plays games the same way as the last system, but better looking.
It might have worked after the PS1 and the N64, because there was much room for improvement, but the last generation put up amazing looking stuff, RE4 and God of War 1 and 2 for example.
There was a study done back in the 80's, about why it was that gamers didn't leap from the 2600 to the 5200. The study concluded that while the graphical leap was important, gamers felt themselves becoming bored with the way in which they were playing the games, and that the most important thing the study found was that innovation was what gamers were most looking for.
Which I think pretty well explains Nintendo's recent successes with both the DS and the Wii.
Besides, I think we're at a point where people say to themselves "why should I go spend 700 dollars on a gaming system, when for less than that I can upgrade my computer and play better looking games?" - Sewende, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10And I have a lion as a pet in my backyard! (I live in South Africa)
- paulcoves, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10On a side note, Australian free to air tv news shot/edited stories about the PS3 launch sales that made it look as if there were queues of punters all over the country queuing then rushing in to stores at midnight to buy one. I wonder if that was to justify the expense of sending news crews out at midnight, or simply product placement by Sony?
- scratt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17*yawn*
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@chingy1788
yes i have long suspected sony's influence on the australian TV networks. I have found them to be overly positive about BluRay and completely ignoring HD-DVD. these PS3 shenanigans is more proof. Surely PS3's disappointing sales is a better story than a story about a lot of people buying it. I can only assume they have other reasons for ignoring the obvious story. - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -2/+11Zoctogon, yes we do have an extremely small population, if you want to compare the Australian launch to either the UK launch or the US one. Even though 90% of people live on coastlines, we still have a very small population. Why on earth would there be 500 stores open?
No matter how cheap or how good the PS3 could have been, there was never going to be a huge rush at more than a few outlets around Australia. Sorry. - thomasprebble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+101200NZD. I've heard stories of stores selling it at the "special introductory price of 1700NZD".
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Every time I go to Target or walmart, the PS3 kiosk is never even powered on in either store and the PS3 inside it is visibly collecting dust. In the glass cases there's always an untouched stock of PS3's. Crazy to think how this once very successful brand could be such a miserable failure this time around. But then as I was playing Smackdown '07 on the 360 kiosk it froze up. Both cases are pretty funny as I'm not a console gamer, Though I might get a Wii someday since it actually offers something interesting for my money.
