Angry Gamer says: Dear Sony, It's Over

angry-gamer.net — Angry Gamer writes a long, impassioned break up note with Sony. If it wasn't the PSP, the stupid giant crabs, the insane remarks by Ken Kutaragi or the over the top price...it would have been something else. Today's announcement of the PlayStation 3's delay in PAL territories to March 2007 is the final straw. Read the note here.

Good, but not robust. Sony can announce a new color for the PS2 and get more buzz that Microsoft could for a new game release for their uber-console.....

      Sony is making a play for the PC gamer, the home entertainment system buyer, for the folks that want the latest technology, but are going to hate Vista....its a broad positioning that will undercut not just the Xbox 360, but cement Sony's console lead position, and potentially disrupt PC sales for gamers on the fence.

      And Sony does not care about Nintendo: Nintendo has been positioning Wii as the "second console" in a house...the signal they are sending is one of co-existence, not of rivalry.

      For my part, I'm going to wait and see. Bonuses roll in in March...if the titles are rocking, this may be a must buy.

Either way, both shall triumph over the ps3 because, well, as Penny Arcade puts it, Sony hates gamers. They have been pretty clear about this. The whole scrolling thing is pretty crappy too. I have tried the PSX (which is about as close as one can get to playing the PS3 right now without being a member of the industry), and scrolling through THAT many videos is insane. I say, if you are a sony fanboy and don't want to change, try and get your hands on the psx instead of the ps3.

    I'm sorry that it's come to this, but there was really no other way for me to tell you how I feel. By the time you read this I will be gone.     Remember back in May, when when you showed me that stupid wireless controller thing that nobody else wanted? That was a rough time for me, and all my friends told me that I should leave then, but I stuck it out and I thought we worked past it. I was determined that our future together with the Play Station 3 was going to be worth all the troubles. Blue Ray! Metal Gear Solid 4! It was such a beautiful dream and I wanted it to be true no matter what.

    Then you unvieled the price. Six hundred ***** dollars! Do you even know how much that is? And then there's the exorbitant markup that you gave the European market. I can't afford that. Nobody I know can afford that. And then you tried to placate me with excuses about how it's cheaper than other things, like that fancy computer from Tron. And like a fool i believed you! I even put down a pre-order! Looking back now, I realise i was being naive and that you were just using me for cheap thrills. Well, no more.

    Today was the breaking point. Delaying the PlayStation 3 to March 2007 because you couldn't make enough machines in time is the ultimate betrayal. Remember that slide show you put up at E3, Sony?

    It said November 17.

    Not March 2007.

    And then there's the reduced American ship numbers and the paltry Japanese launch - how long until you start letting me down on those promises, too? I can't wait for you to show me any sign of commitment any more. It's over. I've returned my pre-order slip. The lies, the delays, the embarassing press conferences...I've had enough. You can keep your precious Japanese and American release dates. Your pathetic indifference to the promise you made to me about the November release date show you just don't care about my happiness. ***** you, you selfish prick.

    I've found someone else. They're reliable. They're here for me. They have a cool range of cheap games. Even that Assassins Creed game that was apparently just for you. It's an Xbox 360 and we're going to be happy together forever now that I'm finally rid of you.

      Microsoft *claimed* 1.5 million units shipped by Dec 31, 2005. NOT launch day in November!!!!! Sony expects to ship 2 million by Dec 31, 2006 but only have 500K ready on launch day.

      NPD reported 607,000 sold in North America in 2005, which is much lower than Microsoft's numbers indicate.

He was similarly all "OMG THIS IS THE LAST STRAW, U SUCK" in his tone. 3 years later, with HL2, Ep1, CS:S and DoD:S in our hands, it's difficult to imagine anyone still being as upset at Valve as the letter writer was then.

    I expect Sony and the PS3 will probably turn out the same way in 3 years time. Sure it'll still have those who don't like them much, but whenever is that not true.

      Letters like that (esp for PC games) are common. I can't recall how many I saw for Diablo 2 back in 2000, but they're basically venting anger. I had the same feelings pretty much and hated that Blizzard took exceedingly long, but when the game out everyone was happy (for the most part) and Blizzard is still huge, they never lost much of their fanbase because it was just one mark on a very excellent record.

      With Sony, it's bad news, every - single - day. It's blow after blow after blow and only the most hardened Sony fans are sticking with them. I gave up on ANY idea of purchasing a PS3 well after I saw the competition and what they are offering. I _hated_ the x-box and considered it a "halo-box" but the 360 is looking to improve the one-hit-wonder status. I don't even need to mention how attractive the Wii is...

      Sony ***** up, people will only stay loyal so long, and every person has their point of no return. This will NOT be a false promise for many, including me.

I don't play games as a competitve activity online (except in the case of Starcraft, and I dabbled with PS2 online b/c it was free, but never got interested). I would never pay $50 a month to play XBox 360 online, and the games geared toward single player include GUN, Tomb Raider, Hitman, Elder Scrolls, and Dead Rising. The first three I can get for PS2 cheaper, the next I can get for PC but I don't like it anyway, and the next demands HD to be able to read the mission objectives. . .yeah. . .

      The PS3 has more to offer the single player gamer - like MGS, Devil May Cry, Jak and Daxter, Final Fantasy XIII, Mercenaries 2, and Gran Turismo (many car enthusiests have a PS2 just for GT and no, Forza is not comparable). Different people have different tastes. I bet more people on Digg have played Halo than Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, but San Andreas outsold Halo 2. The single player market is the majority. They usually don't get online and discuss games on websites such as this and they don't like FPS. They exist, and you'll feel stupid when they line up in droves to hopefully have a PS3 before X-mas. I will own every system necessary to play every Metal Gear Solid and Legend of Zelda game. Many gamers are similar, often with other games, but many of those games are exclusive Sony properties (SOCOM, for example, has a huge cult following). So a PS3 gives me MGS4 and exclusive next-gen games from the developers of Shadow of Colossus. . .sign me up. It's worth a couple hundred bucks to me, if not for these games I would not game. I come here for the news, not to have people make fun of my future purchase because they think their competing product is cooler. It's like when people act like I'm strange for using a Mac - ***** off, I have different interests than you, it doesn't make them stupid. We should be making fun of the people who spend $600 on a video card every six months, not the guy who buys a video game console/HD movie player that really shows off his new ginormous T.V.
