Are you typing this in Windows? - iruel, on 10/12/2007, -10/+44If this is true than Sony is responsible for the fall of the Dreamcast. That is an unforgivable crime.
- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -27/+57Add this to the SONY Root Kit fiasco and I have yet another reason to NEVER AGAIN BUY A SONY PRODUCT.
Too bad to. I actually used to like SONY a lot. I sure bought quite a few of their products. - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -20/+47> popularme wrote: "i wouldn't be surprise if this ***** gets on the front page. lately, it is cool to hate on Sony."
Yeah, it's just so damned hip to be pissed at a company who screws its customers left and right.
What's wrong with you? - LiquidRain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23This article is full of lies.
The Dreamcast did not "die after a month" with games being halted. It lasted for quite a while after that before Sega pulled the plug. At least 2 years. There are countless other facts wrong here.
Poorly written, full of fanboyism just trying to lash out at Sony. Probably a former Sega fanboy turned MS fanboy. I'm a former Sega fanboy myself, now a Nintendo one, but lies do not belong anywhere in a "console war." And DEFINITELY not on the Digg front page.
Marked as innacurate. - mykelefty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19that article was just loaded with too many facts for me to handle. i'm glad he included so many sources from his research.
- thedigimonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Sorry guys, I am no fan of Sony's gaming products, but I have to point out:
1.) This really is a terribly written article. I don't know why you modded down the other person who mentioned this. The grammar, sentence structure, etc. make it sound like it was written by an eighth grade dropout.
2.) On top of this, there are no citations. While some of the information in there may be true, there's absolutely nothing backing it up, and again, it's so poorly written I don't feel compelled to put my faith in it.
3.) I'll freely admit that Wii is the only console I plan to buy this generation, but don't forgot how cutthroat NINTENDO'S business tactics were when they were on top. For instance, they intentionally produced very few copies of Mario 3 at launch to drive up demand and get gamers to buy other games instead while they waited, and threatened stores with similar things to what's mentioned in this article.
4.) Yes, I know, my grammar isn't perfect and I didn't cite any sources in my comment either. Go ahead and mod me down! - mgainor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21"Sony began spreading rumors of faulty hardware throughout the Internet..."
Not going to back that one up with any evidence? Okay. Article is less than worthless.
"Class Auction Lawsuit"
Hahahaha this was written by a second grader. - sfmman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26@arunforce, just because someone didn't BUY a Sony CD with a rookit doesn't mean they can't hate them for it.
Just the fact that Sony would do something like that is sick - pixelsoup, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I'm not a big Sony fan, but there's not a lot of compelling facts in this story to make me hate them more. I suspect most large corporations play these sorts of "games" for profit. If you like a product and your gut says the company deserves your money, buy it. Otherwise don't.
- bob301, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I bought a PS2 the Christmas of launch, and it still works great. Even used it as my DVD player for 2 years, and it never stopped reading discs.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22yeah, I have an original launch PS2, like day of launch PS2, it still works fine. I've clocked hundreds, if not thousands of hours on it between me, my bro, and my sister. I've only opened it once to clean the fan out of dust when it started to overheat and crash. this was like 4 months ago
- cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25"You can say whatever you want about Sony/BMG being a separate division, but that's a lame excuse. These divisions work together all the time (ie. everything under the Sony umbrella working together to push Blu-Ray)."
So then is it okay to hate the Xbox for what Microsoft has done not only to it's competition but to it's customers as well? Or is this just one of those crazy "double standards" I keep hearing about. - Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Interesting conspiracy theory, but he lacks hard evidence.
- einfeldt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17This article is spam, and it has a suspiciously pro-Microsoft slant. I'm not say that everything on digg that is pro-Microsoft is spam. However, the tone of this particular article is singularly suspect. Check out this passage for example:
"On November 22nd, 2005, just over a week ago, Microsoft launched the highly anticipated
console in USA and Canada. They shipped an estimated 400,000-500,000 units. Now this is not
enough to meet demand of course, but Xbox 360 is doing an unprecedented worldwide launch."
Doesn't that sound like it was written by someone in a marketing office? There are numerous examples of that throughout the article. I'm personally reporting this story down as spam, and I would encourage others to do likewise. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22He uses MS Cockinmouth 2007 (it crashes because it's beta) to write his articles.
I do disapprove of some of Sony's tactics though. Yeah, I know, who cares.
But why do people feel like they must support one bad company over another? Screw both of them. You, as a consumer, should just look for the best product, period. Why do you care who made it? - horrorpunk, on 10/12/2007, -18/+31i dunno...good article...even if the author does have MS's ***** in his mouth
- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -16/+29> popularme wrote: "wow..you're must be really stupid to let a company screw you."
No, I'd only be stupid if I gave them the chance to do it again. But I won't so there ya go. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Remember too that Sony produces both music AND movies, and is a major member of both the RIAA and MPAA.
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Reported as innaccurate.... Not one fact in this article is soruced... He is making up most of this crap.
Examples:
"Xbox was the
second console to ever take on online gaming"
1. Dreamcast
2. Ps2
3.Xbox
So thats wrong...
"Over 1/3 of these launch systems (100,000) broke within days,"
If they mean the "Disk Read Error" problem, that only happened a few years after the pruchase. Where does he get these numbers?
"the actual number of
working PS2s in homes is closer to 50-60 million."
Where did he get that number... out of his ass.
"forcing people
to either buy a new system, or pay them to repair the issues. "
Or not get another system and save the money...
" Xbox Live now has over 2 million users, and operates on
both the Xbox and Xbox 360 flawlessly"
I get connection interrupted errors all teh time... far from flawlessly.
"ask the clerk there even, and I guarantee you,
70% of the time you will get a negative response"
Wrong.. the clerk wants to sell something, not bad mouth it.
-- Come one, this was a poorly written article, on a horribly designed site. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18my ps2 still works and i got it about one year after launch
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Kudos to the idiot who posted an opinion piece with the title "Valid reasons to hate SONY". Congratulations, you made the front page.
Anyone can get on the internet and write anything they want. Give me sources and evidence. Compare and contrast with practices of other companies. Summarize and present facts. Let us decide. We do have brains you know. For all we know, this could be a piece planted by MS or Nintendo, just what the article accuses SONY of doing.
But I guess sensanalization and pandering to the masses is why FOX news also makes it money. - arunforce, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20I wonder who has been spreading rumours about the PS3 not allowing you to rent/trade games?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10i've got a pretty old one too and i know for a fact that it has over 1000 hrs (my socom online accounts tell me so(and those are only clocked while playing actual games)) back to the point, the only time my PS2 had a problem was when i yanked it off a book shelf by accident...mailed it to sony, they fixed and sent it back for free, no $100 charge for me...
- apetrie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I love(d) my dreamcast..
- arunforce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The only problem I had with my PS2 is my Laser Reader got dirty. (I've had mine for 4 years.)
I take care of my PS2, and thats the difference between most people, they treat their electronics like trash. (A kid I know stuck Peanut butter in his PS2, and wondered why it didn't work?!) - swimmingbird67, on 10/12/2007, -13/+22so then just don't buy sony's product. no need to bash.
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Nintendo did the same thing against Sega before
- orlandogeek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13My PS2 was purchased at 12:14am on the night of release. Still works just like it did on day one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9inacurate it is.
talking about sony spreading rumors, by spreading rumors. - thejokker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This is an interesting read, but how much of this is simply an opinon? References to Sony planting rumors, or demanding the removal of Sega ads, where is the fact here. I take this with a grain of salt. Most business try hard to win market share, Microsoft, nintendo and sony all do what they can to make their product look the best.
I dont care for some guys/groups opinion on the sony corporation. - miles32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Still evidnece needs to be submitted and put together otherwise no one will believe you.
- iamanalog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Meh not to good of an article, but some interesting opinions in there. To me though you can say Microsoft does the same thing, but whatever if the system is good and has good games ill buy it. Right now i have 2 dreamcasts on the shelve under my tv and then under then is a ps2, now i completely love my DCs but i still love alot of ps2 games.
- sinfony, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It sounds like a bad writer trying to pretend that he is a good writer. The article is more pro-Dreamcast than anything else.
- Talisian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8 I'm not a Sony lover either but how is anything that's on the linked web page substantiated?
- orlandogeek, on 10/12/2007, -15/+21Obvious bias. No sense in reading that through to the end.
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13I dont care if sony is a bunch of dumbasses or not..if they release a good product, such as the ps2 or the psp, i will buy it. Just like microsoft and XP, only my copy of xp is off a burnt cd.
- Paintwiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I haven't even scrolled down yet and it already looks like a fan boy/lying scum type of article. I still have my Dreamcast ( and play it with mu little bro) and I was more mad at Microsoft for buying up one of its game sequels. It is almost like the writer didn't even own a Dreamcast.
- fgsfds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sega didn't make mistakes with the Dreamcast, actually. However, they made a long chain of horrid mistakes leading up to that. Namely, they burned their market too many times with the Nomad, the SegaCD, the 32X, the Saturn, and quite a few other consoles and console add-ons all on sale either at the same time or within a very short period of time of each other.
When the Dreamcast came out, it was the first piece of *good* hardware they produced in a long time, and unlike the Saturn it was designed to be much easier to develop games for. However, Sega had rubbed one too many cigar butt out in it's consumer's faces, and they didn't want to live through another Saturn.
Of course, Sony's PR sabotage didn't help Sega any - if it wasn't for that, the system would have picked-up and gone strong once people realized that it wasn't just going to be abandoned after few months like the older Sega systems.
Still, in it's lifetime it hosted some of the greatest games of it's generation; from Jet Set Radio and Chu-Chu Rocket to Skies of Arcadia and VO:OT.
Also, the article is inaccurate about the XBox360 having a record breaking launch. IIRC, the gamecube sold more units faster. (I would cite a source, but don't have one handy.)
The 360 also faced completely dismal sales in japan - it took *two days* to sell the first 50k-60k systems, and the 150k number cited in this article was the number that *shipped* to retailers. ( http://www.cnet.com.au/games/xbox/0,39029621,40059021,00.htm )
Hate Sony all you want; God knows they've earned it many times over after all.
However, hate them for really good reasons, not for stupid and/or fake ones. - NiceGuyVan, on 10/12/2007, -25/+31I dunno, I feel Sony delivered on PS2.
- silvaran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'd have to agree. The article is old (November '05) for starters, though that's minor compared to the rest of the article. This guy seems like a Microsoft fanboy. He cites NO references, most of the article is purely speculation, and to top things off, the images cover up the text when viewing under FireFox. Also, Ctrl F for Revolution. You won't find it in the article (and, obviously, you won't find Wii either :). You'll only see two references to Nintendo, this article has nothing to do with the Wii. I don't know if that's a submitter mistake or an article mistake, but, IMHO, the entire article is crap.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5they forgot to mention the fake sony psp graphitti that was sprayed all over in big cities, like chicago, and was then quickly defaced by real graphitti artists...
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14"In all reality, I think Sony can try and do what they will, but the 360 is already entrenched and the Wii has too much positive press for Sony to hope for even a sizable portion of the market share they had with PS2."
Not true at all... I would say 99% of gamers don't do crap like read joystiq, and digg... So any Polls you see are horribly skewed with fandboys.. I know I'll get a wii, but just about everyone I know is getting a ps3 and thinks the wii is stupid.. Also, just about everyone I know doesn't read digg or know about gaming sites. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Sony used to be an incredible company. I remember being amazed at their competence in creating slick, useable, honest consumer electronic products. The success of the PS1 and PS2 seemed like the natural culmination of a long history of fine management and technological know-how. So what the hell happened? It seems like in the span of a couple years they've suddenly made every bad decision they possibly could while burning away all the goodwill they once had. I'd really be interested to hear from some Sony employees to see if there was some sort of bad management culture shift inside the company or something.
- Dari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"PSP is garbage. in 2 years you'll be buying UMD's off of ebay because no one will be selling them."
UMD movies aren't meant for people like us. That's what the memory sticks are for.
"i hope this article wasnt written by any of my students... damn."
I hope you're not an English teacher.
"sony did try to shut dreamcast down. sega was stupid for falling for it."
Nope. Sorry. You lose. Sega made mistakes with Dreamcast on their own, Sony had nothing to do with it.
"i've had 3 PS2's in 5 years... that sucked. but i've has 2 XBOX 360's in 2 months. that sucked worse."
I've had my PS2 since launch day. Still works exactly as it did the day I got it. I've waited to get a 360 because of the issues reported at launch (Don't get me wrong, I waited in line and failed to get one at first...).
"because of the $600 [rice tag, ill be waiting until 3 blu ray movies come out before i even think of buying a ps3"
So you're not buying a game console based on the fact that no movies are avalible for it. Blu-Ray is launching before November, in case you didn't know. - pjsk8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6What does that have to do with anything?
- theRobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6got bored after the 2nd paragraph. no digg.
- Etheo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I can't bring myself to believe this article unless it offer some valid proof. So far it's only been storytelling instead of anything concrete that you can believe. Then again, as long as this article is in a competitor sided site (xbox360/wii), it's always harder to trust because it could have just been a one-sided thing. I'd like to actually hear something from a Sony site, but who'd dig up their own dirt?
- maddonkey, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14thats why i love my old atari
- mage1129, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Your comments remind me of when xbox first came out and everyone talked about an overheating problem.
