- Konstantino, on 01/16/2008, -1/+27Dugg for the inclusion of the little Line Rider guy :)
- kingmanic, on 01/16/2008, -3/+16Hence the iPods smash success there? American import cars do reasonably well too. It's actually the fact that MS doesn't market it much or well in Japan. Playing the racism card just makes you look dumb.
- jacksons98, on 01/16/2008, -2/+11The problem with X360 only doing well in north america is that you start to lose developer support from other regions as well. That is why the original Xbox became known as a shooter console. X360 is following the same path, if it doesn't start doing better in Europe and Japan as a X360 owner you will miss out in terms of variety of gaming titles.
- kingmanic, on 01/16/2008, -2/+10The 360 does well only in the US. Everywhere else not as well. I mean everywhere. No as abysmally as in japan but it's not much of success in any of the other markets.
- TheNik, on 01/16/2008, -4/+12Wow, the 360 sales are depressing. I feel kindof bad. :(
- jacksons98, on 01/16/2008, -1/+9Or it could be the majority of big hit games on X360 have been shooters a genre that has little to no appeal with the Japanese. Secondly X360 has horrible quality and engineering, another thing the Japanese value.
- KingGoonie, on 01/16/2008, -1/+8Really?
- aldenhg, on 01/16/2008, -4/+11Yeah, Microsoft just doesn't do it for the Japanese market. I'm guessing it's for the same reason that games like Mr. Mosquito don't do well in the US.
- Coldmetal, on 01/16/2008, -2/+9It's ridiculous seeing how well the PS 2 is selling compared to the Xbox 360. What's out of control is seeing the Nintendo DS pull out a 500,000 sold in a single week. I'm glad to see Nintendo has picked itself out of the ditch it dug itself into last generation ( with the Gamecube, which I thought was a great console, but apparently a lot of other people didn't ) and is doing remarkably well in Japan. PS 3 is looking like those sales will increase with the cost of the PS 3 decreasing.
- fotbr, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7All made with parts from japan, korea, and china.
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -8/+15Had no idea the 360 sold so little over there.
- Dracusis, on 01/16/2008, -1/+8"like one of the comments on the webpage, there are too many FPSs for the Xbox and not enough dating sims"
So, American kids just want to shoot each other, but Japanese kids just want to make love. Kinda reminds me of something Paul McDermott (DAAS) once said:
We think we're more intelligent than dolphins because we can build cities and have advanced technology to wage sophisticated wars, they just swim around in the sea all day long. However, the dolphins believe they're more intelligent than us for the exact same reason. - Mypam, on 01/16/2008, -1/+7Sports games and FPS games are not as popular as they are in US.
The Asians don't like XBOX360 games, period. - Tyrghast, on 01/16/2008, -1/+7I like the nice spike for the PSP about the time the new one came out last year.
- Destinatus, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5wtf are you talking about?
- YouRookies, on 01/16/2008, -3/+8I'm tired of seeing so much hate against the Japanese gaming culture. If the Japanese were "racist" why the hell isn't the PS3 selling like hotcakes? Like normal people, we are waiting for it to get some solid AAA titles and drop in price. As for the 360, why the hell would they get one when you can play FPS on PC with FREE online gaming? Halo? I'm sorry, there are much better FPS like Orange Box, CoD4, and UT3. Get some more exclusive AAA games on either system and they will both start selling.
- Dracusis, on 01/16/2008, -1/+5That was probably more because of the PSP Final Fantasy game that was released in Japan at the same time.
- kingmanic, on 01/16/2008, -4/+8Lookup iPods there,
Your grasp of Japan is poor,
Ugly American. - inactive, on 01/16/2008, -7/+11Meh, I like my 360 and it's western games. Doesn't really matter if the Japanese like them or not, they'll always sell well in the west.
- snapuswipe, on 01/16/2008, -1/+5I remember hearing that early on, the /Wonderswan Color/ was outselling the 360.
Although the PS3 doesn't seem to be doing well in the US (can't say about Europe), its sales in Japan are helping balance it out. Overall, the PS3 is doing generally well; it's just not doing as well as the PS2 did.
Seems Microsoft has made quite the comeback though. - Dracusis, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4I didn't know you could be "racist" against a product.
But if that's true, then you could also argue that "all those Americans" are racist because they're buying more 360s than PS3s. But the truth is, the cultural experiences offered by the 360 (Shooting people online) just don't fit well into Japanese culture. What was the last multiplayer shooter you can remember coming out of a Japanese game studio? If the Japanese, as a culture, have grown to embrace games without native language shooters, then it should come as no surprise that they flock to alternatives genres, and if you take away all of the shooters from the 360 you're really not left with much.
This is the main reason why I've always been behind the PS3. I have a PC for shooters, but I also enjoy what the Japanese bring to the gaming table and to get that I need a PlayStation, or a Nintendo, but I'm a growing very weary of Nintendo's lack of new IPs in the last decade and I'm a self confessed HD whore. - kingmanic, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3PS3 costs more in the US because the currency took a noise dive in the last 8 years. The 360 is similarly priced after currency conversion. IT launched at 40,000 yen or roughly $362.81USD at todays conversion rate.
- gullevek, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4The only people I know who own a xbox360 are foreigners, not a single japanese friend has a xbox, they hall have at least a DS, or a Wii, Ps3 is still rare to see.
- Dracusis, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3You're all wrong, the reasons are much simpler.
Japanese gaming culture flocks to different genres that the 360 just doesn't cater too that well. Quick, name 3 AAA online multiplayer shooters released by a Japanese company in the last 6 mnths?
Having trouble?
Name 3 online shooters released in the past 6 months by US/European companies?
COD4
UT3
TF2
Halo 3
ET: Quake Wars
Crysis
I could go on, but I won't.
Now, if you take *all* of the online shooters away from the 360, seriously, would you buy it?
That's why the 360 has failed in the Japanese market. The Japanese gaming culture has developed without the heavy influence of native language online shooters. - SeldonPsych, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Japan has very few casual gamers, which make up a large percentage of Xbox360 owners in america. In japan, kids and families play Nintendo, and otaku (maniacs) play playstation. There are no adults who want to casually play the occasional FPS or sports game over the internet, which is what Xbox360 is best for.
- triplehelix, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3the 360 has sold about 560,000 in japan, the ps3 has sold about 3,590,000 in japan. not even in the same realm of sales.
- gerbco, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2I don't know how much longer I will hold out for a PS3 but It doesn't seem like sony's home turf is in much of a rush either...although the late pick up is encouraging. this console war is great for fanboy wars and for the business short- term but long term it can be brutal
- kingmanic, on 01/16/2008, -1/+3They are in fact very xenophobic but they actually idolize Americans.
Tier 1: Japanese/Anglo American
Tier 2: Asian American
Tier 3: Everybody else not in tier 4
Tier 4: Immigrant workers - ericrous, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2To all you doubters, Japanese nationalism and xenophobia is a very long-standing and well-studied phenomenon. This is nothing new. It's what drove their ambitions to invade China and attack the U.S. during WWII, for crying out loud!
Study some history, you dumbasses! - kingmanic, on 01/16/2008, -2/+4Basically you are saying to Japanese people buy things that appeal to their sense of style... wow. Just as Americans enjoy things that appeal to their sense of style as well. Remember everyone of you arguements could describe any countries buying pattern. Remember no fear, remember how it spread liek wild fire and everyoen was wearing it. RememberTommy hilfiger, or any of the fads. Everyone is sheep regaurdless of nationality. They dress to suit their own sense of style and their sense of style is dictated mostly by their own culture.
- truck87bp, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Japan makes it a point not to purchase American made products since we bombed them. There are always a few risk takers in Japan.
- triplehelix, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2woops. the 3.59 million the ps3 sold was in the US.
- taintedzodiac, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Good to hear. Make sure you make that same comment when we're talking about Chinese sales figures.
- FloHimself, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Crappy diagrams with hardly no information on the abscissa!
- iruel, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1I think the 360 has a fairly decent lineup of non shooters. i just picked up eternal sonata a week ago, and i'm really enjoying it.
- taintedzodiac, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Where'd you read that? A history book from 1960?
- theblackgecko, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Considering my Japanesque love of RPGs, I'm happy as a clam to the PS3 taking to the Xbox 360 in Japan. How wonderful that all can enjoy the best of all worlds.
- Hockey13, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1Interesting. As an econ nerd myself, thanks for the econ explanation :-)
- Dracusis, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1LOL, I think he believes all life was seeded from America.
- bulgingbritches, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Why feel bad? Do you have financial stakes in the 360? Otherwise, just enjoy your 360 like the 12 million others who have one and obviously like it according to software sales.
On one hand I can understand its dismal sales in Japan. When I "put the shoe on the other foot", I don't get into most of the things the Japanese like. - lalilulelo, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1People argue along the lines that the Japanese market is just plain stupid, but honestly it's not that hard to figure out. A console that runs primarily off shooters such as 360 won't sell well when the best Japanese style RPG games are coming out for Nintendo and Sony. A Japanese player won't spend the equivalent of $300 on a 360 when Square Enix is actively remaking every Final Fantasy before VI for DS, and all announced RPG games are heading for PS3 and Wii.
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1"( with the Gamecube, which I thought was a great console, but apparently a lot of other people didn't )"
I agree.
I also feel the Wii and DS are the worst ones out. But apparently a lot don't agree. - kingmanic, on 01/16/2008, -1/+2Because they don't have a clue how to market to the audience.
- Kenzan, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1Wow..This is interesting like reading about how Pork Rinds are made is interesting.
- theblackgecko, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1To get the graphics card alone needed for good PC gaming costs as much as a PS3 / 360.
My laptop is for typing, my console is for gaming. - bnolsen, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2The japanese are also too smart to buy a console which has trash engineering with an over 33% failure rate. My question would be "how the hell does Microsoft do it for the American market"?
- triplehelix, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1there are plenty of japanese titles that do extremely well here in the states.
- Mooney79, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Heh, all of my chinese friends love shooters. In fact, they pwn me at it. But, then again, they like all those japanese and anime games too.
- Username314, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1rofl pwned
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1"Japan has very few casual gamers,"
Lies. Wii sells like hotcakes to casual gamers. -
