- jeremymccurdy, on 06/07/2009, -4/+28I don't see Bittorrent on that list, it's great for getting console games.
- BuddingMonkey, on 06/07/2009, -0/+18I had the SEGA channel. It warped my childhood.
- tgc1, on 06/07/2009, -0/+18Honestly, I personally hate this type of thing. Not because I don't like having the supposed freedom to choose a myriad of games at the leisure of an armchair. But because when I play video games, I like to interact with the product too. This is the reason i've taken up buying old consoles and recollecting games I had when I was a kid.
I love that I can buy a cartridge game, for instance, admire the box art, flip through an instruction booklet. Unfold a poster that came with the game. Have a shelf of games to look at and play. You don't get that experience, what I call "tangibility" with this sort of thing. The games become worthless because they are not tangible. They have no material worth. I feel disconnected from the experience. They reside purely in bits and bytes in another world that is not my own. That can be overwritten and lost in an instant.
For all the emulators in the world. There is nothing like playing Mario on an NES and being shot right back to my childhood and feeling like i'm 8 years old again. Nothing. - NeoTechni, on 06/06/2009, -0/+16I'm impressed they remembered the Sega Channel and SNES BS.
But they left out Sony's Japanese-only attempt on the PS2 - y0urcl0ne, on 06/07/2009, -2/+16Or you could use a PC and never buy games on a disc again.
- jftitan, on 06/07/2009, -0/+11My Friend had the SEGA channel. It warped our childhood as well.
- JDOG, on 06/07/2009, -0/+9You couldn't download games of that though right? It was only multiplayer and the browser.
- ryansimbalist, on 06/07/2009, -0/+9***** You! 2 of my friends were warped by Sega Channel!
- bakaoni, on 06/05/2009, -5/+13When it begins to come to my renting games instead of owning them, my interest wanes considerably. The only way that would work for me is if I could directly rent any game for a system as much as I wanted for a flat fee of like $14.99/mo and download it directly, ie like Gamefly.
- Jimmerz, on 06/07/2009, -0/+8Dunno about only three people buying it, but if you didn't have one you missed out on a great console.
Still have the one I bought on launch day at midnight. - tonychenyj, on 06/06/2009, -0/+8I still have the Nintendo's RandNet with me.
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -0/+7@tgc1
yeah the thing that worries me most is having downloaded hundreds of dollars of games and then having a hard drive failure, they need to work out some sort of recovery system - Brasolis, on 06/07/2009, -0/+7Seeing as Microsoft owns Windows and Xbox yes, most likely you will eventually get it on the PC...
- Jimmerz, on 06/07/2009, -0/+6Ah. You make a good point.
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -0/+6In my opinion the whole Sega Channel thing outlines a lot of the problems with parenting in the 90's.
"With Sega Channel, my kids stay at home"
I remember my mom encouraging me to play the vidyas as a kid because it meant i stayed home and I was "safe" but ending up causing more problems for me (and most kids i think) than going out into the world. - skunkman62, on 06/07/2009, -0/+6thank you for the Gamefly commercial.
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -1/+6From the article
"Unlike the system's backwards compatibility with most older Xbox titles, Xbox Originals provided full digital copies that would be downloaded directly to the 360's hard drive."
Fully digital? Holy *****, that blows away those older analog copies I have. Now maybe I can finally ditch the reel to reel player I've got hooked into the xBox. - Cheesepuffly, on 06/07/2009, -1/+6Can i play PC exclusives on my 360?
- Jimmerz, on 06/07/2009, -1/+6They mention the Sega Channel but not the online service for Dreamcast? Bit of an oversight.
- MidnightFox, on 06/07/2009, -0/+5speaking of Sega Channel, I wish they would relaunch Heat.net :( i miss that gaming service.
- ryansimbalist, on 06/07/2009, -0/+5Downloadable console games have always existed, just get a modchip.
- hartley, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4I love 90's advertising. (Sega Channel)
- mrjit, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4I had Sega Channel when I was a wee lad, and let me tell you, that thing was the most unreliable pile of junk I ever experienced. It was also annoying as hell, as games would rotate on a weekly/biweekly basis, meaning you'd log in and go "I had so much fun playing Exosquad this week.. wait, wait, it's gone!" -- Oh, Sega Channel, such fond memories of my mom sitting on your tech support line.
- ghrnvf, on 06/07/2009, -1/+5Where was the Phantom? Anyone remember that huge pile of vapor-wear?
- falconear, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4The SEGA channel...god, I haven't thought about that in years, but I remember my Dad suddenly announced to me that he got it as part of a promo for our cable. Between that and Maximum Carnage...I suppose the sun came out that summer, but I couldn't tell you for sure. :)
- tgc1, on 06/08/2009, -0/+4Don't forget that when you buy into this type of thing you CANNOT RESELL YOUR GAMES. Therefore you DO NOT own them. You are renting them.
- Zylog, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4Interesting that they did not mention Steam.
- nyxerebos, on 06/08/2009, -0/+4the thing that bothers me most is licensing, rather than owning a copy of your games. i feel entitled to lend, sell or give away something i purchase.
- TheObviousChild, on 06/07/2009, -0/+3I had InTellivision's PlayCable when I was 5 and it was pretty awesome. I was actually pissed when I had to start begging my parents to take me to Toys'R'Us to buy crtridges.
- sadisticmind, on 06/07/2009, -1/+4Foolish man. its not all about graphics. and its cheaper if you have kids playing one console rather then 6 PCs running. a 3 year old can start a sega game. i really doubt a 3 year old could figure out how to crack a game and apply patches on his own.
- llopez1223, on 06/07/2009, -0/+3"I'm not talkin bout 1, 2, 3...4 little games. NO, I'm talking about over 50 games a month!"
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -0/+3Because it's not console specific?
- cherwilco, on 06/07/2009, -1/+4buried all your submissions as spam, buried and reported all of your "comments". keep it up and others will follow.....
welcome to digg! now GTFO - kolop1, on 06/07/2009, -1/+4I can play 360 exclusives on the PC?
- MiDri, on 06/07/2009, -0/+2The problem i find is, I own 2 Xbox 360s (As well as a ps3) and it makes no sense for me to purchase a game online and tie it to my 360 account (My wife has her own) what if she wants to play the game and I'm using my account on another system?
I had Sega Channel back when i was a kid, I think that is a the best way to do it -- renting, I know it's a bit harder with games being around 4-8gb in size as apposed to 32mb... I really wish I could rent titles over 360, blockbuster is a ***** joke. - NeoTechni, on 06/07/2009, -0/+2VMS games?
- AlienHairball, on 06/07/2009, -0/+2Had to digg you up as I was the same way. I started with the Sega Master System and eventually moved the the Genesis. Had a good friend who was all Nintendo so between the two of us we got to play the best of both worlds :)
- ryansimbalist, on 06/07/2009, -0/+2VMU games?
- LoopyChew, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1Well, for the 360, downloads are tied to both the system and the account, so you could theoretically download to the wife's machine first, then re-download it to yours. As long as she's using her Live account on her system and you're connected to Live on yours, both of you should be able to play.
- SaltilloPunk, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1I don't remember the Intellivision cable service, but I clearly remember ads in video game magazines for the Game Line on the Atari. I never saw it in any store and always wondered if there was anyone who actually owned one. I also can not remember the sega channel. Can anyone tell me if this was limited to certain markets? Or was I oblivious because I was more focused on all the great distractions of college?
- austroLogi, on 06/07/2009, -2/+3Man I remember getting the genesis for christmas when I was a kid and man was sega channel awesome.... Still have my genesis in the living room, considering firing up S&K with the sonic 3 cartridge on top.
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1"my friends and I use to talk about boys...now we talk about the sega game channel"
yeah I can see how her father would want to keep her from getting knocked up but getting her this... - momedefome, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1I do remember the Sega Channel , it sucked
- Zylog, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1Crap
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1the only way i would pay for a flat rate download game service is if hell froze over
- djpray2k, on 06/09/2009, -0/+1Love how the whole download thing is moving forward but a few things.
First the broadband companies will have to adapt to this. If full on PS3 Blue Ray games are coming over on-line that is a massive bandwidth cost with the current system.
Secondly speed will have to improve - it takes ages to download a movie over Xbox Live in HD (6gb ish) and the same will go for large full retail titles. I live in a city centre and while only able to during daylight hours I can easily go to the shop and home in under an hour. Where is the advantage?
Also current hard disks on the 360 won't be able to cope and are way too expensive. Drop the cost of the hard disk MS and even use it as a loss leader to get people buying more games and movies on-line
Lastly download just feels of less value. I don't mind buying a few pop-cap games or old Sega titles for a few pound and not getting the disc, the box etc but when I'm paying £40 for a newish title I want to feel I'm getting value. It is similar with music of iTunes - it's fine spending £6 for an album but when you get to the cost of full retail games the customer wants more.. - djpray2k, on 06/09/2009, -0/+1tgc1 - that's the thing...if I'm buying an 800pt pop-cap game, that doesn't bother me. But if I'm blowing £40 on Resident Evil 5 I want to know when I'm done with it I can use it to trade in for something else.
- NismoDrift, on 06/09/2009, -0/+1but knowing the drm protection they'll come with they'll have unique keys probably but who knows right now its just 10-20 dollar arcade games but when it goes to 50-60 dollar legit games thats when u know microsoft will go hard on drm.
- nstern2, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1When the sega channel worked it was awesome. The other thing that bothered me was that the games switched on a monthly basis and you couldn't save.
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -1/+2there are 360 exclusive games that I give a ***** about?
