- jstohler, on 10/10/2007, -1/+88I'd have to give Counterstrike its own entry, even though it was a Half-Life add-on. There are plenty of people (like me) who played CS like maniacs without ever really getting into HL.
- Natetendo83, on 10/10/2007, -2/+86ok, why is the original Metroid there as a "notable game" in the FPS genre?
- theforrester, on 10/10/2007, -0/+75Dang, I remember when Wolfenstein 3D was actually scary...especially on my brand new totally awesome Sound Blaster Pro stereo 8-bit soundcard.
- Kenelm, on 10/10/2007, -8/+69Buried. Just another lame Top 5/10/15/20/50/100 list with the same old stuff everyone as seen a thousand times.

- steger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+39is that a UT 2004 screenshot for Unreal Tournament('99)?
- danielvmn, on 10/10/2007, -10/+42Goldeneye was the first to use missions instead of just going from one point to another in a level (quake, duke nukem), that was a great addition to the gameplay since then, That was a great achievement for console gaming
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -10/+42Did you know that, at the start of it's development, Goldeneye was supposed to be an on-rails shooter like virtual cop. Top international scientists estimate that this would have put back the progression of video games, in general, by twenty-seven years.
- jsballardx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+29He was thinking Doom 2.
- 60effects, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27Mein Leben!
Oh, and the sound of finding a secret wall was sooo satisfying. - viserov, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25Did anyone ever play Descent multiplayer? That was ***** awesome back in the day.
- emanggid, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24IDDQD.....IDKFA... ah those were the days
- kamikazecow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21When they were saying WW2 online was "The first true hugely successful multiplayer FPS" I was thinking to myself, uhh, counter-strike?
- dasdef, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20i think quake 2 should be on that list. The multiplayer was WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO crazy, not to mention the modding scene. Makes me want to install it and play. Gotta love the Railgun!
- BleedRed, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Duck Hunt: 1984
- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Rise of the Triad and Tribes are two of my absolute favorites.
I spent way too many hours playing Tribes freshman year of college.
And RoTT, Doom(2), Duke 3D, etc... I'd take dial-up 1v1 gaming over most of this online crap any day. - viserov, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Battlefield 2, despite its annoying glitches, is still a great game.
That being said, they should have listed Battlefield 1942 instead of Battlefield 2. - ToadLeg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14You do know Counter Strike is from the late 90s right?
- doktorrocket, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14True...but at least it's all on one page this time. :)
- Philodox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14I don't think they actually played WW2 online if it made that list.
- TheRealM3D, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16For the people hating on Halo... while it may not have been the best shooter in the history of the universe, it was still pretty freakin' influential. Here's how:
1. It sold millions of copies and probably millions of Xboxes as well, spawning the sequel Halo 2, which sold more titles than any other Xbox title and sold even more consoles. That probably MS in second place in the last genereation of console wars, stealing developers away from Sony and Nintendo.
2. The sequel, Halo 2, made Xbox Live a runaway hit. Literally BILLIONS of games have been played of Halo 2 online, growing the service by leaps and bounds. This probably helped to drive the improvements to the service on the Xbox 360.
3. It standardized how controls work for console FPS titles. That might seem small to PC gamers, but considering the dozens of titles that came after Halo and copied their control scheme, I am fairly certain we could call this influential. Everytime you play an FPS on the console, any FPS, you can be sure it was influenced in some way by the launch of Halo
That makes Halo incredibly significant, especially if you are one of the millions of gamers that don't make your PC your primary gaming device. - neoform, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13cause apparently people don't know the difference between first and third persons..
- Import98, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Splinter Cell isn't a FPS.
- sabach, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Were you thinking Doom 2? Huh?
- TheGort, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Maybe it's just me but I don't really think that Battlefield 2 should be on that list. Especially for the reason listed of that it truly makes you work as a team. Counter-strike does deserve to be on the list more than Battlefield 2 but I suppose they count counter-strike with half-life maybe?
- noisey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Comments like his are why I configure digg to always show all comments.
- Katana314, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Agreed. BF1942 was the innovation. BF2 was the features and pointless graphics.
- Typhoon2009, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11They listed BF2 twice? Oo
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11"I'd take dial-up 1v1 gaming over most of this online crap any day."
Doom2 cable connection, side by side co-op. Freakin AWESOME. Hooked me, and hooked me bad... - Rodalli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Why is this guy being dugg down? That game was ***** terrible. It has no business on anyone's top anything list.
- Joeshie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Oh wow, I can't read. It's chronological. My bad.
- atticus8, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Ah, flashbacks to a prophetic 12-year old Atticus: "Mark my word: one day, and that day might be eons in the future, on a 1000-86 perhaps, these walls will meet at angles OTHER than 90 degrees. You just watch."
- kidcodea, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9maybe they meant redfaction and its destructible environment.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Some diggers make no sense in the way they will digg people down who share factual information which only adds to the discussion.
- estvir, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11But it has Descent.. but also World War II Online (What the hell?).
- YojimboJango, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Descent dominated my high school computer lab. We even got a lot of the cooler teachers playing it. The labs had just been equiped with blazing fast 75 mhz pentiums and the game ran like hot butter.
- moskaudancer, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12Why is mcguffin getting dugg down?! He's sharing true, interesting, information, and is putting it into context with some light-hearted humour.
And to those who would call BS: Yes, he's completely right about the rail shooting. Wiki it. - haentz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I still remembered how amazed I was when I played the first few seconds of Wolfenstein 3D. Like.. REAL 3D Graphics that looked REALLY like the REAL world!
- Jebrooks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Graphics != gameplay.
- Meep3D, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Desert Combat (the BF1942 mod) should be there before BF2 - BF2 doesn't really do much that it didn't years before.
- NinjaBass, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Probably for attempting the first FPS on the Wii. Didn't do much though, the game did indeed suck balls.
- TheRealM3D, on 10/10/2007, -0/+714. WWII Online? Did they get PAID to include this on the list? Maybe people play that online, but WWII shooters had been done long before this was released. Online multiplayer had been done also. What did this add to warrant a place on the list? They should have dropped this and given CS its own entry or something.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Indeed. MP3 is how a FPS on the Wii should be handled -- Red Steel is not.
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Red steel was garbage in every sense of the word.
- jgreene777, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8site is down... but it better have Marathon...
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That game was amazing. I've never seen a game combine elements of FPS and RTS like that.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Dugg down for uber lameness...
- Drakk0n, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Where is Shadow Warrior?
Duke had some good catch phrases but who can beat "Whoooowantah some wang"? - funkytaco, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Unreal Tournament is excellent. Try Low Gravity InstaGib Capture the Flag at 135 speed.
Here's a map I made for that gametype:
